ceeded his available vegetables, and he began buying local fruits and vegetables from other growers to increase supply. At 19, David launched Parrfection Produce. He bought an abandoned building in Albany and set up a retail location selling locally grown fruits, vegetables, and flowers. The orders for local produce continued to increase and he started selling to hospitals, schools, universities, and grocery stores in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Iowa. Parrfection Produce continued to expand offerings with honey and maple syrup, and both conventional and organic products.

Green County Board summary By Erica Roth BOARD REPRESENTATIVE

The Green County Board met for the July meeting on Tuesday, July 9 at 7 p.m. It was a relatively brief meeting with only a few items of business. Supervisor Evenson, District 1, submitted his resignation effective Friday, July 12 due to moving out of the district. Supervisor Evenson held the position of ViceChair of the County Board, so a new Vice-Chair and Second Vice-Chair needed to be elected at Tuesday’s meeting. Supervisor Jerry Guth was elected by the board to Vice-Chair and Supervisor Harvey Mandel was elected to Second Vice-Chair. Dennis Evenson served on the Green County Board for fifteen years; he was an excellent representative and will be missed! Linda Boll was appointed by Chairman Carter to fill the District 1 Supervisor vacancy. Sheriff Skatrud presented an update to the board about the county-wide Radio Project, which involves the upgrade of emergency services radios. The Green County radio system is currently analog but is out of date and needs to upgrade to digital. Due to the other agencies and counties that we need to communicate with, as well as reaching the entirety of Green County, digital is the best option we have. Sheriff Skatrud and the Radio ad-hoc committee requested bids for upgrading the system and Sheriff Skatrud presented these bids to the board. It still needs to pass through the Radio committee before it comes to the board for a vote in August, but Sheriff Skatrud wanted to present the options to the board and answer questions about

the project and the options presented. This upgrade would affect all of the emergency services in the towns, villages, and cities in Green County including highway, police, fire, and EMS. The next Green County Board meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 13 at 7 p.m. in the historic court-

a passion for quality local produce and family farms. He shares his story at a website: www.parrfectionproduce.com/ contact-us. His grandparents encouraged his interest in agriculture from an early age. They gave him a miniature hoe and rake set and $25 for seeds when he was five. His enthusiasm and success at growing vegetables resulted in so many peas and radishes young Parr’s produce would go to waste. By the time he was 16, he was marketing and selling those extra vegetables at Monroe’s farmers’ market downtown. What didn’t sell at market, the teen took to local restaurants. Demand ex-

When weather’s fair, it’s always outdoor market time in Albany. And this year, the hotter it is the better for yard and house plants that like it hot. “Parrfection Produce Farm Market” at Main Street’s corner with County Highway E and State Road 59 is featuring a wide assortment of succulents, unique “flower bed” boxes and other produce. David Parr makes the wide range of plants, produce and garden adornment available for purchase, self-serve, seven days a week. Succulents stand out this hot July, as they store water in their thick leaves and stems. There’s a table laden with a beautiful assortment of them at Parrfection’s produce stand at its busy crossroads above the Sugar River in Albany’s downtown. Succulents come in way more than 20 varieties, with unique shapes, lovely flowers and special properties. Cactus, aloe, jade, Echeveria, with entertaining names like Hedgehog, Bunny Ears and Burro’s-tail – succulents, as miraculous symbols of enduring love of life, make great gifts to your friends or yourself. “Succulents offer us a positive example by conserving water and flourishing in very difficult circumstances, reminding us that we are stronger than we realize and even the most arduous situations is not the end of the line,” states Paloma Teppa, an Argentine Biophilic Designer based in Miami. Much closer to home, Parr started “Parrfection Produce” in 2009 out of
