Virtual program helps family caregivers Providing care for a friend or family member can be a rewarding experience, but it often provides challenges, according to a Green County Aging and Disability Resource Center press release.

More than 65 million family caregivers in America, the release stated, provide a vast array of emotional, financial, nursing, homemaking and other services on a daily or on an intermittent basis and often find themselves struggling to meet the needs of both their loved one and themselves.

Caregiving has always been a rewarding yet difficult job before COVID-19.

Now with the constant changes and new norms, in-person meetings have kept some people away due to fear, sickness, etc.

In hopes to still get the support, education, and resources out to everyone, many people

have relied heavily on technology and virtual communication, and still do.

Green County ADRC is offering a caregiver focused workshop virtually, to make it easier and more accessible for you.

Powerful Tools for Caregivers is an educational workshop series designed to provide tools caregivers need to better care for themselves, which reflects the increase in quality of care to the care recipient.

Through taking Powerful Tools for Caregivers, participants will learn how to reduce stress, improve self-confidence, better communicate feelings, find life balance, increase their ability to make tough decisions, locate helpful resources, and much more, all in the comfort of your own home.

Starting in late July, the Aging and Disability Resource

Center (ADRC) of Southwest Wisconsin Green County Office and UW Extension Iowa County Office are partnering to hold a Virtual Powerful Tools for Caregivers workshop, via zoom, to serve the region of Southwest Wisconsin and any other surrounding areas.

Classes consist of six, 1 ½ hour sessions held once a week. Two experienced and trained leaders conduct each class. Interactive lessons, discussions, and brainstorming help participants take the “tools” they choose to focus on that are applicable to their situation, and put them into action for their lives.

Also, participants will receive a free copy of, The Caregiver Helpbook – a helpful resource guide used in Powerful Tools for Caregivers.

To participate, you must have access to a smartphone, tablet, laptop, or computer

with internet access. If this is an issue, let ADRC staff know and they will work with you as best as they can to find a way for you to participate.

“Everyone has different levels and understandings of technology and we understand the frustration associated with this. We are here to work with you on being able to take and participate in this class,” said Laura Steiner, Wellness and Prevention Specialist, ADRC of Southwest Wisconsin in a release on the program.

ADRC will be offering a Zoom Practice Session on Wednesday, July 20 from 5:30 p.m.to 6:30 p.m.

“If this practice time and date do not work for you, we will work with you individually if extra help is needed in running the Zoom program and preparing you to feel comfortable enough to participate in the workshop,” Steiner stated.

Sessions are scheduled every Wednesday for six weeks, beginning July 27 and running

through Aug. 31. Classes will be held virtually from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Green County 4-H member, volunteer recognition is July 24 Recognition of effort and achievement is an essential part of the 4-H program, and plans are being made to recognize a special group this summer.

The 7th annual 4-H Graduation and Recognition Ceremony will be held on Sun-

day, July 24 at 11 a.m. in the Hospitality Tent at the Green County Fairgrounds.

On the final day of the Green County Fair, our 4-H graduates, 4-H Key Award recipients, Cindi Miller Memorial Scholarship recipients, and Friend of 4-H, Volunteer

of the Year, and Lifetime Volunteer recipients will be recognized.

Please come out to support our local 4-H youth and volunteers and help us commend them for their hard work and dedication to the Green County 4-H program.

Green County 4-H Club members with their livestock, crop, and other life-forming projects will converge on the fairgrounds in Monroe next week for the Green County Fair. It’s where memories are made – just like for these children from the 2018 fair. Can you guess their names and 4-H club?

These included family and professional caregivers, healthcare workers, social workers, nursing and pharmacy students, civic and business leaders, senior community residents, library patrons and more.

Net proceeds from his book, which was recognized by Caring.com as one of its Best Caregiving Books of 2017, promote Alzheimer’s caregiver support efforts.

A revised second print edition, as well as an e-book and audiobook were scheduled for spring 2018 release.

Prior to writing My Two Elaines – and while he still cared for his wife at home – Schreiber helped the Alzheimer’s Association launch Operation: Stronger Together. The multi-year awareness program initiated in 2015 has helped the Southeastern Wisconsin Chapter connect record numbers of families to education and resources that are vital to successful caregiving. He also collaborated with Wisconsin’s state government and business groups to help create the

Former Wisconsin Gov. Marty Schreiber and a panel of male caregivers are featured in a program and brunch at the Kelch Aviation Museum, North 2463 Airport Road in Brodhead, Thursday, Aug. 4.

The Aging and Disability Resource Centers of Rock County and Southwest Wisconsin are hosting the program titled “Caregiving: It’s not just a girl thing.”

Registration starts at 10 a.m.

Brunch service will begin at 10:30 a.m.

Schreiber, author of My Two Elaines: Learning, Coping and Surviving as an Alzheimer’s Caregiver will provide opening remarks for the group followed by a panel of local male caregivers who will share their stories and lessons learned in caring for an individual with Alzheimer’s or other related dementia. Tim Harrington, Community Outreach Coordinator for the Alzheimer’s Association, Wisconsin Chapter, will moderate the panel.

Reports from the National Family Caregiver Association and AARP indicate that upwards of 45% of family caregivers are male.

In addition, the Alzheimer’s Association estimates that twothirds of all those diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease are

Annual reports show importance to students of Weekend Food Each District provides an in-kind contribution to the program through the confidential distribution of foods to students. Only the District knows the identity of the student and the only expense to this program is the cost of food through Second Harvest.

Are these foods needed?

Two reports indicate the likelihood of food insecurity within students in these Districts.

Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction’s School Report Cards 2020 – 2021 indicate the percentage of students who are ‘Economically Disadvantaged” in each of the Districts: Albany 39.2%; Black Hawk 51.6%; Brodhead 48.4%; Juda 67.5%; Monticello 44.5%; New Glarus 21.4%; and Pecatonica 36.5%.

United Way’s ALICE report for the Wisconsin Counties of Green and Lafayette also shows a sizeable percentage of households whose income is not keeping pace with the cost of living.

ALICE is an acronym for Asset Limited, Income Constrained,

Employed — households that earn more than the Federal Poverty Level, but less than the basic cost of living for the county (the ALICE Threshold).

This is the percentage of households in poverty/ALICE Village of Albany 36%; Village of Blanchardville (Pecatonica) 31%; City of Brodhead 43%; Village of Gratiot (Black Hawk) 37%; Jefferson Township (Juda) 31%; Village of Monticello 34%; Village of New Glarus 23%; and Village of South Wayne (Black Hawk) 48%.

Honoring service, insight

Wisconsin Assemblyman Mark Spreitzer presents a State of Wisconsin Citation of Commendation by the Legislature recently to Jeannie and Karl Blumer on their retirement. Karl retired from Green County Board of Supervisors, and Jeannie retired from the Southwestern Wisconsin Community Action Board of Directors. The 2021 Weekend Food Programs Annual Reportreleased last week demonstrates importance of the effort in area school districts.

Through a partnership between Southwestern Wisconsin Community Action Program (SWCAP), Second Harvest Food Bank, and the School Districts of Albany, Black Hawk, Brodhead, Juda, Monticello, New Glarus, and Pecatonica, weekend foods are provided to participating students in these districts at no cost to the district or students.

During 2021, 5,971 weekend food packs were issued to students in these seven Districts. Here’s how the partnership works, according to area contact Jeannie Blumer of Albany.

SWCAP donates administrative functions, maintaining separate accounts for each District; volunteers fundraise, transport foods to the schools, and write grants to support the purchase of the foods through Second Harvest Food Bank. Second Harvest’s purchasing power provides low-cost nutritious foods to participating students.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Jeannie Blumer served SWCAP many years as board chair, and she worked for 33 years in Green County Human Services’ Economic Support Unit, 13 of those years as supervisor. After working with Green Cares Food Pantry and Monticello School District in 2018 to launch a pilot Pony Pack Program for children, she polled other districts and identified the same food insecurity for many children outside of school meal programs. For the weekend backpack food program now, she has raised funds, written grant applications, delivered food, worked with other volunteers – whatever needed to be done – to ensure food is available to children who are hungry in the seven school districts.

Lyon, Martin Schreiber, Kristine Haas and Matt Schreiber; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Elaine Thaney Schreiber, who had been a Milwaukee public school teacher, died of Alzheimer’s late this past April.

National Sheep Industry Improvement Center’s Board of Directors (NSIIC) is accepting grant proposals for the Sheep Production and Marketing Grant Program (SPMGP).

Congress established the grant program to foster improvements in the U.S. sheep industry. The USDA program will be accepting proposals through Sept. 15.

In 2019, the Agricultural Marketing Service of the USDA awarded a 5-year grant for $1.9 million to NSIIC. Announcement of the award is a part of NSIIC’s yearly competitive sub-award process.

Beckman Mill to host ice cream social and artists in the Rock County park

Summer is finally here, the season of ice cream, cake, and root beer floats!

Everyone is invited to join the Friends of Beckman Mill for their Annual Ice Cream Social and Artists in the Park on Sunday, July 17.

Enjoy food, art, and fun for the whole family from noon until 4 p.m.

Entrance to the park is free, and there is much to see and do.

Beckman Mill County Park is open year round to the public. The mill is open on for tours Saturdays and Sundays, 1 to 4 p.m., May to October.

For the ice cream social and art fair, which resumes this year after a 2-year COVID-19 interruption, artists from around the region will display their works in an open air gallery. You are invited to watch and ask the questions about their work. Some artists will have paintings for sale.

Budding artists are invited to paint. We provide the canvas and paints, you bring your artistic spirit. Sarah and Melissa will provide the inspiration and fun.

The previous 3 years’ paintings will be for sale.

Melody Jones, retired art teacher, will be offering sketching tips to kids.

Have you ever made ice cream?

At 2:30 p.m. Crystal will begin the process and visitors will be invited to help crank the handle and then of course have a taste of freshly made ice cream when it is ready.

New this year will be a story book walk created by Rock County Parks’ Amy Friend.

The story was chosen to fit in with the theme of ice cream!

Besides the art exhibits and painting, free activities will include grinding demonstrations at the mill, stroll the Oak Savanna Boardwalk, and visiting the museum.

Fish in the Mill Pond, explore the fish ladder, watch a video in the Cooperage, or simply lounge in the shelter and enjoy the ice cream treats.

Beckman Mill is located at Beckman Mill County Park, 6 miles west of Beloit and southeast of Brodhead off State Highway 81.

On the grounds of the 50acre county park you will see an authentically restored 1868 grist mill, a new dam, mill pond,fish ladder, foot bridge, saw mill display, 1840s cooperage, visitor center, gift shop, creamery, blacksmith shop, picnic shelter, vintage garden, nature trail and more.

The showpiece of the park is the Beckman Mill, the restoration of which was completed in 1997 by the Friends of Beckman Mill’s volunteer work crew.

The mill was built shortly after the Civil War by millwright William Howe of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin.

In 1882 it was acquired by August Beckmann who had

previously operated mills in nearby Juda and Hanover. The mill was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.

There is no charge for any of the activities or the treats, but donations are appreciated. Summer doesn’t get any better than this. It’s the perfect way to celebrate National Ice Cream Day.

Alderman Casey Jones the sole name on the ballot in the April 5 election despite four open seats on City Council.

Mayor Troy Nyman and aldermen Timothy Schadewaldt, Robert Moon and Casey Jones filed notice of non-candidacy papers with the clerk’s office.

Jones is seeking the mayoral seat, leaving the three incumbent aldermanic seats up for grabs by write-in candidates, according to the city clerk.

“At this point in time we are open to registered writeins,” City Clerk Nikolai Wahl said Friday, after the filing deadline.

This isn’t the first time the city relied on multiple writein candidates to fill the Council, according to the clerk. In the 2021 spring election, only one candidate filed nomination papers for three open seats, leaving two spots to be filled by write-ins.

A graduation ceremony and celebration were held on Thursday, June 30, at Hawks Mill Winery in Browntown.

It honored the doctors who completed the programs at SSM Health Monroe Hospital.

He then collided with a wire box on the side of the roadway and was ejected from the motorcycle.

He reported that he was not wearing a helmet and sustained non-life threatening injuries.

He was ultimately cited for Failure to Maintain Control and Failure to Report a Crash to Law Enforcement. He was

issued the citations with a future court date.

Traffic Crime At approximately 1:35 p.m., deputies were assisting a driver with vehicle issues in the West 3000 block of State Highway 11 in the Town of Jefferson.

Investigation resulted in the operator, Ryan M. Link, 31 of Edgerton, being cited for Operating After Revocation due to Operating a Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated.

He was released pending a future court appearance.

• DWD continues expanded call center hours and staffing to assist individuals with questions regarding their unemployment claim or process.

UI also unveiled a cloud-based Customer Contact Center that features a virtual agent that can answer frequently asked questions after business hours in English, Spanish, and Hmong.

DWD’s Equal Rights Division (ERD) now accepts online applications for the department’s most common civil rights and labor standards complaints, such as on wage claims, fair employment, housing, public accommodations, and state FMLA. ERD also offers downloadable versions of these complaint forms in Spanish.

The launch of an interactive directory on the state’s JobCenterofWisconsin.com website allows Wisconsinites to connect with workforce services through contacts in their

local area.

New enhancements to the Workers’ Compensation litigated case portal allow documents to be securely uploaded into the portal.

Through the support of the United States Department of Labor’s Tiger Team grant, DWD has also begun implementing four new projects designed to promote equitable access, improve responsiveness, and ensure timely payment of benefits while also preventing and detecting fraud committed against the UI program.

DWD is also partnering with United Migrant Opportunity Services to support improved access for those shown to face barriers to UI benefit receipt with the support of USDOL’s UI Navigator Grant.

DWD’s ongoing UI modernization efforts are designed to fix back-end system issues that can delay payments and improve the user experience by making the process easier to navigate.

Claimants may access the Spanish version of the claims portal by selecting the “Español” link on the logon page.

Previously, the department only provided access to these services to people whose preferred language is not English through in-person or phone interpretation.

Filing online UI weekly claims in Spanish has been available since 2017.

Other recent customer service enhancements to DWD’s websites and materials include: • DWD’s online chat service for Job Service, Mattie Moo, has moved into a support role for individuals filing UI claims and seeking other assistance, allowing users to gain access to vital information more quickly and get their questions answered in real-time. Mattie Moo has been implemented on key UI ---Internet webpages and is available in Spanish and Hmong.

• DWD unveiled an upgraded UI claims portal that features better functionality and new features, including secure document upload, a message center for direct communication from claims specialists and adjudicators, text notifications, a mobile friendly design, and the option to request accommodations related to a disability for an appeal.

• DWD made it easier to file for UI benefits by updating the language for both its initial and
