Empty the shelters of pets this summer
Humane Society of Southern Wisconsin offers $50 adoption fees
The Humane Society of Southern Wisconsin will offer $50 adoption fees from July 10 to 31 thanks to the Bissell Pet Foundation’s #EmptyTheShelters national adoption event.
Adoption fees will be $50 for most dogs six months and older and adult cats. Bissell Pet Foundation will sponsor the difference and is partnering with MetLife Pet Insurance to offer 30 days of pet insurance to adopters. The special adoption price will only apply to pets at the main shelter location (4700 S. County Trunk G, Janesville) and foster homes. Additional fees such as city of Janesville licensing, cat carrier, leash and collar are not included, and adopters are still required to complete a standard adoption application.
Since the 2016 inception of Bissell Pet Foundation’s “Empty the Shelters,” nearly 158,000 pets at 669 animal welfare organizations in 49 states and Canada have received second chances. An average of 1,200 shelter pets are adopted each day during each quarterly national event. Through this partnership and continued support, the foundation is looking forward to reaching more pets in
more shelters and communities during this upcoming event.
“We are excited to team up with MetLife Pet Insurance to offer 30 days of pet insurance at no cost to the adopter, as well as the opportunity to purchase an annual pet insurance policy, which could make a difference in helping adopters deal with their pet’s unexpected illness or injury,” said Cathy Bissell, Founder of Bissell Pet Foundation. “Veterinary costs add up quickly, and too often, pet owners forgo care or surrender their beloved pets when they can’t afford treatment. This collaboration could help to enable more pets in more communities to be adopted through ‘Empty the Shelters’ and can help facilitate adopters seeking treatment to keep their pets healthy and in their new homes.”
Due to the frequent turnover of available pets at HSSW during the “Empty the Shelters” event, potential adopters are encouraged to regularly check the website, which is always up to date: www.PetsGoHome.org/adopt.

Cooperative have dedicated their co-produced Dairy Stream podcast to the issue. A four-part series, “Success in Succession Planning,” kicked off in May, with the penultimate episode released in early July. three siblings, Carol Peach, Jean Wendlandt and Dean Harnack. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the family in Dale’s memory and can be mailed to the DL Newcomer Funeral Home, PO Box 26, Brodhead, WI 53520.
Private family services will be held at a later date. Burial will be completed at the Greenwood Cemetery in Brodhead. The DL Newcomer Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
The series includes appearances from a variety of HR professionals and dairy farmers, including Laura Finger of Finger Family Farm in Peshtigo, Sandy Larson of Larson Acres in Evansville, and Christine Bender of McFarlandale Dairy in Watertown.
“Workplace culture is critical for any business, but increasingly so for farmers,” Tim Trotter, CEO of the two organizations, said. “Dairy Stream prides itself on providing resources for farmers, from farmers, to adapt to an increasingly complex business.”
Bender said building rapport with your workforce is the most important thing a dairy farmer can do.
“It’s important to be objective and non-judgmental,” she said. “Your goal is to help the employee.”
Trotter believes farmers already possess the tools necessary to overcome any workforce challenges.
“Dairy farmers are innovators,” Trotter said. “Dairy Stream has always strived to showcase their stories and share their solutions to complex problems.”

Sunken vehicle located in Rock River near Janesville
On July 3, a citizen reported to the Rock County Sheriff’s Office they believed they had located a sunken vehicle in the Rock River near Riverside Park in Janesville. The reporting person provided an exact location and images from a side-scan sonar. The Sheriff’s Office deployed a boat and confirmed the location and obtained additional side-scan images.
On July 5, the Rock County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team was deployed into the river and was able to locate the vehicle in around 12 feet of water. The divers were able to connect tow straps to it and were assisted by Davis Towing in removing it from the river bottom. The Janesville Fire Department and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources also assisted during the investigation.
On July 6, Rock County Sheriff’s Office detectives were able to confirm the vehicle that was removed was reported stolen to their agency in August of 1993. Detectives have since been in contact with the owner of it and the investigation is considered closed.

Summer’s best Ice Cream Social and Artists in the Park
Summer is finally here – the season of ice cream, cake, and root beer floats!
Everyone is invited to join the Friends of Beckman Mill for their Annual Ice Cream Social and Artists in the Park on Sunday, July 16, from noon until 4 p.m. right at Beckman Mill County Park, 11600 S. County Road H, in Beloit. Entrance to the park is free and there will be so much to see and do.
DNR offering free well water screening at Farm Technology Days
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced on July 6 they will provide free well water testing for nitrates at Farm Technology Days in Baraboo from July 18 to 20.
Nitrates are the most common health-related contaminant found in Wisconsin’s groundwater. The DNR will offer free on-the-spot screening, and results will be available in only a few minutes.
Those interested should bring one cup of well water in any clean container to booth 719 and look for the DNR’s Drinking Water and Groundwater Program table.
“About 10% of private wells statewide may contain high levels of nitrate, and almost one-third of private well owners have never had their water tested for nitrate,” said Stacy Steinke, DNR Private Water Field Supervisor.
Infants or pregnant women should not consume water with nitrate-nitrogen levels greater than 10 mg/L. DNR staff will be on hand to answer questions and may recommend additional testing if elevated nitrate levels are detected.
Staff will also be available to answer questions about the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) well grant programs. The ARPA well compensation
grant program provides funding to eligible landowners, renters or Wisconsin business owners to replace, reconstruct or treat contaminated private water supplies and to fill and seal unused wells. If eligible, well owners could receive up to $16,000.
Anyone interested can find more information about nitrates in drinking water and ARPA well grant programs on the DNR website.
Courageous Conversations topic for July is Affirmative Action
YWCA Rock County. The topic for July is “Affirmative Action.” What is its
history? What has it accomplished? What are people saying about it since the Supreme Court’s decision? How has it affected us all?
The conversation takes place via Zoom on Monday, July 24, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
To register for the discussion (newly each month), please go to the registration link at bit.ly/YWCACourageousConversations.
An unmoderated 30 minutes will begin at 7 p.m.
As a reminder to all, the agreements for Courageous Conversations are: stay engaged, experience discomfort, speak your truth, and expect and accept non-closure.
Please note that Community Action is an apolitical organization.
Again this year, artists from around the region will display their works in a beautiful open-air gallery. Everyone is invited to watch and interact with them. Some artists will also have paintings for sale.
Kids – are you ready to get creative? Budding artists are invited to paint, with canvas and paints provided, so bring the artistic spirit. Sarah and Melissa will provide the inspiration and fun. The previous three years paintings will be for sale, as well. Melody Jones, retired art teacher, will help the kids create their very own bookmark and will offer sketching tips to them.
Ever wanted to make ice cream? At 2:30 p.m., Crystal will begin the process and visitors will be invited to help crank the handle – and then of course have a taste
of freshly made ice cream when it is ready.
Besides the art exhibits and painting, free activities will include grinding demonstrations on the historic 1858 mill, stroll the Oak Savanna Boardwalk, visiting the museum, and much more. Fish in the Mill Pond, explore the fish ladder, watch a video in the Cooperage, or simply lounge in the shelter and enjoy the ice cream treats and listen to John Sheehan and Matt Wundrow playing their toe-tapping concertinas. There is no charge for any of the activities or the treats, but donations are greatly appreciated.
Summer doesn’t get any better than this! Enjoy the treats, music, art, and fun for the whole family. It’s the perfect way to celebrate National Ice Cream Day!

The 34th Annual Rock-Ford A’s 2023 Model A Day was held a few weeks ago on June 4 in downtown Clinton.
After being in Sharon for 25 years, the event switched venues to Clinton.

Any unlicensed dog may be seized of impounded if found at large within the village of Footville, and the fact that a dog is without a proper license tag attached to its collar shall be presumptive evidence that it is unlicensed.
The Chief of Police or any member of the Village Board who has acted in accordance with the above shall notify the owner personally or through the mail if such owner be known to the officer or can be ascertained with reasonable effort. If such owner be
unknown or cannot to ascertained, then the officer shall post written notice in three public places in the village of Footville, giving a description of the dog, stating where it is impounded and the conditions for its release within 48 hours, Sundays excepted, after such officer shall have taken said dog into his possession. If after seven days the owner does not claim such dog, such officer or any party designated by the Village President shall dispose of or arrange for the disposal of the dog in a proper and humane manner. Every officer who has received a dog shall keep a record of such dog describing the dog with reasonable certainty of identification and listing the name and address of the party to whom the dog was delivered or the manner in which the dog was otherwise disposed of. In addition, any person to whom the dog is delivered must sign a statement to that effect giving his name, address and the date of delivery or receipt of such dog.
The conditions of release for a licensed dog shall be the reimbursement to the Village Board for any expenditures the village has incurred by impounding the dog. The conditions for the release of an unlicensed dog are the purchase of a license plus the reimbursement to the Village Board for the expenditures incurred by the village in impounding said dog.

Wisconsin Air National Guard hosts veteran James Meredith at Juneteenth event on June 20
By Tom Beckman WISCONSIN NATIONAL GUARD
A standing-room-only crowd at Sijan Hall on the Wisconsin Air National Guard’s 128th Air Refueling Base heard from civil rights activist, author and Air Force veteran James Meredith at a June 20 event observing Juneteenth Day.
Because Juneteenth Day is a federal holiday, the Air National Guard base was not open June 19.
“I would not be here today if not for James Meredith,” said his cousin Carl Meredith, a colonel in the Wisconsin Army National Guard. Col Meredith was selected as a diversity and inclusion co-champion to teach, coach and mentor the Wisconsin Department of Military Affairs’ new State Joint Diversity Executive Council.
“When I think about what he endured, and what he battled, I am humbled to think I am standing on his shoulders and legacy,” Col. Meredith continued. “All of us are in debt to the resilience and perseverance of this incredible man in our nation’s history.”
The event – titled “Who is James Meredith?” – was hosted by the Wisconsin National Guard’s Equal Opportunity Office as well as the Department of Military Affairs’ Diversity and Inclusion Program.
“We wanted this special event to raise awareness of
the importance of diversity and inclusion in the National Guard by having an open conversation about the history of Emancipation Day, the struggle for desegregation and the continuing fight for civil rights in our country,” said Katie Bermudez, diversity and inclusion program manager.
Meredith did not just break racial barriers, he shattered them. After serving for nine years as one of the first black recruits for the Air Force in 1951, he applied for admission to the University of Mississippi in 1961. The process went well at first, until he had to submit a photograph of himself. Meredith wrote an impassioned letter to the U.S. Department of Justice in 1961, asking “that the federal agencies use the power and prestige of their positions to [ensure] the full rights of citizenship for our people.
“I do hope to see the day when the million Negroes that live in the state of Mississippi will have cause not to fear as they fear today,” he wrote.
President John F. Kennedy would send federal troops and the National Guard to ensure order when Meredith became the first African American admitted to the University of Mississippi in 1962.
“For me, the American dream has always been the ultimate accomplishment of the quality of mankind,” Meredith said during the event. “While
stationed with the Air Force in Japan, I learned that racism is a man-made construct – it’s not natural. The people of Japan treated me and others of color with respect and dignity. I figured, if we learn racism, we can also learn how to embrace people of color.
“This was a valuable lesson in my life.”
The Juneteenth Day observation also featured a short excerpt from a documentary about James Meredith, produced by his wife Dr. Judy Alsobrooks Meredith, and a panel discussion with Wisconsin National Guard leadership. Meredith shows no signs of slowing down on the verge of his 90th birthday. His newest mission is to help draw attention to battling crime in black communities around the country. He has visited and spent time with leaders in nearly 90 communities around the nation, seeking solutions to help improve the lives of disenfranchised and disengaged people in urban communities. Bermudez embraced that work ethic.
“The communities we serve embrace cultural diversity and inclusive behaviors,” she said. “As a result, we must learn, grow and develop the cultural intelligence of our members to be able to meet the needs of our stakeholders, constituents and communities where they are at. [Diversity and Inclusion] is not just what we do, it is who we are!”

World Championship in Wisconsin. From July 20 to 22, competitors from around the globe will compete in Hayward.
Competitors come from around the globe to Wisconsin lumberjack event
For over 60 years, Wisconsin has been home to the greatest and most prestigious lumberjack and lumberjill competition worldwide, the Lumberjack World Championships (LWC), a three-day celebration of lumberjack sports in Hayward at 15670 W. County Road B.
This year, from July 20 to 22, 107 competitors from around the globe and across the nation will compete for a purse of nearly $76,000 in a variety of lumberjack sports disciplines.
Lumberjack World Championships athletes compete in twenty-four events, including, log rolling, boom running, sawing, chopping, axe throwing, and speed climbing.
Each day’s competition will culminate with a crowd favorite, the team relay, combining speed climbing, boom running, single-buck sawing, underhand chopping, and standing block chopping. LWC quarterfinal competitions begin on Thursday, July 20, with semifinal competitions on Friday, July 21. The 63rd Lumberjack World Championships final competition will take place on Saturday, July 22, at 6 p.m. in the historic Lumberjack Bowl, Hayward.
Each year spectators and fans flock to Lumberjack Bowl to witness the fierce competition and to experience the celebration of lumberjack sports on the festival grounds. Gates open at 11:30 a.m. daily, tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door while available. Spectators can try their hand (or feet!) at log rolling, grab lunch or dinner from one of the food vendors, visit the unique displays and vendors, pick up a souvenir in the Lumberjack Shop, and enjoy music in the Swinging Axe Beer Garden.
LWC is three days of international, hearty competition wrapped up in good, old, north woods fun. Preliminary competitions begin daily at 11:30 a.m. with the main qualifying competitions beginning at 6 p.m. after the traditional opening ceremony at 5:45 p.m. each evening. About the LWC
The Lumberjack World Championships (LWC) began in 1960 to acknowledge the rich history of the logging industry across the United States. Workday skills that were perfected in the forests of the nation became a past-time and soon grew into an exciting and growing sporting event. Now in its 63rd year, the LWC is a three-day festival of lumberjack sports held in Hayward each summer.
