Following a 90-minute break in Albany, participants continued their journey toward Edgerton, where the route ended at Thresherman’s Park.

According to the event website, the concept for the MDA Tub Run was developed 22 years ago as the result of an already-established relationship between the Muscular Dystrophy Association and Harley Davidson.

Register at the lake at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. Races will begin at 2 p.m. Teams will consist of seniors over 55; adult males 17 and older; adult females 17 and older; co-ed; and children between ages 12 and 16. There is no fee to enter.

The Monticello Community Club is sponsoring the prizes.

Following is the “triathlon,” a fun-based relay race. The team divisions are the same as those for the canoe races.

Both events are as fun to watch as they are to participate in!

Community firefighter water fights will be held at on Saturday at 1 p.m. on West North Avenue by the pool.

From 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the main beer tent, the Greenfield Brothers will be entertaining, sponsored by Harvey W. Kubly, C.P.A. and Freitag Financial Services.

Zwingli Brotherhood will sponsor a Powerpoint discussion by Christopher Pederson of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, beginning at 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 9 at Zwingli U.C.C. The title of his presentation will be “Schuetzenvereins (Shooting Societies) of Green County”. Pederson is Vice President of the Eau Claire Schuetzenverein and is a military historian.

He is gathering material for a book on “Schuetzenvereins of Wisconsin.” Schuetzen shooting is done offhand at distances up to 200 yards using precision, single shot rifles.

The Swiss considered Schuetzen as “Shooting like a man... standing on two legs.”

At one time, Green County had three Schuetzenvereins; one each in Monroe, Monticello, and New Glarus. These clubs were a center for social gatherings and shooting competitions. Pederson has gathered many facts and photos of the facilities (shooting barns, ranges, target houses) as well as the people, the rifles they used, their targets, and their awards.

This talk should be of interest for anyone who wants to know more about Swiss Heritage, shooting sports, and local history.

Zwingli U.C.C. is located at 416 East Lake Avenue in Monticello and features air conditioning, padded pews, and two large viewing screens. For more information, contact Paul Rieder at (608) 558 – 8192.

At the beer stand from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., there will again be live music from Electric Blue. There will be no cover charge.

At 9:45 p.m., the band will break for fireworks. The fireworks are set off at Lake Montesian and can be viewed from several locations. A special “thank you” goes to the fireworks sponsors, the Monticello Community Club and Greenwoods State Bank.

In case of rain, the fireworks will be rescheduled for Sunday night at 9:45.

Sunday Church services will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Montesian Gardens, hosted by Washington Reformation U.C.C. of Monticello. Please bring your lawn chairs and take a little extra time to enjoy the beautiful gardens, tended to by community volunteers.

Following the church services, plan on lunch at the Chicken Barbecue, sponsored by the Monticello Community Club.

The group is serving half chicken dinners for $10 or just chicken for $7. Serving will begin at 11 a.m. at the Octagon Shelter. Carry-outs are available. Delivery service is available within village limits to senior citizens or handicapped or disabled persons who don’t have anyone to come pick up their chicken. Monticello Community Club would like to invite you to our annual celebration in Monticello, beginning with softball on Thursday, July 7 and continuing through Sunday, July 10.

We have many activities that you are welcomed to come and watch or even participate in. A carnival will be available for children and will begin on Friday with Wristband Special from 6 to 10 p.m. This is the only Wristband Special scheduled for the weekend.

All weekend You don’t need to eat before you come in to Homecoming! The Lionesses will have their food stand open beginning Friday at 4 p.m. There will be brats, hot dogs, BBQs, and luscious homemade pies donated by community members. Prepare to enjoy! Pie flavors change daily, so check often for your favorite before it is sold out.

The Lion’s Club will be serving their famous homemade cheese curds and mushrooms all weekend. Also, the Boy Scouts, the Booster Club, and other local organizations will be on the grounds to serve you with ice cold lemonade, and other treats.

As usual, you won’t go hungry at the ball diamond, either, as the Friends of the Library will be providing munchies.

Softball tournaments will begin on Thursday evening at 7 p.m. The games will continue all weekend. To register for softball or for more information, please call 426-4955.

Friday Why cook Friday night? Get your dinner at the Fish Boil at the Octagon Shelter near the lake. The FFA and FFA Alumni are serving. Dinner begins at 5 p.m. This is the traditional fish boil with boiled potatoes, onions, and fish, plus plenty of melted butter. Prices are $10 in advance for adult dinners and $11 at door or $5 for a child’s portion.

At 7 p.m., the Homecoming Variety Show will showcase our local talent in a free, fun variety show format at Barnaby’s Monticello House. Come inside and be entertained.

From 8 p.m. to midnight at the main beer stand, Rockabilly Junction will be performing. There will be no admission charge.

Saturday Mud volleyball, grass volleyball and 3-on-3 basketball will be happening all day Saturday. Contact the coordinator to sign up in advance.

At 9:30 a.m., motorcyclists can sign up for the Monticello Homecoming Ride Registration at the Rathskeller. The ride leaves at 11 a.m. sharp. This is a great ride with great prizes, all for a great cause: the Empty Stocking Fund.

The kids’ free Pedal Tractor Pull is back this year. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. at West Monroe Street in front of the Monticello Pool House. This event is for children ages three to 10 with four age classes. All participants will receive a free t-shirt, and trophies are available for stand-outs within each class. No pre-registration is necessary. Thank you to our many local sponsors.

New this year is Monticello PTO’s first annual Pony Trot 5K Run/Walk and Little Pony 1K. Come out and support the Monticello PTO for their first ever run/walk fundraiser.

This event will replace the annual beginning of the door-todoor fundraiser.

All races start and end at Monticello Schools. The kids’ run is at 8:30 a.m., and the 5K run/walk is at 9. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. on day of race.

The funds raised from this event will go directly back to the students and teachers of Monticello Schools. A few activities we have sponsored this year are: teacher grants, classroom treats, a portable speaker system, post prom, a PBIS dance, and senior scholarships.

The Monticello Community Club is a local organization that has been in existence for more than fifty years. The club’s purpose is to make our community a great place to live and raise a family. Our annual Homecoming celebration is the main fundraiser for projects that better Monticello.

Through the years, the club has contributed to the development and improvement of Lake Montesian, the village park, the ball diamond, the new basketball court, the octagon shelter house, the depot, the pool, the village playground equipment, and many other projects in our village, including scholarships.

The Monticello Chamber of Commerce (formerly Monticello Business and Professional Association) consists of area businesses and professionals working together to improve the local business climate and ensure a thriving, strong community.

The Monticello Lions and Lionesses are strong service organizations in Monticello.

Student disciplined after threatening school The Albany student responsible for posting the May 17 threat on Yik Yak, a social media application that allows users to post anonymously, has admitted to posting the threat.

The admission follows an investigation conducted by school and law enforcement authorities. Yik Yak cooperated with the investigation by removing the threatening post and by providing information

that was used to help identify the student.

School disciplinary consequences were imposed during a closed meeting held with the Albany School Board on Monday, June 20.

School officials are not able to identify the student or to release additional information because of state and federal laws concerning the confidentiality of student records.

Pedal for Paws to benefit Green County Humane Society Registration is now open for the fifteenth annual Pedal for Paws benefit ride for the Green County Humane Society. The ride is scheduled for Thursday, July 9 beginning at 7 a.m. in New Glarus.

All new routes will depart from the Village Park in downtown New Glarus. Routes of varying elevations are available, and route lengths are 25, 45, or 65 miles. Additionally,

a family-friendly, nine-mile route is available along the Sugar River Trail. A trail pass is required for the nine-mile route.

Please note that helmets are required for all participants.

Check-in will begin at 7 a.m. at Village Park. Following the ride, participants may enjoy food and music in the park, along with soft drinks and free beer courtesy of the New

Glarus Brewery.

Registration costs $45 for individuals and $65 for families of two adults and up to two children. Additional children between ages 15 and 17 cost $20. To register, visit p4p. zapevent.com.

Humane society shares tips for keeping pets safe during summer

As the temperatures rise, the days become longer, and the time animals spend outside increases, pet safety becomes a priority. The Green County Humane Society shared the following tips for keeping pets safe through the summer months: Cars Never leave a pet in the car, even with the windows cracked.

Shade Always protect pets from the sun’s rays, and be sure to keep them hydrated.

Asphalt If the asphalt is too hot for a human’s bare feet, it is too hot for bare paws.

Exercise Limit pet exercise, and keep pets

Green County Sheriff’s Report ber, 18, of Monticello, collided with a vehicle driven by Nancy B. Rose Parr, 55, of Monroe. Zuber stated he was not injured and was wearing a seat belt. There was no airbag deployment in his vehicle. Zuber’s vehicle sustained moderate damage and was towed from the scene. Warrant arrests At 4:03 p.m., deputies arrested

Betty R. Surrell, 49, of Albany, at a residence in the 100 block of South Water Street in the Village of Albany. Surrell was arrested on a warrant through the Brodhead Police Department for Failure to Pay Fine. Surrell was transported to the Green County Jail where bond was posted, and she was released.

At 5:30 p.m., deputies arrested Skyla S. Diaz, 20, of Albany, at a residence in the North 6500 block of English Settlement Road in the Village of Albany. Diaz was arrested on a Failure to Pay Fine Warrant that was issued by the Albany Police Department. Diaz was transported to the Green County Jail. Diaz posted bond and was released from custody.

Thursday, June 23 Motor vehicle crash At 7:15 p.m., deputies, along with Brooklyn Fire, responded to a singlevehicle fire on Union Road at State Highway 92 in the Town of Brooklyn. Parkview student selected to participate in national leadership program Parkview senior Colleen Toberman has been selected to participate in the Economic History for Leaders (EHFL) program being conducted at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, from Monday, June 27 through Sunday, July 3.

Toberman is one of only 35 domestic and international students honored by being accepted into the Foundation for Teaching Economics’ Economic History for Leaders program. Selection criteria for the program include excellent leadership potential and academic achievement.

During the week-long EHFL program, students attain an understanding of economic history and economic reasoning principles and learn how to employ these con-

cepts for successful and effective leadership. Additionally, participants achieve a heightened awareness of the impact that their decisions have on others, as well as the Colleen Toberman responsibility that awareness imposes.

EHFL is an unparalleled learning and growing opportunity. Students who have attended Economic History for Leaders and Economics for Leaders programs in prior years have called it “the experience of a lifetime.”

Criminal damage, theft At 6:18 p.m., deputies took three reports of Criminal Damage and Theft from vehicles that were parked at the Cadiz Springs State Park in the North 2200 block of Cadiz Springs Road in the Town of Cadiz. An investigation revealed that three windows were broken out in vehicles, and personal belongings were taken out of two of them. A suspect vehicle is a black SUV with State of Washington plates. Award-winning farmers to host field day on organic farm Organic Farmers of the Year Steve Pincus and Beth Kazmar will host a free field day on Monday, July 11 from 1 to 4 p.m. at their farm near Evansville. This event is part of the 2016 Organic Field Days season organized by the Midwest Organic & Sustainable Education Service (MOSES).

Pincus and Kazmar, winners of the 2016 MOSES Organic Farmers of the Year award, own Tipi Produce, a 76-acre certified organic farm.

They grow organic vegetables for food co-ops in Madison and Milwaukee and for 500 communitysupported agriculture (CSA) members.

Visitors at the field day will learn what’s involved in producing fresh market organic vegetables, plus tips for managing and retaining farm workers. The farmers will discuss organic methods for controlling vegetable pests and diseases and for building healthy, productive soil. In addition, there will be a presentation about Whole Farm Revenue Protection, the new USDA option to help farms with diverse operations manage risk.

Paul was born and raised in Milton. He went to college at the University of WisconsinPlatteville, where he majored in agribusiness. He has spent the last 10 years managing Schilberg Park in Milton.

Paul is married to Kristin (Barlass) Paul and has two children. The family lives on a farm just outside of Milton where they house replacement heifers. He is active in the community and has been the chairman of Milton’s 4th of

July celebration for 6 years, co-chair of Wally’s Music Fest, and part of the Milton FFA Alumni. He and his wife help coach local 4-H and FFA teams and have had over 50 youth take fair animal projects from our farm. Both of their families have a long history of being involved in 4-H and the Rock County Fair.

As the new manager, Paul will be responsible for: the repair and maintenance of the fairgrounds buildings and property; fairgrounds rentals and contracts; and setup of buildings for events, among any other duties involving the fairgrounds.

Green County Dairy Day Show results announced The 2016 Green County Dairy Days Cattle Show successfully took place on Saturday, June 18.

This year’s show was hosted by the Belleville Community and took place at the Green County Fairgrounds in Monroe, Wisconsin. There were a total of 45 youth and 67 head of cattle from 4-H clubs and FFA chapters in the competition. Thank you to the many sponsors and spectators who took the time to cheer on and support our exhibitors.

Results of the 2016 event are as follows: Winning the Registered Holstein Show was Brian McCullough (Juda FFA), receiving the Grand Champion Trophy for his Summer Yearling Heifer. Reserve Champion went to Cole Mahlkuch (Juda Jolly Juniors) with his Fall Yearling Heifer.

In the Registered Brown Swiss division, Natalie Roe (Washington Center) received Grand Champion with her Spring Yearling Heifer, while Braylon Hoesly (Washington Center) received Reserve Champion with his Summer Yearling Heifer, and Chesnie Wilhite (Clarence Bridge Pioneers) received Honorable Mention for her Summer Yearling Heifer.

For the Grade Holstein category, Sarah Blumer (Monticello FFA) took home the Grand Champion Trophy with her Spring Yearling Heifer, while Carly Arneson (Monroe FFA) received Reserve Champion with her Fall Heifer Calf.

Haley Arneson (Monroe FFA) was named Honorable Mention for her Fall Heifer Calf.

Ballmer elected to serve Wisconsin Association of FFA

Ciera Ballmer of the Clinton FFA Chapter is now a State FFA Officer.

Ciera Ballmer of the Clinton FFA Chapter was recently elected to a year of service as the 2016-2017 Section Five State FFA Officer during the 87th Wisconsin FFA Convention held in Madison.

Ballmer’s parents are Ronna Morton Ballmer and the late Jerry Ballmer. Her advisor is Marlina Jackson.

The biggest impact Ballmer made on her chapter was increasing the number of middle-school members and their participation by reestablishing a middle school quiz bowl team after the school went five years without one. This volunteer experience allowed her to research FFA history to create plans with the goal of meeting every learning style of every student.

Ballmer’s supervised agricultural experience (SAE) developed in agriculture

Ballmer is a freshman at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she is majoring in dairy science and life sciences communication. She plans to obtain her master’s degree in agricultural education.

During Ballmer’s year as a State FFA Officer, she will meet thousands of FFA members and will travel over 10,000 miles. In addition to meeting with members on the local, state, and national levels, she, alongside the rest of the State Officers, will meet with leaders in government, education, business, and agriculture.

The Wisconsin Association of FFA is a leading student organization due to the efforts of more than 20,400 students across the state. With a focus on premier leadership, personal growth, and career success, students’ FFA activities complement agricultural classroom instruction by giving them opportunities to apply their knowledge and skills. Members also gain real-world experience. These activities are dependent on donor funding through the Wisconsin FFA Foundation.

Obituary LEONA MAY BAUMGARTNER Leona May Baumgartner, 86, passed away on Monday, June 20, 2016, at Pleasant View Nursing Home, Monroe, Wisconsin. She was born on May 20, 1930, in Richfield Township, Adams County, Wisconsin, the daughter of Jay and Jessie (Gilden) Kitchen.

Leona married Leon Baumgartner on Dec. 15, 1948, in Evansville, Wisconsin. He passed away on May 1, 2016.

Green County Genealogical Society members and visitors are encouraged to bring a family heirloom or story to share for the group’s meeting on Saturday, July 2.

The society is expecting a large variety of items and stories to be shared.

The Green County Genealogical Society meeting will be held in the second floor meeting room of the Monroe Public Library at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 2. Visitors are always welcomed, and there is no cost to attend.

Leona was a homemaker and a former employee of Pleasant View Nursing Home.

She was active in the Ladies Guild, 4-H, and her church as a Sunday school teacher and member of the church council. Leona and her husband Leon spent several winters in Bandera, Texas, where she was active in their retirement community. Leona also loved to read and write poetry.

Leona is survived by her six children: Vicki Evenson, Vonda Fowler, Vanita (Richard) Baumgartner, Stacy (Dawn) Baumgartner, all of Brodhead, Scott (Gale) Baumgartner of Eddy, Texas, and Viane (Mike) Staniszewski of Ft. Myers, Florida; ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law: Norma Kitchen, of Rockford, Illinois and Edith Kitchen of Brodhead.

Leona was preceded in death by her

husband, Leon; her parents; two sisters and their spouses; six brothers and four of their spouses; and a grandson, Joshua Baumgartner.

Funeral Services will be held at 3 p.m. tomorrow, Thursday, June 23 at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Brodhead, with Rev. David Frey officiating.

Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Brodhead.

A visitation will be held from 1:30 p.m. until the time of services at the church.

A memorial fund will be established.

truck filled with smoke. The fire fighters were able to safely park the truck and extinguish the fire.

Bachim was not injured, and he used his seatbelt. The truck was not equipped with an air bag. The tanker truck sustained moderate damage and was towed from the scene.

Friday, June 24 Motor vehicle crash, damage At 11:22 a.m., deputies were dispatched to the bridge at the Argyle interchange: State Highway 81 and State Highway 69 South in the Town of Monroe for the report of a twovehicle crash that occurred on the bridge.

A garbage truck driven by Anthony R. Frank, 46, of Delavan, was traveling south on State Highway 81 when a car driven by Harry L. Turner Jr., 86, of Monticello, turned southbound from the State Highway 11 off ramp and collided with the dump truck.

No injuries were reported. Both drivers reported wearing their seatbelts. No airbags were deployed in either vehicle. Turner’s vehicle sustained moderate damage and was driven from the scene. The garbage truck sustained very minor damage and was driven from the scene.

Turner will be cited for Failure to Yield Right of Way from a stop sign.

Traffic violation At 5:26 p.m., deputies responded to the area of State Highway 11 and County Highway GG in the Town of Spring Grove for a traffic complaint.

David A Ethridge, 60, of Monroe, was cited for Operating without a Valid Driver’s License and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Ethridge was released pending a court appearance.

Saturday, June 25 Motor vehicle crash, damage At 2:50 p.m. deputies, along with Albany Police, responded to the North 5000 block of County Highway E in the Town of Albany for the report of a single-vehicle crash with no injuries. A minor from Albany was southbound when the vehicle drifted onto the west side shoulder. The driver overcorrected and lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle then crossed both lanes of travel and entered the east side ditch, where it struck a tree.

The driver and the passengers reported wearing their seatbelts and were uninjured. The vehicle was not equipped with air bags. The vehicle sustained very severe damage and was towed from the scene. The driver was cited for Failure to Maintain Control/Too Fast for Conditions and was released pending a court date.

Warrant arrest At 7:05 p.m., deputies arrested Zachery W. Jensen, 26, of New Glarus, on a Department of Corrections warrant in the North 8400 block of Klitzke Road in the Town of New Glarus. He was jailed.

Motor vehicle crash, damage At 9:38 p.m., deputies and Monticello Police responded to State Highway 69 and County Highway C in the Town of Washington for a two-vehicle crash with no injuries reported. Carol A. Komprood-Burke, 72, of Darlington, was traveling westbound on County Highway C when she stopped at the stop sign at the intersection of State Highway 69. After completing the stop, Komprood-Burke continued through the intersection, striking a southbound vehicle that was traveling on State Highway 69. Komprood-Burke and her passenger both reported wearing their seatbelts and were uninjured. There was no airbag deployment. The vehicle sustained moderate right-side damage and was towed from the scene.

The southbound vehicle was operated by Lisa A. Humphrey, 52, of Round Lake Park, Illinois. Humphrey and her passenger both reported wearing seatbelts and were uninjured.

There was no airbag deployment.

The vehicle sustained moderate frontend damage and was towed from the scene.

Komprood-Burke was cited for Failure to Yield the Right of Way at a Stop Sign and was released pending a court date.

As a former history major in college, I believe there is a value in knowing what has happened in the past. And I think it wise to just stop on a certain day to have a sense of where our lives are headed. I suppose we could even suggest that as we review our lives, we should consider the many blessings that have taken place.

As I look at the gospel reading for this Sunday, I am a bit challenged by a comment Jesus made to some people who wanted to follow him. They looked back to things in their lives

they first wanted to complete before taking that first step. Jesus said, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.” This seems a little harsh to me, but it’s true in much of what we do in life.

A couple of weeks ago, Amanda Stauffer, one of our accompanists in our congregation, shared a piano recital with us following worship. She included the “Warsaw Concerto,” which was a rather involved and longer piece. I marveled at the combinations of sound that flowed from the piano in the church. Amanda started

playing for the church when she was six, and she is now 16 and plays for one service a month. She also plays with her grandmother on many hymns nearly weekly. I am impressed with her ability, but also with the way she has stuck with her lessons and played through the years.

I wish I could play the piano. My folks got me an old, upright piano when I was thought I wanted to take lessons. I had three months of lessons during the summer when I was in third grade. I got busy with other things, some of which were great, like 4-H, and there were always the farm

there are two main goals to include in our lives: love God with all your heart, mind, and soul, and love your neighbor.

Each Sunday, we gather for worship and spend time focusing once again on those two points, taking corrective courses when necessary. It is a time to infuse our lives with God’s word for direction and strength and the care and needs of our neighbors. That’s a lot like putting our hands to the plow, focusing on that point ahead and putting one foot in front of the other.
