Matt Schmitt participated in the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Senior All-Star Game on Saturday, June 17, at JustAGame Fieldhouse. The all-stars had to raise money for a worthy cause, the MACC Fund (Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer). Schmitt collected a total of a little over $1,500. The AllStar game event racked up an astonishing $436,000 combined between the boys and girls. That total was a record-breaking mark for the event. Schmitt was recognized, along with all the other talented all-stars, with a banquet on Friday evening.
“It’s kind of tough to raise money, but it’s going for a good cause, and no matter how much you raise, it’s all going to be put into helping other people with cancer,” Schmitt said. “Everyone’s willing to donate for it, and the money is going to a good home.” Schmitt was on the Division 5 South squad. The south all-stars earned a 102-96 win over the Division 5 North team. Schmitt contributed 10 points on 2-for-5 shooting and 6-for-8 from the free-throw line in the contest. He also snatched five rebounds. Schmitt averaged a double-double for the Panthers during the regular season with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
“It was fun being a part of the AllStar Game experience. I was lucky enough to be picked for it. It was quite an honor to be a part of it and to play with some of the best seniors in the state,” Schmitt said. “It’s kind of fun being on one of the best teams in the state.” “It was a tremendous honor for Matt to earn a spot on the team with some of the best seniors in the state,” coach James Pickett said. “Matt’s hard work and dedication to basketball and all of his high school athletics paid off. He’s been the leader of our basketball program for the past four years. He finished his career with 1,135 career points. He will be very difficult to replace.”
Farm to Table dinner coming to Green County
Wisconsin Farm to Table has announced the location of the fourth annual Farm to Table dinner and fundraiser. Scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 19, the elegant dinner will be hosted in the rolling pasture of Voegeli Farms, Inc., a dairy farm situated between Monticello and New Glarus, Wis. This memorable dining experience is designed to bring consumers and farmers together to explore the world of agriculture, focusing on animal care, environmental practices, and the safe and pure food products consumed at family dinner tables throughout the year. Wisconsin agriculture will be discovered through a unique on-farm culinary experience. Guests may explore the taste of Wisconsin’s agricultural diversity from prestigious cheeses, wines, meats, vegetables, and beyond. The evening’s creations will be prepared and presented by local chef and self-proclaimed farm kid, Tyler Sailsbery. Chef Sailsbery is the head chef and owner of The Black Sheep in Whitewater, Wis., where he works with local farmers to craft unique dishes, packed with fresh ingredients and divine flavors. Chef Sailsbery also works as the executive chef and general manager for Fin & Hooves, inside the Whitewater Country Club, which offers a casual and fun atmosphere, with a menu focused on local beef and fresh seafood. Located at N7190 State Road 69, Monticello, Wis., the Voegeli Farm is home to a long lineage of Brown Swiss dairy cattle. Bryan Voegeli, his brother Jimmy, mother Alice, children Brienna and Christopher, and the farm’s great staff are all involved in this sixth-generation dairy
farm that was homesteaded in 1854. In 1895, the first Brown Swiss cows to set foot on the farm were purchased by Voegeli’s great-grandfather. This dairy breed has flourished on the farm’s rolling hills ever since – thanks in part to Voegeli’s father, Howard’s, legacy. Now composed of just over 1,000 acres with 220 Swiss cows in the milking herd, the Voegeli Farm still carries symbols of the region’s Swiss heritage while supplying milk for both award-winning cheese and most recently, a new yogurt product. “Directly connecting consumers with the food produced from our farm and surrounding farms in an atmosphere we get to work in every day is an opportunity we couldn’t pass up,” Voegeli said. “We’re excited for the quality foods and beverages showcased, along with the fun, on-farm experience, to create lasting, fond memories for everyone attending.” This storied dairy farm, coupled with the lush rolling backdrop of Green County and Wisconsin’s long-standing agricultural history, serves as a prime location to bring together consumers and farmers from around their respective regions. Wisconsin Farm to Table is a non-profit event organization established in 2013 to offer an on-farm experience with a farm tour, elegant dinner, and dialogue between those interested in agriculture and where their food originates. Mary Stelter, current Parkview Junior/Senior High School assistant principal and director of pupil services, has been promoted to the position of principal. Stelter will assume her new position effective July 1. The board, administration and 7-12 faculty and students are excited about her promotion and look forward to her leadership. Stelter is completing her 22nd year in the Parkview School District and her second as assistant principal and director of pupil services. Prior to her current administrative role, she served as a special education teacher at the high school. Stelter’s tenure in the district and experience
with special education rules and procedures has aided her effectiveness in her current role and should be beneficial in her new role as principal. Stelter received her administrative degree from Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) and her Director of Pupil Services license from Viterbo University in 2015. Stelter is replacing outgoing principal Bill Trow, who just completed his eighth year as the principal and resigned in May. The district is currently seeking a replacement for the vacancy created by Stelter’s promotion and hopes to have the position filled around the first of July.
