Congratulations to Haley Knauf, Alyssa Knauf, and Tessa Janecke on being selected to the 2017-18 Team Wisconsin girls’ hockey teams. Haley Knauf will join the U16 team, while Alyssa Knauf and Janecke will play on the U14 team.

Team Wisconsin held two elimination tryouts. Based on their performances, all three girls were selected to be on the Tier 1 Team Wisconsin Girls’ Hockey Team, which will play before and after the regular 2017-18 hockey season.

Team Wisconsin plays a highly competitive Tier 1 schedule, playing teams such as Chicago Mission, Madison Capitols, St. Louis Jr. Blues, MN Elite teams, and more.

All three girls played on Monroe Youth Hockey Bantam A team for past two years. For the 2017-18 season, Haley Knauf and Alyssa Knauf (from Albany) will play with Monroe girls on the Rock County Fury high school girls’ coop for the regular season. Janecke, from Orangeville, Ill., will play her regular season on the Bantam A team.

Congratulations for earning a spot on Team Wisconsin.

Hazardous chemical drop-offs for Rock County residents are June 24 and Aug. 26

The county-wide Clean Sweep chemical drop-off days will be Saturday, June 24, 9 a.m. to noon at the City of Beloit Public Works garage and Saturday, Aug. 26, 9 a.m. to noon at the Rock County Public Works garage in Janesville. Hazardous chemicals can be risky to use and store at home due to flammability, spills, vapors, or exposure to eyes, lungs, or skin. They are too toxic to go in the trash or down the drain. Safe disposal can be costly and inconvenient.

For regular cleaning or maintenance in the home, garage, lawn, and garden, try less toxic chemicals or preventative methods first. Use hazardous chemicals as a last resort or for extreme circumstances; buy a little to see if it works and gauge how much you will need. Read and compare labels; “caution” means mildly toxic, “warning” means moderately toxic, and “danger” is highly toxic.

For vehicle maintenance, keep all used oil and antifreeze in separate sealed containers and recycle regularly to avoid stockpiles; these fluids can be recycled year-round for free locally in typical household quantities. Check with your city, waste service, or auto shop/retailer. Recycling of other vehicle fluids varies; check http://earth911.com or with your auto shop/retailer.

Clean Sweep is made possible with a grant from the Wisconsin Department of Ag, Trade, and Consumer Protection and donations from cities, towns, and Rock County.

The following are some frequently asked questions about the program: Who can participate? Any household or farm located in Rock County or any eligible Wisconsin business can participate. Businesses must use Business Clean Sweep; separate rates apply. For those outside Rock County, contact your county solid waste department since all neighboring counties have their own hazardous waste programs.

Is there a fee, and how big is a bin?

For hazardous residential chemicals, fees are by the bin, which is about the size of a paper box or small recycling bin. You provide the bin or box. The first bin of material is free; each extra bin is $5, limit four bins per household; extra fees apply for loads over four bins. Farms pay no fees on the first 200 pounds of ag chemical waste. Eligible businesses pay only disposal cost. There are no mobilization fees, and they can receive up to 50% off disposal cost for ag chemicals.

What chemicals should I bring?

Priority chemicals include pesticides, mercury, old vehicle fuels, solvents, thinners, wood preservatives, pool chemicals, and unknown chemicals, to name a few. Latex paint is not accepted. Oil-based paint is accepted but is limited to one box per resident.

What can I do with latex paint?

Latex paint can be trashed if it is solid and lids are removed. Make latex paint solid with absorbent material like kitty litter, spill absorber like

Sara Jordan, Alexis Goecks named all-stars

Seniors Sara Jordan and Alexis Goecks participated in the Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association senior all-star games at Woodside Sports Complex last Tuesday. This was a well-deserved honor for two extremely talented players.

“It meant a lot. I was really happy that I got to be a part of the all-star game. It was a really cool experience to meet all these different girls and just hang out with them and just have fun,” Goecks said.

“It was a dream come true to win state, and I couldn’t have ended my season with a better year. It was an honor to play in the all-star game and a great honor to play with the best senior softball players in the state. Our team bonded really well, and it was so much fun,” Jordan said.

Goecks and Jordan were selected by area coaches to play in the talent-rich games. This prestigious event consisted of the best seniors across the state.

Goecks and Jordan were on the Division 4-5 All-Star white squad.

A huge aspect of this wonderful event is the Special Olympics. The AllStars had to raise a minimum of $300 for Special Olympics. The Panther duo raised an amazing $1,605; as a team, the white squad raised an astonishing $7,033.

Green County Cheese Days announces t-shirt design contest

Green County Cheese Days invites both amateur and professional artists to submit designs for consideration in a 2018 Cheese Days T-shirt Contest.

The design can be submitted in any format. For digital files, the preferred format is vector. Digital files can also be submitted in pdf or jpg at least 300 dpi. Hand-drawn designs can also be submitted on paper. If a hand-drawn design is chosen as winner, the design will be scanned and digitized. Cheese Days reserves the right to modify designs as needed for commercial application to be used on t-shirts or other merchandise for sale.

All designs must be original artwork with no reproduced or copyrighted images. Designs should be submitted in no more than four colors. Designs must include the wording “Green County Cheese Days” and “Monroe WI” (or use Wisconsin spelled out). Slogans or other wording can be added.

The winner (or winners) will receive $100 cash, as well as tickets for Monroe Optimist deep fried cheese curds and Cheese Days merchandise, including a t-shirt with the winning design. The winning artist(s) will be invited to ride in the Swiss Colony Cheese Days Parade on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2018.

Entries are due by Sept. 14, 2017.

On Monday evening, the all-stars enjoyed a recognition banquet at Chula Vista Resort.

“I didn’t realize how many kids were there until they started announcing the all-stars. There were a lot of Division 1 all-stars. There were a couple more Division 1 teams than there were Division 2, 3, 4, 5, but it was really cool to see the different Six Rivers girls go up there,” Goecks said.

The two-day event consisted of 17 teams representing all five divisions.

Goecks and Jordan’s white squad defeated the blue squad 5-4 in game one.

In game two, the white squad picked up a 9-3 win over the Division 4-5 AllStar black team. Unlike just 72 hours before in the state championship, these games had a little bit different tone and less pressure as Goecks rotated defensive positions. This would be a common sight as the coaches made sure to get everyone on the field. Goecks went 1-for-1 with two walks and was hit by a pitch in the contest. Jordan went 1-for-4 with a bloop RBI base hit over second.

RESOLUTION 6-6-17 RESOLUTION PROVIDING FOR THE SALE OF $9,500,000 GENERAL OBLIGATION BUILDING BONDS, SERIES 2017 WHEREAS, on June 14, 2016, the County Board of Supervisors of Green County, Wisconsin (the “County”), by a vote of at least 3/4 of the members-elect, adopted an initial resolution (the “Initial Resolution”) authorizing the issuance of general obligation bonds or promissory notes in an amount not to exceed $18,000,000 for the public purpose of financing the construction, equipping and furnishing of a new Government Services Building and paying related costs, including the demolition and removal of the existing building (the “Project”); WHEREAS, the County has previously issued obligations in the principal amount of $3,000,000 authorized by the Initial Resolution; and WHEREAS, the County Board of Supervisors of the County hereby finds and determines that additional general obligation bonds in the principal amount of $9,500,000 should be issued at this time pursuant to the Initial Resolution.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the County Board of Supervisors of the County that: Section 1. Issuance of the Bonds. The County shall issue general obligation bonds authorized by the Initial Resolution in the principal amount of $9,500,000, which bonds shall be designated “General Obligation Building Bonds, Series 2017” (the “Bonds”).

Section 2. Sale of the Bonds. The County Board of Supervisors hereby authorizes and directs that the Bonds be offered for public sale.

Section 3. Notice of Sale. The County Clerk (in consultation with the County’s financial advisor, PFM Financial Advisors LLC (“PFM”)) is hereby authorized and directed to cause the sale of the Bonds to be publicized at such times and in such manner as the County Clerk may determine and to cause copies of a complete Official Notice of Sale and other pertinent data to be forwarded to interested bidders as the County Clerk may determine.

Section 4. Official Statement. The County Clerk (in consultation with PFM) shall also cause an Official Statement to be prepared and distributed. The appropriate County officials shall determine when the Official Statement is final for purposes of Securities and Exchange Commission Rule 15c2 12 and shall certify said Statement, such certification to constitute full authorization of such Statement under this resolution.

Section 5. Award of the Bonds. Following receipt of bids for the Bonds, the County Board of Supervisors shall take further action to provide the details of the Bonds and to award the Bonds to the lowest responsible bidder.

Section 6. Conflicting Resolutions; Severability; Effective Date. All prior resolutions, rules or other actions of the County Board of Supervisors or any parts thereof in conflict with the provisions hereof shall be, and the same are, hereby rescinded insofar as the same may so conflict. In the event that any one or more provisions hereof shall for any reason be held to be illegal or invalid, such illegality or invalidity shall not affect any other provisions hereof. The foregoing shall take effect immediately upon adoption and approval in the manner provided by law.

RESOLUTION 6-7-17 RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF RETAINING AND EXPANDING WISCONSIN’S AGING AND DISABILITY RESOURCE CENTERS’ DEMENTIA CARE SPECIALIST PROGRAM AND PROMOTING THE WORK OF THE DEMENTIA FRIENDLY COALITION IN GREEN COUNTY WHEREAS, in Wisconsin, it is estimated that 115,000 individuals age 65 and older are living with some form of clinically diagnosable dementia, and by 2040 that population is expected to grow to 240,000; and WHEREAS, in Green County, it is estimated that 748 individuals are living with some form of clinically diagnosable dementia, and the care and treatment of persons with dementia is now being described as a public health emergency; and WHEREAS, 90% of people with dementia live in their home and 22% live alone; a diagnosis of dementia doesn’t mean a person has lost their dignity or their ability to remain in their home and part of the community; and WHEREAS, Green County has made a significant commitment to persons with dementia through the critical work of the Aging and Disability Resource Center’s (ADRC’s) Dementia Care Specialist (DCS), and through the work of the Dementia Friendly Coalition; and WHEREAS, the DCS and Dementia Friendly Coalition strive to improve the quality of life for all those affected, including people suffering from memory loss and their caregivers, while maintaining them in the community where they want to live and cost savings to taxpayers are realized; and WHEREAS, each day that an individual remains in the community, and outside of expensive publicly funded institutional care facilities, saves the taxpayers an estimated $161 per day or $58,925 annually, making the DCS program a wise and sound investment of public dollars; and WHEREAS, the ADRC office located in Green County has experienced a steady growth in contacts by customers, caregivers and professionals (3691 contacts in 2016); and WHEREAS, the Governor’s proposed budget would eliminate funding for the DCS positions in 2017-2019, removing expertise and coalition support from the community.

The Green County Health Department presented details on what they do for the residents of Green County to promote optimal health and wellbeing. The spectrum of services offered benefit everyone from infants to the elderly and truly make a difference in the lives of Green County residents. The thought, care, and dedication evident in the services offered makes one proud to live in Green County.

Among the other business covered were several resolutions, in-

cluding contracting staff augmentation for the development and implementation of the county’s IT future infrastructure. The county has been having the IT systems audited, and upgrades are needed, especially as we prepare to set up the new Government Services building. The IT contractor will act as an IT director, assisting and guiding the county with IT now and into the future.

The board approved centerline and edgeline painting of approximately 150 paint miles of roads, the elimination and creation of a position at the Highway Department to raise the lead foreman’s salary to market amount, and the authorization to create a Human Resources

Newcomer Funeral Home, Brodhead, Wis., followed by a Graveside Service at the Greenwood Cemetery, Brodhead, with full Military Rites.

Green County Relay for Life is June 24 in Brodhead - three requests For a number of years, the attendance at the relays has sadly been falling. This is heartbreaking, and hopefully it can pick up this year. The Green County Relay will take place at the Brodhead High School track. Registration and set-up begins at 2:45 p.m. with events beginning at 4 p.m. with the survivor lap.

I hope you can take a few hours out of your schedule to join us. So, to Brodhead and all Green County communities: come on by and show your support!

What Relay means to me: hope through cancer research. Research is everything to the lives of those who are fighting the battle, to the many who may one day be a victim to this disease.

The Green County Board met Tuesday, June 13, for the monthly meeting. There was quite a bit of business on the agenda due to not having a meeting in May. Two annual reports were presented: the Clerk of Circuit Court and the Health Department. I am consistently amazed at how much I learn about the services and departments in the county through the annual reports and presentations.

Green County Master Gardeners to tour New Glarus School Gardens The Green County Master Gardeners will be touring one of their own projects, the New Glarus School Gardens on Thursday, June 22, at 7 p.m. The gardens are at New Glarus Schools, 1420 2nd Street, New Glarus.

The garden features raised beds and growing plots for various produce. The school garden is a joint effort between the school, Master Gardeners, and local volunteers. The planting process usually involves elementary summer school classes,

who also help nurture and weed the plants. As the growing procedure progresses, the produce is harvested for use in the local community.

The Green County Wisconsin Master Gardeners Association was formed in Green County in 2004 to provide Master Gardeners with opportunities for professional development and community service.

Master Gardener Volunteers help to provide beauty and growth in communities for flower, plant, and vegetative areas.

Summer activities abound

Swim trips to area pools in Brodhead and New Glarus are scheduled for Wednesday June 21, and Wednesdays July 5 through Aug. 16. The bus leaves from Albany Village Park at 12:30 p.m. and returns at around 4:45 p.m. The cost is $4 for an Albany resident and $5 for an out-of-town resident.

Other activities throughout the summer are a Scavenger Hunt on Wednesday, June 28, at Albany Village Park from 1 to 3 p.m.; Capture the Flag on Monday, June 9, at Albany Village Park from 1 to 3 p.m.; Campfire Day on Monday, June 26, at Albany Village Park from 1 to 3 p.m.; and a trip to Noah’s Ark with a bus leaving Albany Village Park at 8:15 a.m. and returning around 8 p.m. The cost is $28 for Albany Village residents and $33 for outof-town residents.

July activities include Fiesta Day with tacos and a piñata on Monday, July 10, from 1 to 3 p.m.; bowling on Monday, July 17, from 9:30 to 1:30 p.m. for $5; Tie Dye at Village Park from 1 to 3 pm on Tuesday, July 18 (bring a white T-shirt); Campfire Day on Monday, July 24, at Albany Village Park from 1 to 3 p.m.; tubing on the Sugar River on July 25 at S&B tubing at 12:45 p.m. for kids 12 and up with a cost of $10; and a trip to Shedd Aquarium in Chicago on July 31, leaving from Albany Village Park at 7 a.m. sharp with a cost for children 2 and younger at $8, $28 for ages 3 through 19.

In August, a Bike Hike will take place on the Sugar River Trail on Tuesday, Aug. 1. Participants will meet at the Catholic Church parking lot next to the Albany Community Day Care and will be leaving at 1 p.m. Don’t forget to bring a water bottle.

On Monday Aug. 7, play Bingo at Albany Village Park from 1 to 3 p.m., complete with prizes.

Main Street Monroe to host spicy Cajun swamp party Big fun on the bayou at the next Concert on the Square

“Laissez les bons temps rouler!”

That’s the Cajun way of saying “let the good times roll.” Main Street Monroe brings the flavors of the bayou to downtown Monroe for the next Concert on the Square on Friday, June 23, starting at 6:30 p.m.

The Copper Box Band will take center stage with a genre-bending fusion of rowdy roots and bluesy pop, along with generous helpings of Zydeco and Americana. This four-piece band, led by husband and wife team Danny and Michelle Jerabek, brings an amazing variety of instruments to life: guitar, saxophone, flute, button accordion, piano, cornet, sousaphone, and even the

washboard.

For the June 23 concert, everyone is encouraged to extend an invitation to a friend or neighbor who doesn’t usually attend, and to ask him or her to sit with you to share the fun. Throughout the evening, look out for brightly colored beads and a special appearance by a very tall Mardi Gras jester.

Intermission will feature some lively “Street Corner Jazz” led by Janine Brown, Monroe High School Director of Bands.

Main Street Monroe’s featured non-profit for the evening is Shakespeare on the Edge, a non-profit group bringing arts programming to area

youth through visual arts, movement, theatre, improve, team building, and fun. Other groups featured this season include Family Promise of Green County, Care Net Pregnancy Center, Literacy Council, Faith Addiction Awareness, and Monroe Volunteer Firefighter Association.

Concert goers can enter for a chance to win the “Best Seat in the House” contest with premium seating on custom Adirondack chairs from Wooden Trooper, plus refreshments and swag.
