Green County piano students win 2018 Gold Cup music fest trophies Nine Green County piano students were winners of 2018 Gold Cup trophies during the Federation of Music Festival held in Janesville this spring.

Students auditioned in memorized solos or playing from sight.

To qualify for the trophy, students must earn 15 points. Points are based on successful performances of two memorized solors, or sight playing and range from one to five points annually.

After earning one trophy, students may work for additional trophies.

The nine winners are students of piano teacher Rita Farris.

Albany school board members had good fiscal news a second year in a row last week, as they closed out another school year.

Board treasurer Phil Kubesh reported the district was $170,000 in the black as of April 30, at the board’s regular June 11 meeting.

“We’ve really been working hard to get our finances under control,” said board president Steve Elliott in a phone interview after the meeting.

“We not it’s not responsible to keep spending reserves.”

Albany School District, like many small town, rural and village systems around Wisconsin, has struggled for 6 or 7 years with deficits.

Yet one strong factor influencing budget difficulties for many smaller districts is rooted deeply in a state policy now 20 years old.

Wisconsin Act 27 passed into state law in 1997 requires the Department of Public Instruction to transfer funding from a student’s resident school district when he or she takes part in open enrollment.

That’s a $7,000 per pupil loss to the resident school where state funding, with spending caps, too, is critically important to all districts.

In a community like Albany, without a manufacturing plant, company home office, or big distribution center, busy, weary parents must often commute away to work. Reasons to open enroll their children in other districts can add up and up.

Albany’s seven-member school board has been struggling to come up to speed in order to meet such challenges. Of four members, two are still in their first term, two are newly elected. The longest serving member, Adam Kopp, has only been with the board of education 7 years.

tendent Amy Vesperman with helping the board identify key budgetary needs in her short 2 years in Albany.

Kubesh told the board meeting last week that he will be meeting with Vesperman and new superintendent Bill Trow regarding the budget in the coming weeks. Trow takes over officially in July, Elliott said.

Board members also last week discussed another feature of Wisconsin school’s fiscal landscape: those spending caps that routinely force many districts to go to voters when increased operating funds are needed to cope with rising costs and capital revenues are required to maintain, expand or improve facilities.

Since 1990, Wisconsin school districts have passed more than 1,600 referendums totaling $12 billion — more than half of that in the last decade, according to a 2017 Milwaukee Journal Sentinel feature on the issue.

These votes pushed up local property taxes to pay for capital projects, maintain and expand programs and services, and finance retirement benefits.

In 2017 ballot measures alone, Wisconsin voters agreed to 40 district requests to boost local school spending an additional $700 million, the Journal Sentinel reported.

In more than a third the total referendum measures that year, voters refused to allow increased spending.

Some districts had to cut programs or lay off staff. Building maintenance and improvements were deferred.

Albany school board members last week discussed their district’s relationship with general contractor JP Cullen and architectural firm Bray of Milwaukee.

Public meetings have been held with Albany residents in April and May to look at sketches and designs for structural changes and improve-

ments to Albany School property, which the firms prepared after walking through facilities and assessing needs.

“I can’t speak for everyone on the board,” said Elliott in the phone interview with the Independent Register, “but we are not considering anything that’s not financially practical or possible for Albany School District.

“The board is concerned about some of the projects that have been described. Necessity and frugality are very important to us.”

Board members in last week’s meeting expressed concerned about the large cost estimates for renovation from the companies.

Kopp, who leads the building and grounds committee for the board, suggested more conversations with the public and staff, also a community survey prior to considering going to referendum in April 2019.

Albany’s 1922 building utilities are very costly for the limited usage.

The board discussed where it could move Community Center activities if the 1922 building were torn down.

Other improvements Cullen and Bray studied would address, moving administrative offices closer to an entrance for the school, partly as a security measure, also library improvements and making a telle-presence room two rooms instead of a large room with a divider.

Albany has been taking part in some classes with Monticello and Juda by televised instruction that helps share teacher costs, particularly for advanced and high-level courses, important to students who want to go onto college after graduation.

Next meeting for the board is tonight, Wednesday, June 20, at 6 p.m.

Kopp encouraged all board members to attend that meeting.

Public assistance important to local law enforcement stated witnesses report the fire started in the cargo box of the truck. Then spread quickly to the driver’s compartment.

The fire did cause a small explosion that is believed to be the result of the fire reaching the truck’s hydraulic system. Portions of the hydraulic system were found in the front yard of a nearby residence.

Due to the amount of diesel fuel in the tanks, which leaked into the

ground, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources responded. Police reopened the street at 5:15 p.m.

No one was injured as a result of this fire. Police are still investigating the cause of the fire.

Assisting Brodhead police and fire department staff were the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Brodhead Public Works, Brodhead Water and Light, and Northshore Environmental Construction.

Brodhead Police witnessed a motorcycle on 15th Street at 1st Center Avenue last Wednesday, June 13, fail to yield the right away from a stop sign.

The motorcycle nearly collided with a car that was northbound on 1st Center Avenue.

Reporting officers said the incident happened at 9:21 p.m.

Police attempted to stop the motorcycle, but terminated the pursuit on State Highway 11 just outside the City limits.

Police state the motorcycle was last seen traveling eastbound on State Highway 11 heading toward the Village of Orfordville.

Police describe the suspect motorcycle a “crotch rocket” style, which was blue and white in color. The driver of the motorcycle was wearing a matching blue and white jacket and a dark colored helmet.

The Brodhead Police are asking anyone with information pertaining to this pursuit to contact them by calling 608 897-2112 or by texting Green County Crime Stoppers at “GREENSTOP.” plus your message to “274367” Sheriff deputies thank public in Huber Work Release inmate’s return Randall Scott Zuber, 40, of Monticello was located in the City of Monroe on Sunday June 17th and was taken into custody.

Zuber had failed to return to the Green County Jail from his work release privileges on Saturday June 16th. The Sheriff’s Office thanks the public for assisting in locating Zuber.

Garbage truck engulfed by fire June 15 explodes On Friday, June 15, at 10:50 a.m. the Brodhead police officers and fire department personnel responded to the 500 block of East 4th Avenue for a public report of a garbage truck on fire.

Green staff, supervisors study CAFO rule recommendations

Green County Board committees are not wasting time getting started working on the recommendations of the Livestock Facility Study Group.

So far at least the Zoning and Land Use Department and the Land and Water Conservation Department have begun discussions at committee meetings.

You will be able to keep updated with the progress of the recommendations on the Green County University of Wisconsin-Extension website at www.green.uwex.edu.

As the committees make progress on the recommendations, progress will be reported to Victoria Solomon of Green County UW-Extension, who will then have it posted

to the site.

I have already heard from a constituent and concerned resident about one of the recommendations that was in the agenda, and I discussed that concern at the June 7 Land and Water Conservation Committee meeting.

There is much to be considered; if you have input, please contact your county board supervisor or committee members. You can find their contact information on the Green County website at www. co.green.wi.gov.

You are also welcome to attend the committee meetings and hear the discussions in person; meetings and agendas are listed on the county website as well.

At the June County Board meet-

ing on Tuesday, June 12, Steve Schneider of Bug Tussel Wireless made a presentation about rural high speed internet. With help from a grant Green County Development Corporation received, Bug Tussel is working to bring high speed internet to Green County.

There are a few towers already up and working, more will be connected by the end of summer including the new one on Highway E in Albany, and there are sites being scrutinized for more towers.

Schneider reported that there will be 21 sites in the county when all is said and done, vastly improving access to quality internet service, as well as providing more towers for cellular coverage throughout the county.

Also at the June County Board meeting, Chris Narveson, Green County Highway Commissioner, announced the upcoming closure of Highway 69 between Monticello and Monroe. There will be a bridge replacement causing the closure from County Highway C in Monticello to Highway DR in Monroe, from June 20 until Sept. 20. The detour will be Highway C to Highway N to State Road 81, with the speed limit reduced to 45 mph and a 4-way stop at the intersection of C and N. The Green County Board passed several resolutions including one that eliminated a position in the Treasurer’s office and the Zoning office, and created a shared position between the two offices.

Supervisors approved new positions and modifications in Human Services, as Children’s Long Term Support will no longer be contracted out, but handled in house.

A fund transfer was approved for Pleasant View plant operations. The minutes of the meeting can be found on the Green County website.

Rep. Pocan sets summer office hours in visits around 2nd District U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan announced last week the schedule for his summer office hours across Wisconsin’s 2nd Congressional District.

Outreach staff from Pocan’s district office will be present at each event. They will work directly with constituents to answer questions and help address concerns with federal agencies.

Services the federal government provides include assistance extended to veterans from the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, beneficiaries of the Social Security Administration, and citizens who need passports.

Nicole Jean Nath Nicole Jean Nath graduated from the University of Wisconsin Superior on May 19 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology.

Her very proud family includes parents Russ and Donna Nath and grandparents Howard and Lois Nath.

Rachel and Lauren Hammes of Parkview School District in Orfordville are among them.

They were selected for Wisconsin School Music Association’s (WSMA) 2018 High School State Honors Music Project.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, the High School State Honors Music Project provides musically talented students with the opportunity to rehearse and perform with the nation’s finest conductors in a professional and highly disciplined setting.

Sopranos Lauren and Rachel are rehearsing with the state honors Treble Choir, this year under the direction of Edith Copley, who directs choral studies at Northern Arizona University.

Copley has conducted more than 30 all-state choirs. Choral ensembles under her direction have performed at Carnegie Hall and have toured internationally in Europe, China, Australia and South Africa.

Copley has her own choral series with Santa Barbara Music Publications.

Students are challenged to perform at their musical best throughout the rehearsal period, which culminates with an inspired performance, celebrating the reach of music education statewide.

“When students are challenged beyond what is possible in a classroom, the results are often inspiring and even magical. Honors students learn that hard work, commitment, responsibility and working together for the good of the ensemble are the keys to success in music and in life,” said Victoria Donahue, WSMA program director, in a release about the program.

Parkview High School students Rachel and Lauren Hammes are singing a happy tune this summer, as sopranos in the State Honors Treble Choir.

Auditions were held in seven sites across the state this past February. Of the more than 1,500 auditions, 428 students in grades 9, 10 and 11 were invited to be part of the WSMA High School State Honors Music Project ensembles.

Students selected to participate in the WSMA High School State Honors Music Project meet for the first time at an intensive four-day summer camp at UW-Green Bay. The WSMA High School Honors Summer Camp is an essential component to the High School Honors Project experience as

it is the first opportunity the selected students have to see their music, meet the conductor and rehearse as a newly formed ensemble.

Camp dates are as follows: June 16 to 19 Band, Mixed Choir and Jazz Ensemble; this week, June 20 to 23, Orchestra and Treble Choir. All Honors students reconvene in Madison in late October to perform at the annual Wisconsin State Music Conference.

Apple, peach tree issues emerging this season Fruit tree issues are beginning to emerge as a seasonal problem. No fruit, blackish/brownish color on leaves, lack of flowers, and other issues can be a challenge on fruit trees early in the season.

“If you grow peach/cherry/apricot trees and do not have any young fruit right now, there is a strong chance that the cold winter is to blame,” states Grant McCarty, Local Foods and Small Farms Extension Educator.

“When temperatures reach below -9 F for multiple days in the winter, this will kill buds since fruit appears on two-year old wood. Most apple and pear trees can tolerate these colder winters. It doesn’t mean your peach/ cheery/apricot tree is dead but that you’ll need to wait next year for this fruit” Some problems in the backyard orchard originate from the previous season. “Apple Scab is a disease where the pathogens originate on fallen leaves around the base of the tree from last year. To control this disease, you should remove any debris that is currently there.”

If you do not have any fruit on your apple trees, you may find that you do not have a match. “Apple trees need more than one variety to cross-pollinate. So you always want to have 2-3 varieties that bloom at the same time to ensure your trees are getting pollinated,” continues McCarty.

Many issues in the backyard orchard can be addressed during the season. “Remove any fallen fruit will keep some insects from being a problem. Set up insect traps for apple maggot. Clean up leaf debris on an on-going basis. Be vigilant in diagnosing diseases,” McCarty states.

For assistance in addressing insect and disease problems on fruit, the Master Gardener Hotline is available at the University of Illinois Extension office in Winnebago County at 815-986-4357 on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon.

Training for allied industry professionals with limited farm background, experience

Due to high demand, the Professional Dairy Producers® (PDPW) announce a second Agricultural Professional Partnerships® (APPs) training. The professional development training is designed for non-farm professionals allied with the dairy industry. The APPs experience is held on three active dairy farms on July 24-26, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., departing to and from the Crowne Plaza Hotel, in Madison, Wis., each day.

The APPs training will provide a hands-on experience and insights to the modern dairy farm business. Topics covered will include animal welfare, consumer trust, food safety, environmental stewardship, dairy economics, business strategies and beyond. Modules include the Fundamentals of Dairy Science; Farming, Field and Food Fundamentals; and Fundamentals of Dairy Business Management.

“APPs provides industry professionals the on-farm experience needed to succeed.” said Marty Hallock, dairy farmer in Mondovi, Wis. and past president of the PDPW Board of Directors.

“Too often, people with no dairy background are surprised that farmers make the decisions they do – they don’t see the whole picture. APPs gives them the whole picture.”

The training provides food system and allied industry professionals with the confidence and enhanced credibility needed to succeed in their job. Attendees engage in a safe learning environment to explore terminology, management practices and build their dairy business acumen, resulting in greater understanding and empathy when working with farmers.

Adopt a Classroom teaches city youth about farming

The Winnebago-Boone Farm Bureau has a mission to be the voice, resource, and advocate for farm families and agriculture, while promoting stewardship for today and future generations. The Farm Bureau has implemented the Agriculture in the Classroom program to enforce their goal of inspiring our local youths’ interest in agriculture. To do this, they bring agriculture into elementary and middle school classrooms and provide hands on learning focused on the agriculture industry. They also adopt a classroom every year.

The Adopt a Classroom program has been in place for four years. This year, they have adopted a 4th grade class at Whitehead in Rockford and a 4th grade class at Washington Academy in Belvidere. The AITC program goes into these classrooms once a month and educates students on various aspects of the agriculture industry.

Each year the program strives to teach students that agriculturalists produce all of the goods we consume. They do this by using pizza as an example. Diane Cleland, Ag Literacy Coordinator, goes into the classroom once a month for four months to cover how without wheat, dairy, pork, and vegetables that farmers produce, we would not be able to enjoy pizza. The students get to interact with real farmers who take time

out of their busy day to explain the crops they specialize in. This year, Marshall Newhouse of Capron volunteered his time to explain wheat, Mary Brubach of Garden Prairie educated students on vegetables, John Mitchell of Winnebago and Amy Hildebrandt of South Beloit entered the classrooms to share on the dairy industry, and Richard Beuth of Leaf River and John Cleland of Capron went in to talk about pork.

On Friday, May 18, the Whitehead Elementary School’s Adopt-AClassrooms got to partake in a very interesting trip to Mitchell’s Dairy Farm hosted by John and Aaron Mitchell. They got to be up close and personal with dairy cattle. The field trip to the farm was very educational for the students, teachers, and parent volunteers. Visitors got to see every step of the daily routine on a dairy farm, from the calf barn and milking parlor to manure recycling and feed rations.

“It’s always a joy to watch the students interact with the sights, sounds, and smells of the farm for the first time,” said Diane Cleland.

Washington County operation one of the most automated dairy farms in the United States, helping solve labor issues.

From his computer and smartphone, dairy farmer Craig Finke controls his barn’s lights and doors and can prompt or monitor the cleaning of the barn. Meanwhile, robots feed and milk the farm’s 120 dairy cows.

Automation gives Finke more time to focus on management during his consistent interaction with the bovines, which he says love an occasional scratch on the back.

“From a physical labor standpoint, I’m not nearly as ‘married to the cows’ as I used to be,” says Finke, who operates Finke Farms with his wife and mother in Washington County, about 50 miles from St. Louis. “With the amount of dedication dairy farming takes, you still spend a lot of time with the cows, but automation makes it different because you’re given the flexibility that was really hard to come by before.”

In the five years since Finke adopted robotic milkers and added other comfort measures, such as flexible stalls, sand bedding and back scratchers, his cows produce an average of 30-35 percent more milk.

The Finke family operates one of the most automated dairy farms in the United States, and it wasn’t for the sake of loving gadgets. Finke began to have back problems that limited physical labor. Automation provided the solution to keep this fifth-generation farm in the dairy business and around for the sixth.

Where dairy cows roam Finke’s cows spend their day freely roaming the barn.

Finke’s Washington County dairy farm also includes an automatic feeder.

“The cows can decide to get milked, go eat, lay down, walk around or go get a scratch from the brush,” Finke says. “They decide what they want to do all day long in that area.”

Leg bands identify each cow to one of two robots, which milk each cow up to three times per day. The robotic milker gives her cherry- or caramel-flavored pellet treats for doing so. The machine identifies cows that enter the milk machine too often and releases them without a treat or milking. On the other hand, Finke and his part-time employees receive a computer-generated alert about cows that enter the milkers too seldom.

“The amount of information you can get from robots is incredible – milk quality, quantity, breeding information – there are very few limits to the information,” says Finke, who sets parameters to receive alerts of abnormal cow activity. “The data we get from cows and the automated system is second to none.”

Automation not an automatic yes Finke called it a “gut-wrenching decision” to go automated on Nov. 18, 2013. Finke spent months looking at costs and research, even traveling to Holland to view a robotic feeding system unavailable in the United States.

Since the family’s adoption of automation and their addition of various cow comfort measures, the farm’s cows produce 30 to 35 percent more milk on average per cow, or just over 80 pounds (about 9.5 gallons) per cow per day.

“Most people don’t realize that dairy farmers try to take care of their cows like their kids. The more effort we put in the cows, the more they return to us.”

Finke’s cows act happy, produce milk well and behave quietly. The cows have access to brushes that scratch their backs and stalls with comfortable sand bedding. The barn’s flexible stalls move for the cows, so the cows don’t bruise or injure themselves when bumping against them.

“We still have a lot of contact with the cows, but it’s more managing the cows and working with them rather than the milking and feeding process and making sure the alleys are clean,” Finke says.

The animals stay clean and free of manure because an automated schedule flushes the barn frequently.

The cows also receive a nutritionally specific diet generated from crops grown on the farm.

“Robot barns are extremely quiet,” Finke says. “You don’t hear cows bawling very often, and don’t hardly hear a moo out of them. Happy cows are usually quiet cows, and robotic barns make for very quiet cows.”

tives, such as the FARM program and the Veterinary Feed Directive, back nearly every dairy purchase at the grocery store.

“I think that these programs certainly help gain consumer confidence,” says Tasha Bunting, assistant director of commodities and livestock programs for the Illinois Farm Bureau. “It’s maybe just a lack of knowledge that programs like that even exist.”

For example, stricter rules adopted last year in the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Veterinary Feed Directive program require all animal owners, including dairy farmers, to receive veterinary oversight to administer antibiotics considered medically important to humans. Even when prescribed, the antibiotics never enter the food system. Dairy farmers discard milk from cows under treatment to ensure no antibiotics enter the food system – ever. Since 2011, zero retail-ready milk products have tested positive for traces of antibiotics.

Meanwhile, 98 percent of all U.S. dairy farmers participate in the National Dairy FARM Program. Standing for “Farmers Assuring Responsible Management,” the FARM program demonstrates a farm’s commitment to high standards in the areas of animal care, environmental consciousness and antibiotic stewardship. The National Milk Producers Federation, which operates the program, says the initiative elevates the quality of farm management practices while delivering consumers safe, wholesome dairy products.

“These programs are great opportunities for farmers to learn more about new technology and practices that are changing to help improve their herd’s overall performance, as well as a better way to maintain health and production,” Bunting says. “It’s reassuring for consumers to know there are programs like this in place.”

Green County Sheriff’s Report All charges reported here are merely accusations from initial law enforcement reports. In incidents involving an arrest or citation, a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

The following incidents were reported to have taken place: Friday, June 15: Warrant Arrest At 6:59 PM deputies stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation on County Highway Y at State Highway 81, Town of Monroe. Investigation resulted in a passenger in the vehicle, Zachary T. Blumenberg, 32, of Kampsville, Ill., being arrested on two warrants that were issued by the Green County Sheriff’s

Office. Blumenberg was jailed pending a court appearance.

Thursday, June 14 Probation, Parole Arrest At 10:59 p.m., deputies arrested Ryan M. Richardson, 34 of Brodhead, at a residence in the N4200 block of Park Road, Decatur Township, after a hold was placed on him by the Wisconsin Department of Corrections – Probation and Parole. Ryan was transported to the Green County Jail where he was turned over to jail staff without incident.

Wednesday, June 13 Motor Vehicle Crash At 7:47 a.m. deputies along with Monroe Fire Department, and Monroe EMS responded to the interchange of

State Highway 81 (westbound) at State Highway 69 (south) for a motor vehicle crash. Investigation found that Shaun P. Cox, 35, of Monroe, was eastbound on 81, heading into the city of Monroe when he collided with a vehicle operated by Roger A. Sutter, 58, of Monroe.

Roger stated he was making a left turn after crossing over the bridge onto 11 (westbound) when Cox’ vehicle hit him. Both vehicles were towed from the scene after sustaining functional damage. Both vehicles also had airbag deployment. Both drivers indicated that they were wearing seatbelts. An ambulance transported Shaun for non-life threatening injuries stemming from the crash. Roger was issued a citation for

inattentive driving and released with a court date.

Probation, Parole Arrest: At 11:09 a.m., Deputies arrested Chad E. Pehl, 44, of Monroe, at the Probation/Parole Office in Monroe after a hold was placed on him by the Wisconsin Department of Corrections – Probation and Parole. Chad was transported to the Green County Jail where he was turned over to jail staff without incident.

Motor Vehicle Crash At 6:25 p.m. deputies responded to a two-vehicle crash on State Highway 10004 north of State Highway 11 in the Town of Decatur. Investigation revealed a dump truck operated by William C. Day, 38, of Brodhead, was

southbound on 104 when a passenger car in front of him abruptly slowed and turned into a driveway. This caused Day to brake heavily. A vehicle operated by Gleason K. Weichelt, 35, of Brodhead, was traveling southbound behind Day. Weichelt observed Day braking and attempted to take evasive action. Weichelt collided with the rear of Day’s dump truck. Weichelt was not injured; his seatbelt was used and the airbag did not deploy. His vehicle sustained moderate damage and was driven from the scene. Day was not injured; his seatbelt was used and the airbag did not deploy.

The dump truck did not sustain damage and was driven from the scene. No citations were issued.

3. The board of review may not hear an objection to the amount or valuation of property unless, at least 48 hours before the board’s first scheduled meeting, the objector provides to the board’s clerk written or oral notice of an intent to file an objection, except that upon a showing of good cause and the submission of a written objection, the board shall waive that requirement during the first 2 hours of the board’s first scheduled meeting, and the board may waive that requirement up to the end of the 5th day of the session or up to the end of the final day of the session if the session is less than 5 days with proof of extraordinary circumstances for failure to meet the 48-hour notice requirement and failure to appear before the board of review during the first 2 hours of the first scheduled meeting.

4. Objections to the amount or valuation of property shall first be made in writing and filed with the clerk of the board of review within the first 2 hours of the board’s first scheduled meeting, except that, upon evidence of extraordinary circumstances, the board may waive that requirement up to the end of the 5th day of the session or up to the end of the final day of the session if the session is less than 5 days. The board may require objections to the amount or valuation of property to be submitted on forms approved by the Department of Revenue, and the board shall require that any forms include stated valuations of the property in question. Persons who own land and improvements to that land may object to the aggregate valuation of that land and improvements to that land, but no person who owns land and improvements to that land may object only to the valuation of that land or only to the valuation of improvements to that land. No person may be allowed in any action or proceedings to question the amount or valuation of property unless the written objection has been filed and that person in good faith presented evidence to the board in support of the objections and made full disclosure before the board, under oath, of all of that person’s property liable to assessment in the district and the value of that property. The requirement that objections be in writing may be waived by express action of the board.

5. When appearing before the board of review, the objecting person shall specify in writing the person’s estimate of the value of the land and of the improvements that are the subject of the person’s objection and specify the information that the person used to arrive at that estimate.

6. No person may appear before the board of review, testify to the board by telephone, or object to a valuation if that valuation was made by the assessor or the objector using the income method of valuation, unless no later than 7 days before the first meeting of the board of review the person supplies the assessor with all the information about income and expenses, as specified in the assessor’s manual under s. 73.03 (2a), Wis. stats., that the assessor requests. The Town of Jefferson has an ordinance for the confidentiality of information about income and expenses that is provided to the assessor under this paragraph that provides exceptions for persons using information in the

discharge of duties imposed by law or the duties of their officer or by order of a court. The information that is provided under this paragraph, unless a court determines before the first meeting of the board of review that it is inaccurate, is not subject to the right of inspection and copying under s. 19.35 (1), Wis. Stats.

7. The board shall hear upon oath, by telephone, all ill or disabled persons who present to the board a letter from a physician, surgeon, or osteopath that confirms their illness or disability. No other persons may testify by telephone unless the Board, in its discretion, has determined to grant a property owner’s or their representative’s request to testify under oath by telephone or written statement.

8. No person may appear before the board of review, testify to the board by telephone, or contest the amount of any assessment unless, at least 48 hours before the first meeting of the board, or at least 48 hours before the objection is heard if the objection is allowed under s.70.47 (3) (a), Wis. stats., that person provides to the clerk of the board of review notice as to whether the person will ask for the removal of a member of the board of review and, if so, which member, and provides a reasonable estimate of the length of time the hearing will take.

State Farmers Union still accepting campers at Lake Wissota this summer The first Farmers Union Camp session of the summer kicked off this week at Wisconsin Farmers Union’s Kamp Kenwood. Each summer, hundreds of rural and urban youth from all over Wisconsin and beyond participate in Farmers Union Camps at this historic camp on the shores of Lake Wissota near Chippewa Falls.

When asked about his favorite activity at the camp this week, first-time camper Leo couldn’t decide. “All of it – I liked every single thing!” he exclaimed.

Beyond traditional camp activities like hiking and swimming, campers who participate in Farmers Union Camps develop awareness of cooperation, leadership, rural heritage and citizenship, said WFU Education Di-

rector Cathy Statz.

“Our camp programs are designed so there is something for everyone,” Statz said. “For over 80 years they have focused on leadership development and citizenship with a cooperative approach.” Campers at each session create their own Camp Co-op Store, elect a board of directors, buy shares and receive patronage dividends at the end of each camp.

A balance of workshops, speakers, hands-on activities and creative play keeps campers busy. Each afternoon offers free time for a swim in the lake, a game of sand volleyball or other supervised recreational activities.

Campers have time for sports and games or hiking in the woods. Art, music, and drama teams meet each

afternoon to prepare for the Evening Program, which features skits, songs and cooperative adventure theme games. Past themes have included Pirate Night, Highland Games Night and Pioneer Night. Each evening closes with a dance (folk or modern) or a campfire.

“Campers especially love the evening programs at camp, because they get to be really imaginative,” Statz said. “They develop skits, write songs and paint a stage backdrop for our special theme nights. We also play a lot of fun camp games where kids can apply the teamwork skills they learn throughout the week.”

Campers come from across the Midwest and a handful of other states.

camper Ali Slaughter, who spent the past few summers on camp staff, said “Through Farmers Union Camp you gain a sense of community and family, knowledge on a wide range of important issues, leadership skills, and countless memories.”

Camp sessions are open to ages 8-18 and are organized by elementary, junior high and senior high age groups. Sessions are available through August. There will also be an Acorn Day Camp for ages 7 and up from 9am to 2pm on Aug. 16, coinciding with Wisconsin Farmers Union’s Summer Conference at the camp. Family camps, open for families to experience with children of all ages, will be held July 27-28 or Aug 3-4.

Co-sponsored by a grant from the CHS Foundation, these four- to five-day camps are affordably priced at $95 to $105 per camper for Wisconsin Farmers Union members.

(Non-members add $30 for a oneyear Farmers Union family membership.) Programming recognizes the values of cooperative values and particularly agricultural co-ops across the landscape.

“Agricultural cooperatives are such an important part of our rural economy, and our camp program uses them as the primary example of how people can build a better economy and engage in leadership,” Statz said.

Gary graduated from Brodhead High School in 1961. He had farmed most of his life and also worked for Knight Manufacturing, Brodhead, from 1977 until retiring in 2007. His hobbies were antique tractors, woodworking, fishing, bowling, motorcycle riding, and picking corn in the fall. He especially enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife Pauline; a son, David (Lindsey) Schupbach, Brodhead; three daughters,

Dr. Lance Satthoff will present “Taverns, Trinkets, and Tidbits; History of Monroe’s Taverns and Bars” at the Green County Genealogical Society’s July 7 meeting.

The meeting starts at 10 a.m. in the second floor meeting room of the Monroe Public Library at 925 16th Ave. Light refreshments are available 15 minutes before the meeting.

Green County Genealogical Society (located in the lower level of the Monroe Public Library) is available to the public for research.

Research Center hours are: Tuesdays and third Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and first Saturday after the meeting from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday summer hours June through September at the Research Center are 1 to 4 p.m.

Main holdings are on Green County. Both Rock and Lafayette counties are well represented, as well as several other counties, states, countries, and ethnic groups.

A large clipping collection of births, marriages and obituaries is available. Volunteers are on staff to help with your research.
