June meeting of the Monticello Area Historical Society The Monticello Area Historical Society (MAHS) will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 27 in the Zwingli UCC Lounge, 416 E. Lake Ave., Monticello.

Following a short business meeting, Doug Buehl will trace the history of the Woolen Mill, based on his research that is captured in his recent book, A History of the Monticello Woolen Mill.

The Monticello Woolen Mill was in many respects typical of the small rural water-powered mills that dotted the countryside in 19th Century America. However, during the 84 years of its existence, the Monticello Mill achieved a reach that far exceeded its modest presence on the Little Sugar River. Monticello blankets attained a deserved reputation for their high quality and workmanship, and the mill developed a clientele that extended far beyond the confines of Wisconsin. While one after another small mill fell prey to economic forces and modern competition, the Monticello Woolen Mill persevered for decades into the 20th Century, eventually becoming the last water-powered mill in Green County.

This is a free presentation and will start about 7:15 p.m. Books will be available for purchase. Come join us; the Public is welcome to attend both activities.

Green County Board June meeting summary

The Green County Board met for the June 2019 meeting on Tuesday, June 11. The Board approved two resolutions and one ordinance during the meeting. Three annual reports were presented, from Pleasant View Nursing Home, the Human Services Department, and the Health Department. The first resolution, 6-1-19 - NG911 Updates requests the state to allocate funds to the counties to begin upgrades for Next Generation 911 updates. There is a fund that was set up to help counties begin 911 upgrades but the counties have not been receiving those funds; instead, those

funds have been deposited in the state general fund and never been used for their intended purpose. Green County is asking for those funds to be allocated as they were originally intended.

The second resolution, Resolution 6-2-19 - Fund Transfer to Accounting was a request to transfer $50,000 from the undesignated general fund to the Accounting Department to cover the overlap training of a new Finance Director. Our current Finance Director will be retiring, and this amount will cover the increase in Accounting’s budget while our outgoing Finance Director trains the incoming Finance Director.

Ordinance 19-0601 - Additions to

County Personnel Policies is a continuation of changes being made to the County Code in relation to Personnel and County Employees. If you recall, the Board passed some changes last month regarding fraternization policies. This month, the changes are regarding Authorities of Administration and Department Heads. The Ordinance and its changes, as well as the resolutions passed at this meeting, can be found on the Green County website at www. co.green.wi.gov.

It was uplifting to hear the presentations and read the annual reports from the Human Services and Health Departments, and Pleasant View

Nursing Home. We have excellent people and resources here in Green County, highlighted by all of the innovative, unique and successful programs through the aforementioned departments. The services provided, and the dedication of the staff really puts Green County on the map. It is clear that the quality of life we enjoy here is due in large part to the genuine care and motivation of our staff in the county. Thank you to all of them!

The next County Board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, July 9 at 7:00 pm in the County Board Room, second floor of the Historic Courthouse in Monroe, on the square. The agenda will be posted the prior week on

the website but will include elections of a new First Vice Chair and possible Second Vice Chair of the Board.

Our current First Vice Chair is retiring and moving out of the district.

By state statutes, we are required to have a First Vice Chair, and so will be electing a replacement.

The company responded with a patch for its 1.5 billion users – but only by updating the app would your device and account be protected. Download and install software updates for operating systems, antivirus packages, and apps.

Follow these tips to help your children make smart cyber choices over the summer break: Restrict access to age-appropriate content by using parental controls on devices and web browsers. Specific kid-friendly search engines can limit results to sites that are safe for kids.

Consider locking devices with a password so children can’t download or buy apps without your approval.

Talk to your kids about what they are doing online. Which games, social networking sites, and other online activities are your kids into?

Are you comfortable with them?

Research apps and websites and try them out yourself.

Teach your children what NOT to click. Clicking links in unexpected texts or pop-up windows could infect a device with malware and raise the family’s identity theft risk.

Establish rules for downloading.

Teach kids to be wary of online offers for “free stuff” – these pitches are likely either malware transmission ploys or phishing traps set to steal their personal information.

Talk to your kids about the need for privacy. Make sure they understand not to share personally identifiable information (PII), especially

Village of Orfordville regular board meeting minutes CALL TO ORDER: President Gary Phillips called the meeting to order on Monday, June 10, at 7 p.m. Present were President Phillips, Tina Suiter Meyers, Beth Schmidt, Terry Gerber, Nikki Tuffree, and Jason Knox. Chuck Boyce arrived at 7:05 p.m. Also present were Mike Eggleston, Lori Mueller, Sarah Strunz, Joe Thompson, Chief Brian Raupp, Karl Stuvengen, Nick Todd, and Clerk Sherri Waege.

AGENDA VERIFICATION: Clerk Waege verified that on June 4, 2019, copies of the agenda were delivered to the President and Trustees: and posted at the Village Hall, Library, and the Farmers &Merchant’s Bank. There were no additions made to the agenda.

President Phillips explained that there has not been any response yet. Eggleston asked if there were plans for the Village owned land at the end of E. Church Street. President Phillips explained that there are no plans at this time; however, there is potential for a cul de sac at that location. * Carol Luezinger of 305 Olson Drive was present regarding the condition of Olson Drive. Carol Luezinger explained that there is gravel everywhere and that the pot holes are dangerous for kids on their bikes. * Greg Luezinger of 305 Olson Drive was present and explained that he has taken many 55 gallon garbage cans of gravel down to the waste site from the street. Greg Luezinger explained that he should not have to do that as he is retired and has a back problem. Greg Luezinger asked why the Village did not repair Olson Drive a few years ago when streets were paved in the Village. President Philips explained that Olson Drive was in too bad of shape to be sealed, and that the Village can continue to put cold patch on the street for now. * Carol Luezinger explained that she would like the curb at Judy Lechelts put back in. Carol Luezinger explained that there is a gully from the water runoff from the field and felt that the curb would slow the water runoff down. * Greg Luezinger suggested the Village Board members come up to their street to see it.

* Carol Luezinger asked what the ordinance is regarding brush pick up. President Phillips explained that there is no ordinance and that it is a convenience that the Village offers. Carol Luezinger asked why the neighbors entire tree was picked up, when everyone else has can only put out a handful of brush. Carol Luezinger asked where the consistency was in brush pick up. Nick Todd, the new Public Works Director, offered to meet with the Luezingers after the meeting for further discussion. * Carol Luezinger asked where the cleanup was along the lot lines in the Village. Carol Luezinger explained that she has rats in her neighborhood due to the neighbors junk in their yard. Carol Luezinger further explained that she complained to Clerk Waege about it and that nothing was done. Clerk Waege explained that she did pass on the concern; however, she does not leave the village hall to handle a rat issue. Carol Luezinger added that she has had to purchase many buckets of rat poison due to the neighbors junk in the yard.

NEW BUSINESS: Pay Request 14 for the Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrades. Joe Thompson from Town & Country Engineering was present to explain Pay Request 14. Thompson further explained that they had a problem at the plant because a fuse blew which stopped the pumps. Part of the plant was flooded and the situation is being looked into. Thompson also explained that the septic receiving tank is not as in good as shape as was thought. Nick Todd explained that he would like to research if there is a use for a new tank before the village invests any money.

Motion by Gerber, seconded by Schmidt to approve Pay Request 14 for $97,082.28. Motion carried. * Change Orders for the Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrades.

Thompson explained that there were no change orders. No action taken. * Work Directives for the Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrades.

Thompson explained that the gas detection equipment was not included in the contractors bid. Motion by Tuffree, seconded by Knox to approve the Work Directive for the gas detection equipment for $3,087.00. Chief Raupp explained that he can get six hurdles to designate an area for the second alcohol service area. The hurdles will have signs explaining that alcohol can only be consumed in the designated area. President Phillips explained that they will have to have a licensed operator there to oversee the serving.

Clerk Waege advised Eggleston of who the four licensed operators are from last year. Clerk Waege further explained that other licensed operators in the village can oversee the second service area. Motion

Mueller explained that there will be two different groups arriving at different times. The second event is on September 14th. Mueller explained the event is a motorcycle group that is doing a fundraiser for the Madison V.A. that will include live music, food and raffles. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a brother, James Tearman and sister, Claudia Nenneman.

Pauline belonged to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Brodhead, and was a Sunday School teacher. She enjoyed baking, jigsaw puzzles, bowling, card club, and chatting with friends and family on the phone.

She is survived by a son, David (Lindsey) Schupbach, Brodhead; three daughters, Teresa (Mike) Gerlach, Warren, IL, Jodi (Jim) Williams, Brodhead, Andrea (Timothy) Zach, Albany, WI; seven grandchildren, Danielle Schupbach, Derrick (Courtney) Schupbach, Trent (Mariah) Gerlach, Taylor Gerlach, Zachary and Alex Schliem, Sam Zach; five great-grandchildren, Mathew, Tyson, Wyatt, Phillip, and Audrianna; sisters, Judith Ann Erickson, Brodhead, Barbara (Roger) Zurfluh, Monticello, WI, Mary (David) Myhre, Madison, WI, JoAnn Kraus, Evansville, WI; and a brother, Lawrence (Leanne) Kundert, Australia. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter-in-law, Sharon Schupbach, and a step grandson, Darcy Larse.

A visitation was held on Thursday, June 13, 2019 at the NewcomerSilverthorn Chapel on the Hill, 3008 S Coon Island Road, Orfordville.

Funeral services were held on Friday, June 14, at the funeral home.

Private family burial will be Saturday in Greenwood Cemetery, Brodhead, Wisconsin.

ROSE MARIE SCHNEIDER Rose Marie Schneider, age 87, formerly of Brodhead, passed away on Saturday, June 15, 2019, at St. Elizabeth Manor, Footville, WI. She was born on Feb. 1, 1932 in Mobridge, SD, the daughter of John and Alice (Thompson) Tearman. She married Marvin Schneider.

Rose was always a cheerful person. She was very close to her brothers and sister. Everyone she met always enjoyed her company.

She did many crafts. One of her favorite traditions was making an Easter tree and putting eggs on it.

Rose also loved the color blue. She painted her house blue and most of her clothes were blue. In her youth, she enjoyed rides in the country to look for deer. She also enjoyed bowling and cooking for her family.

She had worked at a nursing home in Brodhead as a caregiver, and had many fond memories and stories of the elderly that were in her care.

Please be advised of the following requirements to appear before the Board of Review and procedural requirements if appearing before the Board.

No person shall be allowed to appear before the Board of Review to testify to the Board by telephone or to contest the amount of any assessment of real or personal property if the person has refused a reasonable written request by certified mail of the Assessor to enter onto property to conduct an exterior view such property being assessed .

After the first meeting of the Board of Review and before the Board’s final adjournment, no person who is scheduled to appear before the Board of Review may contact or provide information to a member of the Board about the person’s objection except at a session of the Board.

The Board of Review may not hear an objection to the amount or valuation of property unless, at least 48 hours before the Board’s first scheduled meeting, the objector provides to the Board’s clerk written or oral notice of an intent to file an objection, except that upon a showing of good cause and the submission of a written objection, the board shall waive that requirement during the first 2 hours of the Board’s first scheduled meeting,

and the Board may waive that requirement up to the end of the 5th day of the session or up to the end of the final day of the session if the session is less than 5 days with proof of extraordinary circumstances for failure to meet the 48-hour notice requirement and failure to appear before the Board of Review during the first 2 hours of the first scheduled meeting.

Objections to the amount of valuation of property shall first be made in writing and filed with the clerk of the Board of Review within the first 2 hours of the Board’s first scheduled meeting, except that, upon evidence of extraordinary circumstances, the Board may waive that requirement up to the end of the 5th day of the session or up to the end of the final day of the session if the session is less than 5 days. The Board may require objections to the amount or valuation of property to be submitted on forms approved by the Department of Revenue, and the Board shall require that any forms include stated valuations of the property in question. Persons who own land and improvements to that land may object to the aggregate valuation of that land and improvements to that land, but no person who owns land and improvements to that land may object only to the valuation of that land or only to the valuation of improvements to that land. No person may be allowed in any action or proceedings to question the amount or valuation of property unless the written objection has been filed and that person in good faith presented evidence to the board in support of the objections and made full disclosure before the Board, under oath, of all of that person’s property liable to assessment in the district and the value of that property. The requirement that objections be in writing may be waived by express action of the Board.

When appearing before the Board of Review, the objecting person shall specify in writing the person’s estimate of the value of the land and of the improvements that are subject of the person’s objection and specify the information that the person used to arrive at that estimate.

No person may appear before the Board of Review, testify to the Board by telephone or object to a valuation if that valuation was made by the Assessor or the Objector using the income method of valuation, unless the person supplies the Assessor with all of the information about income and expenses, as specified in the Assessor’s manual under Sec. 73.03(2a), Wis. Stats, that the Assessor requests. The Town of Albany has an ordinance for the confidentiality of information about income and expenses that is provided to the assessor under this paragraph that provides exceptions for persons using information in the discharge of duties imposed by law or the duties of their officer or by order of the court. The information that is provided under this paragraph, unless a court determined that it is inaccurate, is not subject to the right of inspection and coping under Wisconsin State Statutes 19.35(1), Wis. stats.

The Board shall hear upon oath, by telephone, all ill or disabled persons who present to the Board a letter from a physician, surgeon or osteopath that confirms their illness or disability. No other persons may testify by telephone unless the Board, in its discretion, has determined to grant a property owner’s or their representative’s request to testify under oath by telephone or written statement.

No person may appear before the Board of Review, testify to the Board by telephone, or contest the amount of any assessment unless, at least 48 hours before the first meeting of the Board, or at least 48 hours before the objection is heard if the objection is allowed under s.70.47(3)(a), Wis. Stats., that person provides to the clerk of the Board of Review notice as to whether the person will ask for the removal of a member of the Board of Review and, if so, which member, and provides a reasonable

INFORMATION REPORTS The Administrative Team presented information reports.

Technology Director Kevin Buxton wanted to thank Dave Novy, Lisa Semrow, and all staff involved with the Summer School Program. Their effort to offer a wide range of options for students is greatly appreciated.

Albrecht Elementary School Principal Dave Novy gave a shout out to Suzanne Calhoon for all of the help she gave organizing the Earth Week activities. She organized the readers for morning announcements and set up the assembly.

Middle School Principal Lisa Semrow recognized Annette Smith for organizing the Science Fair and all of the extra work she does for the Middle School. Dr. Semrow also thanked Stephanie Tresemer for organizing the recent Youth Service Day. High School Principal Jim Matthys thanked Linda Dean and Jen Flory for all of their help during the recent testing session. He further thanked Jim Andrews for all of his efforts setting up for events at the High School.

Superintendent Lenny Lueck extended a congratulations to Dave Novy for his excellent work and clean audit of the CLC program. The Department of Public Instruction just notified the District there were no directives for corrective action in DPI’s audit. This is fairly unheard of from a DPI audit.

Mr. Lueck also thanked Glen Watrud for covering the Middle School whenever one of the custodians is absent. Glen has never said no when asked and is always around extra to set up for events.

Mr. Lueck and Principal Novy also thanked Paul Roemer for all of his dedication and hard work with the arboretum and organizing events for the 50th anniversary of the arboretum.

Mr. Lueck also presented Board Member Abbey Wellemeyer with a Certificate of Commendation for her years of service on the Board of Education. This will be Ms. Wellemeyer’s last Board meeting.

Next Generation 4-H Club celebrates Earth Day On May 11, the Next Generation 4-H Club of Juda finished their second part of their Earth Day commitment by partnering up with Wisconsin DNR and the Friends of Cadiz Springs State Park Organization in cleaning up, making repairs and painting the park area of Cadiz Springs State Park in Browntown,WI. This has been the 4th year that the club has helped out these two organizations. Over 50 people came together that day to achieve everything on the list to make sure that the park was ready for its first visitors.

The club combines the roadside cleaning up done in April, with the park’s cleanup in May to complete its yearly Earth Day pledge to save our planet.
