all year.” “The first time, I struck out, so the second time, I was like, ‘I have to put the ball in play,’ Jordan said. “We weren’t hitting right off the bat so we really needed someone to step

up and Sara definitely stepped up with the first nine Cardinals in order with that huge two-out RBI hit. Once she five strikeouts. made that hit, everyone was like, ‘We Pacelli had a golden scoring opporcan do this,’” Burkhalter said. tunity in the top of the fourth. Juda-Albany drew first blood in the championship with a run in the bottom of the third. Goecks, who had a monster state tournament, ripped a triple into right field with one out. Coach Davis decided to put on the safety squeeze with Burkhalter, but the Cardinals made the defensive play. Nagorski quickly pounced on the bunt and held Goecks at third before firing to first to get Burkhalter. Jordan then delivered her biggest two-out RBI base hit of the year as she lined a shot into centerfield to plate Goecks. “People don’t realize she kind of cut her swing down at times and put it in play a little bit more,” Davis said. “Last year, her power numbers were a little bit better, but this year, her average was a lot better and she had a lot more RBIs. She made that adjustment this year and was a clutch hitter for us

The 2017 Juda-Albany softball season will go down in the history books as the greatest; the Panthers won the Division 4 State championship last Saturday afternoon at Goodman Diamond. The one-seed Panthers (27-2 overall, 14-1 Six Rivers) beat two-seed Pacelli 2-1 in a thriller that went down to the final out. “It hasn’t sunk in yet, but it sure sounds amazing when you say it. It’s something that I don’t know will ever sink in, but what a job these kids did,” coach Bill Davis said. “They had their backs against the wall many times defensively and came up with plays and came out with the championship. That’s awesome.” “It’s still surreal for me. It’s unbelievable that we came out here and we made our goal,” an emotional senior Sayde McDermott said. “This is now icing on the cake, so I’m out of words for this.” “It sounds so unreal right now. I’m still in that shocked phase,” senior Chelsea Burkhalter said. “It is such an amazing feeling to be a part of school history. Becoming state champs is so unbelievable.” “It hasn’t sunk in yet. It’s so surreal. I was bawling on the field because I was so happy,” senior Alexis Goecks said. “It’s been four years in the making, and I’m so glad that we got to come back and redeem ourselves.” “It’s a dream come true. It’s the best thing ever,” senior Sara Jordan said. “It’s amazing -- the fact that we did it. It’s a huge accomplishment for our school and our community.” “It’s amazing. This is certainly the best feeling of the season. Our program has really grown over the past few years with all of our talented players,” senior Riley Adkins said. “We have an amazing coach. The fact that we were able to win a state championship is just incredible.” Juda-Albany generated a scoring threat in the bottom of the first. Goecks was plunked with a pitch to open the frame. Burkhalter laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Goecks into scoring position. Pacelli starter Brook Nagorski then delivered some nasty pitches to strike out Jordan and McDermott swinging. The Panthers chased several rise balls in the early innings.
