Many local events planned for June Pride Month
In recognition of Pride month this June, several local organizations have planned a variety of events in Rock County to celebrate. From an LGBTQ+ comedy show to a day with games and food in the park for the entire family, the events run throughout the month of June.
“Pride month is a way to celebrate the unique and amazing people in the LGBTQ+ community. What began as protests against the mistreatment of the LGBTQ+ community in 1969 in New York City has flourished into a celebration of inclusivity, equality, and acceptance,” said Stephanie Hormig, LGBTQ+ Survivor Advocate for Family Services of Southern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois, Inc. “By embracing diversity and fostering a sense of belonging, Pride events not only empower individuals but also inspire social change. We firmly believe that everyone deserves to live their truth authentically, and the Pride events aim to create a more inclusive and accepting society for all.”

Kris Corwin, Distinguished Alumni of the Year: Kris Cor-
en (Frank) Schultz
Janesville, and a brother, Clinton Zettle Jr. of Brooklyn.
Dwight has six grandchildren, Aaron (Sarah) Arnsmeier, Alyssa (Jeremy) Davis, Steven (Adrienne) Zettle, Cale Zettle (Carly Benway), Max Bruegger and Gretchen Bruegger and five great-grandchildren, Madelynn Arnsmeier, Drake Davis, Brantley Davis, Ivan Arnsmeier and Wyatt Zettle.
Dwight dearly loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was so proud of all their accomplishments, from ballets, school musicals, sports events, as he and Rosella would attend as many as they could over the years or just sitting with the kids and listening to their stories. Dwight was a big man with a strong voice but his heart overflowed with love for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
win, the Trauma Program Coordinator at Mercyhealth Rock County, is the recipient of Blackhawk’s Distinguished Alumni Award, which honors an outstanding Blackhawk graduate who has demonstrated the value of a technical college education through career accomplishments, community service, continued personal and educational growth, and support of the technical college system.
Kris received an Associate’s Degree in Nursing from Blackhawk in 1991. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Viterbo University in La Crosse in 2004 and a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2006. She also holds multiple certifications, including Trauma Certified Registered Nurse, Certified Emergency Nurse and Certified Pediatric Emergency Nurse.
Kris had worked in the pediatric unit and the emergency department before becoming the Trauma Program Coordinator. Her career path as a nurse and her community involvement demonstrates how her Blackhawk education provided a foundation to not only succeed but also make a difference.
His family was his world, and if one or several stopped by would be the highlight of his day.
Dwight enjoyed driving his John Deere Gator about town, stopping to talk to friends along the way. He was a collector of farm toy equipment and tractors with emphasis on John Deere. He loved watching and feeding the birds and tending to his flowers and gardens. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clinton and Pearl Zettle; foster brother, Wayne Zettle; a brother, Ivan Zettle in infancy; a brother and sisterin-law, Delmar and Virginia Zettle and a granddaughter, Emma Pearl Bruegger.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the family in Dwight’s memory.

new recruits graduate from Blackhawk’s Law Enforcement Recruit Academy

Blackhawk Technical College held a special ceremony May 19 to recognize the efforts of 18 students who completed training through the college’s Law Enforcement Recruit Academy.
This was the 90th class to graduate from the academy, which provides the basic law enforcement training required to become a law enforcement officer in Wisconsin.
“Be prepared and willing to learn more. And this isn’t just at the beginning of your career – but your entire career,” Troy Egger, Academy Director, said to the graduates.
Riley Bendorf, class speaker, said the academy has created lasting friendships.
“I knew it would be and will be a lot of work to enter this field, and thankfully, I’ve had the support of my classmates along the way,” said Bendorf, who is a 2016 Parker High School graduate and earned his Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
Lt. Richard LeFeber, retired from the Beloit Police Department, received the Instructor of Excellence Award from the graduates, and Chief Deputy Craig Strouse of the Rock County Sheriff’s Office was the keynote speaker.
Three students also were recognized for four different awards of excellence:
• Academic Achievement Award: Dominic Ehrke, Wautoma Police Department
This award is given to the student with the highest achievement for each of the three end-of-phase tests. The class had a 90 percent average. Erhke had about 96 percent.
• Outstanding Physical Fitness Award: Riley Bendorf, Rock County Sheriff’s Office
To graduate, each student has to pass a physical readiness test. This award is given to the student who demonstrated outstanding physical fitness and also showed the most effort in the 32 hours of physical fitness throughout the past 18 weeks.
• Ryan Copeland Marksmanship Award Recipient: Kenneth Gigstead IV, City of Beloit Police Department
This award is named after Officer Ryan Copeland, a 2013 academy graduate who was killed in an on-duty traffic crash in 2015 and is given to a student who is ranked top in his class for marksmanship.
• Terry Fell Leadership Award: Riley Bendorf, Rock County Sheriff’s Office
