Panthers are regional champions By Derek Hoesly CORRESPONDENT
A delayed start and a brief power outage couldn’t stop the Panthers from claiming their third straight regional title last Friday. The one-seed Panthers (23-2 overall, 14-1 Six Rivers) beat four-seed Racine Lutheran 10-0 in five innings in a WIAA Division 4 regional final. “I’m proud of the girls, and it just shows the hard work that they put in and dedication to the program and dedication by the families,” coach Bill Davis said. “We had probably 10 to 12 people here working on the field to get this game off, and that just shows the love this community has for softball.” For a second straight playoff contest, Juda-Albany came out red-hot, scoring six runs that all came with two outs in the bottom of the first. Jordan blooped a base hit into centerfield, and McDermott hit a single into shallow centerfield. Junior Nicki Becker drilled a clutch single right back up the middle to plate Jordan. Junior Hailey Kammerer had a lengthy at-bat that resulted in a walk to load the bases. Junior Sammi Detra then lined a shot into right center to plate two runs to extend the lead to 3-0. Junior Haley Freitag laced an op-
posite-field RBI single into right field. After a double steal, Adkins delivered a two-run single into left field just over the glove of the leaping shortstop to balloon the lead to 6-0. “I told the girls we have to defend this house, and they really bought into that. They came out with a good approach up at the plate and got five, six hits in a row,” Davis said. “Riley’s really been coming around this year. Riley’s a girl I had for the last three years, but this year, she’s really putting it together. I’m so happy for her. She was a .260 hitter or .250 hitter last year, and she’s hitting .375 this year,” Davis “Everybody was on top of their game in the first inning. We were ready to go. We got a lot of runs in and shut Racine Lutheran down right away,” Adkins said. The Panthers tacked on a run in the top of the second. Burkhalter legged out an infield single and advanced 60 feet on a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt by Jordan. Becker torched the Crusaders again with another RBI base hit into centerfield. Panthers’ starter Becker was dialed in from the first pitch as she struck out five in the first two frames. Becker also got some help from her defense as Ad-
kins went up and snagged a line drive in the third. The Panthers’ hit parade continued in the bottom of the third. Freitag drilled a triple into right field. Leadoff hitter Goecks did damage as she got on top of a high Lydia Balke offering and hooked it into the right field corner for an RBI triple. Juda-Albany extended their lead to 9-0 on a passed ball in the bottom of the fourth. Juda-Albany sealed the regional title one inning later. Detra tattooed a ringing double off the centerfield fence to open the frame. Adkins legged out a slow roller to the shortstop to put runners on the corners with one out. Goecks then set off the celebration as
went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Freitag went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI. Detra went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Juda-Albany banged out 13 hits in the contest. “Bill has done a wonderful job coaching all the girls. I think the whole lineup can hit. I don’t think we have one weak link,” McDermott said. “We’re a team to be scared of because we can hit really well because of him.” “I say we go to the 1-0 mentality when it comes to tournament play. Coach Davis always stresses 1-0,” McDermott said. “We need to leave it all on the field. I think all the girls put their whole hearts and skills into it because we know we’re good.”

LSRWA launches the next leg of the ‘Sugar River Corps of Recovery’ expedition Explorers wanted!
Join ecologists, nature lovers, canoeists, and kayakers on Saturday, June 17, as they paddle and explore an eight-mile section of the Sugar River from Attica to Albany. This family-friendly expedition continues the journey members of Lower Sugar River Watershed Association initiated in 2015. Their goal is to paddle the entire length of the navigable channel of the Sugar River from its headwaters to its confluence with the Pecatonica River at Shirland, Ill., periodically mapping, photo-documenting, and gathering data about the flora and fauna and general condition and health of the stream channel and riparian corridor. This expedition provides an opportunity to observe and learn about the birds, plants, fish, and invertebrates that populate the habitats of the river corridor, as well as understand how the stream channel and riparian settings vary along the way. More importantly, this trip is simply a great way to enjoy being outdoors on the river with friends and family. Beginner to moderate paddling skills are recommended to navigate the river safely. Children must be accompanied by adults. Ecologists and naturalists will lead data collection activities; however, you do not have to be a skilled naturalist to participate.
she smoked the game-ending RBI base hit to deep left field. Becker earned the win, going five dominant frames and surrendering one hit, one walk, and zero earned runs while recording 10 strikeouts. “Nicki was hitting her inside spots and getting ahead of the hitters today. She’s got so many different pitches that she can throw at you, which keeps them guessing up there,” Davis said. “Nicki’s an amazing pitcher, and she helps our team so much. She’s a huge reason why we’ve made it three years in a row. She’s really a big part of our team,” Adkins said. Becker led the Panthers’ offense, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Adkins also
Data from the expedition will be shared on the LSRWA website and will help to document existing conditions to compare with data from future expeditions. Paddlers will gather at the boat landing in Attica at 9 a.m. to unload, shuttle cars, and prepare for launch by 10 a.m. The Attica boat landing is just east of the bridge over the Sugar River on County Road C. The trip is anticipated to take up to 4.5 hours to reach the take-out point at the boat launch in Albany. To preregister, contact Meredith Tripp by email at mgtripp@icloud. com. A registration fee of $15 per watercraft is required, with checks payable to LSRWA. A map of the route and other details will be provided at the time of registration. Participants will provide their own canoe or kayak, paddles, life jackets, snacks, water, sunscreen, and bug spray. The Lower Sugar River Watershed Association is a not-for-profit conservation organization based in Brodhead Wis., dedicated to the care and enjoyment of our water resources and to empowering citizens with experience and knowledge to steward land and water resources in the Lower Sugar River Watershed.
