Event champions women farmers
Celebrate
and experience ‘Soil Sisters Taste of Place’ at the Monroe Arts Center
Meet Wisconsin’s inspiring community of women farmers championing local food and family farms and celebrate the kick-off to summer at “Soil Sisters Taste of Place,” a new community event on Saturday, June 3 from 4 to 8 p.m. on the Monroe Arts Center front lawn.
A market with various educational and Green County area produced products along with music by Strings to Roam will highlight this free event.
“The Soil Sisters Taste of Place on June 3 showcases local family farms with a spotlight on the inspiring diversity of women leading these businesses,” explains Danielle Matson of Hidden
Garden Bakery in Monroe and co-chair of the event. “Soil Sisters is thrilled to be hosting this family-friendly, community celebration to connect you with this community of women committed to sustainability and organic agriculture and champion the inspiring array of locally-produced products in our region.”
Soil Sisters, a project of the non-profit Renewing the Countryside, started in Green County over fifteen years ago to bring together rural women to share knowledge, resources and expertise to collaboratively advocate for conservation, sustainability, local food and networking. Featured on Around the Farm Table along
with Midwest Living, Modern Farmer and a Top Rural Development Initiative Award winner, Soil Sisters brings the spotlight to the inspiring stories of Green County area women-owned family farms that produce food and fiber while stewarding the landscape. According to the 2017 Census of Agriculture, Women represent approximately 35 percent of farmers in Wisconsin, a 16 percent increase since 2012. Wisconsin has 1,455 organic farms, second in the country only to California.
“Come meet your farmers and learn about local, seasonal food and how we can all transform what’s on our plate,” explains Alicia Gasaway of Gasaway Gardens in Monticello and co-chair of Soil Sisters Taste of Place with Matson.
“When my family moved to our land in Green County from
the Twin Cities, I found the Soil Sisters community very welcoming and has been such a great resource for me of local knowledge as I develop my homestead. If you’re interested in anything from gardening year-round to powering up with renewable energy, there will be Soil Sisters at Taste of Place to also support you on your journey.”
A variety of market booths will have Soil Sisters providing knowledge as well as having various local products for sale, including meats from Riemer Family Farm in Brodhead, aronia berry products and artwork from Barham Gardens in Brodhead, canned goods from The Old Smith Place in Brodhead and many more local producers. Several educational booths will provide resources on everything from starting a cottage food
bakery business in your home kitchen to connecting with agricultural policy and advocacy with the South Central Chapter of the Wisconsin Farmers Union.
Come hungry as there will be food available for purchase including the popular Soil Sisters bake sale featuring a diversity of homemade cookies including gluten-free as well as cider from Brix Cider, a Mount Horeb cidery co-owned by Soil Sister, Marie Raboin. Music by Strings to Roam, led by Soil Sister Colleen Robinson, will be entertaining with
bluegrass tunes.
“Soil Sisters showcases the increasing role women farmers play in our rural areas, representing one of the fastest growing groups of new growers prioritizing small-scale, diversified, community-focused agriculture,” explains Heather Lynch of Green Haven Gardens and Master Gardener in Brooklyn, who will be available to answer gardening questions and have some of her homegrown plants for sale at her booth at Taste of Place. “I See farmerS, Page 12

Students, police enjoyed friendly kickball game
Beloit Fresh Start celebrates mentorship program to help kids
Students from Beloit Fresh Start, a program of Community Action, Inc. of Rock and Walworth Counties, enjoyed a friendly kickball competition with Beloit police officers on May 11 at ABC Supply Stadium in Beloit.
The match was part of a new partnership between the two organizations. Police officers started mentoring the Fresh Start youth earlier this year with regular dropins at the Community Action Training Center, including self defense classes, talks about healthy relationships and games of basketball.
“We’re making sure that the police department is involved with our kids, make sure they know who we are on a first name basis, on a last name basis,” said Beloit Police Chief Andre Sayles.
“We need to be champions of our kids, because one day they’re going to be leaders
of this community,” he said. The students say their interactions with the officers helped break stereotypes they have of police. Police
say they also learned a lot from the youth.
The students won the kickball game 4-3.

of their time is spent in an intensive individualized educational program to complete their high school education or GED, while the remainder of their time is spent in construction, community service, leadership

Edvest reminds families to save for higher education
In Wisconsin and throughout the country, National 529 Day is recognized on May 29 (5/29). This day serves to remind families about the importance of saving for a child, grandchild, or another loved one’s higher education while highlighting the value and flexibility of saving with a 529 college savings plan.
To celebrate, Edvest 529, Wisconsin’s direct-sold 529 college savings plan, is offering a special incentive to help families get started on their higher education savings journey with a bonus deposit incentive.
Individuals who open a new Edvest 529 account between May 22 and May 31, will be eligible for a $50 or $100 bonus incentive.
For a $50 bonus – open an account during the promotion with an initial deposit of $250 or more and set up recurring contributions totaling $50 or more per month until Nov. 30.
For a $100 bonus – open an account during the pro-
motion with an initial deposit of $500 or more and set up recurring contributions totaling $50 or more per month until Nov. 30.
For complete details about the bonus deposit incentive, including the Terms and Conditions, visit Edvest. com/529offer23.
“We’re encouraging all Wisconsinites to join us in celebrating National 529 Day by talking with their loved ones about saving for higher education and opening an account to start saving today,” said Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions Secretary-designee Cheryll Olson-Collins.
“The sooner students and families start saving for higher education, the more time their money has to grow, which could provide a stronger financial foundation down the road. Any dollar saved today can help reduce student loan debt tomorrow,” Olson-Collins added.
Funds saved with Edvest 529 can be used for edu-
cation and career training after high school, whether that’s through an accredited four-year university, two-year technical or community college, a certificate program, graduate school, or an apprenticeship program registered with the U.S. Department of Labor. Account owners can use their Edvest 529 savings to pay for qualified higher education expenses such as tuition, certain room and board expenses, fees, books, supplies, and equipment required for the enrollment and attendance of a student.
Edvest 529 is a tax-advantaged investment, meaning contributions to an account may qualify for a Wisconsin state income tax deduction of up to $3,860 annually per beneficiary, per year (married couples filing separately and divorced parents may claim a maximum of $1,930). Plus, account earnings grow tax-deferred, and withdrawals are tax-free at the state and federal level
when used to pay for qualified higher education expenses.
An account can be opened with $25 in about 15 minutes. The plan has no sales charges, enrollment fees, or annual account maintenance fees. In fact, Edvest 529 is the sixth lowest-cost 529 college savings plan in the nation.
To learn more about saving with Edvest 529, visit Edvest.com or follow them on Facebook and Instagram.
About
Edvest 529
For more than 25 years, Edvest 529 – Wisconsin’s
direct-sold 529 college savings plan – has been helping families save for higher education expenses. Account owners can choose from 24 investment portfolios, access to easy-to-use savings tools, and take advantage of in-state tax benefits for Wisconsin taxpayers.
To learn more about Wisconsin’s Edvest 529 College Savings Plan, its investment objectives, risks, charges and expenses please see the Plan Description at Edvest. com. Read it carefully. Investments in the plan are neither insured nor guaranteed and there is the risk of
investment loss. Check with your home state to learn if it offers tax or other benefits such as financial aid, scholarship funds, or protection from creditors for investing in its own 529 plan. If the funds aren’t used for qualified higher education expenses, a federal 10% penalty tax on earnings (as well as federal and state income taxes) may apply. Consult your legal or tax professional for tax advice.

Seniors can receive vouchers for local farmers’ markets
What is the Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program? Eligible seniors receive vouchers worth $35 to purchase locally grown produce at approved farmers’ markets and roadside stands.
Who is eligible? Rock County residents age 60 or older, and Native Americans 55 or older in Rock County, are eligible who have a monthly household income which is not more than $2,248 for one person or $3,041 for two people, etc. Each eligible person may receive vouchers only once in 2023.
How do seniors get these vouchers? Vouchers will be distributed at multiple locations.
There are a limited number of vouchers available; distributions are on a first come,
first served basis. How can seniors get vouchers if they can’t get to a distribution place?
First option is for those who are unable to get to a distribution and would like someone else to pick up vouchers for them, they must call the ADRC Nutrition Program at 608-7575428 at least one week in advance of the distribution to request a Proxy Authorization Form. This is the only document which will permit someone else to receive vouchers on behalf of an eligible senior. The form must be signed by the voucher recipient, then taken by the authorized representative to a distribution. Limit of 4 proxy forms per representative. If distributions have already been completed, call 608-757-5428for voucher
availability and options.
The second option is that beginning July 3, any remaining vouchers will be distributed on a first come, first served basis.
Call 608-757-5428 for availability and options; leave a voicemail.
