Parkview Elementary hosts Fine Arts Night

Parkview Elementary School (PES) held a Fine Arts Night on Monday, April 24. The event featured an art display in the gym with work by all of the PES students. There was also a silent auction with one collaborative piece by each grade, as well as three bowls made with teachers’ hands (cut from clay and decorated by the teachers). Additionally, forensics students gave their speeches in classrooms for those who wished to hear them. Music students performed Karaoke, and band students performed some optional performances in the music/band room.

Albany, WI • Memorial Day Weekend

The Class of 1967-We Remember Our Nine Angels Scholarship winners for 2017 are Sara Jordan and Matthew Schmitt. The Honors Program was held at Juda High School on May 17 when each received a $900 award.

The Nine Angels Scholarship was established in 2010 by the surviving classmates of the nine young ladies who perished while on their senior class trip so that they are never forgotten. The scholarship is designed to be perpetual.

The nine angels for whom this scholarship is named are Sheila Babler, Sandra Goecks, Linda Hartwig, Joyce Kaderly, Linda Moe, Janice Siedschlag, Nancy Siegenthaler, Nelva Smith, and Doreen Williams. The nine girls died when a Douglas DC-8 on a training flight at the New Orleans International Airport crashed into the Hilton Hotel where the girls were staying while on their senior class trip on March 30, 1967.

Rock Energy announces 2017 scholarship winners

ATV to be raffled off in Evansville The Evansville Chamber of Commerce is selling raffle tickets for a 2017 Polaris ATV with a two-year warranty, along with smaller cash prizes. The tickets are $20 each or six for $100.

There are still several garden plots available to rent for the 2017 season.

The 3.5+ acre Rock County Community Garden is located off of Highway 14 in Janesville. Annual plots are approximately 20’x25’ and cost $35 for one and $60 for two. The garden is open now and closes on Oct. 31.

Parkview eighth-graders ‘Moving Up’

Rock Energy Cooperative is pleased to announce its 2017 scholarship winners.

The recipients are Colleen Toberman, a senior at Parkview Bobby Wolter High School, and Bobby Wolter, who is graduating from Brodhead High School.

Each will receive $500 to assist with educational expenses at an Colleen Toberman accredited college or technical school.

The co-op awards 10 scholarships each year to graduating seniors living in its service territory. Since 1989, Rock Energy has awarded more than $97,000 in financial aid. Funds for the scholarships come from unclaimed capital credits.

Juda-Albany now 21-2

The Panthers (21-2 overall, 14-1 Six Rivers) closed out the regular season with a convincing 13-1 victory over the Highland Cardinals in a Six Rivers crossover matchup last Thursday.

Juda-Albany jumped on Highland for a run in the top of the first. Senior Chelsea Burkhalter drew a five-pitch walk with one out. Senior Sayde McDermott clubbed a clutch two-out RBI double to put the Panthers up 1-0.

Junior Haley Freitag added a two-run base hit in the top of the second to extend the lead to 3-0.

Juda-Albany put the game away with three runs in the top of the fourth to take a commanding 7-0 lead. Junior Sammi Detra launched a solo home run to open the frame.

McDermott’s monster game continued as she tattooed a two-run double. The Panthers tacked on four runs in the top of the seventh to go up 13-0. Senior Alexis Goecks laced a two-run single during the four-run outburst.

Goecks led the Panthers’ offensive charge, going 3-for5, with one run scored and two RBIs. McDermott went 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Detra went 2-for4 with three runs scored and one RBI. Juda-Albany pounded out 11 hits in the contest.

Genealogical Society hosting Glarner Genealogy Roadshow The Green County Genealogical Society is hosting a Glarner Genealogy Roadshow in June. Bob Elmer will be there to help those with ancestors from the Canton of Glarus, Switzerland, discover more about their families. He writes the Family History Notes newsletter about Glarner families.

The event will be held Thursday, June 1, from 10 a.m. to noon in the GCGS Research Center located in

the lower level of the Monroe Public Library.

Also available for public research use will be the society’s Swiss and local resources. Staff will also be on hand to help with any genealogical research or question.

JUDA CROSS COUNTRY CELEBRATES 25 YEARS

Juda is celebrating its 25th year participating in cross country. A celebration will be held at Coach Klar’s house on June 10 starting at 10 a.m. The run will start at 10:30. MS STEAM COMPETITION WINNERS

The Middle School STEAM Competition was held on Wednesday, May 17. The sixth-graders had to see how far their car could go in 30 seconds. Liana Daniels and Bethany Woodward were the sixth-grade winners. Seventh graders built and launched their own individual rockets. Eighth-graders used Lego MindStorms and had to push someone else’s robot out of their hexagonal boundary. They also had to design a logo for their robot for use as a tiebreaker. Eighth-grade winners were Jordan Lerch and Joselyn Rufer.

ODYSSEY OF THE MIND

Liana Daniels, Vanessa Olmedo, Jerzie Lerch, Susan Farias, Kihana Schmid, Anna Skoumal, Hanna Swedlund, Macey Hutchison, Katie Nusbaum, Jozy Anderson, Miah Roth, Libby Jordan, Gunnar Riebe, and Colin Anderson participated in Odyssey of the Mind this school year.

SOFTBALL

On Monday, May 15, Juda-Albany beat Barneveld 10-0. Nicki Becker struck out 10 and walked none.

Goecks had a team-high four RBIs, Sara Jordan went 3-for-4 with three RBI’s, and Becker went 2-for-4. The Panthers also became Conference Champions for the third straight year that night.

BASEBALL

On Friday, May 12, the Cardinals defeated the Clinton Cougars by a score of 2-1. Skyler Stuckey went five innings and struck out three and walked two to get the win. Matt Schmitt and Skyler Stuckey combined for three hits for the Cardinals.

On Tuesday, May 16, the Cardinals lost to conference champion Beloit Turner by a score of 8-1. Matt Schmitt went four innings and gave up three earned runs and took the loss.

The Preschool Graduation will be held on Tuesday, May 30, at 9:30 a.m. This will be held in the Palace Gym.

There will be a Mt. Olympus trip

on Tuesday, June 20. The cost is $10, which includes admission fee, lunch, and transportation. Please sign up in the office by May 31 to reserve your spot. This year’s horticulture class has been growing plants in the Juda School’s greenhouse. Thank you to all who purchased from this sale.

ART DEPARTMENT

On Wednesday, May 17, the art department unveiled this year’s senior mural. This year the senior class quote is “Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” The mural featured a darkened forest setting with a ray of light coming from the top of the scene illuminating the quote in black lettering.

FORENSICS

The Juda forensics team would like to thank JFAB for providing cookies and drinks at the Forensics Showcase last Wednesday evening.

SUMMER DRIVING SCHOOL

MJM Hill Driving School will be offering Driver’s Education this summer. Classes will be held on June 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, and 15 from 9 to 11 a.m.

The class will be a mix of instructor-led lessons, online lessons, and a behind-the-wheel program. Instructors will include Kelly Hill, Loren Homb, Deputy Pam Tourdot, and Amy Kundert. There is also an online version of the class available to students if they cannot make it to regular classes. The fee is $310 for all three parts of the program and is the same price for the online version of classes.

ITALY TRIP

Mr. Diedrich, English teacher from Albany high school, will be hosting a summer trip to Italy. The tentative date of the trip is June 11, 2018. Students will have the opportunity to travel to Florence; to Rome to tour the Coliseum, the Roman Way, Vatican City, the Sistine Chapel, and the Trevi Fountain; to Pompeii; and will take a boat cruise around the island of Capri. The trip is open to all Albany, Monticello, and Juda students currently in grades 8 through 11. Current seniors are also eligible to travel with the discounted student rates even though they will have graduated. If interested, contact Mr. Diedrich.

The last day of school is fast approaching! Release time for students on Friday, June 2, the last day of school this year, is 12:29.

On Thursday, May 25, breakfast will be pancake wraps; lunch will be scalloped potatoes and ham, peas, and blueberries.

Green County Board Updates the county government. It is responsible for establishing policy, not the day-to-day operation of the county, and focusing on the long-term.

Policy is enacted by adopting plans, budgets, ordinances, and resolutions, and the majority of the policy formation work takes place in committees before being presented to the entire board. It is encouraged for residents to attend committee meetings because many committees will hold hearings and consider public input before making recommendations to the full board. And, just like the board, a committee has collective authority.

The annual budget is considered one of the most important policy documents the county board adopts.

It is the document that determines which services are provided, the level of funding, and the source of revenue. I wrote about the budget and budgeting process this past fall when the budget was being prepared.

Approving ordinances and resolutions is another way the board establishes policy. Ordinances become a permanent part of the governmen-

What exactly does the County Board do? That is a question I hear quite a bit both now and when I was knocking on doors during my campaign last year. It’s a good question, and one many people have.

In Wisconsin, county government’s main function is to act as the administrative arm of state government. Towns and villages have what is known as constitutional home rule authority, which basically allows them to undertake anything that is not expressly prohibited by state statute or the constitution; counties do not. Counties can only act as the Wisconsin Constitution and Chapter 59 of the Wisconsin State Statutes allow. Counties have limited authority and carry out certain critical functions of state government.

“A county board in Wisconsin is considered a legislative body that sets policy. Its members, county board supervisors, serve in a legislative and visionary role. The authority is collective versus individual. No operational control resides with individual county board supervisors, but the board is responsible for holding the persons appointed to operate county

“In sum, the basic function of a county board is to (1) adopt policy; and (2) hold those persons responsible for implementing policy accountable according to established criteria.” Somehow, it’s not as simple as it sounds.

In my opinion, one of the most important functions of the county board is to “involve, represent, and be accountable to the public.” I represent District 24, the Town of Albany. Juda-Albany girls win third straight conference championship

The Juda-Albany (20-2 overall, 13-1 Six Rivers) softball team won an unprecedented third straight Six Rivers eastern division crown, beating Barneveld 10-0 in six innings last Monday.

“I was talking to the girls beforehand,” coach Bill Davis said. “Sometimes, you take them for granted when you win a couple in a row. You never know when it’s going to come around again, so enjoy it, and tomorrow night we’ll get back to work again. It’s a great feeling and a great accomplishment for the kids. It shows the hard work they put in this year.”

“It’s kind of insane for Juda-Albany to do something like being Six Rivers champs three straight years. It’s a pretty nice accomplishment,” senior Alexis Goecks said.

“It’s a big accomplishment. It was one of our goals, so the fact that we got the conference title -- it’s pretty awesome,” senior Chelsea Burkhalter said.

“The conference title -- it’s awesome.

This title means as a team, we really worked hard this season, and it’s cool to see what we can accomplish. I mean, it’s my third straight conference title, so it’s pretty cool as a senior,” senior Sara Jordan said.

“The conference title to me means the team worked hard and put all their heart into it. The title means the world, and winning it with the team in my senior year means a lot to me,” senior Sayde McDermott said.

“It’s pretty cool because it’s our third year in a row. It shows that our group of seniors really started our program and we got it going so having three straight conference titles is really cool,” senior Riley Adkins said.

The Panthers took a 1-0 lead with a two-out rally in the bottom of the first.

Jordan ripped a base hit into left, and McDermott blooped a single into centerfield. Junior Nicki Becker followed with a soft base hit that fell in front of Barneveld second baseman Kyla Ihm, who was playing deep. On the play, Ihm forgot about Jordan as she rounded third base and Jordan raced home to give Juda-Albany the early lead.

“I just remember I could see that the girl at second was playing deep and had the ball but wasn’t really looking at me,” Jordan said. “I just kept taking a couple steps, and then I just heard, ‘Go, go!’ I just started running toward home; I don’t even think they threw it. We don’t really score in the first couple of innings, so I just wanted to get that first run on the board.”

Juda-Albany left the bases loaded in the bottom of the second. Junior Haley Freitag drew a base-on-balls to open the frame. Junior Sammi Detra put down a sacrifice bunt toward third that resulted in a throwing error by Jamie Kelly to put runners on first and second.

The small ball continued as Adkins laid down a well-placed sacrifice bunt to advance both runners into scoring position. Juda-Albany then tried to pull off a safety squeeze as Goecks put down

a bunt that Barneveld starter Grace Gordon fielded and threw home to cut down Freitag. After a base-on-balls, Gordon struck out Jordan swinging to strand the bases loaded.

Barneveld mounted a scoring threat in the top of the third. Leadoff hitter Ihm and Jessica Walker hammered consecutive singles to put runners on first and second. Becker struck out Kennedy Barsness looking to escape the jam.

Juda-Albany exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a commanding 6-0 lead. The bottom of the Panthers’ order started the five-run explosion. Freitag worked a five-pitch walk, and Detra laced a base hit into left field on a 3-2 pitch to open the inning.

“Haley Freitag actually has started a lot of our big innings. She’s really a solid hitter,” Adkins said. “She comes in clutch a lot, so the fact that the bottom of our order can get us going is huge.

Our one, two, and three hitters are really powerful hitters for us, so having people on base for them to get home was a big help.”

“With our batting order, I don’t think we have a weakness because the bottom of our order is the same as the top,” McDermott said. “We have Sammi, who has three homers, I believe -that’s huge. Haley coming up swinging for us getting on base was key. I think throughout our whole lineup, we’re really strong.”

Goecks pulled an RBI single into right field to put the Panthers up 2-0.

Senior Chelsea Burkhalter lined a tworun single right back up the middle to

extend the lead to 4-0. The hit parade continued as Jordan tattooed an RBI double down the left-field line to plate Burkhalter. A Barneveld error brought home the sixth run of the game.

“We all just started hitting the ball and made contact. Then the adrenaline started going and we just kept hitting really well,” Jordan said.

The Panthers tacked on three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Junior Maddie Roth drew a leadoff walk to spark the three-run outburst. Detra advanced Roth 60 feet on a sacrifice bunt. Juda-Albany’s relentless offensive pressure continued as Adkins put down a second straight bunt that resulted in a throwing error by Kelly to make the 7-0. With Adkins standing at third, Goecks hit a chopper to first and Brooklyn Hogan decided to go home with the throw but Adkins clearly beat the throw to push the lead to 8-0. Jordan’s strong day at the plate continued as she clubbed an RBI double into the left centerfield gap.

The Panthers ended the game two batters into the bottom of the sixth.

Becker drilled a base hit and advanced 60 feet on a wild pitch to open the frame. Junior Hailey Kammerer set off the celebration on a game-ending RBI base hit into left center.

Becker retired six out of the first seven batters she faced with four strikeouts.

Over the final four innings, Becker allowed at least one base runner in every inning but still put up zeros. Becker got the win, going six dominant frames and surrendering five hits, zero walks, and zero earned runs while recording 10

Entering 2017, coach Davis stressed

“We’re back to thinking game-by-game now. We want 1-0. We want to win this game tonight, not tomorrow’s game, not state.”

As a person who has fought for common sense gun laws ever since the Sandy Hook shooting massacre, I was disgusted when I heard about the permitless concealed carry bill that was introduced by Republicans a few weeks ago.

This bill would get rid of the training requirements and permit system currently in place in Wisconsin and spits in the face of common sense, simply to please the gun lobby.

Under the current law, Wisconsin’s K-12 school buildings and grounds are automatically gun-free. This bill would force schools wishing to prohibit guns to post signs at every entrance or access point to school grounds where guns are prohibited.

Any school that fails to follow these

requirements accurately would automatically be deemed to allow guns on the property. The bottom line is schools are a place for kids to learn in a safe environment, and adding guns to the mix is WRONG and dangerous; it puts kids at risk. The only people who should be allowed to carry a gun on school grounds are law enforcement, who have had extensive training. As the son of a teacher and brother of a sister currently enrolled at Monroe High School, my fear for their safety would go to another level if this bill becomes law.

checkpoint in an airport, and municipal, county, state, or federal courthouses. None of the previously listed areas make any sense to allow concealed carry, especially in courthouses. Courthouses already have trained, armed security personnel to protect citizens.

In the U.S., we tragically lose an average of 33,000 people every year to gun violence. That number doesn’t include all the people who were shot but survived and had their lives altered forever. Permitless carry takes Wisconsin in the wrong direction when it comes to common sense and puts Wisconsinites in further danger of gun violence.

I’m not going to stop working until common sense prevails on this critical issue. For example, 85% of Wisconsinites support universal background checks for all gun sales, and 91% of Wisconsinites – including 86% of gun owners – support the current law that requires Wisconsin residents to get a permit to carry a hidden, loaded gun in public. Lifting the training requirements and permit system for concealed carry is simply WRONG. I’m not against guns, but like the majority of my fellow Wisconsinites, I’m for common sense.

Please make your voices heard to stop this terrible bill. I’m writing to all Brodhead residents and surrounding communities, to reach out to your state assembly and state senate representatives and voice your disgust with permitless carry. This bill is extreme and is not what the people of Wisconsin are asking for.

The Luther Valley Historical Society Museum, located at 219 Janesville Street in Footville, will have an Open House on Sunday and Monday, May 28 and 29, from 1 to 4 p.m. Come see the progress we are making on restoring the building and view our Memorial Weekend display of an extensive collection of photographs and memorabilia from the 7th Photo Group of the 27th Photo Squadron of World War II, whose mission it was to “bring back photos of the target.”

The 27th Squadron completed over 1000 missions between 1943 and 1945 in France, Germany, and central Europe. The collection was donated to the museum by the family of Carl Wenzel (1911-1992) a photo-lab technician for the 27th Squadron.

GERALD R. GRAY Gerald R. Gray, 87, of Brodhead, passed away on Saturday, May 20, 2017, at his home. He was born on May 28, 1929, in Pekin, Ill., the son of Elvin and Ethel Mae (Potts) Gray. He married Betty Mae Van Tine on Sept. 14, 1954, in Ellisville, Ill. She passed away on Sept.

22, 2016.

Gerald was a U.S. Army Veteran, having served in Korea. He farmed near South Wayne, Wis., and Decatur Township. He also worked for Beloit Corp., retiring in 1992. Gerald was one of the founders of the Church of the Nazarene, Brodhead. He loved farming, yardwork, gardening, woodworking, mechanics, traveling, and being involved in church activities, but most important was his family.

He is survived by his children, Steven Gray, Monroe, Wis., Debra Gray, Canton, Ill., Phillip (Tera) Gray, Greg (Cathy) Gray, and Brian Gray, all of Brodhead, Jerry (Joell) Gray, Fruita, Colo.; three sisters, Eileen Wilson, Fairview, Ill., Linda (David) Clark, Washington, Ill., Carol (Todd) Montour, Surrey, Wis.; three brothers, Harry (Connie), Galesburg, Ill., Arthur, Evansville, Wis., Clifford (Carolyn), Noel, MO; fifteen grandchildren; twenty-six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, great-grandchild, Elijah, daughter-inlaw, Barb Gray, two brothers, Earl and Charles, and a sister in infancy, Geraldine.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, May 25, 2017, at the Church of the Nazarene, Brodhead, Wis., with Rev. Kenneth Lawson officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Brodhead, Wis., with military rites. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

The D.L. Newcomer Funeral Home, Brodhead, Wis., is assisting the family.

LUCILLE SCHWARTZLOW

On May 18, 2017, Lucille Evelyn Schwartzlow, passed away peacefully at Woods Crossing in Brodhead, Wisconsin. She was 97 years of age. Lucille was born to Irene (Leuenberger) and Jacob Rhyner, Jr. on Nov. 16, 1919.

She was their only child and was proud of having grown up on the family farm on Decatur Road and continuing to live on that same road for all but two years of her life.

After graduating from Brodhead High School, Lucille married George James Schwartzlow on Sept. 21, 1940.

She and George became true partners in life, first on their farm and later in their fertilizer business. It wasn’t all work, though. They spent many Saturday nights on local dance floors.

She even fondly recalled that during a trip to Mexico, other couples cleared the floor to watch her and George dance.

In 1975, they bought a home at the corner of Decatur Road and County E. From then until her health prompted her to stop in 2015, this fiercely independent and private woman could be seen mowing and maintaining the large lawn to a meticulous condition.

Lucille was the definition of a family matriarch. Having raised her sons, Ron, Keith, and Steve, she became a part of her grandchildren’s lives in the very best way. Visits from the great-grandchildren brought her much joy in her later years.

After George passed away, Lucille began going to see her cousin Bonnie in Tucson, Ariz. Any trip had to be over by April 1, however, so she could get back to start lawn work! Collecting cookbooks and trying new recipes also filled her days. For several years,
