Tensions high at Jefferson township meeting after ATV advisory referendum shot down

Brodhead Mayor Doug Pinnow spoke about the potential economic benefits, and suggested a one-year trial take effect.

Jefferson Township resident Bob Severson said he doubted some of the economic impact figures provided by the proposal’s backers, and said liability protections would not completely protect the township from lawsuits and legal fees.

“You’ve got a vehicle that is generally drab, low, noisy, does nothing for the economy, nothing for the ecology, does nothing for the environment, (and) they’re hard to see,” said Severson.

During his remarks, Severson questioned how many people at the meeting were from Jefferson, and less than half raised their hands.

Green County ATV Club President said Clarno township nor the city of Monroe have had issues with ATVs on their roads. Whitehead said 31 Wisconsin counties allow road routes for ATVs. “If the case was they’re noisy and there are liability issues, do you think these townships would put themselves in jeopardy?” he asked.

Town Chair Harvey Mandel’s announcement that the issue “dies here tonight,” drew the ire of dozens of supporters who were at the meeting.

Mandel originally called for four speakers to discuss the matter, but at least a dozen people got up to speak about the proposal.

Later in the meeting, Mandel addressed that concern directly, and said the board decided a threshold of 66 percent would have to be met to approve the trails.

“That didn’t happen,” Mandel said.

Mandel said of the 665 registered voters in the township, 165 voted for the measure, while 150 voted against.

“That’s 500 people that are either voting no or are saying ‘I’m not ready to vote yes,’” said Mandel.

“Safe or unsafe, they’re not designed for the road,” said Jefferson town board member Rick Nusbaum.

“I’m not completely opposed to this thing, but it would have to be done

very right.”

“There’s not going to be a vote tonight,” Nusbaum said.

Dusty Kubly asked the town board whether they would map out a preferred route for the ATV trail from Clarno to Spring Grove. “At this point, unless (the two other board members) wanted to do something different, what I said – it ended as far as I was concerned,” Mandel said. “As of right now, this issue is over.”

At that, nearly 40 people left the meeting, and the board moved on to other business.

Mayor Pinnow said at a public hearing last November, the majority of the attendees were in favor of the trails.

“It was frustrating they won’t consider

even a trial period to see if it works,” he said. “I always assumed majority rules.”

Whitehead said his group has been pursuing the idea for 13 years. “We kept going to the meetings, and they kept shutting us down, so we said, ‘Let’s get it on a referendum.’”

Mandel suggested a litany of other ways - motorcycle, bicycle, automobile or horse and buggy – for residents to travel between Brodhead and Monroe.

Mandel acknowledged that the ATV has been “coming after me,” in recent weeks, but said he has received more positive calls from constituents than at any other time in his tenure. “So it is nice to know that people care,” he said.

Next Generation 4-H celebrates Earth Day with highway cleanup On Earth Day, events are held worldwide to increase awareness and appreciation of the Earth’s natural environment. The Next Generation 4-H members took the opportunity to participate in an event that coincides with the clubs core values and Earth Day. On April 22, over 40 club members honored Earth Day by cleaning

a span of Highway 11/81 located just east of Juda. The group collected 22 bags of trash from along both sides of the one-mile stretch that is assigned to them by the WI-DOT. This is the fourth year that the club has been cleaning the highway as part of this environmental awareness day widely celebrated across the globe.

Another Albany school improvement referendum?

On April 16, 2018 a community meeting was held at the Albany School to present a school improvement plan to the community.

The plan includes capital improvements and additional construction projects to the current school building. The intent of the meeting was to inform the public that a new referendum would be needed to complete this project.

The specific cost of the referendum was not revealed, but it was alluded to be in excess of 5.3 million dollars (possibly as much as $10.5M).

Those presenting information were from Bray Architects, JP Cullen, and Baird Public Finance. Proposal drawings and a study were already completed in preparation for this meeting.

The project plans include improving the security of the building by moving the district administrator’s office to be near the main entrance. Also included were classroom improvements such as new carpeting, cabinetry, ceiling tiles, science lab facilities, and sinks for the elementary classrooms. Some facility updates were also recommended for ADA access. There is also a proposal for the addition of air conditioning to the school, demolishing or renovating the original 1922 school building, and adding new parking lots by razing the home that is currently on school property, across the street from the school.

It was proposed that the current cafeteria and kitchen be turned into a weight room, and a new cafeteria and kitchen be built. The new cafeteria would also serve as a community center. This new addition would be built in the parking lot space just outside of the current gymnasium entrance doors – in fact it would cover up the gymnasium entrance that was just built in 2010, and was part of the 2009 referendum. The plan also called for a new technical education addition to be built. The new addition would have two overhead garage doors for auto mechanics access.

New playground equipment is also proposed. Since the fifth-grade was recently re-assigned to the elementary school from the middle school, the plan would move the fifth-grade classroom to be near the other elementary classrooms.

New signage would be added to the building to help visitors find their way through the building.

There are also roof and mechanical / plumbing / electrical system upgrades that would be included in this project. A new roof, mechanical upgrades, and the gymnasium entry doors were previously done as part of the 2009 $2M referendum. All of the items that are part of this new project were identified as “improvements” - there were no items that were identified as being required, or “must have” at this time.

Albany has had a series of referendums over the last few years.

The exact amounts and details of the referendums are available on the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) website. Albany has had referendums in 1995, 2003, 2005, 2009, 2012, 2016. Each of those referendums passed. The 2016 referendum was for $800,000 for operating expenses. In addition, it has a recurring portion to cover operating expenses that adds $200,000 every year with no end date. It was explained at the meeting that the 2009, 2012 and 2016 referendums would be paid off in 2019, and taxes would then drop.

It was stated that taxes would drop $156 per $100,000 in 2019 if no additional debt was added.

The Albany School website still has a link to the 2016 referendum information sheet that was distributed to residents to promote the 2016 referendum. That information sheet also clearly states that if the 2016 referendum passed (which

it did), no new referendum would be needed in 2019-20. The big question is why are we now talking about a new referendum in 2018 or 2019?

The justification given by the financial advisor from Baird at the community meeting indicated that they don’t want our taxes to go down. Instead of allowing taxes to go down $156 when the existing referendum was paid off as agreed to, we could just keep taxes the same or maybe add $100 to the taxes on a $100,000 property. That money would then justify a new $5.3 million dollar referendum.

It was presented that spending this money (whether needed or not) would have little impact on taxes.

According to the people that are eager to spend taxpayer money, this is like free money. It is much easier for them to take it from us now when it doesn’t “cost” us as much, then to let taxes drop and have to come back in a few years to ask for more. This is a completely irresponsible way to spend other people’s money.

While the updates to the school building would be a nice improvement to the school, there are some significant problems at the school that actually do need to be addressed. In the Feb 2018 Albany School District Newsletter, a required legal notice from the Superintendent was included (available on the School District’s website).

The legal notice stated that the elementary, middle, and high school were all performing below expectations per the DPI Accountability Report Card. It was a required notice that informed all families that there are open enrollment options available for their children.

This report card scores the performance of each school in the state on a variety of factors in determining the grade. The most current overall district grade (2016-2017) was 58.7%. This score falls into the category of being “below expectations”. Not only was Albany’s score “below expectations”, it was in fact the 5th worst score for any school district in the entire state.

This was not a fluke. In 2015-2016, Albany’s grade was 54.1% - which earned Albany a score that was the 6th worst in the state.

In addition to the poor DPI scores, the school district has seen the number of students leave the school through open enrollment increase every year for the last 7 years. Per the DPI website information, in the year 2016-2017, the district had a net loss of 95 students that went to other schools under open enrollment. That left 341 students in the entire Albany School System – a loss of nearly 22% of our students. In each of the previous years, the net loss of students was 86, 75, 69, 53, 52, 40.

This trend should be concerning to everyone in the community. It was stated in the meeting that administration believes that enrollment numbers will remain constant over the next few years. The trend of open enrollment does not support that belief. What the open enrollment issue means for the school district is decreases in state funding. This year, Albany loses $6748 in funding for each student that transfers to another school. If that student is a special education student, the amount is $12000.

Using the $6748 number, 95 students leaving our school equates to a loss of $641,060 in state funding every year. Over the last five years, the district has lost $2,492,859 in state funding due to the loss of students through open enrollment to our neighboring schools (the state funding rate varies slightly each year).

While it can be argued that there are many reasons that students choose to enroll in other school districts, it is hard to attract students and their families to one of the worst performing schools in the entire state. It also makes it hard to keep the students that live here from transferring to our neighboring schools, or to prevent them from deciding that home schooling is a better alternative. The consistent increase in the number of students open enrolling out of the district is alarming, and it is not good

into the schools and careers the students want after high school.

In recent years, the school has been without a technical education teacher, and students were deprived of technical education courses in the school. If additional money is going to be spent on this school, it needs to be focused on improving the quality of education and preparation for life after high school.

The argument could be made that students perform better in a better environment and nicer facility.

I think we are beyond that. The DPI scores show that Albany is not just struggling, it is in fact one of the poorest performing schools in the entire state. We cannot be blind to that. Add in the 22% loss of students to open enrollment, the inability to attract and retain the school staff, and the problems with administration, and it becomes very apparent that the school is in a poor position to move forward. It is hard to imagine they are now asking for millions of dollars for non-essential improvements.

When this subject was brought up at the meeting, it was made very clear that there is no plan for any of this referendum money to be used to address any of these problems.

It was stated that this money was only for capital improvements.

The previous referendum information sheet distributed in 2016 stated that the goals of the 2016 referendum were to “1. Maintain a high quality school in Albany. 2.

Attract and retain highly skilled staff. 3. Ensure career and college ready graduates. 4. Preserve the heart of our community.” The school took our tax money and

for the longevity of the school.

In addition to students leaving the school, there are significant numbers of employees leaving the school. By my own count, there were 68 total employees in the Albany School District in 2017. This includes teachers, administrators, and support staff. In the 5 school years 2012-2017 (by my own count) 71 employees had left the school.

They left for a variety of reasons including retirement, termination, “non-renewal”, and resignation. A school simply cannot be successful when there is an average turnover of employees of 20% each year for five straight years.

This turnover also includes many changes in administration over that same time period. In 2016 the Albany Superintendent’s contract was not renewed. He had been the Superintendent since 2004. A new Superintendent was then hired starting in the 2016-2017 school year.

Now that Superintendent is leaving the school, and the search is on for a replacement for her. There have also been several Principal changes in the last few years. One of our Principals left for another school.

Another one was hired, and then left shortly after that. The school needs high quality leadership to get back on track.

While it seems to be an easy sell when telling the taxpayers and community members that we need a shiny new paint job on the school – especially when it won’t add “much” to the tax bill, we really need to look at the real issues this school is facing. Our students are not being well prepared for college and careers.

SOFTBALL Monday was an exciting night at the Juda Community Park for the Juda-Albany Panthers. They were losing 0-6 in the 5th inning due to nervous errors. That did not stop the Panthers. They battled back with an 8 run 6th inning and came back to win 10-7. Juda Senior Hailey Kammerer went 3-4, and Albany Senior Samantha Detra went 2-4 with a solo home run. It was a very exciting game, and the team did not give up. Tuesday night the Panthers played Pecatonica. They took an 8-0 lead in the 2nd inning, and they scored another 5 runs in the 4th inning. Albany’s Hailey Freitag and Juda’s Nicki Becker each had two doubles, and Freitag had 3 RBI’s and Becker had 2. Brianna Crull and Trinity Elmer from Juda also had a good night. Becker pitched 4 innings, striking out 8, and then handed the ball to sophomore Emily Makos to finish the game.

On Wednesday, April 24, the varsity track team ran in the meet at East Troy. Nicole Kamholtz placed third in the 4x400 relay, and Taylor Adkins placed third in the 4x200 relay, seventh in the 4x100 relay and in the long jump. The next track meet will be a freshmen-only meet on Tuesday, May 1, at Clinton.

The next meet for all grades will be held on Friday, May 4, at Beloit.

BASEBALL Last Friday, April 20, the boys fought their way to victory for the first time, 5-3, against East Troy. Everyone had productive at-bats including Jacob Miller and Almanzo Friedly. However, the winning feeling was cut short when the boys hosted Edgerton on April 24. Edgerton pounded the ball steadily every inning leading to their 12-1 victory. Luke Skoumal, Quinton Kammerer, and Almanzo Friedly all had a single. The boys traveled to Edgerton, East Troy, Monroe for a double header, and Jefferson on April 26, 27, 28, and May 1 respectively. They will host Jefferson tomorrow. Games start at 4:45 p.m.

BRODHEAD-JUDA CHEERLEADING Tryouts for the Brodhead-Juda cheerleading squad will be held on Thursday, May 17, from 3:30 to 5:00 at Brodhead High School. Practices for tryouts will be held on Monday, May 14, Tuesday, May 15, and Wednesday, May 16. You must be in high school or entering high school in the fall of 2018 to be eligible.

PROM Prom will be held on Saturday, May 5. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m.

The dance will go until 11 p.m., and Post Prom will begin at 12 a.m. and go until 3:30 a.m. The cost is $6 for couples, $4 for singles, and $1 for spectators. If you’re bringing a date from a different school, do not forget to stop by the office and fill out a permission slip! At Post Prom there will be laser tag, food, an inflated obstacle course, a hypnotist, sumo wrestling, and board games.

JUDA HILL CLIMB Up and coming is this year’s Juda Hill Climb, which is being organized

by Spanish Club. It will be held on Saturday, May 19. The Kids Fun Run will begin at 9 a.m., and the 5k Run/2k Walk will begin at 9:30 a.m.

SPANISH CLUB This year, the Spanish Club will be organizing the Juda Hill Climb. Registration cost is $25 before the race and $30 at the race. Registration will also guarantee a t-shirt.

SENIOR TRIP On Wednesday, April 25, the seniors traveled to Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg. They spent the day shopping and “hanging out” together as a class.

MUSIC DEPARTMENT The middle school band and choir members attended Large Group Festival at Albany on Wednesday, April 25. The band and choir both received at 1 from the judges! Great job to all participating members.

Congratulations to all members who participated in State Solo and Ensemble this past Saturday. Students who performed at State included Zoe Rathsack, Trent Anderson, Marilyn Farias, Luke Skoumal, Lydia Bouc, and Emily Makos.

The Spring Band Concert for 5-12 grade band members is Wednesday, May 2. The concert will start at 7 p.m. The Spring Choir Concert will be held the following week on Wednesday, May 9.

MATH DEPARTMENT Mr. Anderson’s calculus class is winding down with the AP test coming up. The class is mainly focusing on doing old AP test problems in class to prepare for the test. Mr. Anderson says that after the AP test, the class will be focusing on how to do their own federal taxes.

FAMILY STEAM NIGHT Family STEAM night was held on Wednesday, April 25. Elementary students were able to construct projects with snap circuits to learn about motion. It was a huge success.

ART DEPARTMENT Last week the kindergarten class worked with watercolors, and the first graders made backgrounds for their cat projects. The second graders created superheroes, and the third graders glazed their pottery. The fourth graders worked on their prints, and the fifth graders had a super fun art day. The sixth graders had a work day, and the high schoolers continued working on their collages.

SCIENCE FAIR The Elementary Science Fair was a great success. There were many different and creative experiments.

The students learned a lot from doing and seeing other classmates’ experiments. Thank you to all who came and supported this annual event.

APRIL PBIS On Monday the elementary students were rewarded for their good behavior. Students were called to the cafeteria around 2:15 p.m. and put into teams to go over the directions for the scavenger hunt. At 2:30 the teams were released to complete as much of the scavenger hunt as they could.

CHEESE DAYS PRINCE AND PRINCESS CONTEST The 2018 Green County Cheese Days Prince & Princess Contest will be held on June 2, 2018. To qualify, one must be 6 years old by Friday, September 14, 2018, and not older than 9 by Sunday, September 16, 2018, and must be a Green County resident. A parent or guardian also

must accompany the child to all events as well as provide transportation to and from all events. Judging will be held from 8 to 11 a.m., and the awards ceremony will be held at noon. failed to achieve at least the first three of these goals.

A promise was also made in 2016 that a new referendum would not be needed in 2019 if the community passed the 2016 referendum. We were told that if the 2016 referendum didn’t pass, the school would have to be shut down. I think the promises made to our students, taxpayers, and community members need to be kept.

Another community meeting is scheduled for May 15, 2018 in the Media Room near the library of the Albany School.

The meeting is scheduled to run from 6-8 p.m. There are also plans for a questionnaire that will be distributed in June to residents of the community asking for input on the new referendum. There is a big push to get this referendum on the ballot this fall. Let our school’s leaders know that real changes need to be made within the school. Let them know that the taxpayers, students, and parents aren’t going to accept just throwing money at a new façade over the old problems.

second Peace Corps service assignment in 40 years of life, the image appeared again. It came in night’s darkness out of a storm over the world’s problems gathering in my heart.

I tried in my mind to invent new words for JFK to quell this storm swirling round his now cartoon-like

image in the dark night of my soul.

Problems I hadn’t as a volunteer been able to resolve, volunteer projects I undertook that never felt completely finished, provoked the storm. Swirling round, and round, in my head in the darkness, they gathered dark momentum.

At sunset in Conakry, just days before returning from my second Peace Corps service in West Africa, I looked out over the Atlantic Ocean. I felt tides beckoning me past palm trees and rooftops crowding Guinea’s shoreline toward home outside Brodhead, Wis., 5026 miles away.

I felt suddenly no longer real my projects – with blacksmiths, welders, carpenters, market garden members, school children, teachers, World Food Programme staff – that had absorbed my time for 6 months.

Abruptly now, like my service in Senegal 40 years ago, my work and commitment in Guinea were evaporating into my past. Realities of home were coming quickly into view. Realities of my volunteer service were disappearing with Earth’s setting sun.

Days earlier at the site I served as a United Nations Field Officer with the WFP in Kissidougou, I got an email from a list serve that started triggering these strange, dark feelings. In the list service message, I saw a photograph that seemed more a caricature or cartoon across cyberspace.

For the first time in my memory, the face I first recognized more than 55 years ago wasn’t as I’d always recalled thereafter. On 1960s black and white television sets carrying the evening news, that face was real. It was when the nation’s second youngest president actually was alive.

schools and their families’ market gardens. Yet there are hundreds and hundreds more schools that have no market or school gardens across Guinea. Jobs are so few, income so thin, African people have to sell, rather than eat what fresh vegetables they are able to grow, then live mostly on rice they grow or buy with proceeds – till the money’s gone, and there is no food.

My wife Dela and I spent 23 years together learning everything we could by trial and error from Mother Nature. Yet we never had to face West Africa’s extremely depleted soil from seasonal downpours of rain on once tropical forest ground, now so vulnerable to harsh elements.

Unfinished tasks, innovations I attempted to introduce, swirled in among the widespread problems.

I didn’t finish the second seed nursery I spent a whole day building. After hiking three hours with Malinke and Kissi kids to find bamboo to construct it, I had limped home with a huge blister forming in leather shoes wet from fording a river.

More problems swirled into the dark winds. More problems I’d not anticipated, added to the food and farming problems I came back to West Africa to help address. These other issues loomed far more enormous now than I’d imagined, all seeming impossible to resolve.

BMS 8th graders learn what lies ahead at 8th annual Career Day

Brodhead Middle School hosted its annual Career Day on April 18 for eighth grade students.

The goal of the day was to expose students to a variety of careers and allow them the opportunity to ask questions of someone currently employed in a particular area. We had 25 presenters, gave their perspective on why they chose that particular career.

Students were able to learn a plethora of new careers, ranging from farming, carpentry, nursing, law enforcement, and many more.

The presenters discussed about certain skills and knowledge neces-

sary to be successful in their careers, the education and training involved in learning the skills, and discussing what high school courses or courses beyond high school were necessary for their success.

Presenters also explained the positives and negatives of their careers as well as common employment characteristics like promptness, communication and teamwork.

Each of the six presentations lasted 25 minutes.

“I was extremely impressed with the entire event,” said local author Robin Marsden. “(Shanahan) did an amazing job organizing it from start to finish, and the students were very respectful, polite, and helpful.”

nutrition. Innocent, sweet faces of Guinean children everywhere purchasing cigarettes for brothers, fathers, now mothers and girlfriends, too. Learning to waste money this way, burn money this way – instead of buying, planting, eating from seed; instead of feeding children.

Sweet, smiling Aunt Louise’s face came to me again in the dark. My family sent me her photograph electronically in an obituary following her death at age 94 a few weeks ago.

As I’d read it, I recalled dear Uncle Joe’s passing in his 50s back in 1976.

That news of his death reached me in a hand-written letter and airmail envelope that his brother, my father, sent by the postal service.

I received and read the letter about Uncle Joe’s death in Tambacounda, Senegal, during my first Peace Corps service. Poor Louise had laid him in a World War II veteran’s grave out in the fertile fields of Indiana by the school. She then went on another 42 years of life without him. Now during my second Peace Corps service in Guinea, she had died, too.

My mother told me seeing his brother Joe straining to breathe, gasping to breathe, one blackened lung cut out of him, the other crippled and struggling from an adult life of smoking – had shaken my father enough finally to quit smoking himself.

Yet my father didn’t change the rest of his unhealthful lifestyle – eating all the wrong things, exercising far too little, working in a hazardous chemical environment A form of cancer killed him at only 54.

Again, my mother Ruth lived on to age 86, so many, many years without the husband she loved.

I thought of the brevity of my second Peace Corps service. I thought of having to leave so much I love of African people to die from view, die from my helping purpose, a second time now in Guinea.

JFK admonished me in my youth to ask not what my country can do for me, but what I can do for my country. Still following his call decades since his death, his words twisted out of the storm in my heart.

Ask not “why” of the problems you cannot solve. Ask “how” solutions you can make happen.

Look not at the darkness you cannot heal. Look at the light you can bring to help heal.

From Peace Corps service I left in 1977, to Peace Corps service I began in 2017, two realities seem the only way out of personal storms from global problems.

If we want to be better able to solve big problems, we go out into the world to volunteer. If we want to make the world a better place, we go back home and live a better person because of all we’ve learned.

Objections to the amount or valuation of property shall first be made in writing and filed with the clerk of the board of review within the first 2 hours of the board’s first scheduled meeting, except that, upon evidence of extraordinary circumstances, the board may waive that requirement up to the end of the 5th day of the session or up to the end of the final day of the session if the session is less than 5 days. The board may require objections to the amount or valuation of property to be submitted on forms approved by the Department of Revenue, and the board shall require that any forms include stated valuations of the property in question. Persons who own land and improvements to that land may object to the aggregate valuation of that land and improvements to that land, but no person who owns land and improvements to that land may object only to the valuation of that land or only to the valuation of improvements to that land. No person may be allowed in any action or proceedings to question the amount or valuation of property unless the written objection has been filed and that person in good faith presented evidence to the board in support of the objections and made full disclosure before the board, under oath, of all of that person’s property liable to assessment in the district and the value of that property. The requirement that objections be in writing may be waived by express action of the board.

5. When appearing before the board of review, the objecting person shall specify in writing the person’s estimate of the value of the land and of the improvements that are the subject of the person’s objection and specify the information that the person used to arrive at that estimate.

The Town of Spring Grove has an ordinance for the confidentiality of information about income and expenses that is provided to the assessor under this paragraph that provides exceptions for persons using information in the discharge of duties imposed by law or the duties of their officer or by order of a court. Green Co. Clean Sweep Program in effect through Oct. 31 Green County will be offering another Clean Sweep Hazardous Materials Collection Program for county farmers and residents starting on May 1 and running through October 31, 2018. The Clean Sweep collection site is located at the Green County Landfill, W2002 County SS, Brodhead.

The Clean Sweep program is an opportunity to dispose of banned products or supplies damaged by moisture or contamination. This will be the 11th year that Green County has offered a Clean Sweep Collection Program. A total of over 115,000 pounds of hazardous material has been collected through the previous collections in Green County.

All Green County residents will be able to dispose of materials at the landfill during normal business hours from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays, and from 8 to 11:30 a.m. on the following designated Saturdays: May 5, June 2, July 7, August 4, and September 8.

Farmers will be able to dispose of up to 200 pounds and homeowners can dispose of up to 50 pounds of hazardous materials free of charge without pre-registering.

Farmers and homeowners wishing to dispose of more than these amounts need to pre-register by calling the Green County landfill at 8978605. All items should be properly identified and materials will only be accepted by authorized personnel during normal business hours.

Examples of hazardous items that will be accepted include: oven cleaners, spot removers and drain cleaners; Herbicides like Atrazine, Round-up,

Banvel, 2,4-D, Silvex, brush killers and many others; Insecticides including Diazinon, DDT, Chlordane, Thimet, Furadan, Sevin and others; Fungicides including Captan, lead, marine and auto paint, solvents, animal health products, mercury, degreasers, roofing tar, wood finishes, oil based paint and stains, hydraulic fluid, pool chemicals, old gasoline, paint strippers, and cadmium and lithium batteries.

Items that WILL NOT be accepted include, tires latex paint, firearms and ammunition, Freon 11 and 12 radioactive material, compressed gas cylinders, yard waste, antifreeze, waste motor oil, fluorescent tubes, recyclable materials or biological wastes.

Latex paint can be safely disposed of in the regular garbage as long as it is hardened. If you have small amounts of left over latex or oil based paint simply open the can and let it dry out in a well ventilated area.

Once it has hardened it can safely be put into the regular garbage. If you have large amounts of paint left over you can purchase a hardener at paint stores to put in the paint that will harden the entire amount. Another option is to line a box with a plastic bag, add kitty litter or other absorbent material, and then pour the paint over the material, let it dry and then place the bag into the regular garbage.

Obituaries CHRISTINE FABIAN Christine Rae Fabian, age 48 of Wrightstown, passed away early Friday, April 20, 2018 at her home surrounded by her loving family after a two-year battle with cancer. She was born on December 6, 1969 in Brodhead, Wisconsin to the late Stanley and Ruth (Kummer) Meyers. On June 6, 1992 she married Stefan Fabian in Sun Prairie. Christine worked as a high school teacher at John Edwards High School in Port Edwards, Principal at Merrill Middle School, in Oshkosh and most recently as Principal of Howe Elementary School in Green Bay. Christy enjoyed scrapbooking, going on walks and shopping for shoes. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially playing board games.

Christy is survived by her husband, Stefan, their children; Michaela, Trevor, Carson and Kamryn, siblings; Michael (Dawn) Meyers, Steve (Mary Jo) Meyers, Rick (Natalie) Meyers, Cindy (Glen) Boedecker and AFS sister, Leen (Marc) Geerkens-Cornil. She is further survived by her mother in law, Marian Fabian, sisters and brothers in law; Jodi (David) Wagner, Jeffrey Fabian,

Lisa (Craig) Fabian-Albert, Craig (Michele) Fabian, Tracy Siebers and Nicole (Arin) McClure as well as many nieces, nephews, great nephews, other relatives and friends.

Preceding her in death are her parents, her father in law, Howard Fabian and brother in law, Randall Fabian.

Family and friends gathered on Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at St. Clare Catholic Church St. Paul Site, 437 Main Street, Wrightstown from 4 to 7:30 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation began again on Thursday, April 26, 2018 from 9:30 until 11:15 a.m. at the church, and the mass followed at 11:30 a.m., with Rev. Brian Wideman officiating. Cotter Funeral Home and Crematory assisted the family.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the Doctors, Nurses and Staff of University Hospital and Clinics and the Carbone Cancer Center of Madison for the exceptional care given to Christy.

NICHOLAS QUINT Nicholas M. Quint, age 76, of Janesville, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, April 20, 2018, in Ben-

ton, IL. He was born in Monroe, WI on June 1, 1941, the son of Nicholas M. and Elizabeth (Galauner) Quint.

He married Jeane BriggsBump on October 24, 1986, in Janesville.

Nick was a master aircraft mechanic, receiving many citations during the course of his career. He started working as an aircraft mechanic for Roy True of True Aviation at the Rock County Airport and completing his career as the VP of Blackhawk Aircraft Maintenance, Inc., with his son Joe as the President and wife Jeane as the Secretary/Treasurer.

Nick was a member of the Elks Club and order of the Moose in Janesville. He was an accomplished accordianist, and enjoyed playing and entertaining. He especially loved restoring old planes.

He is survived by his wife Jeane, Janesville; his children, Debbie Stowers, Janesville, Michael (Lilian) Quint, Grays Lake, IL, Joseph (Kim) Quint, Janesville, Tammy (Craig) Endres, Lodi, WI, Shelby (Mark) Powers, Merrill,WI, Dwight (Joanne ) Bump III, Orfordville, William (Danae) Bump, Brodhead;
