Green County Board update

County board ponders ATV/UTV trails measure, land use update Have you seen the new Green County website? It is up and running and is extremely user-friendly. If you type in the old web address it will direct you to the new one, which is www.wi-greencounty.civicplus. com. There are more features on the new website which makes navigating the site and finding what you are looking for much easier. Please check it out.

County board news The Green County Board of Supervisors met Tuesday, May 11, at the usual time of 7 p.m. For those who attended either in-person or via Zoom, there was an update of the Water Trends Study that is now entering its third year. This is the study that the county is conducting over a span of five years to collect data from wells around the county to create a baseline for water quality trends. We will have more information and it will become more useful as the study continues.

There is a recording of the presentation, as well as the results thus far and other information, available on the Extension Green County website at www.green. extension.wisc.edu.

More money was returned to the General Fund than transferred out. A resolution for non-lapsing funds was passed as well.

A draft ordinance about the creation of all-terrain and utility-terrain vehicle trail crossings and routes on county trunk highways in Green County was distributed to the board. This ordinance is expected to be discussed by the board at the June meeting.

The ordinance addresses the creation and use of ATV/ UTV routes on county trunk highways in Green County.

you may have.

Ag land update The Land Use and Zoning Department is currently working to update approved ag land uses. It has been a few decades since it has been updated, and land uses have changed, including agritourism.

The zoning department and oversight committee are taking input from residents while updating the code.

The Land Use and Zoning Committee usually meets the second Monday of the month. You can find meeting and agenda information on the Green County website, as well as contact information for the department and oversight committee.

COVID-19 vaccines Have you received your COVID-19 vaccine yet? They are available throughout the county at the health department, clinics and pharmacies. If you have not received it yet, please consider doing so soon. The sooner we reach herd immunity, the sooner things can safely begin to resemble our old normal, and the sooner we can stop the spread of the virus and its variants. In the meantime, thank you for masking, washing hands and keeping 6 feet apart.

JOANN COLLINS ANDERSON Joann Collins Anderson, age 88, passed away at Monroe Hospital on May 8, 2021, from congestive heart failure.

She was born March 13, 1933, in Madison Wisconsin, to Clarence and Isabel Haakenson. She eloped and married her friend and love, Robert (Bob) “Sabu” Collins on Aug. 15, 1959.

Joann loved to have fun with people and loved life. She enjoyed golfing, bowling and dancing and loved Patsy Cline and Conway Twitty. She also shared her love of baking with her family, teaching those of us who cared to learn how to make the best piecrust ever. But most of all she loved to go to all of her children’s and grandchildren’s baseball games, basketball games, dance recitals and school holiday plays. She was an avid Badgers and Packers fan.

For many years Joann worked at the Green County Bank, where she met her lifelong friend, Carol Badertscher. In 1971 she

was hired at Janesville Products, later known as Woodbridge, as the human resource supervisor.

Joann retired from Woodbridge in 1999. After high school she worked as a secretary in a variety of settings.

She worked at the state Capitol, a lawyer’s office and Cape Canaveral in Coco Beach, Florida, before returning to Wisconsin and meeting Sabu, whom she married and moved to Brodhead with to make a new life. She wasn’t in Brodhead long before she met many new friends who became lifelong friends.

Joann and Sabu enjoyed playing bridge every Saturday night for more than 20 years with their great friends Werner and Hazel Weissenfluh. One week Bob and Joann would drive to Monroe with kids in tow, the next week Werner and Hazel would drive to Brodhead. The four-

some enjoyed many vacations and weekend getaways over many years and made a lifetime of memories. The two families grew up together and became one.

Joann is survived by her children, three sons, Mike Curl, Greg Curl and Don Collins (Alejandra); three daughter, Terry (Eddie) Burk, Cathy (Dean) Lapp and LouAnn (Jim) Harmel; 17 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. All of these she loved and touched deeply.

She was preceded in death

by Robert Collins, her husband of 38 years, and Darrell Anderson, her husband of nine years; her parents; a brother, Chandler; a sister, Carol; and two siblings at age 2.

A memorial visitation at DL Newcomer Funeral Home and a gathering at Deb’s Bar, both in Brodhead, were held May 13.

DONNA E. JOHNSON Donna E. Johnson, age 88, of Brodhead, passed away at her home on Saturday, May 15, 2021.

She was born Dec. 4, 1932, in Evansville, Wisconsin, the daughter of Joseph and Lucy (Luther) Hartl. She graduated from Evansville High School and St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Madison, Wisconsin.

Donna was very musical and athletic. Through the years, she worked off and on in area hospitals and clinics and as a Green County Public Health nurse.

Donna was a devout Catholic and a woman of faith. She was a longtime member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Brodhead and a member of the choir, altar society and Council of Catholic Women.

Donna married her best friend and love of her life, Eric “Ike”

Johnson on Aug. 6, 1955, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Evansville.

Donna was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was the heart and soul of her family. Her favorite holiday was Christmas Eve and she hosted wonderful family gatherings.

Donna is survived by her six children, two daughters, Sheila Johnson of Tomah, Wisconsin, and Shelley Johnson of Middleton, Wisconsin; four sons, Eric “Ike Jr.” (Sheryl), Mike (Anne) and Russ (Daphne), all of Brodhead, and Ron (Teresa) of Albany, Wisconsin; 17 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Shirley Hartl, Vir-

gene Hartl, Geneva Johnson and Jean Steuri; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Eric “Ike,” on March 27, 2013; her parents; a sister, Virginia Moore; and brothers, Eugene and Carroll Hartl.

A private Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Rose of Lima Catholic church in Brodhead for immediate family with the Rev. Michael Moon presiding. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery in Evansville.

Brodhead High School senior Kaitlyn Welsh is turning to the local community to help children and families in Haiti.

As her senior project, Welsh is organizing the Walk for Family on Saturday, Sept. 26. The two-mile walk will begin at 9 a.m. at the start of the Sugar River Trail in Brodhead.

Community members also may opt to participate by taking their own walking route and collecting donations for the cause, Welsh said in a news release.

The walk will raise money for One Gift, One Child, a ministry of former Brodhead residents Natalie and Pierre Charlotin. Natalie Charlotin is a Brodhead graduate.

“One Gift, One Child serves to prevent orphans and reunite families in the impoverished country of Haiti,” the news release said. “As a ministry, it provides orphaned children, or those put in orphanages by their families, safety from abuse, poverty, rejection, slavery, trafficking and hatred.

“Their end goal is to provide every child a safe environment and eventual reunion with their family. If they do not have a family, they are placed into a foster home that allows them a safe, loving environment to grow up in.”

Testing will be available while supplies last at the drive-thru sites, which are at the Monroe National Guard Armory, the former Brodhead Fitness Center and the Swiss Center of North America in New Glarus.

Anyone 5 to 17 years old must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian authorized to give consent for the COVID-19 test on their behalf.

People who can be tested at their doctor’s office are encouraged to do so, the release said.

The walk will raise money for One Gift, One Child, a ministry of former Brodhead residents Natalie and Pierre Charlotin. Natalie Charlotin is a Brodhead graduate.

“One Gift, One Child serves to prevent orphans and reunite families in the impoverished country of Haiti,” the news release said. “As a ministry, it provides orphaned children, or those put in orphanages by their families, safety from abuse, poverty, rejection, slavery, trafficking and hatred.

“Their end goal is to provide every child a safe environment and eventual reunion with their family. If they do not have a family, they are placed into a foster home that allows them a safe, loving environment to grow up in.”

Personnel from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection will be setting more than 10,000 traps for gypsy moths in 47 counties from mid-May through early June.

“DATCP requests that property owners allow trappers access to place traps, and that they not disturb the traps once in place,” according to a news release.

The effort includes Green and Rock counties.

“The data we gather from these traps provides an estimate of the state’s gypsy moth population and is used to plan for next year’s spray treatment,” Michael Falk, DATCP’s gypsy moth trapping coordinator, said in the release. “It also helps DATCP’s nursery and Christmas tree inspectors in the fall to check trees for gypsy moth egg masses.”

The traps are small green boxes tied to tree branches. The trap contains the scent of a female gypsy moth that is undetectable to other insects and is used to attract and catch male gypsy moths.

Trappers will monitor traps until the male moths stop flying in August, at which time the traps are removed. Trappers wear fluorescent vests and carry identification cards. Each trap is labeled with a phone number that property owners can call if they have questions or decide they want it removed.

Artrageous Wednesdays featuring art, food, beverages and music, will return May 26 through Sept. 29 outside the Tallman Carriage House on the Rock County Historical Society campus, 450 N. Jackson St., Janesville.

The free-admission events will run from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

“The community responded so positively to last summer’s Artrageous Wednesdays, and are asking about them already for this year,” RCHS Executive Director Tim Maahs said in a news release. “The mix of local artists, live music, food trucks and drinks — all outdoors on the beautiful RCHS grounds — is a terrific way for people to get together casually and enjoy a lovely evening.”

Each Artrageous Wednesday week features one or more different artists, who will set up in the Tallman Carriage House with the large, garage-like doors open. The public is invited to view the art — while wearing masks — and enjoy the scenic campus of RCHS while remaining socially distant.

Live music, a cash bar and a food truck also will be featured each week. Picnic tables are available, or people may bring their own blankets or chairs. Small group tent rental and bottle service is also available by request.

The event kicks off May 26 with a variety of artwork by members of the Janesville Art League. Artwork will be exhibited and for sale on both levels of the Tallman Carriage House.

Live music by Sarabande will begin at 5 p.m.

Family Promise of Green County is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.

The local chapter was founded in November 2011. Since then, the organization has served more than 300 families and more than 700 people, half of whom are children.

The organization’s threetiered model seeks to prevent families from becoming homeless, provide shelter to those who need it and empower families to achieve independence through stabilization.
