Chamber of Commerce gives two Downtown Revitalization Awards

At a small ceremony on May 2, the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce announced that Clayt’s Corner Bar and Everything Decks won its 2016 Downtown Revitalization Awards. They were honored with plaques, and their names were imprinted on a plaque to go in the village hall. Catherine Blakemore made the award presentation.

“The Albany Area Chamber of Commerce would like to thank all those downtown businesses, organizations, government agencies, and residents who made property improvements during 2016,” Blakemore said. “This year, we are awarding two Downtown Revitalization Awards.”

The Chamber of Commerce presented the first award to Clayt’s Corner Bar. “By tuck pointing and painting the exterior of the building, Clayt Sowl has brought an attractive façade to the corner of North Water and Oak Streets. We thank Clayt’s Corner Bar for its enhancement of Albany’s downtown,” Blakemore said.

“The Albany Area Chamber of Commerce is also pleased to present a 2016 Downtown Revitalization Award to Everything Decks. Steve Mortaloni has done a masterful job of remodeling the interior. The electricity was updated, walls were restored to their original brick or painted, and separate lounging areas were created with furniture placed on decks. We applaud Everything Decks for its contribution to the Albany community.”

The Green County Council of the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary honored four public service personnel at their monthly meeting in Monticello on Sunday, April 23. Rachel Anderson of the New Glarus Area Emergency Medical Service received the award as the EMT of the Year. The Fireman of the Year was Trent Gerber of the Brodhead Fire Protection District. The Law Officer of the Year was LT Jeff Sturdevant of the New Glarus Police Department. The Enlisted National Guard/Reservist of the Year was SSG James D. Hataway of the 994th Air Force Reserve Security Forces Squadron. The honorees were recognized for their services to the citizens of communities in Green County. Master Gardeners’ plant sale coming May 13

The story of the 13th Wisconsin Infantry in the Civil War The 13th Wisconsin Infantry in the Civil War was the only unit composed entirely of men from South Central Wisconsin: Rock, Walworth, and Green Counties. Formed late in 1861, they were the only infantry unit trained in Janesville. They served in locations from Kansas to Georgia to Texas. Their story is one of selfless service bringing credit to their home state.

On May 11, Luther Valley Historical Society will present Peter Skelly, who will discuss the history of this Civil War infantry. Skelly, a life-long

The Green County Wisconsin Master Gardeners Association will be conducting their annual plant sale from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 13. The plant sale is an opportunity for area residents to purchase hardy zone 4 perennials, herbs, and annual plants that have been grown locally by UW-Extension Master Gardener volunteers. Started vegetable plants, houseplants and unique plants will all be available, as well as several handcrafted garden use items.

The Green County Master Gardeners Association uses the proceeds from this plant sale to distribute scholarships to Green County area youth who are enrolled, or planning to enroll, in secondary education in a horticulture-related field of study. Funds are also used for other Master Gardener educational events.

The plant sale will be held in the auditorium of the Government Services Building, Pleasant View Complex, N3150 Hwy 81, Monroe.

UW-Extension Master Gardener volunteers will be on hand to help you select plants to fit your gardening needs. Master Gardener volunteers are trained by UW-Extension specialists to assist the public with garden- and horticulture-related questions. Volunteers provide thousands of hours of volunteer hours to community projects through Green County each year.

There are currently over 30 Master Gardener volunteers available to help answer gardening, turf, shrub, fruits, prairie, and other horticulture questions through the UW-Extension office in Green County by calling 608-328-9440.

Albertson Memorial Library invites you to hear UW-Madison Professor Mark Louden, Department of German, present “Who Are the Amish?” on Monday, May 22, at 7 p.m.

Professor Louden contrasts widely-held myths with facts about the Amish and closely related religious groups such as the Mennonites, of which he is a practicing member.

He covers history, tenets of faith of the various branches, lifestyle customs, and much more.

Professor Louden is a linguist and fluent speaker of Pennsylvania Dutch. He has published extensively on this language and other German-American varieties, as well as Yiddish.

Juda students inducted into National Honor Society

On Wednesday, May 3, Juda School inducted 17 members into the Juda High School Chapter of the National Honor Society.

In order to be accepted into the National Honor Society, students must submit an application and demonstrate the four qualities that serve as standards for the Society. These qualities are scholarship, service, leadership, and character.

The students inducted last Wednesday are: Riley Adkins, Taylor Adkins, Samantha Anderson, Nickole Becker, Chelsea Burkhalter, Aurora Daniels, Trent Davis, Logan Geisking, Sara Jordan, Nicole Kamholz, Hailey Kammerer, Quinton Kammerer, Karlee Kesler, Jacob Mahlkuch, Rachel McCullough, Matthew Schmitt, and Skyler Stuckey.

BLOOD DRIVE

Juda High School will be hosting a blood drive on Monday, May 22, in the pit gym from 2 to 6 p.m. For an appointment, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org. Students need to bring either a driver’s license or two forms of other ID (with one that has proof of age). Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission), weigh at least 110 pounds, and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements. You can save up to 15 minutes when you donate blood by using RapidPass! Visit redcrossblood.org/RapidPass for more information. The graduating Juda seniors need 30 pints of blood in order to receive a $2,500 scholarship. JUDA HILL CLIMB

The Juda Hill Climb will be held on Saturday, May 20. The Kids Fun Run starts at 9 a.m., while the 5K Run/2K Walk will start at 9:30 a.m.

SOFTBALL

On Tuesday, May 2, Juda-Albany beat Monticello 19-0. Alexis Goecks

went 4-for-5 with two homeruns.

Nicki Becker and Sammi Detra both went 2-for-2, and Hailey Kammerer went 3-for-4. Becker pitched a twohit shutout. She struck out seven and walked one.

On Thursday, May 4, the Panthers lost a heartbreaking game to Belmont in the 10th inning. Belmont hit a game-winning RBI single over the shortstop to end the game 4-3. Becker pitched 10 innings and gave up two earned runs. She struck out 11 and walked none.

Juda-Albany is ranked second in the Division 4 Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association state poll. Their record is 11-2 overall and 8-0 in the Six Rivers East Conference.

BASEBALL

Last week, the Cardinals split the series with conference rival Bigfoot.

On Tuesday, May 2, Bigfoot defeated the Cardinals 6-1. Skyler Stuckey took the loss on the mound, giving up four earned through six innings.

The Cardinals only had three hits as a team.

On Thursday, May 4, the Cardinals defeated Bigfoot by a score of 3-1. Matt Schmitt went five innings on the mound and got the win. The team had a better showing offensively and had no errors on defense.

Congratulations to all of the students who participated at State Solo and Ensemble on Saturday, April 29.

On Wednesday, May 10, the Biology II and seventh-grade classes will be visiting the Shedd Aquarium.

This year, the Biology II class has studied fish and amphibians, along with many other animals, and the seventh graders have learned about sharks. Both classes must be at the school by 6:30 a.m. Students will get to spend three hours at the aquarium and will be back in time for the afternoon buses.

T-Ball and Coach Pitch information letters have been sent out to the elementary students. If you have any more questions, please call the office for more information.

Mt. Olympus and Milwaukee Zoo trips are being planned. Please watch for more details as things get finalized.

The State CDE Competition was held in Madison on April 28. The Juda FFA dairy cattle team placed third out of 35 teams with Brian McCullough placing sixth individually.

The Ag Mechanics team placed fifth out of 16 teams. In Dairy Handlers, Emily Makos received a silver. Congratulations to all who participated on a job well done!

HONORS NIGHT

Juda School will be hosting Honors Night to award high school students for their dedication and hard work throughout the school year.

This will be held on Wednesday, May 17, at 7 p.m. in the palace gym.

FORENSICS SHOWCASE

SUMMER DRIVING SCHOOL

MJM Hill Driving School will be offering Driver’s Education this summer. Classes will be held on June 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, and 15 from 9 to 11 a.m. The class will be a mix of instructor-led lessons, online lessons, and a behind-the-wheel program.

Instructors will include Kelly Hill, Loren Homb, Deputy Pam Tourdot, and Amy Kundert. There is also an online version of the class available to students if they cannot make it to regular classes. The fee is $310 for all three parts of the program and is the same price for the online version

of classes.

SPANISH CLUB

There will be a meeting on May 10 at 6 p.m. about the Dominican Republic trip this June.

ITALY TRIP

Mr. Diedrich, English teacher from Albany High school, will be hosting a summer trip to Italy. The tentative date of the trip is June 11, 2018. Students will have the opportunity to travel to Florence; to Rome to tour the Coliseum, the Roman Way, Vatican City, the Sistine Chapel, and the Trevi Fountain; to Pompeii; and will take a boat cruise around the island of Capri. The trip is open to all Albany, Monticello, and Juda students currently in grades 8 through 11. Current seniors are also eligible to travel with the discounted student rates even though they will have graduated. If interested, contact Mr. Diedrich.

On Thursday, May 11, breakfast will be breakfast pizza; lunch will be shredded BBQ pork, potato wedges, and applesauce.

Keep the Sugar River sweet and clean After a fairly mild winter, spring is indeed upon us. During the typically cold weather months, folks are normally out skiing, skating, snowmobiling, or ice fishing. But instead, the unusually warm weather with snowless fields and trails and unfrozen lakes and rivers gave folks more of a desire to get out in a kayak or canoe. The “think spring” mentality was with our association all winter as well and inspired us at that time to constantly reflect back on the past summer’s warm weather accomplishments and fun while also thinking ahead to plan activities and

events for upcoming seasons.

Last year kept our association busy with conducting our annual Sugar River Cleanup, participating in the Albany Duck Races and Hooked on Fishing events, working with Water Action volunteers taking water samples and doing tests on the Sugar River, organizing our annual Labor Day Carp Fishing Contest, and working with the Decatur Lake Mill Race Association at the Covered Bridge Days and Fall Fest events at the Embrace the Race pontoon boat rides.

All these events are fun ways that our association works togeth-

er with other Sugar River groups to help keep, maintain, and promote the Sugar River and its small lakes.

Working to keep the river trash-free and navigable, improving the fishery, monitoring the water for toxicity, and partnering with other groups in fun events are just some of the cool activities our association is involved in. As our membership increases, we plan to do even more for the Sugar River, Lake Winnetka, and the surrounding watershed.

Albany Historical Society to meet At its May 16 meeting, the Albany Historical Society will again feature one of its own members, Tim Jones.

“In the Hands of the Enemy” is a special-collection film that depicts the heroes of the Bataan Death March in World War II. One of Jones’s uncles was in this march.

The video launches into interviews with the few remaining survivors of Company A and Headquarters, a portion of the 192nd Tank Battalion, which lost twothirds of its men to the war. Some are telling their stories for the first time.

The film, which was filmed in Wisconsin and the Phil-

ippines, includes actual battle footage from the Death March and footage from prison camps.

Brian Dennehy, star of more than 40 feature films, television, and Broadway, narrates the program as World War II veterans relive and celebrate their survival and triumph of faith, family, and freedom.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the Historical Museum, 119 North Water Street, Albany. The meeting and the program is free and open to the public. Donations are accepted, and refreshments will be served. Please consider joining us.

Obituaries

LEWIS W. SCHLIEM Lewis W. Schliem, 78, passed away on Thursday, May 4, 2017, at his home. He was born on Jan. 4, 1939, in South Wayne, Wis., the son of Louis and Elizabeth (Peterson) Schliem.

He married Virginia Vickers on March 31, 1963, in Browntown, Wis. Lewie served in the U.S. Army from 1958 until 1960 and was a member of AMVETS. He worked at General Motors of Janesville, Wis., for 31.5 years and also belonged to UAW Local 95. He was a member of the Brodhead Fire Department for 43 years and also served as a fire inspector. He was member of the Brodhead Park Board, coached youth basketball and baseball, and enjoyed bowling. Lewis was awarded ‘Outstanding Young Man’ by the Brodhead Jaycees in 1977. He was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ, Brodhead,

He is survived by his wife Virginia; two sons, Jim (Sarah) Schliem, Brooklyn, Wis., Steve (Crystal) Schliem, Monroe, Wis.; a daughter, Shelly (Tim) Glenn, Palmyra, Wis.; nine grandchildren, Zachary, Alex, Makaila, Megan, Michael, Lauren, Derek, Brendan, Brittney; six siblings, Dick (Carol) Schliem, Woodford, Wis., Shirley DeNure, Monroe, Wis., Dale (Doris) Schliem, Mary Lou (Jim) DeVoe, both of South Wayne, Wis., Jerry (Carole) Schliem, Milton, Wis., Terry Schliem, Las Vegas, Nev.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law Alvin DeNure, and “step-dad” Clifford Miller.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Monday, May 8, 2017, at the Congregational United Church of Christ, Brodhead, with Rev. David Frey officiating. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery, with full military rites. Visitation was held from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. Sunday at the D.L. Newcomer Funeral Home, Brodhead.

Borgmann, Oshkosh, Wis., Kathi Gladys was born in Sylvester Borgmann, Ithaca, NY, Jason (Keri) Township, Albany, Wis., on Jan. 11, Mertens, Brodhead; four great-grand1923, the daughter of Clarence John daughters, Kalli and Connie Olson, and Leatha Marie (Miller) Foss. She married Gordon K. Helland on Jan. 21, 1944, at the home of his parents in Juda, Wis. He passed away on Jan. 31, 2016.

Gladys attended Monticello High School and graduated from Monroe Clayton Mahlkuch, a member of High in 1940. She worked at the Monthe Juda Jolly Juniors 4-H Club and a junior at Juda High School, has won 264404 the Green County 4-H Crowley Dairy Leadership Award for 2017.

As a county winner, Mahlkuch will receive a commemorative engraved medallion and the chance to compete for state-level awards, including a chance to compete for two $500 scholarships that will be awarded for continuing dairy education. The state competition will consist of interviews to The Independent-Register conducted at the Wisconsin State Fair in August.

Job fair happening in Monroe May 11 temporary jobs will be participating in the free event. No pre-registration is required for jobseekers. Students looking for part-time employment and/or interested in learning about local careers are also encouraged to attend.

“In addition to bringing in top employers from throughout the Green County region, local workforce service providers will be on hand to assist job seekers in preparing for their search.” said Anna Schramke, Business Services Coordinator for the Southwest Wisconsin Workforce Development Board (SWWDB).

Green County offering Clean Sweep Green County will be offering another Clean Sweep Hazardous Materials Collection Program for county farmers and residents starting on May 1 and running through Oct. 31.

The Clean Sweep collection site is located at the Green County Landfill, W2002 County S, Brodhead.

The Clean Sweep program is an opportunity to dispose of banned products or supplies damaged by moisture or contamination. This will be the tenth year that Green County has offered a Clean Sweep Collection Program. A total of over 115,000 pounds of hazardous material has been collected through the previous collections in Green County.

All Green County residents will be able to dispose of materials at the landfill during normal business hours from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays and from 8 a.m. to noon on the first Saturday of each month. Although City of Monroe residents are no longer allowed to take their trash or recyclables to the Green County Landfill, they are still allowed to dispose of their hazardous materials through this program.

Farmers will be able to dispose of up to 200 pounds, and homeowners can dispose of up to 50 pounds of hazardous materials free of charge without pre-registering.

Farmers and homeowners wishing to dispose of more than these amounts need to pre-register by calling the Green County landfill at 897-8605. All items should be properly identified, and materials will only be accepted by authorized personnel during normal business hours.

Examples of hazardous items that will be accepted include: oven cleaners, spot removers and drain cleaners; herbicides like Atrazine, Roundup, Banvel, 2,4-D, Silvex, brush killers, and many others; insecticides, including Diazinon, DDT, Chlordane, Thimet, Furadan, Sevin, and others; fungicides, including Captan, lead, marine, and auto paint, solvents, animal health products, mercury, degreasers, roofing tar, wood finishes, oil-based paint and stains, hydraulic fluid, pool chemicals, old gasoline, paint strippers, and cadmium, and lithium batteries.

Items that will not be accepted

include tires, latex paint, firearms, and ammunition, Freon 11 and 12 radioactive material, compressed gas cylinders, yard waste, antifreeze, fluorescent tubes, recyclable materials, or biological wastes.

Latex paint can be safely disposed of in the regular garbage as long as it is hardened. If you have small amounts of leftover latex or oilbased paint simply open the can and let it dry out in a well-ventilated area.

Once it has hardened, it can safely be put into the regular garbage. If you have large amounts of paint left over, you can purchase a hardener at paint stores to put in the paint that will harden the entire amount. Another option is to line a box with a plastic bag, add kitty litter or other absorbent material, and then pour the paint over the material. Let it dry and place the bag in the regular garbage.

The Orfordville boys’ track and field team earned fifth with 38 points at the Rock Valley South conference meet last Tuesday. The girls’ squad took home fourth with 60.25 points.

In the boys’ 400-meter dash, junior Ryan Miller placed third in a time of 55.50 seconds, edging Brodhead-Juda’s Nate Ciabatti by .08 in an exciting finish.

Junior Mason Spencer won the 800-meter title with a personal-best time of 2:07.52. Senior Jacob Grayless took seventh at a personal-best time of 2:24.90, and sophomore Rex Brenum captured ninth in a personal-best time of 2:27.88.

In the 1600-meter run, freshman Anthony Terrones secured ninth with a time of 5:55.20.

Junior Sam Nelson earned seventh in the 110-meter hurdles 20.45 seconds. Junior Zach Draeving secured sixth with a time of 47.70 seconds in the 300-meter hurdles, edging Beloit Turner’s Gavin Campbell by .18 in

a thrilling finish. Nelson took ninth in a time of 52.12 seconds.

Parkview took fifth in the 4x200-meter relay with a time of 1:48.04. The Vikings’ 4x400-meter relay squad secured second in a time of 3:43.68. Parkview dominated the 4x800-meter relay, cruising to the title with a time of 9:06.90, beating the field by 10 seconds. The team consisted of Draeving, sophomore Noah Lutzke, junior Evan Spencer, and Mason Spencer.

Senior Austin Breitenfield placed 11th with a personal-best toss of 33’6.25” in the shotput. Sophomore Noah Boers captured 12th with a personal-best heave of 33’.25”, and sophomore John Yacyszyn earned 13th with a personal-best mark of 32’2”.

Breitenfield took 14th with a toss of 72’9” in the discus.

Miller came in sixth at 5’6” in the high jump.

Sophomore Travis Calkins secured 12th in the long jump with a lunge of 15’3”.

Teammates senior Jason Mumm and Calkins tied for eighth in the

triple jump with a distance of 32’9.5”.

In the girls’ 800-meter run, senior Camryn Burtness won the race in a time of 2:27.46, beating the competition by an impressive six seconds.

Sophomore Lexy Olson took seventh with a time of 2:54.37.

Olson secured seventh with a time of 6:12.48 in the 1600-meter run.

Sophomore Angela Schuler captured seventh in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 22.22 seconds.

In the 300-meter hurdles, Schuler earned ninth with a personal-best time of 1:06.31, edging Palmyra-Eagle’s Abbey Vick by .56 in an exciting race down the stretch.

The Vikings took second in the

4x100-meter relay with a time of 54.95 seconds. Parkview captured an exciting 4x200-meter relay in a time of 1:54.41, beating Beloit Turner by .39. The members of the winning relay team included senior Miranda Connell, senior Serena Slove, senior Rodneeya Schwartzlow, and Burtness.

Senior Mckenzie Saglie’s tremendous season continued at the conference meet as she earned third with a toss of 31’10.25” in the shotput. Sophomore Sarah Baker placed fifth with a heave of 30’7”, and sophomore McKenzie Kundert captured eighth at a personal-best mark of 29’6.25”.

Baker also took fifth in the discus with a toss of 87’4”. Saglie earned

seventh with a heave of 81’10”, and junior Anneliese Bleicher came in 12th at 61’8”.

Connell won the pole vault title, clearing 7’6”. Schuler secured eighth with a height of 6’.

Slove earned second in the high jump, clearing 4’10”. Freshman Addy Noble tied for third in a fourway tie at 4’4”.

Connell’s impressive day continued in the long jump as she earned sixth with a distance of 14’6”.

Noble earned ninth in the triple jump with a lunge of 27’0.5’, edging Brodhead-Juda’s Morgan Tresemer by .5”. Sophomore Emily Sheehan placed tenth with season-best mark of 27’.

Orfordville hosting electronics drive The Village of Orfordville will host an electronics recycling drive on Saturday, May 13, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Village Hall at 303 E. Beloit Street.

This recycling drive is only available to residents who live in the village limits of Orfordville. The village has to pay a price per pound to get rid of electronics now.

Please bring your driver’s license with you, as we will be checking for addresses. The cost of recycling electronics has gone up, so we will have

The Parkview track and field squads had strong performances at the Beloit Daily News Invite last Friday. The boys’ squad took home fifth with 64 points, while the girls captured fourth with 77 points.

Junior Ryan Miller placed third in the 400-meter dash with a personal-best time of 53.91 seconds.

Senior Evan Willing secured tenth in a personal-best time of 57.33 seconds.

Junior Mason Spencer earned third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:10.08. Sophomore Rex Brenum ran an excellent 800 as he captured ninth in a personal-best time of 2:21.76, and senior Jacob Grayless took 14th at 2:30.61.

In the 1600-meter run, Grayless earned ninth at a personal-best time of 5:36.24, and freshman Anthony Terrones took 11th at 5:46.26.

Sophomore Maverick Byrns placed 15th in a time of 6:23.23.

Junior Evan Spencer made quick work of the field as he cruised to the 3200-meter title in a time of 10:54.58, which was 20 seconds better than the field.

In the 110-meter hurdles, senior Chris Hicks captured fourth with a personal-best time of 18.29 seconds, edging East Troy’s Mason Malzahn by .07 in an exciting finish. Junior Sam Nelson placed seventh in a time of 19.46 seconds.

The Vikings took sixth in the 4x200-meter relay with a time of 1:46.42. Parkview earned third in the 4x400-meter relay in a time of 3:46.31. The Vikings secured second in the distance medley relay 1200-400-800-1600 at 11:50.42.

participation with Albany Community First and WAV in Albany’s first annual Earth Day event. This was a great event, allowing us to not only promote the Village of Albany itself, but to also promote good conservation on the lake and river. We had fantastic weather to have an outside setup by the new Albany pier with displays of river cleanups, carp contests, and other past events. We even had a painted turtle named Mini Murtle, along with some snakes and frogs and water insects to display, showing examples of some of the important wildlife in the Sugar River.

We hope that by staying connected with other groups in Albany, we can gain an interest for membership in our association.

On Saturday May 20, our association’s biggest event of the year will be happening: the annual Sugar River Cleanup. This will be our 23rd annual river cleanup, and the result of all this work over the years has been extraordinary. Portions of the Sugar River upstream of Lake Winnetka no longer accumulate enough trash in one year to justify ordering a dumpster for that area. Now, we locate the dumpster further downstream to accommodate portions of the river that we have only in recent years begun to attend to. Also in recent years, our river cleanup has doubled in size thanks to working together with the Decatur Lake Mill Race Association.

Merging the work done at the cleanup with other groups enables a much larger stretch of the river to be attended to and brings a lot more volunteers to help out. So what do

Green County Board Updates Things are pretty quiet on the county board front right now. Committees are meeting as usual, but not much out of the ordinary is happening. The next county board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, June 13, at 7 p.m. at the historic courthouse on the square in Monroe.

I attended the last Land and Water Conservation Committee meeting on May 4, and there was discussion about enacting a county-wide moratorium on CAFOs. Discussion and possible action about a moratorium is on the agenda for their next meeting, Thursday, June 1. Agendas for up-

coming meetings can be found on the county website about a week prior to the meetings.

As of the writing of this, the upcoming committee meetings are: Highway, Zoning, Library, Tourism, Law Enforcement, Aging & Disability, and Auditing. All meetings are open to the public.

The Panthers made a crucial defensive play in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. Caitlyn Gilbertson laced a base hit into left field, and Lydia Leahy tried to take the extra base. Left fielder Roth cut down Leahy at third for the final out.

The Panthers got out of a jam in the bottom of the ninth. Abby Althaus hit a seeing-eye single into centerfield with one out.

Leahy then tattooed a line drive off the foot of Beckerm, who recovered to get the out at first. Becker struck out Callie Douglas on a nasty rise ball.

Kammerer connected on a base hit into

centerfield to open the top of the tenth.

Becker moved Kammerer into scoring position with a well-placed sacrifice bunt to give the Panthers two shots at the go-ahead run. Willborn retired Roth on a soft comebacker and Detra on a strikeout.

Belmont walked-off the Panthers in the bottom of the tenth. Nolan and Willborn set up the heroics with consecutive singles with two outs. Ernst then hit a high fly ball to shallow left field to seal the thrilling 4-3 victory.

Jordan led the Panthers’ offense, going 3-for-5. Goecks went 2-for-5 with a run scored. The Panthers banged out 10 hits in the contest.

Becker suffered the tough luck loss going nine-and-two-thirds frames and surrendering 12 hits, zero walks, four runs, and two earned runs while recording 11 strikeouts.

Expanding conversation sparks conservation trend

Wendy Jackson tells an incredible story. It began when she stopped making money and closing deals to observe what was happening to people and the land.

In a new national role with the Land Trust Alliance, Jackson brought this inspiring message to Madison in February. More than 100 people assembled for the Wisconsin Land Trust 2017 retreat and warmed to her story.

“I had a successful career in banking and real estate,” Jackson told the crowd gathered for two days at the UW Arboretum. “I grew up on a family farm, and I enjoyed helping farmers sell their farms to other farmers.

“It quit being fun, though, when I realized farmers weren’t selling to farmers anymore, but to developers. I have a passion for conservation. My son is fourth generation on our family’s farm outside of Birmingham,” Jackson said of her Alabama roots and that moment when she quit her part in uprooting trends and started a trend of her own.

With $50 of her own money, Jackson opened a checking account for the Fresh Water Land Trust. Over the next 15 years, she developed that land conservation network from zero to $40 million in assets. It now conserves more than 15,000 acres of natural land and farmland on 1,000 miles of rivers and streams in an eight-county area.

“It wasn’t easy; we were turned down again and again for funding,” Jackson said. “We had to expand the conversation – to health, the economy, a way of life, the social benefits of conserving land – to urban people,” Jackson said.

About the time Jackson undertook efforts to establish the Fresh Water Land Trust, Alabama drew national attention for a dubious distinction. The state was proclaimed highest of 50 states in alarming increases in obesity.

Jackson linked that trend to another set of statistics, which showed people are 50 percent more likely to exercise if they live near parks and green spaces.

was not just nice to have, but necessary to maintain. We made the connection of mental, physical, and spiritual health to natural lands conservation,” Jackson said. “Engage new people in your work; start by including them in planning and programming. Change the conversation, and the money will appear to get the work done.”

Jackson was able as founding executive director to establish 750 miles of trails along corridors of conserved land in Alabama. She engaged more than 3,000 people in the process of establishing those trails.

farms, urban gardens, wetlands and nature areas enjoy wide support. “Polls in the 60, 70, 80 percent range show public support for land trusts,” she said.

“Be inclusive, unique, positive to bring people together,” she said. “Don’t engage in controversial or partisan disputes. Keep focused on this frightening trend: people are disconnected from land; they don’t know or love land and thus may not help protect it.

“We need to re-inspire new generations of deeply committed people to the land. We need to focus our energies on expanding and diversifying our base of support, reaching out to all who are not engaged in our work. We need to listen to voices not being heard and help them understand that every person deserves the benefits of land conservation,” Jackson said.

Fresh Water Land Trust derives its name from Alabama’s distinction as the 5th most biologically diverse state in the nation. As its website explains, the state has more than 18 river systems and more freshwater species diversity than any other state in the nation.

Alabama is home to 35 percent of U.S. freshwater fish with 11 types of fish found only in its rivers and streams.

Yet Alabama ranks 3rd nationally in threatened endangered species.

Jackson has successfully obtained funds to build and link hundreds of miles of trails, often sourcing funds for transportation from federal, state, and local sources to relieve congestion, provide alternative means of transportation than an individual automobile, or provide access to schools or bus stops. Private funding comes from organizations, foundations, or individ-

uals to construct trails, too.

Closer to home, two other land trust stewards who’ve also been making the “health and nature connection” in Wisconsin joined Jackson at the winter retreat in Madison. Maggie Zoellner of Kettle Moraine Land Trust in Walworth County and Carol Abrahamson, Mississippi Valley Conservancy Executive Director, shared similar successes in a panel discussion.

“People love what they know,” Zoellner said, of her educational efforts that support lands protected with easements and trusts. “We partnered with a butterfly specialist on a program that drew 300 kids. We also worked with a mushroom grower society linked to tree identification and an edible wild plant activity.

“We’re raising the level of nature awareness, connecting people to nature close to home and reinforcing the same messages each year with guided experiences.”

Grant money for such programming, donations through the relationships to people and the land and educational funding initiatives help Zoellner and one part-time assistant conserve land in Walworth County.

Abrahamson works in an eight-county area to conserve land by every link she can think of to health and nature. She employs more than a decade of non-profit management and donor relationship cultivation, and a strong background in agriculture.

She and her husband Bill own a farm in southeast Minnesota, where they grow livestock for beef, pork, chicken sales, fruits and vegetables, too. She was named Minnesota Cattle

“We connect habitat education and physical exercise to health programs.

We incorporate environmental mediation and restoration projects to nature activities for children, and then journaling and pictures,” Abrahamson said, of the grant and donor-funded programming that helps her steward a network of conserved properties and a hiking trail system.

“We use a magazine with stories of the landowners with their photos. We put the emphasis on health and nature and 4,000 acres open to the public in the conservancy. The magazine has a page for paid advertising. I try to look at everything as a fund-raising opportunity for the conservancy’s mission,” she said. That includes hikes and trails that companies and health clinics sponsor, sometimes in “healthy” competition that supports the conservancy.

Gathering Waters Conservancy, which puts the annual Wisconsin Land Trust Retreat together, shared a number of on-line resources and contact information for participants and presenters to help conservancy efforts around the state.

The club has been cleaning this area for the last three years.
