DWD and DATCP offer the following tips to help students protect themselves when they seek seasonal jobs on any job search/placement website: It is not common or normal practice for an employer to ask for your personal information, such as your Social Security number and bank account number (or similar personal financial information) on an initial application. Be wary and use good judgment if unusual information is requested.

Be suspicious of any job offer that requires an upfront fee. Do not provide credit card or bank account numbers and be careful of requests for payment by wire transfer.

Any “job” that requires you to cash a check and send any amount of it to another party is a scam.

Be cautious when dealing with any contacts outside of the United States.

If the job offer is a scam, it is difficult to pursue enforcement action against a person located outside of this country.

Research an organization before making any commitments. Ask for information about the company, including its street address and the name of its owner or chief operating officer. You may wish to call DATCP’s Consumer Protection Hotline (800-422-7128) to check on complaints against the business.

Get the job offer in writing, including any earnings you are expected to

make.

If the interview request or job offer is for a job you did not apply for, it is most likely a scam.

Scammers often send “spoofed” emails with forged email headers that make the messages appear to have originated from someone or somewhere other than the actual source. If the web address (URL) referenced in the sender’s email address does not match the true URL for the business in question, the email may be a scam.

The official email address for the Job Center of Wisconsin is JobCenterofWisconsin@dwd.wisconsin.gov.

A common employment scam to watch out for begins with an email request for a “Google Hangout” interview for a work-at-home position.

The scammer fraudulently uses a legitimate company name and claims to have found the job seeker’s resume on an online employment site.

After a job offer is made during the “interview,” the job seeker is sent a check or money order for “office supplies and equipment,” is instructed to deposit it into their personal account, and is told to buy expensive equipment from a particular vendor.

Unfortunately, the check or money order are fake and the job seeker will be on the hook for the full amount of money withdrawn when the bank discovers the fraud.

(NOTE: Some legitimate orga-

nizations do conduct interviews for work-from-home positions using tools like Google Hangouts, but they do not require purchases or up-front payments.)

With summer around the bend, the seasonal job hunt is underway for many Wisconsin high school and college students. As potential applicants gear up to fire off their applications, the Wisconsin Departments of Workforce Development (DWD) and Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) advise job seekers to be vigilant regarding questionable job postings, particularly those featuring “too-good-to-be-true” employment offers or those asking for upfront payment for training or materials.

“Phony job postings could be ploys to gather personal information from applicants or to sign them up for fake check scams, ‘get rich quick’ schemes, and bogus work-at-home or mystery shopping opportunities,” said Lara Sutherlin, Administrator for DATCP’s Division of Trade and Consumer Protection. “Be very careful about the amount and type of personal information you share in response to an online job listing and be informed about common employment scams before you begin your job search.”

DWD operates JobCenterofWisconsin.com, the State’s free online public labor exchange that connects talent with opportunity and currently has over 100,000 job postings. While DWD strives to validate the identity of all employer representatives who post jobs directly on the site, users are also advised to use caution if they opt to search external sites from JobCenterofWisconsin.com.

Common Cause, Fair Elections Center and others challenge requirements for student IDs Fair Elections Center and Pines Bach LLP filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin, on behalf of Common Cause in Wisconsin and individual plaintiff Ben Quintero, challenging Wisconsin’s unnecessary requirements for student IDs to qualify as voter ID. The lawsuit argues that the student ID requirements are a pointless barrier for casting a ballot in Wisconsin.

Most students are newly registered voters and new to the voting process.

These unnecessary requirements on student IDs can confuse and deter these new voters rather than making elections more accessible for them.

The lawsuit is challenging specific student ID requirements, not the voter ID law as a whole.

“The completely unnecessary hoops that the Wisconsin voter ID

law forces students to jump through to be able to vote, need to be eliminated,” said Jay Heck, the long-time director of Common Cause in Wisconsin. “These pointless obstacles create confusion, frustration, and ultimately disillusionment with what should be a simple and uncomplicated process for students to be able to exercise their fundamental right to cast a ballot. This suit seeks to remove these superfluous barriers.” ”Busy students with exams and jobs already bring multiple documents to the polls in order to register and vote on Election Day, but Wisconsin law requires them to request a separate form of photo ID that displays information poll workers do not need or use,” said Jon Sherman, Senior Counsel at Fair Elections Center. “Just as states cannot lawfully require voters to bring a tooth-

brush or sandwich to the polls, they cannot insist voter present useless or irrelevant information.”

Wisconsin’s current voter ID law singles out student voters, requiring information election and poll workers do not need or use if the voter presents a college or university photo ID when they cast a ballot. Current law allows Wisconsin students to use their campus photo ID if it contains their name, photo, issuance date, an

expiration date not more than two years after the issuance date, and the student’s signature. Students must also show proof of current enrollment, such as an enrollment verification letter or tuition fee receipt.

This proof of enrollment requirement makes issuance and expiration dates unnecessary and irrational for student ID cards, and other forms of accepted ID do not have expiration dates and are indefinitely valid.

DATCP issues poultry testing waiver The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) is waiving certain poultry testing requirements due to a shortage of an antigen used for testing. As a result, poultry owners do not need to test their birds for the pullorum-typhoid disease while the waiver is in effect.

“The occurrence of pullorum-typhoid is rare and it does not cause disease in humans,” says Dr. Darlene Konkle, acting State Veterinarian. “Poultry owners should continue to be vigilant about monitoring their birds and reporting any signs of disease to their veterinarian or DATCP.” Poultry owners must continue to test their birds for Mycoplasma gallisepticum or ensure the birds

or eggs originated from a flock that tested negative for the disease in the calendar year.

The waiver applies until the antigen becomes available to certified testers. There is no timeframe for when the antigen may become available. Currently, only a single manufacturer makes the antigen. Comment period on DNR water quality rules

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is currently developing the following two water quality standards rules, which are now available for public comment on their economic effect: WY-23-13: Revision of chs. NR 102, including processes for waterbody assessments and impaired waters listing, biological criteria for water quality standards, and biological confirmation of phosphorus impairments WT-17-12: Creation of ch. NR 119, establishing procedures for developing site-specific criteria for phosphorus. This rule cross-references revised portions of ch. NR 102, contained in rule WY-23-13 above.

These rule revisions are expected to have minimal economic impact.

The department has developed a draft economic impact analysis and is holding a public comment period to solicit any additional information or advice on the economic effect of the proposed rules. Note that a separate public comment period on the rules themselves will be held after the economic impact analyses have been finalized. This notification is being distributed to those entities that may be interested in or affected by the proposed rules.

Tips to guard against bites and burns this summer STATEPOINT

For families - and everybody else for that matter - protecting skin should be a top summer priority. After all, there is no shortage of summer skin woes you’ll want to avoid.

From protecting skin from sun to repelling disease-carrying insects, here are some top insights that will help you and your family enjoy a safer, more comfortable summer.

Sunscreen: Get it Right When it comes to sunscreen, it’s important to understand and follow sun safety guidelines. Fewer than half of moms (48 percent) knew the correct amount of sunscreen to apply to the face and body while at the pool, lake or beach, according to a NO-AD Sun Care-commissioned survey on sunscreen. The correct amount of sunscreen to be applied -- or reapplied – is at least 2 tablespoons. Unfortunately, 17 percent of moms were unaware that after an initial slathering of sunscreen, they needed to reapply it following extended exposure.

Blackhawk Technical College held a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday, April 24 at the BTC-Monroe Campus to celebrate the construction of a 3,200 sq. ft. lab facility for its Agribusiness degree program. BTC has chosen Keller, Inc as the construction management team on the project. The $650,000 project will provide a new home for the program that will give students the space and opportunity to have important handson training regardless of weather conditions. Annual Green County Master Gardener’s Plant Sale The Green County Wisconsin Master Gardeners Association will be conducting their annual plant sale from 9 – Noon on Saturday, May 18. The plant sale is an opportunity for area residents to purchase hardy zone 4 perennials, herbs and annual plants that have been grown locally

by Extension Master Gardener volunteers. Started vegetable plants, houseplants and unique plants will all be available as well as several handcrafted garden use items.

The Green County Master Gardeners Association uses the proceeds from this plant sale to distribute scholarships to Green County area youth who are enrolled, or planning to enroll, in secondary ed-

Obituaries FRITZ BADERTSCHER Fritz Badertscher, age 77, from Brodhead, died peacefully with his family present after a long illness on April 25, 2019 at the Agrace Hospice in Janesville.

He was born on April 28, 1941 in Monroe, WI, the son of Garde and Alice (Schneider) Badertscher. He married Phyllis Lohmeier on Dec. 3, 1966 in Davis, IL Fritz graduated from Brodhead High School in 1960. After graduation he entered the service by joining the Navy and served on the USS 481 Requin submarine.

After four years of service, he farmed with his father on the family farm south of Brodhead. Fritz worked at Davis Implement for a couple of years and in 1979 he and Phyllis decided to start farming on their own in Twin Grove and eventually returned to the family farm in Brodhead in 1984.

In 1999, he sold their dairy herd and then started raising grain and beef. In 2008 they sold the equipment and beef to retire. As his health failed, he missed being able to put crops in and as he would say “dig in the dirt”. Fritz loved to fly and was active in the Brodhead Airport and a charter member of EAA Chapter 431. He was a Spring Grove town board member for the past 18 years. He enjoyed the yearly trip to Colorado to spend time with his granddaughter.

He is survived by his wife, three daughters, Ann (Cliff Clevenger), Highlands Ranch CO, Nora (Brad Stottlemyer), Lake Geneva WI, Kelly Badertscher, Brodhead; a granddaughter, Rylee Clevenger, Highlands Ranch, CO; two sisters, Sue(Rolf) Winters, South Thomaston, ME, Liz (Arlie) Runaas, Albany WI, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents & grandparents.

A Celebration of Life was held Tuesday, April 30, at D.L. Newcomer Funeral Home, Brodhead, WI, with Rev. Krystal Goodger officiating, with military rites to follow. Visitation was held Monday at the funeral home.

Two Cardinal pitchers rally to shutout New Glarus The Cardinals defeated New Glarus 12-0 on Monday as the Kammerer brothers, Quinton and Gavin, combined to throw a shutout.

Cardinals secured the victory thanks to nine runs in the second inning. The offensive firepower

by Cardinals was led by Quinton Kammerer, Conner Green, Andrew Brockwell, Marco Bueno, and Payton Johnson, all driving in runs in the inning.

Quinton Kammerer earned the win for Cardinals. He went four innings, allowing zero runs on two hits, striking out three and walking zero. His younger brother, Gavin, threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.

Brodhead-Juda totaled nine hits in the game. Kammerer, Johnson, and Green all managed multiple hits for Cardinals. Kammerer went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Cardinals in hits.

MUSIC DEPARTMENT High School Band and Choir are both working diligently to prepare the music for the Band-O-Rama Concert May 13 and the Spring Choir Concert May 20! Make sure all friends and grandparents are notified of the entertainment!

JAZZ BAND Select students from middle and high school will be performing as a Jazz Band for Pleasant View Nursing home May 1st during school as their first performance after a year hiatus.

Their other performances this year will be at the Band-O-Rama Concert May 13 and at a “cocktail hour” before Honors Night May 15.

SPANISH CLUB The Spanish Club would like to thank the Woodford State Bank for allowing them to host a bake sale. It was a huge success! Also, there will be a Spanish Club meeting on May 10.

JUDA HILL CLIMB The Hill Climb is almost here! It will be held on Saturday, May 18.

The Kids Fun Run will start at 9:00 a.m., and the 2K walk and 5K race will start at 9:30 a.m. After the race, there will be food and door prizes that any participant can win, including a night’s stay at the Kalahari Resort! Medals will be given to the top 3 runners in each age bracket. TRACK AND FIELD Taylor Adkins, Nicole Kamholz, Jacob Mahlkuch, Royce Brauer, C.J. Kamholz, and Max Haffele all competed at the Jim Church Invitational on Thursday, April 18. Despite the cold weather, the athletes ran fast, threw hard, and jumped far.

The girls’ team pulled through and received first overall, and the boys’ team managed to place fourth.

MEDIEVAL TIMES FIELD TRIP On Friday, May 10, the sixth graders will take a trip to Schaumburg, Illinois, to visit the Medieval Times Dinner and Theater. They will get to watch a jousting match between people riding horses dressed in medieval attire while eating a fourcourse meal completely without utensils. A bus will be taking the students, and it will return by the end of the school day.

MOTHER’S DAY FLOWER SALE The Family & Consumer Science Department is selling flowers for Mother’s Day! Orders are due Thursday, May 2. Turn your orders into the office or to Ms. Einbeck with payment. There is a wide variety of flowers: You may choose from geraniums, petunias, and a surprise basket, which includes a combination of plants. You may also select different colors. The flowers will be delivered on Friday, May 10. Please make checks payable to Juda High School.

PROM Remember that Prom is May 4!

Admission for couples is $6, singles $4, and spectators are $1. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and Grand March is at 7 p.m. This is a very important day for many teens, and spirits are high! Post-Prom this year will be a trip to Sky Zone. The bus will leave at 11 p.m. and come home at around 3 a.m.

NHS The NHS has set the school-wide Honors Trip for May 15 during the school day. Students who meet grade and citizenship requirements will be headed to Krape Park in Freeport, Illinois. This trip is to reward students’ hard work throughout this school year.

FFA State CDEs was last week on Friday, April 26. The results will be posted at a later date.

GREENHOUSE GRAND OPENING FLOWER SALE The Juda FFA will be hosting a Greenhouse Grand Opening flower

sale! There will be flowers, vegetables, and hanging baskets available to purchase. The grand opening will be on May 1 from 3:30-6:30 p.m.

STEAM Last week was the last week of STEAM during Flex time. Students finished up their projects nicely. We are excited to watch the competition, which is coming up soon.

BASEBALL The boys are starting to get the win train going. They went 2-2 two weeks ago and finished with one loss against Edgerton last week.

The two wins came from New Glarus (12-0) and East Troy(13-3).

Quinton Kammerer started on the mound for both of the games for the Cardinals with Gavin Kammerer in relief for New Glarus and Connor Green in relief for East Troy. The two losses were against Beloit Turner, ranked number 2 in the State for Division 2. Cade Walker started on the mound at home for the first game against Turner with Connor Green in relief. The final score of that game was 8-1. The second game in Beloit, Andrew Brockwell started on the mound with Gavin Kammerer in relief. The final score of that game was 3-2. The Cards play Bellville on Monday, April 29, and Jefferson on April 30 and May 2. Good luck, boys!

SOFTBALL The girls had an eventful week this week. Last Monday, they traveled to Belmont and only got to play the first four innings (5-0 Belmont) before the storm arrived. They will have to finish playing the game at a later date. Last Tuesday, they played Monticello and won 7-1.

Last Thursday’s game against Benton-Shullsburg was canceled and rescheduled to Monday, May 13, in Juda at 4:30 p.m. On Monday, April 29, the girls played Argyle in Albany, and the following day, they played Pecatonica in Juda. Don’t forget, team pictures are on May 2!

On Friday, May 3, they will travel to Poynette and play in the Poynette Invite.

HONORS NIGHT The annual Honors Night will be taking place on May 15 at 7 p.m.

This is the day of the year when seniors are awarded local scholarships, honors students are recognized, and top students in each class

are given awards. Come early and hear the Jazz Band play a cocktail hour. We hope to see you there!

ART DEPARTMENT The high school art classes are painting the clay projects that they sculpted a couple of weeks ago. The middle school rotation class, fourth grade, first grade, and the kindergarten classes are all starting new projects. The sixth graders are working on their stained glass projects, and the fifth graders are catching up on their work. The third-grade class is finishing up their wind chimes, and the second grade is finishing their mad scientist project.

PARENTING IN THE DIGITAL AGE Green County Healthy Community Coalition and Monroe Clinic-SSM are sponsoring an event called “Parenting in the Digital Age” on May 14 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Unplug and connect with other parents of elementary and middle school children as you discuss the challenges and benefits of parenting in the digital age. The event will be held at the United Methodist Church in Monroe. The event is free to attend, and pizza will be served.

INTRODUCTION TO ENGINEERING On Monday the Intro to Engineering class headed to the UW-Madison Physics Department to learn about the University’s plasma physics research. Students got to see their test reactor and meet faculty. In preparation for the trip, students had to write a four-page research essay on plasma physics.

FINDORFF CONSTRUCTION SUMMER CAMP Findorff is excited to sponsor Construction Camp for high school students. This annual program provides students the opportunity to explore the many careers available in the construction industry. Camp runs Monday, June 10 - Friday, June 14! Camp participants will work alongside construction professionals in the carpentry, electrical, and plumbing trades as well as learn about safety on the job site.

Students meet at Middleton High School each morning and are transported to a different location each day. There is no cost to students, but they must commit to attending all five days from 7:45 a.m. - 12 p.m. Transportation to various locations is the student’s responsibility.

REMINDER A reminder to seniors that we are in the home stretch of the school year. There are only a few weeks left until graduation. As for the rest of the high school, we still have a month to go. Keep going strong towards the end of the year.

HOMEWORK CLUB The next dates for homework club are May 7, 9, 14, 16. These are important for the students who are struggling with the end-of-the-year blues! This is a great way to get extra help.

PRIDE DAY The annual Juda Pride Day is coming up May 17! The first half of the day will be volunteer time, and the second half is full of fun activities. In preparation for this, the students will be needing sunscreen, clothes that can get dirty, and work gloves, depending on their volunteer activity.

HS HONORS TRIP For those students that have a good standing with the school and is on the honor’s board will be taking a trip to Krape Park in Freeport.

This will be a day packed full of some nice outdoor activities. Students can bring Frisbees, Cards, Kickball, and more! Lunch will be provided by the school.

YOUTH APPRENTICESHIP “MEET AND GREET” On Monday, May 6, at 3:00 p.m., there will be a Youth Apprenticeship “Meet and Greet” session with Pam Wyss and Jess Hume at Kuhn North America. Any students who would be interested in a Youth Apprenticeship opportunity with them for the upcoming school year may attend.

This will be held at Kuhn North America in Brodhead, and parents are also invited to attend. Kuhn likes to have an informal meeting first to meet the students, provide a tour of the facility, and talk about what a YA opportunity especially looks like there.

Albany Village Board April 8 meeting summary the village crew for their help.

RESOLUTION 01-19: Keepers explained the need to decide what the village wants to do about the increase in the Public Fire Protection expense.

With the addition of fire hydrants for the safety of the village, the expense for the public fire protection will increase, also. So the village will need to see how they want to collect this additional money. Currently, the expense is paid out of tax dollars.

However the tax dollars would have to be increased more than we are able to do. The auditor suggested that we add a small portion of the cost to the water bills, which is what this resolution would do. The board is reluctant, however realize the necessity.

After MUCH discussion, a motion was made by Monson, seconded by Village Board April 8, 2019 Althaus to approve Resolution 01-19 regarding the Public Fire Protection Expense. Roll call vote: Johnson – yes, Monson – yes, Blumer – yes, Nipple – yes. Carried.

The four essential elements of positive youth development are belonging, mastery, independence and generosity. The Next Generation 4-H Club of Green County strives to touch on all of these elements when seeking out community service opportunities in our county. At the March 10 meeting, members of The Next Generation 4-H Club made homemade chew toys to donate to the Green County Humane Society for the animals at the shelter. The idea came from a post on Facebook, showing how to make simple toys for your pets. From that idea, supplies were gathered and younger members of the club assemble them touching on the element of belonging. The chew toys were made from purchased and donated socks along with left over material from blankets the club members had made this past fall. From this one idea, these members were able to demonstrate independence and mastery by making the toys with only an example to follow. By donating what they had made, they learned generosity along with making many animals very happy. This single random act of kindness demonstrated that a simple idea can change the lives of both man and animal alike. The regular meeting of the Albany Village Board was called to order at 6:30 p.m. in the Albany Village Hall

by President Kim Blumer. Members present were: Blumer, Eileen Althaus, Michelle Monson, Fred Johnson, and Larry Nipple. Absent: Nathan Ramsay and Tonya Stephan.

OATHS OF OFFICE: Keepers gave the Oath of Office for the village president and three trustees who were reelected at the last election.

RETAINING WALL ALONG RIVER: Much discussion was held on the retaining wall along the river behind the businesses in the downtown area. With all of the flooding that has been happening, the wall is disintegrating. Also, there is a storm sewer pipe that was run below the building located at 119 North Water Street (Currently the historical society) many years ago that has since been closed. However, the area around this pipe is wearing away and allows the flood waters to seep into the basement of the museum. After much discussion, it was suggested that the property owners along the river contact the Green County Emergency Management office to see if there is any type of assistance that there would be to help with the repairs/replacement of the wall. The board also stated that they would have the village’s engineer look at the pipe the next time that he is in town to see what could possibly be done to stop the problem with that, also. Odyssey of the Mind Team heads to international competition The Juda Middle School Odyssey of the Mind Team won the Wisconsin State Odyssey of the Mind Competition for their age division on Saturday, March 23.

The Odyssey of the Mind Program provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state and world level. Thousands of teams from throughout the U.S. and from about 25 other countries participate in the program.

Juda sent two Division II teams to the State Odyssey of the Mind Competition in Madison. Both teams did very well, receiving 1st and 9th places. This first place finish gave the team an invitation to compete at the World Finals in May. All of the students who participated this year did a wonderful job!

The seven Juda students on the World Finals qualifying team are

eight graders Liana Daniels, Ashton Beacher, Jackie Nusbaum, seventh grader Unity Masseur, and sixth grader Ella Dundee. These students competed in the “Structure Toss” Problem, which is a balsa wood structure problem with a large focus on how much weight the multiple structures can hold after being tossed over a bar. They also produced a creative skit based on a carnival as part of their performance with the problem. Their structure held 265lbs. after being tossed ten feet.

This is Juda’s ninth year competing in the Odyssey of the Mind Program. As many as 750 teams from around the world will compete at the world finals. To make it to world finals, teams must have placed first in their state tournament and received a qualifying score.

Love and money: eight tips for couples to improve their finances When love and romance are in the air, talking about finances may be the last thing on one’s mind.

However, experts say that regular conversations about money are essential for healthy finances and healthy relationships.

Unfortunately, 47 percent of Americans say their spending equals or exceeds their income, and 45 percent do not have enough savings to cover at least three months’ worth of living expenses, according to a 2018 study by the Center for Financial Services Innovation. To help you and your partner get the conversation started and get your finances on track, the professionals at Wells Fargo are offering eight tips: 1. Pay yourself first: With each paycheck, set aside some income for savings -- about 5 to 10 percent is a good target. Whether it’s for a rainy-day fund or the downpayment of a house, you and your partner can discuss how to prioritize savings for the greatest impact. This may also be a good time to discuss whether it makes more sense to have a joint account or retain individual savings accounts.

2. Track your spending: Do you know where your money is going each month? Online tools and apps make tracking easier than ever before, helping you gain insights into your individual and combined spending habits so you can adjust where necessary.

3. Create a safety net: Do you have emergency savings that would cover three to six months’ worth of expenses? This is a basic measure of financial security that you and your partner can work on building together.

4. Pay down your high-interest debt: Honest conversations about debt can be especially hard for many couples. But transparency is not only ethical, it can serve as the first step to confronting the issue head-on. To tackle debt proactively

and save money in the long run, it helps to be strategic, starting with the highest-interest debt that’s costing you the most first.

And with a record 15 percent of 25-35-yearolds living in their parent(s) home, according to PEW research, when better to start than in childhood?

“The key to talking to your kids about money is just that -to start talking,” says Sarabeth O’Neil-McAuliffe, author and chief marketing officer at Family Credit Management, a non-profit credit-counseling agency.

Here are some tips to get started: • Start Slow: It is okay not to disclose the amount of debt you have or how much is in your savings account, but simply discussing the value of a dollar can go a long way.

valuation of property shall first be made in writing and filed with the clerk of the board of review within the first 2 hours of the board’s first scheduled meeting, except that, upon evidence of extraordinary circumstances, the board may waive that requirement up to the end of the 5th day of the session or up to the end of the final day of the session if the session is less than 5 days. The board may require objections to the amount or valuation of property to be submitted on forms approved by the Department of Revenue, and the board shall require that any forms include stated valuations of the property in question.
