County Board passes wheel tax, approves bond sale

The Organizational Meeting and County Board Meeting took place on April 17 at 7 p.m. in the County Board Room of the Historical Green County Courthouse in Monroe. The 2018 - 2020 Green County Board was sworn in and the Chair, First Vice-Chair, and Second Vice-Chair positions were elected. The Board elected Art Carter as the Chair, Dennis Everson as the First Vice-Chair, and Jerry Guth as the Second ViceChair. The meeting included the passing of a resolution that provides for the sale of $5,500,000 of building bonds. This is the last in the series of

bonds to be passed for the new Government Services building. Several annual reports were presented, and there were fund transfers between various accounts and the general fund. The fund transfers were for over- and under-budgeting of departments; there was more over-budgeting than under-budgeting which resulted in more money being returned to the General Fund than transferred out.

An ordinance for an annual county vehicle registration fee passed with a vote of 29 - 1. This ordinance, 18-0403, can be found on the Green County website if you would like to read it. Vehicles, defined as auto-

mobiles or motor trucks of not more than 8,000 pounds, will be assessed a $20.00 county registration fee at the time of registration or registration renewal. The money collected from this registration fee will provide Green County Highway Department with a source of funds in addition to other funding sources currently being utilized. It is estimated that approximately $600,000 will be collected annually from this registration fee, with all of it (minus a nominal WisDOT administrative cost of $0.17 per vehicle) staying in Green County for

the sole use by the Highway Department for Green County roads and bridges.

After County Highway Commissioner Chris Narvason’s presentation a few months ago about the state of Green County’s roads, it is clear that more funding is needed to keep our roads from falling into further disrepair; funding from the state and local levy is not adequate. Once our roads and bridges become unsafe and there are not funds to repair them, they will

Livestock Facility Study Group sends report to County Board The Green County Livestock Facility Study Group will present its report and recommendations to the Green County Board at its May 8 meeting. At this meeting the County Board will vote on whether or not to accept the report and recommendations for consideration. If the County Board votes yes, the relevant county committees will then begin to look at the recommendations. The Green County Livestock Facility Study Group was estab-

lished by resolution of the Green County Board on August 8, 2017.

Brodhead Historical Society meeting set for Monday

The next meeting of the Brodhead Historical Society will be held on Monday, April 30.

The meeting will begin with the featured presentation by Kris Winkler and Lynn Lokken, who will be showing some of their collection of aprons. The two have gathered over 200 aprons, some dating back to the 1890s. The two women are also barn quilt painters, Master Gardeners and quilters.

After their presentation, there will be a short business meeting. The public is welcome to attend this free event, beginning at 7 pm in the Bank of Brodhead Courtesy Room.

The Livestock Facility Study Group will be presenting its findings and recommendations to the County Board at the next County Board meeting on Tuesday May 8 at 7 p.m., at the Historic Courthouse in Monroe. The Study Group has been working very hard for the last nine months and I am anxious to hear their recommendations.

Going digital with math homework

Throughout the past ten years, Albany School District has continually upgraded technology in order to help promote growth in 21st century skills and to increase efficiency and effectiveness of teaching. One of the newest ways student learning is being affected is through the use of digital online math homework for high school math classes.

The concept is simple to grasp, rather than completing homework with paper and pencil, students utilize electronic devices to complete and turn-in math assignments. Students sign-in to the website www.Bigideasmath. com where a multitude of resources exist in order to support learning and provide immediate feedback.

Schwab, Albany High School’s math teacher, said the online homework has made grading and analyzing homework fast and efficient. He is able to see exactly what students struggle with in a homework assignment and then adjust his classroom lesson accordingly.

In addition to the instructor benefits of the online homework, students have benefited from many of the homework resources as well. When students answer a question, they can

Albany softball stand-out raising funds for All-Star Game attendance Sammi Defta, of Albany High School, has been chosen for the Wisconsin Softball Coaches Association Senior All-Star team. Defra was selected out of a pool of players from across the state.

The All-Star game will be held on June 12, 2018, at the Woodside Sports Complex in Wisconsin Dells.

Proceeds from these All-Star games will go to the Special Olympics Wisconsin.

SOFTBALL The Juda-Albany Panthers have played two more games. On Thursday, April 12, they played Highland at the Albany field. The score was 7-0 with the help of Albany Senior Samantha Detra’s home run.

On Tuesday, April 17, the Panthers played Argyle. Nicki Becker pitched a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts. They did not score very many runs until the 6th inning when Albany’s Hailey Freitag sparked the inning with her two-run home run.

TRACK A track meet at Clinton on Saturday, April 14, was canceled. The meet at home on Tuesday, April 17, was also canceled. The next meet will be held today, April 25, at East Troy.

BASEBALL On April 13 and 14, the scheduled games were canceled as well as the rescheduled game on the 16th.

The boys were able to play against Turner on the 17th, though, but ultimately lost 10-0 in 5 innings. Juda junior Quinton Kammerer started the game pitching, and Almanzo Friedly pitched an inning as well. Quinton also chipped in on offense with a single but couldn’t start a spark for the other hitters. They hosted Turner again on Thursday but crumbled 110. Luke Skoumal took the start and the loss. The Cardinals were scheduled for games on April 20 and 23.

PROM Prom will be held on Saturday, May 5. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m.

Grand March will begin at 8:30 p.m.

The dance will go until 11 p.m., and Post Prom will begin at 12 a.m. and go until 3:30 a.m. The cost is $6 for couples, $4 for singles, and $1 for spectators. If you’re bringing a date from a different school, do not forget to stop by the office and fill out a permission slip.

JUDA HILL CLIMB Up and coming is this year’s Juda Hill Climb, which is being organized

by Spanish Club. It will be held on Saturday, May 19. The Kids Fun Run will begin at 9 a.m., and the 5k Run/2k Walk will begin at 9:30 a.m.

SPANISH CLUB This year, the Spanish Club will be organizing the Juda Hill Climb. Registration cost is $25 before the race and $30 at the race. Registration will also guarantee a t-shirt. On April 27, Spanish 3 and 4 classes are taking a

lunch trip to Luna Maya. Students: Remember to bring your own money.

MUSIC DEPARTMENT State Solo and Ensemble will be held on Saturday, April 28, at UW Platteville. The Middle School Band & Choir attended Large Group Festival at Albany on Wednesday, April 25. Congratulations to all band and choir participants. You all did a great job.

MS BAND TRIP The 8th-grade band students took a trip to The Wilderness Resort in Wisconsin Dells on April 23.

MATH DEPARTMENT Mr. Anderson is helping to prepare his Pre-Calculus and Algebra II students for the UW School System’s placement test. The placement test is what allows students to take math classes like Physics, Statistics, Calculus, and Pre Calculus for college credit as long as they score well enough on the test.

ART DEPARTMENT Last week the kindergarten class and the first graders worked with watercolors. The second graders drew superheroes, and the third graders started a starry night project. The fourth graders finished their printings, and the fifth graders painted.

The sixth graders learned about stained glass, and the middle school rotation class created a texture collage. The high schoolers worked on their collages.

FFA The new FFA Officer Team for the 2018-2019 year has been announced.

NEW AG ADVISOR The school is happy to announce that our current student teacher for the ag department, Ms. Jenna Beitz, will be the new agriculture instructor at Juda School. Ms. Beitz will be graduating from the University of Wisconsin - Platteville on May 12, and she is originally from a nice town in Iowa. She looks forward to a wonderful new school year, and she is excited about the endless possibilities that the Juda FFA has to hold.

CHEESE DAYS PRINCE AND PRINCESS CONTEST The 2018 Green County Cheese Days Prince & Princess Contest will be held on June 2, 2018. To qualify, one must be 6 years old by Friday, September 14, 2018, and not older than 9 by Sunday, September 16, 2018, and must be a Green County resident. A parent or guardian also must accompany the child to all events as well as provide transportation to and from all events. Fiscal Facts: Background of Wisconsin Lawmakers

At the start of the 2017 Legislature, the average age of the legislators was 50 years for representatives and 58 for senators. Most legislators had university or technical college degrees.

In the 2017 Legislature, one had a PhD, one was a veterinary doctor, nine had law degrees, 20 had master’s degrees, 58 had bachelor’s degrees, and four had associate degrees. They also came from a variety of occupational backgrounds (e.g., six were practicing attorneys and 56 listed themselves as “full-time legislators”).

Additional occupations included farmer, newspaper publisher, labor arbitrator, realtor, and librarian. In 2017, women occupied 31 seats in the legislature.

In 2017, Wisconsin legislators received an annual salary of $50,950. Lawmakers also receive a daily payment when they are in Dane County on legislative business.

In 2015, the Assembly set its per diem at up to $157 for an overnight stay, and up to $78.50 for a day visit. Representatives may claim a maximum of 153 days a year for per diems in the Assembly.

In the Senate, members receive a flat $115 per diem if they reside outside Dane County, and $57.50 if they live in Dane t.

Our goal is to organize a fun, safe, and alcohol-free event. The committee, with input from students, has already decided on a venue for post-prom, Brodhead Middle School. Now our attention turns to entertainment and prizes to entice teenagers to join in the fun.

Wedding dresses: Styles vary with time, locations A wedding dress or wedding gown is the clothing worn by a bride during a wedding ceremony. Color, style and ceremonial importance of the gown can depend on the religion and culture of the wedding participants.

In Western cultures, brides often choose white wedding dress, which was made popular by Queen Victoria in the 19th century. In eastern cultures, brides often choose red to symbolize auspiciousness.

Western culture Weddings performed during and immediately following the Middle Ages were often more than just a union between two people. They could be a union between two families, two businesses or even two countries.

Many weddings were more a matter of politics than love, particularly among the nobility and the higher social classes. Brides were therefore expected to dress in a manner that cast their families in the most favorable light and befitted their social status, for they were not representing only themselves during the ceremony.

Brides from wealthy families often wore rich colors and exclusive fabrics.

It was common to see them wearing bold colors and layers of furs, velvet and silk. Brides dressed in the height of current fashion, with the richest materials their families’ money could buy.

The poorest of brides wore their best church dress on their wedding day.

The amount and the price of material a wedding dress contained was a reflection of the bride’s social standing and indicated the extent of the family’s wealth to wedding guests.

Until the late 1960s, wedding dresses reflected the styles of the day. From that time onward, wedding dresses have often been based on Victorian styles.

The first documented instance of a princess who wore a white wedding gown for a royal wedding ceremony is that of Philippa of England, who wore a tunic with a cloak in white silk bordered with grey squirrel and ermine in 1406. Mary, Queen of Scots, wore a white wedding gown in 1559 when she married her first husband, Francis Dauphin of France, because it was her favorite color, although white was then the color of mourning for French Queens.

This was not a widespread trend, however: prior to the Victorian era, a bride was married in any color, black being especially popular in Scandinavia.

White became a popular option in 1840, after the marriage of Queen Victoria to Albert of Saxe-Coburg, when Victoria wore a white gown trimmed with Honiton lace. Illustrations of the wedding were widely published, and many brides opted for white in accordance with the Queen’s choice.

Even after that, for a period, wedding dresses were adapted to the styles of the day. In the early 1900s, clothing

included a lot of decorations, such as lace or frills. This was also adopted in wedding dresses, where decorative frills and lace was common.

For example, in the 1920s, they were typically short in the front with a longer train in the back and were worn with cloche-style wedding veils. This tendency to follow current fashions continued until the late 1960s, when it became popular to revert to long, full-skirted designs reminiscent of the Victorian era.

Today, Western wedding dresses are usually white, though “wedding white” includes shades such as eggshell, ecru and ivory.

Later, many people assumed that the color white was intended to symbolize virginity, though this was not the original intention: it was the color blue that was connected to purity, piety, faithfulness, and the Virgin Mary.

Current fashion About 75 percent of wedding dresses on the market are strapless dresses or sleeveless, in part because such dresses require less skill from the designers and are easier to alter to fit correctly.[9] However, the sleeved wedding gown as well as wedding gowns with straps have both become more popular in recent years.

Eastern culture Many wedding dresses in China, India (wedding sari), Pakistan (heavily embroidered shalwar qameez or lehngas) and Vietnam (in the traditional form of the Ao dai) are red, the traditional colour of good luck and auspiciousness. Nowadays, many women choose other colours besides red. In modern mainland Chinese weddings, the bride may opt for Western dresses of any colour, and later don a traditional costume for the official tea ceremony.

In modern Taiwanese weddings, the bride generally picks red (following Chinese tradition) or white (more Western) silk for the wedding gown material, but most will wear the red traditional garment for their formal wedding banquets.

Traditionally, the father of the bride is responsible for the wedding banquet hosted on the bride’s side and the alcohol (specifically called “xi-jiu,” confusingly the same as what the wedding banquet itself is called) consumed during both banquets.

While the wedding itself is often based on the couple’s choices, the wedding banquets are a symbolic gesture of “thanks” and appreciation, to those that have raised the bride and groom (such as grandparents and uncles) and those who will continue to be there to help the bride and groom in the future. Thus out of respect for the elders, wedding banquets are usually done formally and traditionally.

Red wedding saris are the traditional garment choice for brides in Indian culture. Sari fabric is also traditionally silk. Over time, colour options and fabric choices for Indian brides have expanded.

Today fabrics like crepe, Georgette, charmeuse, and satin are used, and colors have been expanded to include gold, pink, orange, maroon, brown, and yellow as well. Indian brides in Western countries often wear the sari at the wedding ceremony and change into traditional Indian wear afterwards (lehnga, choli, etc.).

A Japanese wedding usually involves a traditional pure white kimono for the formal ceremony, symbolizing purity and maidenhood. The bride may change into a red kimono for the events after the ceremony for good luck.

The Javanese people of Indonesia wear a kebaya, a traditional kind of blouse, along with batik.

and Muslim Filipinos don other forms of traditional dress during their respective ceremonies.

Native American culture The indigenous peoples of the Americas have varying traditions related to weddings and thus wedding dresses. A Hopi bride traditionally had her garments woven by the groom and any men in the village who wished to participate.

The garments consisted of a large belt, two all-white wedding robes, a white wedding robe with red stripes at top and bottom, white buckskin leggings and moccasins, a string for tying the hair, and a reed mat in which to wrap the outfit. This outfit also served as a shroud, since these garments would be necessary for the trip through the underworld.

A Pueblo bride wore a cotton garment tied above the right shoulder, se-

cured with a belt around the waist.

In the traditions of the Delaware, a bride wore a knee-length skirt of deerskin and a band of wampum beads around her forehead. Except for fine beads or shell necklaces, the body was bare from the waist up. If it was a winter wedding, she wore deerskin leggings and moccasins and a robe of turkey feathers. Her face was painted with white, red and yellow clay.

The tribes of Northern California (which include the Klamath, the Modoc and the Yurok) had a traditional bridal dress woven in symbolic colors: white for the east, blue for the south, yellow (orange) for the west; and black for the north. Turquoise and silver jewelry were worn by both the bride and the groom in addition to a silver concho belt. Jewelry was considered a shield against evils including hunger, poverty and bad luck.

Wedding rings: History dates back to ancient times A wedding ring or wedding band is a finger ring that indicates that its wearer is married. It is usually forged from metal, and traditionally is forged of gold or another precious metal.

The earliest examples of wedding rings are from Ancient Egypt. Western customs for wedding rings can be traced to ancient Rome and Greece, and were transmitted to the present through Christendom in Europe, which adapted the ancient customs.

Depending on culture, a wedding ring is typically worn on the base of the left or right ring finger. Many spouses wear their wedding rings day and night, causing an indentation in the skin that is visible even when the ring is removed. Another indication of their cultural importance is that wedding rings are among the few items that prison inmates and visitors are permitted to wear.

History It is commonly believed that the first examples of wedding rings were found in ancient Egypt. Relics dating to 6,000 years ago, including papyrus scrolls, are evidence of the exchange of braided rings of hemp or reeds between spouses.

Ancient Egypt considered the circle to be a symbol of eternity, and the ring served to signify the perpetual love of the spouses. This was also the origin of the custom of wearing the wedding ring on the ring finger of the left hand, because the ancient Egyptians believed that this finger enclosed a special vein that was connected directly to the heart,denominated in Latin the “Vena amoris”.

The Western traditions of wedding rings can be traced to ancient Rome and Greece, and were first associated with the marital dowry and later with

a promise of fidelity. The modern exchange of rings derived from the customs of Europe in the Middle Ages as part of Christendom.

In the United States, wedding rings were initially only worn by wives, but became customary for both husbands and wives during the 20th century.

Historical styles Gimmel rings During the 16th and 17th centuries, European husbands bestowed a gimmel ring upon their wives. Similar to the puzzle ring, the gimmel ring consisted of two interlocking bands. The bride and groom both wore one of these bands after their engagement, and the two bands were reunited during the wedding ceremony. that was popular during the Renaissance era. It was a band of sterling silver inscribed with a poem or “poesy”.

Other styles Different cultures used many other historical styles of wedding ring.

For example, see the image below of the Byzantine ring depicting Christ uniting bride and groom. Also, in the Middle East the puzzle ring was a historical custom: this ring consisted of several pieces that joined together into a cohesive band when worn properly.

The object of this style of ring was to render it very difficult to put on the finger properly such that, if the wife removed it, her husband would know.

The fede ring, being a band consisting of two hands clasped in betrothal, is another historical custom of Europe that ostensibly dates from antiquity.

Limited gold content in the United Kingdom In 1942 during the Second World War, British wartime restrictions on the manufacture of jewelry resulted in “utility” wedding rings that were limited to a maximum mass of two pennyweights, being slightly heavier than 3 grams, and were forged of 9 carat gold rather than the traditional 22 carat.

The Regional Assayer Office hallmarked these rings, which guaranteed their gold content and compliance with the wartime regulations with a special utility mark adjacent to the mark for the year on the inside of the band; the hallmark resembled a capital “U” with the bottom curve absent or two parentheses enclosing a space, i. e., “( )”.

Double-ring ceremony The double-ring ceremony describes the exchange of wedding rings by and for both spouses. In several European nations such as the Nordic countries, it is common to exchange plain engagement rings of the same form for both sexes, and typically, an additional, more precious, and bejeweled wedding ring is given to the bride.

In the nuptials, the groom’s ring becomes a wedding ring also, and can be bestowed anew by the bride as a part of the wedding ceremony. The engagement is commonly a matter of agreement between the two, and the wedding rings are chosen together.

Both engagement and wedding rings are worn on the left hand, the bride having both rings together. Occasionally, the groom receives a separate wedding ring. In Germany and Austria, both parties use engagement rings worn on the left hand. At the nuptials, a wedding ring is placed on the right hand, as in several east European nations, including Bulgaria, Poland, and Russia.

This can be a new ring for the bride or both, or reusing the engagement rings. Any engagement rings can then remain on the left hand or be transferred to the right hand. In Germany, in has been customary for both the bride and the groom to wear a wedding ring since at least the 1870s and mentions of couples exchange rings during the wedding ceremony in the Netherlands can be found at least as far back as 1815.

In Brazil, Mexico and Spain both sexes also wear engagement rings, and the groom’s ring often becomes a wedding ring in the nuptial exchange ceremony. In The Netherlands plain bands can be worn on either hand, left for Catholics and right for Protestants.

When engaged, both bride and groom wear what will be the wedding band on the opposite hand and switch hands

after the wedding.

Compositions and styles In Western nations, wedding rings are often forged of rose, white, or yellow gold; palladium, platinum, argentium silver, or, more recently, silicone. The perpetuity of noble metals symbolizes the permanence of the marriage.

Common engravings on the inside of the ring include the name of one’s spouse, the names of both spouses, the date of the wedding, and/or a phrase of significance to the spouses. In many nations the engagement rings are plain while the bride’s wedding ring commonly is bejeweled.

Some customs include the wedding ring as the final of a series of gifts, which also may include the engagement ring, traditionally given as a betrothal present. This custom was practiced in ancient Rome and is possibly much older.

In more elaborate weddings, a ring bearer (who is often part of the family of the bride or groom) may assist in the ceremonial parading of the rings into the ceremony, sometimes on a special cushion.

Among Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Christians, the exchange of rings is not technically part of the wedding service, but rather are exchanged at the betrothal. It is always a two-ring set given to her by the priest or by the best man.

The orthodox Christian Church of Greece has recently stopped performing betrothal blessings separately, as these were often non-committing, and now a betrothal ceremony is the initial part of the wedding service.

In many families an informal blessing is now performed by the betrothed ones’ parents in a family dinner that formalizes the betrothal. The ceremony of betrothal is now possibly performed immediately before the wedding (or “crowning” as it is more properly called), and the actual symbolic act of marriage is not the exchange of rings, but the crowning.

Historically, the wedding ring was connected to the exchange of valuables at the moment of the wedding rather than a symbol of eternal love and devotion, a sign of “earnest money.” According to the 1549 edition of the Book of Common Prayer: after the words ‘with this ring I thee wed’ follow the words ‘This gold and silver I give thee’, at which point the groom was supposed to hand a leather purse filled with gold and silver coins to the bride.[15] It is a relic of the times when marriage was a contract between families, not individual lovers.

Both families were then eager to ensure the economic safety of the young couple. Sometimes it went as far as being a conditional exchange as this old (and today outdated) German formula shows: ‘I give you this ring as a sign of the marriage which has been promised between us, provided your father gives with you a marriage portion of 1000 Reichsthalers’.

Midwest Farm &Ag Northwest Illinois prairie enthusiasts get fired up for Spring

As they do each spring and autumn, members of the Northwest Illinois Prairie Enthusiasts, also known as NIPE, begin conducting prescribed burns on wild lands across this corner of the state. NIPE is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to preserve the Illinois tall grass prairie. NIPE has worked to establish protected prairie sites of their own as well as working with other conservation organizations and private landowners.

The prairie is a fire dependent eco system. Without regularly prescribed burns being done the prairie begins to die off while undesirable weeds begin to thrive. In modern times, there is also an issue with invasive species taking root and becoming the dominant form of plant life. In order to keep the prairies thriving and healthy prescribed burns are done on sites at least once within five years.

Recently, a 20-acre burn was done at Hanley – Savanna Prairie, west of Hanover and a 30 acre burn at Lone Tree Farm south of Stockton.

prescribed burns are volunteers. Ed Strenski, Land Manager for NIPE is the Burn Boss on these projects and like many of the volunteers, Strenski has been certified by the Illinois Fire Service Institute. Strenski said, “NIPE is one of the members of a burn coop. Several organizations team up to

enlist volunteers, provide training and equipment and do prescribed burns in a manner that is professional and safe.

Safe for all of our volunteers and safe for all of the neighbors.”

There are a number of factors that have to be taken into consideration before large areas of land can be set on

fire. Safety is of course a primary concern. Additionally, in order to ensure that the burning will have the desired effect on a prairie, there are special considerations. Strenski said, “There’s considerable planning and strategy that goes into a prescribed burn before open flame is put down on the ground.

Weather, wind, terrain, the burn history of a property and the reason for the burn all have to be taken into account when planning an event.

“For instance, strong winds coming from a certain direction that may cause us to believe a fire isn’t advisable in one location could be an asset on a different property. There are also the materials on the landscape that will burn.

If the prairie doesn’t have enough dry plant matter, fire will just not work.

Humidity can also inhibit the performance of the fire. High humidity will dampen the driest field enough to prevent the fire from accelerating.

“Hollow trees, old logs along with any number of hazards represent safety concerns. Smoke can swirl from one direction in thick clouds only to turn and come back at you. In the end though, the prescribed burns are necessary to promote the health of the prairies. When the fire is done and the stretch of land is blackened, it’s exciting to come back in a week and see the green shoots rising from the ashes.”

100 Women Who Care make record donation to Gaited Journeys Equine Congratulations to Gaited Journeys Equine assisted therapy for being the recipient of the February Quarterly donations! This organization, located in Rock City, uses horses to facilitate healing, self-discovery, inner growth, confidence and respect within the individuals interacting with them. Gaited Journeys, run by Donna and Randy Macklin has 19 horses on the farm and those horses are consistently used to assist veterans and their families working through PTSD issues. They also serve girls at NCS Youth Home and help area students resolve trauma caused by physical, emotional and sexual injury, anxiety and more. The individuals and families all work to develop a relationship with the horses and in turn hone their communication skills, build trust, release anger in a positive manner and develop a strong sense of self-worth and confidence.

Donations from 100 Women Who Care members total $13,950 for Gaited Journeys. This is a new record-high donation from the chapter to a local non-profit organization. What a great way to celebrate our third year anniversary.

Money from the donations will be used to provide equine-assisted therapy to at-risk teens. This will be accomplished not only by direct therapy with the individuals but also through the purchase of updated supplies such as saddles and helmets. Additional training/certification in equine-assisted therapy through a five-day course will be utilized and basic supplies for the horses will be purchased with the funds.

Darlington Ridge Farms, LLC, located at 24425 St. Peters Road, Darlington, Wis., is a labor of love for managing partners Jim and Katie DiGangi. Hailing from New York state, Jim is a third-generation farmer who grew up on his family’s 40-cow dairy farm.

After earning his bachelor’s degree and gathering farm management experience in Idaho and California, he headed to the Midwest and Darlington Ridge Farms, LLC was established in 2008. Katie is

a sixth-generation farmer who grew up on her family’s dairy farm in Southwest Wisconsin.

She works off the farm helping local dairy producers and veterinarians to produce a safe and nutritious food supply and has a passion for cow comfort and health with Zoetis. While raising their daughter Mila to love the farm, the DiGangi’s work alongside their employees to keep the 2,600 Holstein dairy cows and the land well cared for. The milk from their farm is shipped through DFA (Dairy Farmers of America), and is crafted in various delectable dairy products at local milk and cheese plants.

“We’re excited to share a glimpse of the life we get to enjoy daily while offering consumers greater perspective of where their food comes from,” says Katie DiGangi.

“We hope the event will provide an opportunity for attendees to connect with our farm and the local farms supplying the ingredients while learning about the stewardship practices of all the farms,” shares Jim DiGangi.

For hunters spring means turkey season Approximately 80,000 hunters will be heading to the field for the 2018 spring turkey hunting season, which began with the first period on April 18.

Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Conservation Warden and Hunter Education Administrator Jon King says there are two key factors needed for safe turkey hunting.

“The two most critical ingredients for a successful spring hunt are a detailed hunting plan in one hand and a firm grip on firearm safety in the other,” King said.

DNR statistics show 80 percent of accidents during turkey hunting seasons involve hunters mistaking other hunters for game, or hunters failing to positively identify their target. The other 20 percent of accidents are self-inflicted, usually the result of violating one of the four firearm safety rules.

“Turkey hunters, like all hunters, must practice these four basic safety guidelines when handling their

firearms,” King said. “Treat every firearm as if it is loaded, always point the muzzle in a safe direction, be sure of your target and what’s beyond it, and keep your finger outside of the trigger guard until ready to shoot.”

It’s a good idea to wear a blaze orange cap or gloves while walking. And find a hunting spot that allows you to rest your back against a tree or some other object that is as wide as your shoulders. This helps protect you from not only an errant shot, but from the good vision of the turkey.

Never stalk a wild turkey and don’t try to approach closer than 100 yards to a gobbler. The chances of getting close enough for a shot are slim, but the chances of becoming involved in an accident are increased. The less you move the safer and more effective you will be in field.

Follow these simple rules for a safe and successful hunt.

• Identify your target; it’s not a

good enough reason to take a shot when a hunter only thinks they are seeing a legal target.

• Do not shoot at sound and movement.

• Be certain of your target, what’s in front of it and beyond it.

• Avoid wearing red, white and blue. These colors are also shared by gobblers.

• Use gobble calls only to locate a tom, not to attract one. Some other hunter might think you’re a turkey.

• Keep hands and head camou-

flaged when calling.

• Never carry or move an uncovered decoy.

Buyer – The Buyer is responsible for the use the tools and resources to negotiate and procure materials at the right time, cost, and quality to meet KNA standards. Specific duties include communication with vendors and internal customers to resolve supply chain challenges, identification and management of cost reduction projects and maintaining inventory to supply production demand. Parts Inventory Planner – The Parts Inventory Planner is responsible for the accurate planning, scheduling, and expediting of repair parts to satisfy current customer demand and anticipated demand by utilizing and maintaining electronic tools and product/process knowledge. Regular duties include review all system reports to determine appropriate action (order, expedite/de-expedite, cancel, transfer, maintain input data, etc.) based on inventory changes, demand, and projections, initiate parts expediting activities by communicating with appropriate Purchasing or Production/Inventory Control group, create and maintain item data and information (lead times, order multiples, min/max, etc.) in AS400 system to ensure the most accurate output, and review ECNs and implement data and inventory changes to align with engineering changes. A high school diploma or GED and experience working in an inventory control environment is required. Knowledge of and experience in the areas of customer service, inventory, logistics, agricultural equipment and intermediate computer skills (MS Word and Excel, ERP/AS400, Internet, and e-mail is preferred.

STEPHEN GOLOMBOWSKI Stephen H. Golombowski, 87 of Adams, Minnesota, died at his home surrounded by his family on Friday, April 20, 2018.

Stephen was born April 18, 1931 in Michigan City, Indiana to Stephen and Mary (Muzykiewicz) Golombowski. He served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1955. Steve married Colette Novak on October 27, 1956 in Michigan City. They farmed and raised their nine children in Westville, Indiana; Brodhead, Wisconsin and the Johnsburg, Minnesota area. In addition to farming, he also worked as a hail insurance adjustor and was a traveling salesman for TCM of Stacyville, Iowa.

He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Johnsburg and the Adams American Legion. Steve loved watching his kids’ and grandkids’ activities. He enjoyed road trips, family vacations and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his grandson, Jay Haraldson; and his son-in-law, Michael Finbraaten.
