The afternoon program will be “The Coffin Ships: Death on the Ocean Crossing and One Family’s Story” presented by Glenn Borreson, retired Lutheran pastor and presenter of Norwegian-American heritage programs. The program is about the Norwegian immigrant experience crossing the Atlantic on a “coffin ship” and specifically about one of Glenn’s ancestor families and their struggle to begin a new life in America. A Norwegian display will be provided by the Monroe Ostestaden Lodge of the Sons of Norway.

The GCGS Research Center (located in lower level of the Monroe Public Library) is available to the public for research. Research Center hours are: Tuesdays and third Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and first Saturday after the meeting from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Main holdings are on Green County.

Public invited to Multicultural Morning at BMS On behalf of the seventh grade students and staff at Brodhead Middle school, any and all are cordially invited to be a presenter at our annual “Multicultural Morning” on Thursday, May 3.

As it is nearly impossible to travel beyond the border of the USA with an entire class of seventh grade students, we coordinate this annual curriculum enrichment. If you have traveled beyond the USA at some point in your life for any reason: mission work, military, business, pleasure, etc. A 30-minute presentation of your experiences, photographs, souvenirs, and memories that chronicle your travels abroad would be a welcome get-away for a small group of seventh grade “travelers.”

We have the flexibility of scheduling speakers at 30-minute intervals beginning at 8:15 with the students dismissing for lunch at 11:15. We hope many

of you are available to speak to more than one group, therefore extending your time here to an hour or more. Students will attend three presentations, take a break for snacks from around the world (you are welcome to add a cultural treat if you like), and then attend two additional presentations. We are hopeful for lots of responses to this invitation, so our students can “travel” to lots of different destinations without even leaving Brodhead Middle School.

New Horizons 4-H wraps up busy spring

Members of New Horizons 4-H Club have been busy this past month. They have been doing acts of random kindness for the past three months. It feels good to help others out.

Besides these activities, members were busy selling pizza and doing other things.

Chance Ace does chores like keep his room clean, sweeps, and helps with animals. There are visits with grandma and family dinners on weekends. Dr. Seuss Day was fun. He went to the STEAM Fair at the Monroe High School and did a lot of things.

He had fun playing in the park.

Roxane Ace helps with dishes and the animals and uses the vacuum. She spends time with her “Big Sister.” Roxy goes to church. She enjoyed reading on Dr. Seuss Day. She registered for 4-H Mini Camp.

She is getting started with the dog project by taking Ruger to classes. They are learning together. The dogs and cat visited the vet. Roxane visits grandma and has family dinners on weekends. She learned what 4-H camp is about when she attended the mini camp held in mid March. She learned lots of things, did paintings, and made ooblec when she went to the STEAM Fair at Monroe High School. She had

fun playing at the park.

Addyson Brauer has started doing chores at home. She had fun decorating cupcakes at the 1-2-3-4 Decorate workshop put on by the Foods and Cloverbud Committees. She did a promotion poster for the Communications Contest. Her brother read to her class for Dr. Seuss Day. Addyson likes being a big help.

Jaydon Brauer has chores at home and helps when needed. He went to the 1-2-3-4 Decorate workshop because he is in the foods project.

He did a poster for the Communications Contest. He read on Dr. Seuss Day. Jaydon registered for 4-H Mini Camp and had fun at the event. He is looking forward to warm weather so he can help outside.

Maylee Brauer helps out a lot at home. She did a computer project for the Communications Contest and got a blue ribbon. She attended a junior leaders meeting. School keeps her busy.

Royce Brauer has been going to Confirmation. He enjoys doing activities with his “Big Couple.” His basketball season has finished and he is now involved in track practices and meets. He received a silver at the Math Meet and got 2nd place at a school win/loss tournament. He helped at a basketball tournament at Juda School. Royce entered the 4-H Communications Contest. His prose and demonstration got blue

placings.

His computer presentation received a red. He attended the junior leaders meeting and was liturgist at a Lent Service. Royce read to his sister’s class for Dr. Seuss Day. He turned in a camp staff application. He performed in the Last Blast Concert at school. Forensics is another one of his interests. He has worked his way to the state competition. Royce helped at 4-H Mini Camp and has been involved in camp counselor training. He helps out at home.

Shannon Day belongs to Girl Scouts. She has fun with their activities. She sold Girl Scout cookies. She does things with her “Big Sister” every week. They have fun.

She walks the dog and spends time with him so they get used to each other. She went to the dog kick off meeting and is starting the training classes. She went the 1-2-3-4 Decorate workshop. Shannon has playdates with friends and goes to church. She helps mom at home.

Ashlyn Hicks had play dates with friends and helps at home. She is busy with school and hangs out with Shannon a lot. She registered and went to 4-H Mini Camp where she found out what regular 4-H Camp is going to be like this summer. She is busy getting ready for her first county fair.

Attend Aging Advocacy Day May 16 Are you interested in issues affecting older adults?

Join members of the Wisconsin Aging Advocacy Network (WAAN) and others to help educate state legislators about issues impacting Wisconsin’s aging population.

Citizens from around the state will gather in Madison on Wednesday, May 16 for a day of advocacy training and meetings with legislators. No experience is necessary; you’ll get the training and support you need before meeting with state lawmakers. Following the training, join others from your state Senate and Assembly district to provide information and share personal stories with your legislators to help them understand how specific policy issues and proposals impact older constituents.

Aging Advocacy Day 2018 and WAAN’s state priority issues will focus on the role of Wisconsin’s aging network in supporting and enhancing resilience among older adults.

Justin Moore helps with household chores and helps take care of the animals. He visits with his dad every weekend, works on a derby car, and helps there. School keeps him busy. Justin went to the kick off meeting for the dog project and is going to classes with his dog so they can work together getting

ready for the fair. He works with the dogs every day.

Jude Myers is new to 4-H. He plans to show his dog for the dog project. He is busy in school and helps out at home.

Josh Ommodt is involved with the church youth group. He enjoys their many activities. He has been involved in middle school activities and helps at home. He is involved in the dog project.

Lillyanna Schmid helps at home and baby sits her siblings when her mom is busy. She belongs to Girl Scouts and does their activities.

She sold Girl Scout cookies. School keeps Lillyanna busy.

Mt. Hope Cemetery annual meeting next Monday

The annual meeting of the Mt. Hope Cemetery Association will be held Monday, April 23 at 7 p.m. at the Spring Grove Farm Town Hall, County Road GG, Brodhead.

DLMRA meeting set for next Saturday

The Decatur Lake Mill Race Association’s Annual Meeting will be held Saturday, April 28 from 9 a.m. to noon at Bank of Brodhead.

We will be providing updates on activities this past year, including the Sugar River Signage Project, looking for feedback on current activities, such as the DNR Decatur Lake Planning Grant, and upcoming activities such as the future plans for the Decatur Lake Golf Course, and ideas for the Fourth of July “Just for Fun Flotilla.”

Margin Protection Program informational meetings announced The Green County Farm Service Agency (FSA) Office is hosting two informational meetings regarding the updated 2018 Margin Protection Program (MPP) Coverage and new provisions. Meeting attendees will learn about the 2018 MPP options available to them.

The meetings will be Monday April 16, 2018 at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m.

2018 Herb Kohl Excellence Scholarship recipients Three Brodhead High School seniors were chosen to receive Herb Kohl Excellence Scholarships this year. 100 Excellence Scholarships are awarded in the state annually from public, private, and home school applicants, making this year an exceptional one for BHS. Excellence Scholars are chosen based on demonstrated academic excellence, outstanding leadership, citizenship, service, integrity, and other special talents. Students must also include an essay and three letters of recommendation.

Applications are judged at the CESA levels, with selected applications forwarded onto the state level for further judging.

Five Recognition Luncheons were scheduled across the state with our recipients being recognized at Monona Grove High School. Along with the scholarship recipients, selected teachers and principals received fellowships.

The luncheon included hors d’oeuvres, chamber music, lunch, a presentation from former Senator Herb Kohl, concluding with the awarding

of scholarships and fellowships. Sen. Kohl spoke of his own experience, growing up in a family where his parents emigrated from Poland and Russia to the United States, met in Milwaukee, and started a grocery store ‘smaller than a closet’ (Kohl’s Grocery Store). They taught their children that nothing was impossible with a good education.

The Kohl children all attended public schools in Milwaukee and then continued on to the University of Wisconsin. Kohl said that supporting a strong educational system and the educational endeavors of our youth are key to the future of Wisconsin and our nation. The Kohl Educational Foundation program was established by Herb Kohl in 1990. To date the foundation has provided $14.5 million to Wisconsin educators, students, and schools.

Each Excellence Scholar received a $10,000 scholarship, applicable to their college or university this fall.

Albany courting referendum

The Albany School Board meeting on April 9 featured Michael Hacker and Michael Johnson of Bray Architects setting up two focus groups for a proposed referendum. The first focus group of the two was held Monday, April 16, and the second will be held on Tuesday, May 15. The sessions will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the media room at the Albany school.

The sessions will discuss infrastructure and education evaluations. The infrastructure would

include parking, drop off and pickup, and mechanical and plumbing issues.

Some of the major proposals include moving the office, renovating the district lot and making it into a main parking lot, demolishing the 1922 building, relocating the kitchen, building a cafeteria with an adjacent community center, and updating the locker rooms.

Architect Michael Johnson said the overall cost would be $10.5 million, but if the project complet-

ed just the major items, it would cost around $5.5 million.

Phil Kubesh, Albany School Board treasurer, said that the board needs to get together to talk about this referendum. “We need to do a better job of controlling this project,” said Kubesh.

In 2004 the newly formed committee was able to award two $500, scholarships and last year, thanks to some donations, we were able to award $10,000.00 in scholarships.

We are now up to $66,000.00 since 2004, thanks to the tournament and the people who purchase ads on the back of our t-shirts. Last year 245 people were in attendance. The committee is thankful for all of the support we get.

SOFTBALL The Juda-Albany Panthers won their game against Pecatonica on Tuesday night 15-0 in 5 innings.

Albany Senior Hailey Freitag hit the team’s first home run of the season and had 5 RBIs. Victoria Euclide-Petig and Lydia Bouc went 2 for 3. Nicki Becker had a 2 hit shutout with 13 strikeouts. This was their first conference game and win. On Thursday night the Panthers faced Highland. In the first inning, Juda scored 3 runs and then scored 4 more runs in the 6th. The ending score was 7-0. Sammi Detra hit a solo home run in the 6th and had 3 RBIs. Nicki Becker went 2 for 3 at the plate and had a four-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts on the mound. The game against Assumption on Saturday was canceled due to extreme weather conditions.

TRACK The meet in Monroe on April 9 was canceled due to weather. This meet will not be rescheduled. The RVC Relays at Clinton was rescheduled to Saturday, April 14.

The next meet will be Tuesday, April 17, at home. The Jim Church Invite is at home on Friday, April 20.

Almanzo Friedly started the game pitching. On Thursday, April 12, the Cardinals traveled to Clinton and suffered a heartbreaking loss 4-5 on a walk-off stolen base. Luke Skoumal took the start on the mound. Leading hitters for the Cardinals was Almanzo Friedly, who finished with a double and two walks.

PROM Prom will be held on Saturday, May 5. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m. Grand March will begin at 8:30 p.m. The dance will go until 11 p.m., and Post Prom will begin at 12 a.m. and go until 3:30 a.m. If you’re bringing a date from a different school, do not forget to stop by the office and fill out a permission slip.

JUDA HILL CLIMB Up and coming is this year’s Juda Hill Climb, which is being organized by Spanish Club. It will be held on Saturday, May 19. The Kids Fun Run will begin at 9 a.m., and the 5k Run/2k Walk will begin at 9:30 a.m. One can register online at: bit.ly/judahillclimb2018. Come run for a purpose.

SPANISH CLUB This year, the Spanish Club will be organizing the Juda Hill Climb.

Registration cost is $25 before the race and $30 at the race. Registration will also guarantee a t-shirt.

On April 27, Spanish 3 and 4 classes are taking a lunch trip to Luna Maya. Students: Remember to bring your own money.

MUSIC DEPARTMENT State Solo and Ensemble will be held on Saturday, April 28, at UW Platteville.

MATH DEPARTMENT The geometry class has started to do actual 3D modeling in Google SketchUp. The houses that the class drew earlier this school year

they are now designing in SketchUp. They are putting in the house as well as normal fixtures and accessories such as doors, windows, and lights.

ART DEPARTMENT Last week the kindergarten class had a super fun art day, and the first graders started a new project. The second graders created a project of your choice, and the third graders finished their clay project. The fourth graders had a print day, and the fifth graders talked about immigration. The sixth graders worked with stained glass, and the middle school rotation class talked about negative and positive space. The high schoolers finished their project and had a critique day.

FFA Officer applications were turned in by students interested in being an FFA Officer for 2018-2019. The new officer team will be announced shortly.

FFA BANQUET The annual FFA banquet is coming up shortly. The banquet is on April 22, and it will be held in the school. The banquet hall will open at 1:00, and the ceremony will begin at 2:00. The food will be available at 1:00. The banquet will include awards ceremonies for FFA members who have participated in events throughout the year. The FFA hopes to see you there.

NHS The National Honor Society is looking for community projects for Pride Day. Please email Mrs. Way at way@judaschool.com if you have any spring projects you would like help with!

SWISS COLONY CAREER FAIR The senior class visited the Swiss Colony Career Fair on Friday, April 6. The students were educated on all of the career and internship opportunities that Colony Brands offers. All of the students who attended will receive a $350 scholar-

ship with the exception of Nickole Becker, who was drawn to receive a $1000 scholarship.

HVAC CONVENTION On Monday, April 9, and Tuesday, April 10, Lennox put on an HVAC convention in the Wisconsin Dells. They held seminars and presentations on the latest technologies and techniques in HVAC. Students who attended the HVAC convention were Jayson Star, Alex Nusbaum, and Erik Bennet, and they were able to participate in seminars and see the new technologies and techniques in HVAC. BUSINESS AND MARKETING FIELD TRIP Students from Mr. Pickett’s Business and Marketing classes took a field to Milwaukee last Monday. They toured Miller Park and the BMO Harris Bradley Center.

They received a presentation from the Bucks staff about sponsorship, marketing, sales, game operations, and careers within the Bucks organization. After the tour of the BMO Harris Bradley Center, the students had dinner and watched the Bucks beat the Orlando Magic.

6 RIVERS SPORTSMANSHIP SUMMIT On Tuesday, April 10, five Juda High School students traveled to Barneveld for a summit on both leadership and sportsmanship and how they coincide. Students who attended the summit were Quinton Kammerer, Trent Anderson, Taylor Golackson, Hannah Powers, and Montana Steinman. Students participated in many different activities and learned about the importance of leadership and sportsmanship in the community.

ELEMENTARY NEWS On Monday, April 16, swimming lessons started. Wednesday, April 25, is the 4th/5th-grade science fair.

CHEESE DAYS PRINCE AND PRINCESS CONTEST The 2018 Green County Cheese Days Prince & Princess Contest will be held on June 2, 2018. To qualify, one must be 6 years old by Friday, September 14, 2018, and not older than 9 by Sunday, September 16, 2018, and must be a Green County resident. A parent or guardian also must accompany the child to all events as well as provide transportation to and from all events. Judging will be held from 8 to 11 a.m., and the awards ceremony will be held at noon. Applications can be found at www. cheesedays.com or can be found in the Juda School District office. FORENSICS State Forensics will be held on Friday, April 20. The students participating at state are Nicki Becker and Mariah Riese, group interp; Hailey Kammerer, Quinton Kammerer, and Trent Davis, play acting; Royce Brauer, pros; Jacob Mahlkuch, storytelling; and Samantha Anderson, solo acting.

Nurturing legacies framed in volunteer service to children

On the main road through Kissidougou’s Korodou quarter one April morning, I sat waiting for bread.

Louis, the Kissi proprietor of the boutique whose daily quota of baguettes is tardy, is apologetic and nervous. He doesn’t want to lose even a sporadic customer, especially this old white guy from America who teases him.

“Which numbered French king are you, Louis?”and “Where is the lovely queen? There must be a queen!”

Kissi people are of Guinea’s vast tropical forest culture. Many adopted Christian faith and teachings, which the French surely first brought here.

Forest culture, however, is expressed in their language, in percussive instruments, gentle but ardent. They’re given, too, Biblical, or at least Catholic, to French surnames.

When I stop my Trek bicycle commute at Louis’ tiny shop, I buy 10,000 francs of Laughing Cow cheese. I add a 5,000 franc tin of sardines. Often, then, I must await the 2,000 francs worth of warm Frenchstyle bread.

Guineans in a distant quarter of Kissidougou’s 100,000 population labored over wood-fired ovens through the night to bake this bread.

It is worth the wait.

I’ve never witnessed any other transaction with Louis’ neighbors even a third the amount I spend. In my American money, I’ve actually spent less than $2. In shame at how much I can consume even as a volunteer on a limited living allowance, I usually pay some child’s bill – for fruit juice, or peanuts, whatever – as I wait.

I realize my silence this morning has Louis worried I’m going to bolt back onto my bike. He fears I’ll continue the final miles toward my little office in the UN World Food Programme compound out in the forest remnant.

I let him dust off a wooden bench on the covered porch of the string of boutiques. I sit down in the morning shadows, to reassure him. Yet I can’t bring myself to jolly smiles out of him this morning.

I feel a certain loyalty and resolve to Louis. I feel that to almost all Africans with whom I’ve transacted in 40 years of sporadic work and volunteering in their homelands.

I accept what almost all of Guinea, West Africa, most of the world’s 7 billion people now, too, must accept.

Conditions extended to much of life leave us simply no choice but to wait for whatever daily bread is coming our way.

Much of the forced situation, though, sets my mind to thinking, brooding, as I have these two-thirds of my life. It’s a dark uncertainty I feel for my legacy, the world’s legacy, to so many African people, especially African children.

Streaming silently past the shop, on both sides of the street, are thousands of children of all ages this morning, every morning of the school year.

Light brown dresses and pant-shirt complements follow into secondary school. White shirts and blouses on blue trousers and skirts finish the grades before university classes, however few actually advance that far in education.

Not a single child or teen is overweight. Sometimes I do note painfully thin ankles or wrists emerging from clothing, though. Every gait is nonetheless steady, often almost urgent. Every back erect from years already of balancing water buckets, bundles of wood, sacks of whatever is commanded to be carried upon their heads – when they’re not in school.

Do they realize in that urgent, collective movement how uncertain lies their future, their destiny?

I stifle a sob. I recall the 250 students I taught in Senegal 40 years be-

fore this moment in volunteer service again in Guinea. Where are those teens who worked so hard in my English classes, 1975 to 1977?

For a moment, I wish I had a fraction Donald Trump’s resources to afford the time and expense to scour Senegal in search of those “kids” who must be approaching my 60 years in age now – if they are still alive.

We were actually so very close in age, those secondary school children and their only white teacher. I graduated college early and went straight to Peace Corps training in Dakar.

Eight weeks later, I was assigned their school in Tambacounda.

Among the mostly Kissi facial features this morning, I discern also Malinke and Peul. These are cousins of the savannah and desert ethnic Bambara and Toucouleur people, whose children I taught my first Peace Corps service 40 years ago.

More often Muslim, they’ve always impressed me as being disciplined and reserved. I wonder if the drier, hotter, harsher expanses of ever-advancing desert influence them so. Different cadences, in speech as well as song. Different instruments and movements from other African ethnicities.

West Africa’s vast bush and desert landscapes – across a landmass the size of the United States – give way gradually across Guinea to the tropics. The farther south one travels, everything, everyone changes.

Kissidougou’s main highway south to Gueckedou, winds into a range of small mountains. Palms towering above mango and banana groves shower out greetings like

green fireworks. Forests now, with the desert fringes of years ago, linger long in my mind.

This morning, however, my thoughts are of my end of service, of having to say good-byes. In just 2 weeks, my own destiny will carry me the other direction, north and west, the 12-hour trip back to Conakry, the end again of Peace Corps service.

Each time I leave Africa, a part of me dies. I feel a good work being taken from my hands. I feel a great loss from so many rich cultural and ethnic contributions to my character. I’m a better human being from them. How will I keep nurturing those qualities without them?

Columns of the porch framing my view of the throngs of children streaming by, carry me back to that first end of service in Dakar. I was seated in a Lebanese sandwich shop, brooding absent-mindedly about the unsure future of students I loved through 2 years of teaching. I was feeling lost and alone in a huge foreign world.

Suddenly a little girl came into view out of crowds passing before the open wall of the shop. Smartly, deliberately marching along with purpose, she was towing along a baby sister.

The older little girl turned and looked at me as she made her way with her charge across my view.

Seconds passed. Just before that lovely little Senegalese girl disappeared from sight, she winked at me.

A warm, satisfying feeling of fresh communion bread spread over my being.

I felt embraced of a child of God. My heart lifted out of darkness.

Brodhead Park & Rec youth soccer

The Brodhead Parks and Recreation Department will be sponsoring a 4 week youth soccer program for boys and girls in 4K – 5th grades. The program will meet on Saturday mornings south west of the High School by the football practice field beginning Saturday, April 28 and ending May 19.

This program is for children at all skill levels and it will teach basic skills and fundamentals with a scrimmage each week. 4K and 5K will play at 9: a.m. – 9:45 a.m.; 1st – 5th grade will play from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m.

Forms are available at the elementary school, the Brodhead Parks and Recreation Department or on the City of Brodhead Website. The cost is $20, which includes a T-shirt.

Forms need to be completed and turned in with the fee by Friday, April 27 to the office or Rec Department. Children are encouraged to wear tennis shoes and shin guards.

Brodhead High School sends juniors to Badger State

Members of the Class of 2019 have been chosen to represent Brodhead High School at Badger Girls State and Badger Boys State this June. Badger State is a hands-on participatory government/leadership seminar where selected students come together to form a 51st state.

During the weeklong seminar, students participate in all levels government, running for offices, and collaborating together.

It is a tremendous opportunity for students to learn how our state and local community operates, and become well-informed citizens.

Free Pickle Ball lessons offered Brodhead Pickle Ball players will be teaching the skills and strategies of the game to all interested. Pickle ball teaching will be 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday nights at the Brodhead Middle School starting April 15, 22 and 29.

Have you wondered if it’s something you should try? Beekeeping and gardening seem to go naturally together. Raising bees can be a fun and rewarding hobby,

however, it also requires planning and knowledge. Bees are a natural pollinator and currently are a very hot topic for people to try.

The Green County Master Gardeners will be holding their

Brodhead Gardening Club offering scholarship Once again, the Brodhead Garden Club is offering a scholarship to a graduating senior who is continuing their education in the fields of horticulture, plant science, landscaping or turf science. Students of Brodhead, Albany, Juda, Orfordville, and qualified home school applicants, are eligible to apply. If interested, please contact your school guidance counselor for more information. Students may attend a four-year, two-year or technical school.

The Brodhead Garden Club was established in 1932 and has been meeting continuously since that time. This scholarship has been offered each year since 2006. Other projects performed by the Garden Club are herbal plantings, the annual Covered Bridge Flowers Show, and the flowers decorating the band shell during the Concert in the Park.

Kaderly will be working with a “live” hive explaining the equipment he wears to be safe when working with the hive. He will also show the equipment needed for bees and how they use that equipment. Sam will try to locate the “queen” in his hive and discuss her importance as well as the other bees (the brood) within the hive. Harvesting honey from the hive will also be discussed and

demonstrated if possible.

The Green County Wisconsin Master Gardeners Association was formed in Green County in 2004 to provide Master Gardeners with opportunities for professional development and community service.

This past year members of the association volunteered 177 hours of community education and 1976 hours in community service projects in Green County.

Master Gardener Volunteers also assist the UW-Extension Office in responding to horticulture questions.

The Green County Master Gardeners Association meets on the

fourth Thursday of the month from February through October.

Meetings usually include speakers or tours for learning and are open to the public to attend.

Association officers for 2018 will include Rae Wellnitz, President; Tanna McKeon, Vice President; Kristi Leonard, Secretary; and Lynn Lokken as Treasurer.

Governor Scott Walker declared last week as Wisconsin’s Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week. Tanna McKeon, Director of Green County Emergency Management urges schools, businesses, families, and individuals to take advantage of this time to test their emergency plans.

The statewide tornado drills were conducted last Thursday. A mock tornado watch was issued at 1 p.m. followed by a mock tornado warning at 1:45 p.m. A mock tornado warning was be conducted at 6:45 p.m. to give families and second shift workers a chance to test their emergency plans.

Some area municipalities tested their warning sirens and many radio and TV stations across the state will issue the test tornado warnings. In addition, mock alerts were issued on NOAA Weather Radios too. Be sure your weather radio is turned on for this test. If the alarm on your weather radio did not go off for this test, check your weather radio’s programming and quality of reception.

Last year, there were 23 tornado touchdowns in the state, which is average for the state. While most were either EF0 or EF1, the state did record an EF3 on May 16,2017. The tornado followed an 83-mile path

across Polk, Barron, Rusk, and Price counties, killing one person and causing widespread damage. On June 28, 2018 two EF1 tornadoes caused extensive damage north of Monroe.

By taking immediate cover after receiving the tornado warning on his cell phone, one couple narrowly missed being seriously injured when their home was extensively damaged by the tornado.

According to the National Weather Service that tornado had winds up to 105 mph, travelled for 2.1 miles and was 300 feet wide.

The Green County Humane Society released the following tips to help prepare your pet for the spring • Get back on track with preventative care. Heartworm and flea and tick prevention is important all year; however, it is especially important during the warmer seasons as mosquitos, fleas, and ticks are more active.

• Talk to your vet today about how to prevent heartworm and how to keep fleas and ticks off of your pets.

Watch out for allergies. Pets, like people, can suffer from seasonal allergies.

• With grasses, flowers, and trees in bloom, you might see your pet scratching a bit more. Your vet can help diagnose and treat your pet’s allergies if you feel allergies are the culprit to your pet’s irritating itch.

• Lose the winter weight. Activity levels change during the colder months, and pets tend to gain a bit of extra weight. Get out in the fresh air, but start exercise slowly to avoid any strains or injuries.

• Get your pet microchipped. With pets spending

more time in the outdoors comes more risk of getting lost. Pets with a microchip can find their way home much quicker than pets without.

Rock County Community Garden rental plots still available There are still garden plots available for the 2018 season at the Rock County Community Garden.

State officials announce removal of Kirtland’s Earth Week at warbler from federal endangered species list Albrecht Elementary The removal of Kirtland’s warbler from the federal endangered species list on April 12 is another great conservation comeback story, and Wisconsin will continue its efforts to grow the tiny songbird’s population.

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service announced earlier this week its plans to remove Kirtland’s Warbler from the federal list of threatened and endangered species. The USFWS has determined that the species has clearly met recovery goals following years of intensive habitat management, mostly in lower Michigan where the core population is found.

The species’ numbers in Wisconsin don’t yet meet the criteria to be removed from the state’s endangered species list. However, Wisconsin continues to be active in conservation efforts for the species which began when it was first documented breeding here 10 years ago.

“This is a huge milestone for the overall recovery of this bird, and we will continue our work to increase the Wisconsin population,” says Drew Feldkirchner, who directs the Department of Natural Resources Natural Heritage Conservation Program.

“Decades of commitment and hard work through public and private partnerships in Michigan have paid off, and we are also proud of the work our Wisconsin partners have done to increase our small but growing population.”

National recovery team leaders believe the Wisconsin population provides an important backstop to the core Michigan population and that newly established breeding areas on public land in northern Wisconsin will be important as hotter, drier conditions affect the warblers’ food supply at breeding sites in Wisconsin and Michigan at lower latitudes.

Wisconsin’s population has grown from only 11 Kirtland’s warblers and three nests documented in 2007 to 53 birds and 20 total nests in 2017. Importantly, the population has grown

and its range has expanded from Adams County to also include Marinette and Bayfield counties. The birds fledged a minimum of 49 and up to 63 young in 2017.

“Kirtland’s are responding to a decade of conservation work from dedicated partners and the numbers of individuals and nests in Wisconsin continue to increase,” says Kim Grveles, the Department of Natural Resources conservation biologist who led Kirtland’s warbler efforts in Wisconsin for the past decade.

“We’re very encouraged by results of recent years and look forward to contributing more birds to the overall population in coming years,” she says.

The Kirtland’s warbler was placed on the federal endangered species list about 40 years ago, when its Michigan population dropped to about 300 birds due to habitat loss and nest predation from brown-headed cowbirds.

Starting in the late 1990s, the protections and efforts made under the federal Endangered Species Act enabled the Kirtland’s warbler to start expanding its breeding territory to Wisconsin, Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and Ontario. The first nest was confirmed in Wisconsin in 2007.

To help increase Kirtland’s war-

blers in Wisconsin, DNR, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and other partners now conduct annual surveys in seven counties to listen and look for the birds, monitor nests in Adams County and Marinette County where breeding sites have been found, and set traps to keep cowbirds away from the warblers’ nests.

The partners are also working to maintain and expand the mix of 5- to 20-year-old jack pine trees and barrens to provide quality habitat for Kirtland’s warblers and other species, says Grveles.

In 2017, DNR planted a 125-acre jack pine stand near the Brule River in Douglas County. Also, Bayfield County Forest and Marinette County Forest continued their habitat management efforts that benefit Kirtland’s warblers.

In addition to those county forests, DNR and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, other partners and collaborators include the University of Wisconsin, Wisconsin Natural Resources Foundation, USDA Wildlife Services, Sand Valley Restoration LLC, Meteor Timber, the Wisconsin Trapshooting Association, Bayfield, Marinette, Vilas, and Jackson County Forest Departments, and many birders and other private citizens.

Sheep and goat weigh-in set for Sat., April 21

An identification program for all market lambs and goats to be exhibited at the 2018 Green County Fair will be conducted on Saturday, April 21st, at the Green County Fairgrounds in Monroe. Market lambs and goats will be weighed and identified between 9-11AM in the south end of the show barn.

Only market lambs and goats that are identified on this date will be eligible for exhibition in the market lamb and goat classes and to sell at the Green County Fair Meat Animal Auction.

All market lambs and goats that will be shown at the Green County Fair will be weighed and given RFID ear tags. Each exhibitor can identify a maximum of 5 animals

of each species. Market lambs being identified for the Green County Fair can weigh no more than 105 pounds at the weigh-in on April 21st. There is no minimum weight for lambs; however, it is suggested that lambs weigh at least 50 pounds or more in order to make the 110-pound minimum weight at fair time that is needed to sell in the auction. There are no minimum or maximum weights for market goats on the 21st, however, market goats do need to weigh a minimum of 45 pounds at fair to be eligible to sell in the auction.

All performance lambs are required to weigh in and be identified for the performance competition at this weigh in also. Performance lambs

will no longer be harvested and will be allowed to exhibit in both the performance class and the lamb market classes. There is no minimum weight for the weigh in, however, lambs must weigh at least 115 lbs to participate in the performance competition at the fair. Overall performance lamb placing will be based on 60% carcass and 40% rate of gain.

Since the market lambs and goats will be tagged with official USDA tags they will not need to have scrapie tags at the fair. However, exhibitors are reminded that all breeding sheep and goats will still be required to have a USDA Scrapie tag before the animals are allowed onto the fairgrounds this summer. The only excep-

tion to this is for breeding animals that have breed registration papers and a breed tattoo. If exhibitors plan to exhibit breeding stock they can order their own free scrapie tags by calling 1-866-873-2824.

Only Green County Fair market lambs and goats need to be pre-identified at this weigh-in on the 21st. Animals that will be exhibited in the sheep or goat breeding show classes at the fair are not required to attend the weigh-in.

Auction record books and other show information will also be distributed to exhibitors at the identification day. Contact the Green County UW-Extension office at 608-328-9440 for more information.

Green Cares Food Pantry releases 2017 Annual Report The Green Cares Food Pantry Board of Directors recently released the pantry’s 2017 Annual Report. Here’s some data on how many households and individuals were served: 555 unduplicated households served; total households served in 2017 was 3,173.

• 307 (56%) have one or more household members working • 200 (36%) have one or more household members receiving Social Security and/or SSI benefits.

• 20 (3.6%) reported no income.

served; total individuals served was 9,611 • 386 (22%) consider themselves disabled.

• 1556 (89%) had health coverage.

• 662 (38%) were children.

• 78 (4%) were age 70 or older.

• 228 (13%) were between the age of 55 and 69.

The Green Cares Food Pantry, a volunteer-managed pantry, is dedicated to providing for the needs of food insecure Green County households by collecting, purchasing, and distributing food and grocery products, along with educating the community about hunger and food insecurity, and collaborating with others who address basic human needs. Pantry households receive healthy and nutritious foods while volunteers provide a friendly, non-judgmental environment, connecting these households to employment opportunities, community resources, non-profit

programming, government benefits, and advocacy services to improve the economic condition of the household. Green Cares has a basic belief – no one should be hungry. During 2017, nearly 200 Green Cares volunteers donated 5,200 hours to insure all those in need had access to food.

Also, the Green Cares Board is happy to report an expansion of pantry services. In March 2018 through a collaboration between the Green Cares Board, Green County Leaders, and the Monticello School District, the Pony Pack Program (PPP) was started. The PPP confidentially provides at risk Monticello students, grades 4K – 5th, with nutritious foods to take home for the weekend. This pilot project is

one the Green Cares Board hopes to replicate in other school districts.

Green Cares receives no government funding; the pantry is reliant on your support. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill; daughter Jan Williams, and two brothers, Kenneth and Ronald Shrier.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Brodhead on Saturday, April 14, 2018, with Pastor David Frey officiating.

Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery, Brodhead.

The family would like to give a special thanks to the Wood Crossing Staff for the wonderful care they provided our Mom. You made it feel like home.

Obituaries BETTY MALCOOK Elizabeth “Betty” Malcook, age 91, passed away on Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at Woods Crossing in Brodhead where she was a resident for over three years.

She was born on October 20, 1926 in Morrison, Ill., the daughter of Earl and Mildred (Larson) Shrier. She moved to Wisconsin when she was a young girl and graduated from Brodhead High School in 1944. Betty was Junior Class Prom Queen.

Betty was married to Floyd “Bill” Malcook on October 12, 1945. They farmed in Decatur Township all of their lives until retiring in 1977. Betty worked all of her life on the farm and raised her family.

In her later years, she knit, crocheted and completed word searches to occupy her time, and was famous for her nylon net scrubbies she made for people to enjoy.

KIETH PINNOW Kieth W. Pinnow age 67 died Wednesday April 11, 2018 at Beloit Memorial Hospital. He was born March 18, 1951 the son of Alfred and Dorothy (Brager) Pinnow in Brodhead, WI. Kieth was employed at Kandu Industries in Janesville for the last 51 years.

He enjoyed bowling, watching old movies, traveling and visiting with friends. Kieth was a longtime competitor in Special Olympics, where he excelled in bowling. He participated in Fishing has No Boundaries for the last 17 years. Kieth will be remembered for his beautiful blue eyes, soft smile and how he loved meatloaf and ice cream.

He is survived by his father, Alfred Pinnow, his two brothers, Dale Pinnow and Alan Pinnow; his sister, Theresa (Jack) Prins; his sister in law, Jan Pinnow; his niece, Nicole Pinnow and his nephews, Bryan Pinnow, and Ryan and Brad Cartwright; and special friends, Susan, Bill and Sarah Eler.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy, his brother, Michael Pinnow and his infant brother, William Charles Pinnow.

The family would like to thank the Dungarvin employees for the wonderful care over the years.
