Health survey helps determine priorities

Green County Public Health, Monroe Clinic and Green County Healthy Community Coalition, a collaborative group that works to define health resources and needs in the community, are working together to administer the Community Health Needs Assessment for 2021.

The survey, completed once every three years, is used to help determine what health issues should be top priority in the county. The survey can be found on the coalition’s website at greencohcc.org.

The survey takes 10 to 15 minutes to complete and asks questions about community job opportunities, inclusivity and food availability.

“The results from the needs assessment will then be translated to our Community Health Improvement Plan, or CHIP,” said Bridget Craker, public health educator for Green County Public Health Department. “This is our coalition’s plan to address the health needs that were identified through our assessment. This CHIP will guide our coalition’s work for the next three years.

“Depending on what these health needs are, programming to address the needs will be determined.”

Programming includes additional health care education, presentations and initiatives. The organization is still working to achieve its

goals for the issue areas addressed by the 2018 CHNA survey.

“Our current health priorities are mental health, substance misuse, increased Tammie Jamiska physical activity, food security and breastfeeding,” said Tammie Jamiska, community benefit educator for Monroe Clinic. “We have workgroups for all priorities.”

These workgroups have added initiatives to increase food access, add a new nutrition campaign to local schools, reduce opioid overdoses from 22 per year to 16 per year and implement mental health service programs through the Monroe Clinic.

Based on the results from the 2021 survey, the GCHCC will continue to administer these programs and give presentations for the new issue areas. More information will be available after the results are processed.

The Brodhead Parks and Recreation Department will be sponsoring two, three-week dodgeball programs for children in fourth and fifth grades. The program will meet from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays at Albrecht Elementary School.

Obituary State adopts updated CDC quarantine guidance The U.S Centers for Disease Control and Wisconsin Department of Health Services have issued modified public health recommendations for people who have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19.

Provided that certain criteria are met, it is no longer required for vaccinated persons to quarantine following close contact with a person diagnosed with COVID-19.

Wisconsin DHS endorses and supports adoption of this new standard for quarantine guidance and continues to emphasize that all Wisconsin residents should follow current guidance for stopping the spread of COVID-19, even after they are vaccinated. This includes wearing masks in public, avoiding large gatherings, staying 6 feet away from others, and following all other applicable workplace or school guidance.

Because data about the duration of vaccine-induced protection are still accumulating, the duration of quarantine exemption for vaccinated persons is currently limited to the 90 days after receiving the last dose in a vaccine series.

On Feb. 10, CDC issued updated quarantine guidance for vaccinated persons, specifying that fully vaccinated people who meet certain criteria will no longer be required to quarantine following an exposure to someone with COVID-19. DHS has adopted those guidelines as of February 12th, 2021.

Specifically, vaccinated people with an exposure to

someone with COVID-19 are not required to quarantine if they meet all of the following criteria: • Are fully vaccinated (i.e., exposure occurs two weeks or more following receipt of the second dose in a 2-dose series, or two weeks or more following receipt of one dose of a single-dose vaccine); • Are within 90 days following receipt of the last dose in the series; and • Have remained asymptomatic since the current COVID-19 exposure All people who have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 should monitor themselves for symptoms for 14 days after the last date of exposure, and should be evaluated clinically and get tested if they develop any symptoms of COVID-19.

If vaccinated people do develop symptoms, they should be isolated pending the results of testing, in accordance with current recommendations.

Exceptions to the new quarantine recommendation exist for patients receiving inpatient care in a healthcare setting, and residents of long-term care facilities. Patients and residents in these settings should continue to follow prior guidance requiring quarantine for 14 days after the date of last exposure. This exception is because of the higher risk of severe illness and death among patients in these settings.

LOIS M. HARVEY Lois M. Harvey, age 85, of Brodhead, passed away Feb. 21, 2021, at Collinwood Memory Care after her long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Lois was born Nov. 22, 1935, in Clay County, Illinois, the daughter of Sharon and Rachel (Mascher) Crouse. She graduated from Newton High School and then was introduced to the love of her life, John L. Harvey; they were married on June 12, 1954.

They started their farming life together in Jasper County, Illinois, until 1963, when they moved to Orfordville, Wisconsin, to continue dairy farming. In 1971, they moved to their current farm in rural Brodhead. She was a highly active farm wife in the daily farm operations and spent many hours on a tractor. When she was not on a tractor in the fields, she could be found working in the garden preparing for the upcoming canning season. In her free time, her and John enjoyed bowling, snowmobiling, Saturday night dances and golfing (Lois more so than John).

Lois is survived by her husband of 66 years, John; and three daughters, Rosemary S. Olson (Monte Ortman) of Stoughton, Wisconsin, Diane L. Sedbrook (Terry) of Brodhead and Gerri Jo Harvey (Chris Olson) of Juda. She is further survived by seven grandchildren, Michael Olson (Jamie) of Brodhead, Chantel Malkow of Brodhead, Georgia Grossen (Mark) of Janesville, Tyler Sedbrook of Sun Prairie, Court-

ney Sedbrook of Juda, Casey Gunser of Argyle and Jordan Gunser (Liz) of South Wayne; eight great-grandchildren, Chesnie, Chase and Channing Wilhite of Brodhead, Ella and Isaac Olson of Brodhead, Garrett and Everett Grossen of Janesville and Jaxson Lee Gunser of South Wayne; two brothers, Maynard and Ray (Sherry) Crouse; and two sisters, Joann Cook Galloway and Patti Williams, all of Illinois; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Sharon and Rachel Crouse; and two brothersin-law and a sister-in-law.

Due to COVID 19, cremation rites will be accorded and private family services will be held.

The family wishes to thank the loving and kind staff of Collinwood Memory Care who were by Lois’ side caring for her during her illness. Thank you to Agrace Hospice during this trying time.

Albany girls celebrate a great run CORRESPONDENT

The Albany girls varsity basketball squad took the court by storm in 2021. After finishing the regular season with a record of 16-2 and finishing in second place In the Six Rivers-East Conference, Albany found themselves ranked as one of the top Division 5 teams in Wisconsin. After defying the odds and completing one of the best regular seasons in school history, this 2021 Albany squad knew they had an opportunity to go on a run, and they were up for the challenge.

The squad caught fire from the start, beginning their season on an eight-game winning streak. It was the winning streak to close out their regular season that stands out, however, as the Comets were able to go on a five-game streak that had all the momentum swinging their way as the team approached the postseason.

Albany became a scary opponent for any D5 team as they were hot at the right time and had the tools to make a deep run.

Albany head coach Derik Doescher talked recently about what made this year’s team so special “Since the first day of practice our motto was ‘All In.’ We constantly talked about everyone doing their part, whether it be on the court or off with the COVID situation to make sure we could have a safe season,” Doescher said. “All of the girls bought in to make sure that we were able to stay safe and healthy.”

This team handled business in all aspects of the game and their strong relationship as teammates and friends played a role, Doescher said.

“On the court, each player accepted their role and did it to the best of their ability to solidify the team motto of ‘All In.’ This team was on a mission throughout the year to be really good and they had a unique bond on and off the court.”

The team put their strength on display during the 2021 postseason, starting with a dominant, first-round regional win over Catholic Central.

After dominating the first half, the Comets were able to coast toward a 67-51 victory, ensuring their season would not come to an end. Scoring leader Brianna Dahl finished the

game with 20 points, while Gracie Freitag had 12. Together, the duo helped ensure that Catholic Central would never come close.

The Comets’ momentum carried into the second round of regionals, when they faced off with a familiar opponent in the Barneveld Eagles, a team they had defeated just a week prior. Albany was able to complete the clean sweep of the Eagles. After beating them twice in the regular season, the Comets delivered the final blow with a 48-34 victory in the playoffs, making them regional champs.

Now riding a seven-game winning streak, the Comets found themselves in an unfamiliar position as they entered sectionals play. On Feb. 18, Albany faced off with a 13-6 Rio team in the opening round of sectionals.

The Comets were able to establish an eight-point lead as they went into the halftime break up 29-21. Those eight points would prove to be the difference as Albany was able to hold Rio off on their way to a 56-48 sectional victory.

Dahl had one of her best games of the season, providing a majority of the Comets’ offense with 29 points coming off a trio of three-pointers and shooting six of seven from the free-throw line.

Dahl’s offensive explosion helped propel the Comets into one of the biggest games in school history.

On Feb. 20, the Comets found themselves with a bit of familiarity in such a high-stakes game like a sectional final. The Six Rivers-East Conference carried some of the most talented Division 5 teams in the state in 2021, which led to conference opponents Albany and Black Hawk facing off in this year’s sectional final.

Unfortunately, Black Hawk held the upper hand over the Comets during the regular season, as they were the only team to finish above Albany in the conference standings.

Having already lost to the Warriors twice, Albany was hungry for revenge in a game that held much more importance than their regular season matchups.

Black Hawk appeared to be the comfortable team from the tip, however. Albany fell to a 34-18 deficit as they went into the half, a gap they

would be unable to make up for in the second. The Warriors’ defense did a good job of locking down Albany’s offensive threats as the Comets eventually fell by a score of 55-39.

It was nothing to hang their heads about, though, as Doescher and his squad knew they had done something very special. After closing out one of the best basketball seasons in school history, the ending may not have been what they desired, but it

Zoom meeting set for Students sought for Youth CROP walk organizers Conservation Congress

The Janesville Area CROP Hunger Walk has scheduled a virtual meeting for team captains via Zoom at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 7.

Captains will receive information about recruiting team members and raising money for the walk, scheduled for Sunday, April 25. To join the virtual meeting, RSVP by calling 608-752-8117 or emailing janesvillecropwalk@charter.net. A link to the Zoom meeting will then be provided.

Instead of gathering together as a large group, this year’s participants will walk in small groups because of the need for social distancing.

Organizers hope to raise $50,000, with 25 percent staying local and the remaining funds going to Church World Service, a faithbased organization that fights hunger and poverty in communities around the world.

Wisconsin students interested in the outdoors are invited to join the Youth Conservation Congress. The statewide youth program is designed to grow and develop future conservation leaders across the state.

The Youth Conservation Congress is a student extension of the Wisconsin Conservation Congress.

The purpose of YCC is to give young people a voice and instill a sense of ownership, civic pride and advocacy for Wisconsin’s natural resources. The YCC strives to effectively engage, educate, and involve youth in the management and protection of our natural resources and foster a conservation ethic through participation in the program.

The YCC program offers opportunities for students from all backgrounds, including seasoned outdoor enthusiasts and novices alike.

Although the program is best suited for high school students, younger individuals are welcome to apply.

YCC student delegates are exposed to various aspects of natural resource management and have access to professionals in those fields.

Students also receive real-world experience through a variety of service-learning opportunities.

By joining, members gain an understanding of the process for how Wisconsin’s natural resource policy is determined, including the role and history of the Wisconsin Conservation Congress – the state’s statutorily recognized citizen advisory body.

Hammiller will be attending the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point next fall and has already connected with school staff as well as natural resource leaders in the state due to her involvement with the YCC.

“The YCC really allows you to explore options for your future and network across the entire state with adult and youth delegates and DNR personnel along with other agencies and conservation groups,” she said.

The YCC program mirrors the Conservation Congress’s focus on county level initiatives. County Congress members serve as mentors and as a point of local contact for the YCC delegates. Doescher shared his thoughts on losing their three seniors in Lily Brewer, Ashley Letcher and Jada Flannery, and how tough it can be to replace that as a team.

Brewer was “one of two players to start all 22 games this season, the other being Brianna Dahl,” said Doescher, who described Brewer as “just a consistent player that showed great leadership all the time. Lily did things fundamentally sound and

always led by example.”

On Letcher, Doescher said, “Great young lady that understood her role on the team and gave 100% all the time. She is proof that being a great teammate is as important as being a great player.”

Finally, Doescher complimented Flannery, saying she is an “impactful player in the post. She showcased her talents in a variety of ways throughout the season.”

Together, the trio of seniors put on a display of leadership that will

hopefully keep things trending up for the Albany girls’ basketball program.

“With that being said, our seniors have set the bar high for the next group. We return a lot of experience and depth to the varsity team next year (which) should result in some exciting times for Albany Lady Comets basketball.

“We will celebrate this past season and the great journey it was, but we also look forward to a very exciting future.”

• Avoid large meals, caffeine, nicotine and alcohol before bedtime.

• Get some exercise. Being physically active during the day can help you fall asleep more easily at night. Stress-relieving exercises such as yoga or tai chi can be especially helpful.

• If you can’t sleep, don’t lie awake in bed. Get up and try some relaxing activities like meditation or listening to calming music.

If your sleep issues are ongoing, consult your doctor. You may have a sleep disorder that can be treated.

There are ways to improve sleep that don’t rely on medication. Don’t let “coronasomnia” get the best of you; take the steps needed to get a good night’s sleep.

Blackhawk Technical College second-year culinary students prepare food for a community organization. The culinary program recently was recognized as “exemplary” by its accrediting body.

Blackhawk Tech culinary arts program gains highest honor The culinary arts program at Blackhawk Technical College recently earned the highest honor from its accrediting body, the American Culinary Federation Education Foundation Accrediting Commission.

According to ACFEFAC, “exemplary” programs such as BTC’s “symbolize the highest educational standards recognized by the commission,” a news release said.

Blackhawk’s program was the first in Wisconsin to earn this designation in 2006. There are currently 13 accredited culinary programs in Wisconsin and Illinois, and only four of them have earned the exemplary distinction.

The distinction is presented to programs with proven full compliance with all ACFEFAC accreditation requirements.

“This award is the final seal of approval for the maximum accreditation award of seven years,” the release said. “(R)eceiving the longest period of accreditation possible (seven years) gives us the distinction of going above and beyond the requirements and having zero areas of non-compliance in our program and curriculum,” said Chef Mark Olson, BTC culinary program coordinator. “This places us in the upper 25% of all culinary colleges across the U.S.”

How are you sleeping? The number of people reporting difficulty sleeping has increased dramatically during the pandemic. Stress and uncertainty combined with a loss of normal routines and activities has contributed to what some are calling “coronasomnia.”

Sleep is not a luxury; it is necessary for health and well-being. Lack of sleep can contribute to Type 2 diabetes, obesity, heart disease, stroke and poor mental health. Being overly tired contributes to car accidents, lost productivity at work and a grumpy mood that can hurt relationships.

Adults need at least seven hours of sleep each night to be fully rested.

If you are struggling to get enough sleep, here are some tips: • Cut back on news and social media in the evenings.

• Go to bed at the same time each night and get up at the same time each morning, including on the weekends.

• Make sure your bedroom is quiet, dark, relaxing and at a comfortable temperature.

• Remove electronic devices such as TVs, computers and smartphones from the bedroom. The blue light they emit can interfere with sleep.

Elementary School Principal Dave Novy acknowledged the Elementary School secretaries, Laurie Sommerfeldt and Angie Fields, for all the work they have done with COVID-19, including but not limited to, phone calls, sorting computers, and everything else on top of their already busy day.

Angie has been a great addition to the Elementary School.

Middle School Principal Lisa Semrow recognized Brett Kaether, Tommy Meier, and Kathy Visger for organizing and implementing Cardinal Study Hall at the Middle School.

High School Principal Jim Matthys recognized the High School Science Department, Nick Jarvis, Steve Krupke, and Tiffany Ebensperger for their outstanding work on learning targets and assessments.

Building and Grounds Director Brian Kammerer recognized Lisa Licht for all her help with Building and Grounds budgeting, Athletic Department budgeting, and Transportation over the years working with her. She will be deeply missed. He also thanked the Building and Grounds crew for their continued effort of snow and ice removal through the difficult winter we have dealt with so far.

Pupil Services Director Sarah Wadsworth thanked Amy Jarvis for her work during her most recent long term Special Education substitute position. Due to Amy’s previous special education experience, she was able to jump right in where the teacher left off. Amy quickly established relationships with parents and students; with her years of experience she was a tremendous asset to the Special Education team.

Technology Director Kevin Buxton acknowledged the efforts of Chad Dix. Chad is very efficient and his work installing Promethean Boards throughout the District is very much appreciated.

Comptroller Cathy Pfeuti recognized Laurie Sommerfeldt, Joleen Oren, Marnie Leifker, and Tonya Buttke for all their work on the 2ndFriday counts. This takes time away from their normal duties. Their time and effort are much appreciated as there is a deadline for submission of the final report. Cathy also recognized Lisa Licht for all her work on tracking of hours for ACA reporting and running reports for year-end reporting.

Superintendent Lenny Lueck recognized Jim Matthys and Tonya Buttke for all of their extra work organizing and running the Superintendent search. He also recognized Brian Kammerer, Chad Dix, and Jim Huffman for all of their work with snow removal.

COVID-19 UPDATE DISCUSSION/ACTION ITEM Superintendent Lueck presented an update on Covid-19 within the District. Staffing and student attendance numbers remain consistent and active cases are decreasing.

Motion by Michael Oellerich, second by Elizabeth Kempel, to reduce the mandatory close contact quarantine period for students who show no COVID-19 symptoms consistent with the recommendations of the CDC. Motion carried, 7-0.
