Local students garner Kohl scholarships Two area students are among the 2021 Herb Kohl Educational Foundation scholarship recipients.

Ashley Lahaie of Orfordville and Hayden Valdivia of New Glarus were chosen for the Kohl foundation’s Student Initiative Scholarship by their schools. Lahaie attends Brodhead High School; Valdivia attends Juda High School.

The students “have demonstrated exceptional initiative in the classroom and have shown strong promise for succeeding in college and beyond, but have not yet received other academic-based scholarships,” according to a news release.

The selection committee for the Kohl Educational Foundation awards recently announced a total of 317 awards for Wisconsin students, teachers and principals.

Awards in the amount of $6,000 are being made to 101 teachers, 16 principals, and their schools, and $10,000 scholarships were awarded to 200 graduating high school students.

The Kohl Foundation Scholarship and Fellowship program was established by Herb Kohl, philanthropist, businessman and former U.S. senator, in 1990. Since then the foundation has awarded nearly $25 million to Wisconsin educators, students and schools.

“Education is the key to the future of Wisconsin and our nation,” Kohl said in the release. “I am very proud of the accomplishments of these students, teachers and principals and look forward to the great contributions they will make in the future.”

Members of the Brodhead High School Jazz Band rehearsed weekly from the middle of January to the beginning of March in preparation for a virtual concert they recently shared with their parents.

New call center offers help with vaccine questions The Wisconsin Department of Health Services last week launched a new toll-free line for residents to get help with vaccine-related questions. The assistance line can be reached at 844-684-1064.

“Learning about the vaccine, trying to find a location and registering for a COVID-19 vaccine appointment can be stressful,” Gov. Tony Evers said in a news release. “Being able to talk directly

to someone who can answer your questions regarding the COVID-19 vaccine will go a long way to easing these concerns.”

The new call center is equipped to help people find vaccine locations, answer medical questions related to the COVID-19 vaccine and assist with registration, including but not limited to providers using the Wisconsin COVID-19 vaccine registry.

DHS community-based vaccination clinics and a few counties are in the early stages of rolling out the vaccine registry. Priority groups, including people currently on wait lists from previously eligible groups within these counties, will be the first notified of the opportunity to schedule an appointment.

Obituaries

CAROL OLSON Carol Olson, age 92, a resident of Eagle River, Wisconsin, since 1995, passed away on Monday, March 1, 2021, at Milestone Senior Living in Woodruff, Wisconsin.

Carol was born May 15, 1928, to Leon and Viola Johnson. She married her husband, LaVerne, in 1949 at the Luther Valley Church.

Carol raised her family in Brodhead prior to moving to Eagle River. She loved to sew, cook and entertain. She also enjoyed many activities with friends, including card club, clogging and Bible study. Carol was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Eagle River and a life member and former president of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, LaVerne Olson, of Eagle River; daughter, Linda (Terry) Gromer of Minocqua, Wisconsin; sons, Leslie Olson of Boston and Kevin Olson of Rhinelander, Wisconsin; brother, Larry Johnson; and sister, Barbara Griffith.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

AGNES RICKES Agnes Gertrude Rickes Lysaght Stillson Hogaboom, lover of life and lifelong resident of New York, passed into eternity on Feb. 27, 2021, at the age of 97 while staying with her daughter in Brodhead, Wisconsin.

Agnes is survived by her children, Francis K. Lysaght, Grace Policastro, Ray A. Stillson Sr. and Lu-Anne Salay; step-daughter, Janice Webb; and brother, James Rickes. She is survived by 21 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and two nieces.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husbands, Walter E. Lysaght, Albert R. Stillson and Arnold M. Hogaboom; her daughter, Maureen A. Santacroce; her son, Walter E. Lysaght; and son-in-law, Thomas J. Santacroce.

Agnes was born at home in the borough of Bronx, New York on May 28, 1923, to Peter Rickes and Lucy Peyton. After graduating from high school, she volunteered as a Red Cross nurse’s aide during World War II. Agnes was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother (Nana) and friend. She was deeply religious, lived by the Golden Rule, and she taught her children to rise above adversity by praying for others.

She was a seamstress who used her talents to bless the lives of her family, newborn babes and the ill and infirm, as well as veterans. She had many tal-

ents, from carpentry to artistry. She was ahead of her time in computer skills and used them to further her interest in genealogy and writing. She enjoyed dancing, reading, traveling, photography and singing in church.

She was proud of being a strong woman who had the ability to roll with life’s punches and she was grateful for the hugs and kisses of her grandchildren.

A private viewing was held for immediate family with the assistance of D. L. Newcomer Funeral Home in Brodhead, Wisconsin. Agnes will be interred at the Immaculate Conception cemetery in Amenia, New York, in mid-spring with the assistance of Hufcut Funeral Home, Dover Plains, New York.

The family would like to thank the Brodhead Fire Department and Brodhead Area EMS for their assistance.

The board was to take up several items, including the discussion and possible action regarding the reappointment of Green County’s corporation counsel, Brain Bucholtz.

Corporation counsel is appointed for two-year terms, and the Personnel and Labor Relations Committee recommended that Bucholtz be reappointed.

Modifications to county board procedures and county purchases and contracts were to be discussed with possible action. There were also to be resolutions for consideration, including highway department purchases and the creation of dementia care technician positions in preparation for the new short-term dementia care unit opening at Pleasant View nursing home. The new positions will not have an impact on the levy due to funding and reimbursement for the positions.

Keeping an eye on COVID It has been interesting following the infection numbers across Wisconsin. Green County is one of only two counties in the state still

Alumni donation funds Albany bleacher project An Albany resident recently donated more than $66,000 to fund the replacement of bleachers in the Albany High School gym.

Harvey Kopp is a 1958 Albany graduate.

“Life has been good to me and Albany has been good to me,” Kopp said in a news release about his donation. “I am glad to be able to help.”

The current wooden high school bleachers were installed in 1964. The

new bleachers will be constructed of a reinforced polyethylene plastic “designed to support severe-impact blows while reducing costly replacement parts and annual maintenance,” the release said.

The bleacher project is the final phase in renovations that have included new wall signage, new wall mats and an updated gym floor.

The current bleachers have boards that are engraved with the names of

families and groups who donated to the new gym floor. Those who donated will have the opportunity to keep a section of the engraved bleachers before the replacement project begins this summer.

In addition, a plaque recognizing donors will be placed in the gym.

Ag youth council seeks future participants The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection is accepting applications for the 2021-2022 Wisconsin Agriculture Youth Council through March 31.

“The Wisconsin Agriculture Youth Council has been a valuable opportunity for our DATCP team to engage with young people about Wisconsin agriculture policies and resources,” DATCP Secretary-designee Randy Romanski said in a news release. “I strongly encourage students with an enthusiasm for Wisconsin agriculture to apply for this council to network with others from across the industry and discover more about the many agricultural-related careers available.”

The Wisconsin Agriculture Youth Council was created in 2020 to encourage young people to engage with state government and increase their awareness of DATCP’s interactions with Wisconsin’s agriculture industry.

Students serve a one-year term and receive a certificate at the completion of their year.

In 2021-2022, the Wisconsin Agriculture Youth Council will again be comprised of 15 Wisconsin high school seniors.

DATCP will aim to include at least one member from each of the nine council districts. The remaining seats will be filled with at-large members. A map and listing of which counties are

located in each of the nine districts is available at AgYouthCouncil.wi.gov.

To apply, students must be a high school senior during the 2021-’22 school year. Students must complete an application form sharing their experience and skills and write a brief essay. Applicants must also submit a one-minute video and letter of recommendation.

The current Wisconsin Agriculture Youth Council members continue to meet virtually each month, engaging with speakers and participating in discussions on a variety of agricultural topics including food processing, animal health and land and water resources.

County sets free COVID-19 screening Green County Public Health officials have announced that beginning Sept. 9, Green County will have three COVID-19 community testing sites.

Free COVID-19 testing will be available for anyone 5 years of age and older.

Individuals who need to be tested are asked to register online prior to getting tested. This is to ensure a smooth and efficient process for everyone, according to a health department news release.

Testing will be available while supplies last at the drive-thru sites, which are at the Monroe National Guard Armory, the former Brodhead Fitness Center and the Swiss Center of North America in New Glarus.

Anyone 5 to 17 years old must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian authorized to give consent for the COVID-19 test on their behalf.

People who can be tested at their doctor’s office are encouraged to do so, the release said.

COVID-19 outbreak sends high school students home

Brodhead High School senior Kaitlyn Welsh is turning to the local community to help children and families in Haiti.

As her senior project, Welsh is organizing the Walk for Family on Saturday, Sept. 26. The two-mile walk will begin at 9 a.m. at the start of the Sugar River Trail in Brodhead.

Community members also may opt to participate by taking their own walking route and collecting donations for the cause, Welsh said in a news release.

The walk will raise money for One Gift, One Child, a ministry of former Brodhead residents Natalie and Pierre Charlotin. Natalie Charlotin is a Brodhead graduate.

“One Gift, One Child serves to prevent orphans and reunite families in the impoverished country of Haiti,” the news release said. “As a ministry, it provides orphaned children, or those put in orphanages by their families, safety from abuse, poverty, rejection, slavery, trafficking and hatred.

“Their end goal is to provide every child a safe environment and eventual reunion with their family. If they do not have a family, they are placed into a foster home that allows them a safe, loving environment to grow up in.”

COVID-19 in any setting involves the same basic public health principles: detection of cases, isolation of ill persons, contact tracing, quarantine of cases and close contacts, laboratory testing and infection control measures in the setting to prevent additional transmission.”

Public health and school district staff members remain in daily communication.

The state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection is collaborating with Walmart, the Wisconsin Grocers Association, the Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Petroleum Marketers & Convenience Store Association to stop gift card scammers. DATCP will provide interested Wisconsin retailers, grocers and convenience stores with free signage upon request for their gift card display stations warning consumers of the risks of paying someone with a gift card.

“Scammers attempt to convince their victims to submit payments via gift cards for fake tickets, outstanding debts, or to prevent utilities or services from suspension,” according to a DATCP news release.

“These imposters prefer payment via gift card because gift cards are like cash. Once you turn over the card number, the transaction cannot be canceled, refunded or traced, often leaving the victim out hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

By reaching consumers at the gift card display, officials at DATCP’s Bureau of Consumer Protection hope to stop consumers before they purchase gift cards intended to “pay” scammers. Each sign will warn consumers that paying someone with gift cards is always a scam. The signs will also list DATCP’s Consumer Protection Hotline number so consumers can call and report a scam or ask for advice about how to avoid one right

I am encouraged by the rest of the state’s ability to reduce case activity level; Green County can reduce its case activity level also. Join a game of ‘Clue’ at Monroe Theatre Guild Production features live or streaming options

Members of the Monroe Theatre Guild will present their first fulllength production of 2021, “Clue: On Stage,” later this month.

The play is based on the 1985 Paramount Pictures film and the Hasbro board game CLUE. Directing the madcap, whodunit comedy for MTG is first-time director Genevieve Kundert, assisted by Laurie Knoke.

In the mystery thriller, 14 local actors portray the iconic characters of Mrs. Peacock, Wadsworth, Mrs. White, Professor Plum, Mr. Green, Colonel Mustard, Miss Scarlet and an ensemble of more quirky characters.

“The story takes place in Boddy Manor, on a dark and stormy night.

Six guests have been invited to a mys-

terious dinner party by an unknown host,” according to a MTG news release. “Soon after arriving at the manor, they find their secretive host is dead! As the body count stacks up, they race to find the murderer. No one is above suspicion.”

To move ahead with a live production during the pandemic, members of the MTG Board of Directors developed policy and practices for a healthy theater experience, the release said.

Disaster help available for farmers impacted by winter storms The U.S. Department of Agriculture is providing technical and financial assistance to help farmers and livestock producers recover from damage brought on by winter storms Uri and Viola. Agricultural producers are encouraged to contact their local USDA Service Center to learn about the programs available to help them recover from crop, land, infrastructure and livestock losses.

Producers who experience livestock deaths due to the winter storms may be eligible for the Livestock Indemnity Program. Meanwhile, the Emergency Assistance for Livestock, Honeybees and Farm-Raised Fish Program provides eligible producers with compensation for feed and grazing losses. For LIP and ELAP, producers will need to file a notice of loss for livestock and grazing or feed losses within 30 days and honeybee losses within 15 days.

Additionally, eligible orchard-

ists and nursery tree growers may be eligible for cost-share assistance through the Tree Assistance Program to replant or rehabilitate eligible trees, bushes or vines lost during the winter storms. This complements Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program or crop insurance coverage, which covers the crop but not the plants or trees in all cases. For TAP, a program application must be filed within 90 days.

FSA also offers a variety of direct and guaranteed loans, including operating and emergency loans, to producers unable to secure commercial financing. Producers in counties with a primary or contiguous disaster designation may be eligible for low-interest emergency loans to help them recover from production and physical losses. Loans can help producers replace essential property, purchase inputs like livestock, equipment, feed and seed, cover family living expenses or refinance farm-related debts and other needs.

Rock County public library cardholders now have free access to LinkedIn Learning, a subscription website used by many Fortune 500 companies to help their employees improve their skills.

“LinkedIn Learning offers courses in software, creative, and business skills and the site meets some of

the internet’s highest standards for accessibility,” according to a news release.

Courses are offered in seven languages, including Spanish.

The course library includes more than 16,000 training videos featuring in-demand skills.

Local students shine in college ag competition An Orfordville student was among the Blackhawk Technical College students to make a strong showing at the recent Wisconsin Professional Agriculture Students Association competitive events virtual conference.

Casey Bennett of Orfordville placed first in employment interview-ag business/management and first in career progress-agribusiness management. Bennett placed fifth in the crops specialist competition.

All together, the BTC team took home 13 awards in addition to honors for Wisconsin PAS Chapter Spirit Award. Their adviser, Dustin Williams, was named Wisconsin PAS Adviser of the Year.

New program features state natural areas, parks “Wisconsin’s Scenic Treasures: Southern Vistas” on PBS Wisconsin premiered recently, however a trio of encore broadcasts are scheduled.

Filmed by PBS Wisconsin last summer from the air, land and water, the program showcases state parks, state natural areas, wildlife areas and forests, many of them held in trust and managed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources for Wisconsinites.

Hundreds of hours of amazing aerial panoramas and ground-level video create this memorable 60-minute adventure. Those who watch will be delighted by the striking visual and ecological diversity of our state’s natural landscapes highlighting Wisconsin’s rich natural and scenic heritage.

Viewers will travel from limestone

bluffs rising high above the Mississippi River to a rare hilltop prairie ablaze with wildflowers in Dane County, to the quartzite cliffs of Devil’s Lake State Park to a southeastern Wisconsin bog alive with carnivorous plants.

Along the way, viewers are treated to visual perspectives not often seen, from aerial vistas at the Dells of the Wisconsin River State Natural Area, to up-close scenes of colorful butterflies and flowers at the Pleasant Valley Conservancy State Natural Area.

“We tried to create a more intimate program that really gives you a sense of being in these places,” said Laurie Gorman, the program’s executive producer. “I hope this inspires people to get out and explore them.”

Featured prominently are 15 state natural areas including Ridgeway

Pine Relict, Scuppernong Prairie, Lulu Lake, Quincy Bluff, and Beulah Bog; six state parks including Devil’s Lake and Governor Dodge; and Horicon Marsh State Wildlife Area. State natural areas owned by The Prairie Enthusiasts, The Nature Conservancy, Riverland Conservancy and Kickapoo Valley Reserve are also among the breathtaking views.

“Wisconsin’s Scenic Treasures: Southern Vistas” will air at 7 p.m.

March 10 and March 14. The program also will air on Milwaukee PBS at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 11.

Next, the crew heads to the 1860s Pomeranian Immigrant Farm to learn why animals were such an important part of daily life on the farm.

The importance of gardens and the variety of plants in the 1860s is also highlighted. Co-host Marie Justice explores the historic process and techniques of 19th century beer making.

Justice then hikes the surrounding woods outside Old World Wisconsin’s 600 acres of history, in the southern unit of the Kettle Moraine Forest. The show then comes to a close by calling attention to the many activities families can take part in during the Christmas season.

“Discover Wisconsin’s episode of Old World Wisconsin is a wonderful reminder of our history: the traditions, culture and resiliency that is passed on through generations,” Justice said. “With the traditional houses, buildings and actors re-creating life during the early settlement of this state, I was transported back in time. I got to spend a day in the life of an early settler, learning about their culture and the ingenuity.

“There’s nothing quite like the experience of visiting Old World Wisconsin. It gives you an appreciation for the people that came before us and their ability to courageously carve out a future for themselves and for generations to come.”

Old World Wisconsin was also featured in episode 16 of Discover Wisconsin’s official podcast, The Cabin. The episode went live on May 19, 2020, and is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and various other podcast streaming apps.

The “Discover Wisconsin” Old World Wisconsin episode will reach the show’s broadcast network of 600,000 viewers across the upper Great Lakes region, including Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and Upper Michigan. The episode was produced by Taylor Carruthers.

Notice of Pending Application for Proposed Riprap Camp Crazy Horse c/o Roxanne Hanly has applied to the Department of Natural Resources for a permit to install riprap on the banks of the Sugar River. The project is located in the NE 1/4 of the SW 1/4 of Section 26, Township 02 North, Range 09 East, Town of Decatur, Green County.

Specifically, the project consists of the stabilization of 170 linear feet of rock riprap with D50 6” rock at a 2 slope. All disturbed areas, including the upper portions of rock, will be covered with topsoil and seeded. No spoil that is produced from this operation will be spread in the floodplain or wetlands; spoil from sloping banks back will be hauled off site. The project was designed and funded by Green County LCD and is anticipated to take place outside of the warm water fish spawning time restriction (March 1 - June 15 annually).

The Department will review the proposal provided by the applicant and any information from public comments and a public informational hearing, if requested. The Department will determine whether the proposal complies with ss.

1.11 and 30.12(3m), Stats., and ch. NR 150, Wis. Adm. Code, and ensure that the required mitigation meets the standards in s.

281.36(3r), Stats. if the project impacts wetlands.

The Department has made a tentative determination that it will issue the permit for the proposed activity.
