Albany honors veterans at school assembly By Beth Blakemore CORRESPONDENT
Albany School honored those who served their country at a Veterans Day ceremony last Thursday. The ceremony commenced with a long line of veterans entering the high school gymnasium. The veterans were of all ages. The high school choir sang “The Star Spangled Banner,” and the high school band performed
“Armed Forces – The Pride of America.” Kirsten Oliver read “Veterans Day,” by Roger Hancock. Jasmine Marcellus read an excerpt from President Truman’s 1945 address to Congress, in which he vowed, “America will never forget their sacrifices.” The ceremony concluded with a moment of silence, and the ceremonial playing of “Taps,” by the band.

Jasmine Marcellus reads a passage from President Harry Truman’s April 16, 1945 address to the joint houses of Congress. Truman gave the address four days after acting President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s death, as the United States was fighting to defeat Nazi Germany and fascist Japan in World War II. Truman’s speech evokes the gratitude owed to our veterans. An excerpt reads: “Our debt to the heroic men and valiant women in the service of our country can never be repaid. They have earned our undying gratitude. America will never forget their sacrifices.
