Scouts invited to Pinewood Derby The Mohawk District Pinewood Derby is being held on Saturday, Feb. 11, at Smart Motors in Madison. Weigh-ins and activities will take place from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., and racing will begin at 9:30 and end at approximately 11 a.m., with trophy presentations to follow. All area Cub/Boy Scouts are invited to participate. Interested adults may also participate.

Participants will use nothing but gravity to race their cars down a 45-foot aluminum track.

When they’re not racing, youth can take part in other fun activities to learn about safety topics like seatbelt use and how back-up cameras work.

The Parkview wrestling team participated in the Rock Valley conference meet last Saturday.

In the 120-pound weight class, Parkview’s Jameson Hunt went 2-3 and captured sixth place.

In consolation round one, Hunt earned a pin against Jefferson’s Jeffrey Heist 30 seconds into the final period.

Parkview’s Conner Nolan wrestled to a 2-3 mark and placed sixth in the 126-pound weight class.

Nolan secured a pin against Brodhead-Juda’s Theodore Policastro

In the 145-pound weight class, Viking Byron Brown had a solid day with a 4-1 record and placed third. In the third-place match Byron Brown delivered a pin against Edgerton’s Trevor Wilkinson with five seconds on the clock in the second period.

Viking Gavon Brown had an excellent day as he posted a 4-1 record and placed third in the 160-pound weight class. Gavon Brown beat Evansville-Albany’s Tyler Aasen by decision 6-3 in an exciting third-place match.

A 1999 state survey revealed that the top three issues that residents of Orfordville wanted to see addressed were a grocery store, a new library, and an updated downtown. With the new Public Library opening in 2015 and the Economic Development grant fund for the revitalization of the downtown up and running, the last item to address was that of a grocery store.

Although the village does have a few locally owned stores that provide some grocery items, the gap has been too wide to fill. Providing another grocery retailer will help to keep residents shopping in the village and will stimulate economic growth in the community.

In a special meeting, the Orfordville Village Board unanimously approved site plans for Dollar General in the village.

Dollar General has over 12,500 stores in 43 states and will provide a local, convenient shopping solution that the residents of the village are currently without. Dollar General carries frequently used products such as groceries, cleaning supplies, health and beauty aids, family apparel, housewares, and seasonal items.

The 7,500-square-foot facility will be located at 505 North Main Street, on the corner of Main St. and State Highway 11. Hours of operations will be 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week, 365 days a year.

On Jan. 28, the Juda Spanish Club hosted Juda’s Got Talent.

This event began with a performance by the community choir directed by Shelly Jordan. The members from the surrounding area were of all ages, the youngest performer being only 12 years old.

After the Juda Community Choir’s pre-show performance, Aurora Daniels was the first act in the competitive part of the show. As a senior from Juda High School, Daniels sang, “Scars to Your Beautiful” by Alessia Cara.

The next act to perform was the singing duo, Nicholas Baum and Lydia Bouc. They sang an original titled, “Perfect.” Baum, a senior, played the piano and added to the vocals while Bouc, a sophomore, sang the main vocals.

Sixth-graders from Juda Schools, Liana Daniels and Vanessa Olmedo, played a piano duet titled, “Secret Agent.” These two dressed the part and came onto the stage in all black, which added to their unique piano performance.

After intermission, the Juda Jazz Band, directed by Greg Smith, gave an introduction to the second half of the competitive acts.

Emily Makos, a sophomore, sang and played piano for “Love Song” by Sara Bareilles.

The next act turned to the movie “Frozen” for performance ideas. Maddie Smith and Sara Jordan sang “First Time in Forever.” Smith, a first-grader, chose Jordan to sing alongside her because Jordan is her “favorite senior.”

ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT PANCAKE SUPPER On Saturday, Feb. 16, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Juda School cafeteria, the Booster Club will be hosting an All-You-Can-Eat Pancake Supper.

Tickets at the door cost $6.00 for adults and $4.00 for kids 10 and under. Tickets can be purchased in the office or at the Bank of Juda ahead of time for $1.00 off. That night, the girls’ basketball team plays at home against Argyle.

CLUB SCRUB The Monroe Clinic is sponsoring Club Scrub again. It is an after-school program started to help create interest in the health-related careers through hands-on activities. Club Scrub is a free program, and the application deadline is Feb. 10. Space is limited, so participants will be selected based on their application. Applicants will be notified on March 1 of whether they will be part of the program. Applications can be found

There were also prizes: a free Suisse Hause large pizza, four Chula Vista Waterpark passes, a Roku Streaming Device, an Amazon Kindle, and a twonight stay at the Wilderness Resort.

The judges for Juda’s Got Talent were Sinem Bertling, Patrick Daniels, Joann Goecks, and Lucy Stuckey.

Nicholas Baum and Lydia Bouc received third place. Emily Makos came in second place. And Maddie Smith and Sara Jordan won Juda’s Got Talent.

Those three acts were awarded medals engraved by Monroe Engraving.

Each year, the Juda Spanish Club hosts this talent show in hopes of receiving funds for their international trips. This spring, the Spanish Club plans on taking 10 club members to the Dominican Republic. The money raised on Jan. 28 will go toward these members, allowing more people the opportunity to travel.

Juda’s Got Talent is an annual show that displays the talent in the Juda community. Feel free to come in support of the community during next year’s show.

Comets fall to Belmont The Albany Comets (2-16 overall, 1-6 Six Rivers) dropped a thriller 57-55 to Belmont in a nonconference matchup last Monday.

The Comets stormed back from a six-point deficit in the final minute but came up one possession short in the comeback effort.

Albany junior Haley Freitag and sophomore Megan Anderson each drilled clutch threes to slice the Braves’ lead to two points in the final minute. The Comets had possession with four seconds on the clock and down two. Freitag had a great look on a 12-foot jumper but her shot missed and the Braves survived.

Sophomore Payton Zurfluh paced the Comets’ offense with a game-high 20 points. Junior Brook Kahler chipped in 11 points. Freitag and junior Madeline Halverson each added seven points.

Albany loses to Black Hawk The Albany Comets (2-17 overall, 1-7 Six Rivers) fell to the talented Black Hawk Warriors 56-29 in a Six Rivers eastern division contest last Thursday.

Black Hawk set the tone in the first half and built a 31-14 halftime lead.

Junior Haley Freitag led the Comets’ offense with nine points.

Juda loses to Benton The Juda Panthers (11-7 overall, 3-3 Six Rivers) dropped a 4033 decision to Benton in a nonconference matchup last Saturday afternoon.

Juda built a 17-14 halftime lead.

The Panthers struggled from the field as Benton stormed back, outscoring Juda 26-16 in the second half. Senior Chelsea Burkhalter paced the Panthers’ offensive attack with 16 points, including four threes. Junior Mackenzie Byrne added nine points for the Panthers.

Vikings fall to Edgerton The Parkview Vikings (4-13 overall, 2-10 Rock Valley) dropped a 54-27 decision to Esdgerton in a Rock Valley crossover contest last Tuesday.

Edgerton jumped out to an insurmountable 35-14 halftime lead.

MIDDLE SCHOOL FIELD TRIP The sixth- through eighth-grade students attended the musical Four Score and Seven Years Ago last Friday at the Monroe Middle School Auditorium.

ACT TEST This year’s juniors will be taking the ACT Test on Tuesday, Feb. 28. The Workkeys portion of the test will be given on Wednesday, March 1. Teachers have been working with students during flex period on Mondays, Wednesday, and Fridays to prepare them for this important test.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL On Tuesday, Jan. 31, Juda played Black Hawk for their Parents’ and Senior Night. Juda was defeated by a score of 53-38. Matt Schmitt led the Panthers with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Skyler Stuckey added 11 points, including three 3-pointers.

SPELLING BEE Congratulations to Toby Husch for winning our school’s spelling bee. Toby will be moving on to the regional spelling bee at the end of the month. This year’s alternate is Ruby Schaffer.

WRESTLING The Brodhead-Juda wrestling team took 12th place out of 18 teams at the Deerfield Scramble.

JUDA ELEMENTARY The Juda Elementary students will be celebrating the 100th day of school on Friday, Feb. 10. The kindergarten class will enjoy an afternoon of 100th day fun! Friday is also Horrible Hair Day. Each student who donates 50 cents to Pennies for Patients can participate in this fun day.

ART DEPARTMENT The kindergarteners are working on their Jim Dine and Jackson Pollock heart/weaving projects. The first-graders are working on their paint circles, the second-graders are working on their pottery, the fourth-graders are learning about the coloring wheel, and the fifthgraders are working on print cutting. Sixth-graders are working on masks, and the Odyssey of the Mind students are focusing on their projects. High schoolers are still

working on their furniture for the annual silent auction to raise money for the art department.

ROLLER SKATING The Monroe Morning Optimists invite all third- through fifth-grade students to a roller skating party on Thursday, Feb. 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Roller Den in Monroe. Doors will open at 5:45 p.m. Entry is free.

Each student will also receive one treat ticket.

Albany students to present ‘The Wizard of Oz’

Homeschool Enrichment at Albertson Memorial Library

Albertson Memorial Library is pleased to offer programs specifically for homeschooled students and their families this year.

Tractor, machinery safety courses beginning in March The 2017 Green County Tractor and Machinery Safety Certification Course will begin in March.

Wisconsin Law states that “No person may direct or permit a child under age 16 years to operate a farm tractor/self-propelled implement of husbandry on the highway unless the child has been certified as successfully completing a tractor and machinery operation safety course.”

The Federal Child Labor Regulations state that “it is unlawful to hire or even permit without pay any youth under age 16 to participate in any work activities listed as hazardous, unless: 1.) The youth is working on

a farm owned and operated by a youth’s parent; or 2.) The youth has a training certificate which provides an exemption from certain hazardous work activities.”

The 2017 course schedule is as follows: *Monday, March 13, 6:30 to 9 p.m., split between Hennessey Implement and the Green County Justice Center; *Tuesday, March 14, 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Albany High School; *Saturday, March 18, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Argyle High School; *Tuesday, March 28, 6:30 to 9 p.m. at New Glarus High School; *Monday, Apr. 3, 6:30 to 9 p.m.

at MERIT Center in Monroe; *Saturday, Apr. 8, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Juda Community Center; *Tuesday, Apr. 18, 4 p.m. to 7 at the Green County Fairgrounds; *Wednesday, Apr. 19, 4 p.m. to 7 at the Green County Fairgrounds; and *Thursday, Apr. 20, 4 p.m. to 7 at the Green County Fairgrounds.

The pyramids are a wonder of the world, But one can only imagine the brick by brick Brutality born on the backs of people Who did not belong to themselves.

We’ve joined God in the heavens And gawked at the Great Wall of China from above.

Our walls go up, then come tumbling down.

But God, God’s eye is on the sparrow.

Greatness is not goodness.

The skyscraper is as old a sight as Babel’s Tower, But no one can skip the Colosseum when in Rome.

Its testimony to empire has stood the test of time, And yet the echoes of martyrs outlast every foundation.

We’ve exterminated nations, peoples, and children, effectively.

UW-Extension to provide meeting on grain management in low-margin years UW-Extension specialists are hitting the road with a series of talks and accompanying fact sheets that address how to best handle different aspects of grain production during low-margin years. The area meetings will start in February of 2017 and will take place at locations throughout the state. One of the area meetings will be held at the Green County UW-Extension Office, located at 2841 6th Street, Monroe, on Feb. 20, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Each specialist will present information for about 30 minutes with time for questions and answers.

Presentations at the Monroe meeting will include: “Crop Budget Analysis for Low Margin Years”

by Nick Baker, UW-Extension Ag Agent in Rock County; “Soybean Inputs that Deliver the Highest ROI in a Low-Margin Year” by Shawn Conley UW-Extension Soybean Specialist; “How to Survive and Thrive on Current Corn Price Pro-

Monday, Jan. 30

Vandalism At 12:18 p.m. deputies handled vandalism to a shed in the North 4900 block of State Highway 69 in the Town of Washington. The shed was spray-painted, and the vandalism occurred sometime between Jan. 27 and the morning of Jan. 28. Any-

Burglaries At 5:48 p.m. and 7:02 p.m., deputies took two reports of burglaries to residences in the North 5500 block of County Highway J in the Town of Washington, and the North 6400 block of County Highway A in the Town of Adams. Both burglaries occurred between 2:15 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Anyone with information on the burglaries can contact Green County Crime Stoppers at 1-800422-7463 or the Green County Sheriff’s Office at 608-328-9400.

Motor vehicle crash At 9:35 p.m., deputies, along with Belleville EMS and the Belleville Police Department, responded to the North 9400 block of State Highway 92 in the Town of Exeter for a onevehicle rollover crash with injuries.

Traffic crime At 9:44 a.m., deputies stopped a vehicle for speeding in the West 6800 block of County Highway P in the Town of Clarno. An investigation resulted in Francisco Huerta Cordero, 37, of Warren, Ill., being cited for Criminal Operating a Motor Vehicle without a Valid Driver’

License Second Offense and Speeding. He was released pending court.

Friday, Feb. 3

Hit and run At 1:09 p.m., deputies were dispatched to the West 2600 block of State Highway 11 in the Town of Jefferson for a Hit-and-Run Crash.

It was reported the offending vehicle was a black-colored Cadillac that left eastbound on State Trunk Highway 11. Rebecca A. Anderson, 44, of Juda, was stopped and waiting to turn north into the Juda Oasis parking lot when an eastbound struck her right rear quarter panel. Anderson reported wearing her seatbelt and was uninjured. There was no airbag deployment, and the vehicle was driven from the scene.

Anderson advised that the driver

of the newer black Cadillac or Ford had followed her into the parking lot. Upon learning that Anderson was going to contact law enforcement, the driver left. The other driver had identified himself to her with a WI DL with a first name of Daniel from Platteville, WI. Anderson described “Daniel” as in his late teens to early twenties.

New Horizons 4-H shares latest activities

Addyson Brauer helps out at home. She is enjoying school and learninghow to read and write.

She attended the 4-H Holiday Social, where she met new people and had fun. She went shopping with a cop and really had a good time. Addyson visited Santa’s Workshop in Monticello and performed in a Christmas concert at Oakley Church. She rang the bells at Shopko and Walmart. Christmas time was spent with her family playing games and opening gifts. She had fun at the New Year celebration.

Connor Brauer has been busy working. He attended the 4-H Holiday Social with his family and has become a youth member of the new Marketingand Promotions Committee. He is a qualified driver now. He went to the elementary school concert. He was among members who rang bells at Shopko and Walmart for the Salvation Army. He spent Christmas and New Year’s with family. As a 4-H Ambassador, Connor led pledges at the adult leaders meeting.

Jaydon Brauer attended the 4-H Holiday Social and had fun. His classwent to the Taylor Creek Nursery and learned about seeds.

CLUB REPORTER

Members of New Horizons 4-H continue to keep busy. They attended different events and activities to round out their 4-H experience.

Chance Ace rang bells for the Salvation Army at Shoko. The Christmas holidays were spent with family and friends. His family went to Chuck E. Cheese and had a good time. The new year began with his celebrating hisbrother’s birthday. He watched his sister acting and singing in a play for the Monroe Theater Guild.

Chance goes to Science Club, does chores, and helpswith the animals at home.

Roxane Ace spent time getting to know her new “Big Sister,” Peggy. She goes to Science Club after school. She has chores and has been starting to work with her dog for the dog project. She rang bells at Shopko and spent time with family and friends at Christmas. She spent time at Chuck E. Cheese playing and counting tickets. When the new year began, Roxane practiced for the play she performed in for the Monroe Theater Guild.

Royce Brauer has childcare classes at school. He has been selected to become a member of the jazz band. He spends time with his

“Big Brother and Sister,” Ben and Veronica. They do many things together. He does chores and helps at home. His family attended the 4-H Holiday Social. Hemade one of the door prizes. Royce is excited about being a youth member of the new county Marketing and Promotions Committee and staying on the Cloverbud Committee.

Christmas time was special this year with new traditions being added to the celebrations. He helped lead the pledges at the adult leaders meeting.

Shannon Day helps her mom at home and helps walk the dog. She likes spending time with friends and is involved in Girl Scout activities. She wentshopping with a cop. That was really cool. She rang bells for the people in need at Shopko. That was a great experience. She was in the Christmas concert. Her family enjoyed the holiday celebrations with family and friends.She performed in a play for the Monroe Theater Guild.

Covered Bridge Days horse show volunteers sought

Established in 2006 as part of Brodhead’s sesquicentennial celebration, Brodhead’s Covered Bridge Horse Show is a non-profit, all-volunteer presentation. It was established as a means for local horse enthusiasts to show and share their abilities in equine activities.

The show has been supported by many local businesses and organizations that have helped to keep entry fees low.

With over 50 classes, the two-day horse show encourages riders of all ages and abilities to join the fun.

Over the years, the show has attracted participants from

Justin Moore attended the 4-H Holiday Social, where he helped set up. He rang Salvation Army bells at Shopko. He spent the holidays with family and friends. He went to see his sister in her play and celebrated his birthday. He helps at home and has chores.

The 4-H club is a great organization for youth and adults. Young people learnlife skills that will help them along the path to their future. Adults are given the opportunity to share their experiences and talents with others. Take a look at 4-H and what it has to offer.

Brodhead UMC to host Maker Fun Factory training event

Girl Scouts celebrating 100 years of cookie sales Well before Thin Mints, Girl Scouts were baking and selling cookies on their own. In fact, our girls were entrepreneurs going as far back as 1917! This year, 100 years later, we celebrate the centennial anniversary of Girl Scouts selling cookies with a brand-new cookie.

DONALD A. NELSON Donald A. Nelson, 86, of Brodhead, Wis., passed away on Sunday, Feb. 5, 2017, at Brookdale Assisted Living in Brookfield. He was born on May 27, 1930, in Elkhorn, Wis., the son of Herbert and Eva (Rummel) Nelson.

His first marriage was to Rose Marie Friemoth in 1951. He later married Sandra Hanzel of Eagle, Wis., in 1990.

Don graduated from Whitewater High School and joined the U.S. Navy, serving on the U.S.S. Valley Forge. He came home to farm in Little Prairie, Wis., where he served on the school board until they merged with the East Troy District. He also was a member of the East Troy Lions Club and had also served on the Board of Directors of the East Troy Co-op.

Don’s first love was barbershop harmony. He sang with a quartet called The Agriculturists, winning the Land O’ Lakes District Championship in 1952 and competing in

iconic s’more, the cookie features a crispy graham cookie, doubledipped in crème icing and coated in chocolate.

During Girl Scout Cookie season, each amazing young Girl Scout is not only selling delicious cookies, but she’s also building essential life skills: goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics—these are the “5 Skills” of the cookie program. And the more cookies girls

sell, the more earnings they have to invest in community projects that drive positive change and personal enrichment experiences, such as travel opportunities.

“The Girl Scout Cookie Program is about more than just cookies,” said Marci Henderson, CEO of Girl Scouts of Wisconsin – Badgerland.

“It teaches girls integral business skills and instills a lifelong sense of civic responsibility that creates leaders. At Badgerland, so many

Don moved to the Marshfield area in 1990 and farmed there for nine years. It was at that time that he married Sandy. They moved to Brodhead in 1999 and continued to farm.

Don also continued singing with the Green County Barbershop Chorus for eight years.

Don had farmed his entire life and loved to plant corn, pour cement, and build farm buildings. He said his calling was to produce food for other people.

Don is survived by his wife, Sandy; four children, Kathleen (Rick) Vultaggio, Ariz., Ben (Cindey) Nelson, East Troy, Wis., Oley (Susan) Nelson, Hayward, Wis., and Kathryn (Steve) Mell, Waunakee, Wis.; two step-children, Linda (Rodney) Kloss, Waukesha, Wis., and Daniel (Jennifer) Hanzel, Crown Point, Ind.; 13 grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Wayne and George.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Thursday, Feb. 9, at the D.L. Newcomer Funeral Home in Brodhead, with Cal Schaver officiating.

Burial will be in Milton Lawns Memorial Park and Mausoleum, Janesville, Wis. Visitation will be held from 10:30 a.m. until time of services on Thursday at the funeral home.

A memorial fund will be established.

Monroe Clinic Hospice hosting support group Learn to cope with the loss of a loved one The journey through grief is difficult. Many people find it comforting to face grief with others experiencing similar challenges. To help through the journey, Monroe Clinic Hospice is holding a Hope Eternal After Loss (HEAL) grief education and support group, which provides resources and encouragement for people grieving the death of a loved one.

The six-week HEAL group meets Wednesdays, 9-10:30 a.m., Feb. 15 through March 22, at the St. Camillus Center, 2101 6th Street, Monroe, Wis. The HEAL support group is free and open to adults over 18 who have experienced the death of someone special. In this sympathetic setting, helpful discussion topics include:

• The importance of information and support as we grieve; • Understanding grief as a process; • Identifying and accepting normal feelings when grieving; • Past and present losses; • Factors which complicate grief; • Coping with the stress of grief; and • Remembering: memorials and anniversaries.
