Alice in Dairyland applications due The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) is seeking a communications professional eager to help Wisconsin residents make meaningful connections with Wisconsin agriculture as the 73rd Alice in Dairyland. Individuals interested in applying may submit applications through Monday, Feb. 3, 2020. “Applying to serve as Alice in Dairyland is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” said 72nd Alice in Dairyland Abigail Martin. “Being Wisconsin’s agricultural ambassador has allowed me to share the story of our state’s $104.8 billion agriculture industry with many diverse audiences across the state. It’s also broadened my own view of agriculture and deepened my appreciation for the industry.”

In this highly visible, fast-paced position, Alice in Dairyland cultivates relationships with television, radio, and print media outlets; writes and delivers speeches at events large and small; and leverages social media to promote Wisconsin agriculture.

Minimum Qualifications Applicants should have: • Considerable knowledge or work experience with Wisconsin agriculture • At least three years of experience, education or training in communications, marketing or public relations • Public speaking experience, and • A willingness to attend an extensive number of work-related events

on evenings and weekends.

Applicants must be female Wisconsin residents who are 21 years old.

Position Information The one-year, full-time contractual position starts June 1, 2020. The position is headquartered in Madison and travels extensively throughout the state. The salary is $45,000 annually and includes holiday, vacation, and sick leave as well as use of a vehicle for official business. Reimbursement is provided for health insurance as well as travel expenses for official purposes.

Selection Process Interested individuals should submit an application form, cover letter, resume, three professional references, and a summary of their qualifications by 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 3, 2020. Application materials are available at https://datcp.wi.gov/ Pages/Growing_WI/BecomingAlice. aspx In contrast to previous years, preliminary interviews will be held on a Saturday (Feb. 22, 2020) and may be conducted via Skype or in person.

Following these preliminary interviews, up to six top candidates will be required to attend a two-day program briefing and press announcement on March 13-14. Top candidates must also attend the three-day final interview process May 14-16 in Walworth County, which culminates in the selection of the 73rd Alice in Dairyland.

GCDC Annual Dinner offers economic development presentation What does economic development really look like? Why is it so important to our communities? How can it transform these places we call home?

The Green County Development Corporation (GCDC) will consider these questions at its Annual Dinner and Recognition Meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 25. Keynote speaker Rick Dickinson, president and CEO of Greater Dubuque Development Corporation, will share insights gained from Dubuque to help understand the issues better. Although Dubuque faced a host of challenges in previous decades, by transforming its leadership and approach to development, the city has turned itself around. Today, residents enjoy the benefits of a robust business climate and a beautifully redeveloped river district. Dickinson’s presenta-

tion promises to be relevant and enlightening for Green County elected officials, and community and business leaders.

GCDC’s Annual Meeting and Recognition Dinner is open to the public. Tickets are now available and cost $40 each; tables of eight are available. The dinner, held at Turner Hall in Monroe, begins with a social hour at 4:30 p.m. Dinner is at 6 p.m., followed by presentation of awards and the keynote speaker.

GCDC is also accepting nominations for its annual awards to be presented during the event. These

Albany Village Board minutes The regular meeting of the Albany Village Board was called to order on Dec. 9, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. in the Albany Village Hall by President Kim Blumer. Members present were: Blumer, Eileen Althaus, Bert Hefty, Tonya Stephan, Larry Nipple, and Michelle Monson. Absent: Fred Johnson. Also present were: Jennifer Fasula, Tony Ariaga, Bob Ritter, Lonnie Gill, and Dena Laughlin. The Pledge of allegiance was shared. Proof of posting was verified.

AGENDA: Motion by Monson, seconded by Stephan to approve the agenda as posted. Carried.

MINUTES: Motion by Althaus, seconded by Hefty to approve the minutes of the 11-18-19 board meeting as printed. Carried.

PRESIDENT’S MOMENT: Nothing at this time.

PUBLIC APPEARANCES: There were none.

LIBRARY UPDATE: Althaus reported that there was a very good turn-out for the Snack with Santa held last Saturday. It was a success.

Motion by Monson, seconded by Hefty to accept the Offer to Purchase for Lot 2 of CSM 2998 in the Business Park in the amount of $23,175 from Jennifer Fasula and Alejandro Arriaga. Carried. 115 NORTH WATER STREET WINE LICENSE: Motion by Blumer, seconded by Stephan to approve a Class “C” Wine License to Dena Laughlin dba The General Store located at 115 North Water Street with the reminder that more than 50% of the income from the business must come from food sales to qualify for this license.

by Blumer, seconded by Monson to set the date for the 2020 Caucus for Monday, January 13, 2020 immediately before the Village Board meeting at 6:30 p.m. Carried.

BUILDING PERMIT FEE FOR ALBANY SCHOOL: Motion by Althaus, seconded by Stephan to waive the fee for a building permit for the Albany School for their pending improvements. Carried.

FENCE PLANS: Motion by Nipple, seconded by Monson to approve the fence plan as presented to Christopher and Gretchen Brown for their property located at 403-2 North Mechanic Street. Carried.

POND STREET EASEMENT: Keepers explained that there is no longer any issue with the mortgage holder for the property located at 401 North Mechanic Street to get the easement on the vacated 132’ of Pond Street, so the village attorney stated that it would be much clearer if we had them sign an easement for the water main that crosses there.

However, the owner previously wanted to be paid from the village to get this easement. No other property owners were paid nor did they even mention it. After a short discussion, a motion was made by Blumer, seconded by Hefty to ap-

proach the owner with the easement, but that no money change hands.

The village would still purchase the elderberry vines he is requesting.

Carried.

SNOWMOBILE TRAIL INTO THE VILLAGE: Keepers explained that all property owners had been asked if they still have no problems with the snowmobile trail crossing their property, and it has been found that they all have been notified. However, there were no signed agreements received. Dena Laughlin suggested that if they want to cross the Highway 59 on to her property, they could do so, as it

may be safer. She asked that they be told this offer. Motion by Monson, seconded by Blumer to approve the Snowmobile trail as it has been for the past years contingent on getting the signed agreements with the property owners along this path.

Carried.

BILLS: Motion by Althaus, seconded by Blumer to approve the bills as presented. Carried.

BTC Personal Growth and Continuing Education begins Feb. 3 Blackhawk Technical College offers a number of classes for personal growth and continuing education. The community is invited to take courses ranging from painting to electrical to gardening and more.

Apply now for GROWMARK agricultural scholarships Women of Wellness to meet in Albany The GROWMARK Foundation is once again offering 15 $1,500 scholarship program for students in the United States and Ontario, Canada, pursuing two- or four-year degrees or trade school certification in an agriculture-related field.

“As our business has grown and evolved, we saw a need to provide a scholarship to students throughout the United States and Ontario, in addition to the scholarship programs already established in our core geography,” said Amy

Bradford, GROWMARK corporate communications manager and GROWMARK Foundation manager. “GROWMARK and the FS member cooperatives are strong supporters of youth leadership education and this is one more way we can contribute to the future of agriculture.”

Applicants must complete an online application which includes academic information, community service and leadership activities, and essay questions regarding agri-

culture and cooperatives. Applications will be judged by a panel of agribusiness professionals.

BLOOD DRIVE The Juda School Blood Drive on Tuesday, Jan. 28 was extremely successful. Despite the sicknesses going around, they were able to collect 32 pints of blood out of their goal of 33.

MATH DEPARTMENT This week in the Math Department, Algebra I will be learning how to solve basic quadratic equations. In Geometry, students will start handdrawing their dream houses that will later be drawn in SketchUp. In Algebra II, students will be learning how rates relate to other measurements. In Pre-Calculus, students will be starting a retirement project. In Calculus, students are learning how to find the volume of any 3D object by revolving a 2D shape from a graph about an axis. In Engineering, students are continuing to research the school’s plumbing and how it could be improved. In College Engineering, students are beginning to work with AutoCAD to draw 2D and 3D models.

The math department is looking for adults willing to volunteer to help with the meet. No experience in math is required, and volunteers’ jobs will be distributing and monitoring the tests. If you are able to volunteer, please contact Juda Schools as soon as possible.

ANATOMY Students in anatomy and physiology are continuing to learn about the muscle system. They are distinguishing the different types of muscles and understanding the concepts of muscle contraction and muscle fatigue. Students are breaking down the organization of muscle fibers and learning what they are made of.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION Students in physical education have just ended their Pickleball unit.

They participated in a tournament between the kids in their class and then took a written and skills test.

This week they will begin their Create-A-Game unit. Students will be split into groups and have to design a game for their entire class to play.

The game will have to have defined rules and ways to physically benefit the players.

BOYS BASKETBALL Last Monday the JV and Varsity had a non-conference matchup against Parkview. The final score of the Varsity game was 45- 60.

The leading scorers from Juda were Trent Anderson with 14 points, followed by Gavin Kammerer with 9 points, and Payton Johnson with 8 points. The boys also played Friday night at Belmont High School in a rematch from earlier in the season.

Both sides of the Six Rivers Conference played each other for suicide prevention. The next boys’ basketball game will be Thursday, Feb. 6, at home vs. Monticello, followed by a game Saturday, Feb. 8, at Cassville High School.

GIRLS BASKETBALL The girls’ basketball team faced Highland last Tuesday, Jan. 28, which ended in a loss. They ended the week off back on track, though, when they traveled to Pecatonica to compete against the Vikings, resulting in a win. This week the ladies will match up against the Albany Comets and the Barneveld Eagles.

Friday night’s game will recognize all seniors and parents of those participating. We encourage all parents

to attend this event and arrive at 6:35 p.m.. The recognition will take place before the warm-up. We hope to see you there. Reminder: All games will start at 7 p.m. unless noted otherwise.

SOFTBALL WINTER WORKOUTS Softball winter workouts will be held at the end of every school day.

Those trying out for softball in the spring are encouraged to make as many workouts as they can. Softball batting cages will also be held at the school on Sundays at 12:30 p.m.

ENGLISH English I is taking their test on “The Most Dangerous Game.” English II is writing a prelude to “The Cask of Amontillado.” English III students are presenting on their chosen topic in the Modern Slavery unit. Oral Communications is doing their self-concept collage. English Honors is finishing up Macbeth and starting their paper on the classic.

PSYCHOLOGY The psychology class is discussing prejudice and discrimination.

They just finished watching the video A Class Divided. It is about a teacher dividing her class by the color of their eyes, which created an “in group” and an “out group.” This taught the children to put themselves in the shoes of minorities.

STATISTICS In Statistics Class, they are discussing T-Intervals and Z-Intervals.

Their telepresence teacher, Mr. James Schwab, from Albany, made a visit to Juda on Friday the 31st.

TEACHER OF THE WEEK The teacher of the week this week is Ms. Ashlee Cerjak, who is in her seventh year of teaching elementary physical education at Juda High School. Cerjak’s favorite candy bar is a Kit Kat. Her favorite type of food is Mexican. Walmart is Ms. Cerjak’s favorite and most frequently visited store. Her favorite part of teaching is observing her students finally accomplish something they have been struggling with.

SENIOR OF THE WEEK The senior of the week this week is Mike Klitzke. His favorite high school memory is when he ran the mile in under six minutes. His favorite teacher is Mrs. Elmer because “She’s the chillest teacher here.” His future plans are to go into the army, then to college for computer repair.

Mike’s favorite lunch is chicken strips and mashed potatoes. If he won the lottery, he would buy a nice house and a Dodge Charger. If he had to live in one state for the rest of his life, he would live in Virginia because of the scenery and the weather.

ART DEPARTMENT This week in the art department the elementary classes are starting brand new projects. The two middle school classes are continuing their previous projects. The high school art classes are now starting their furniture projects.

NATIONAL ICE CREAM FOR BREAKFAST DAY Students had ice cream for breakfast on Friday, Jan. 31. It was a great way to end the dreary January week!

There was a great turnout of students of all ages.

HOLOCAUST A new class started this semester about the horrors of the Holocaust and what caused them. It is a telepresence class that is taught by Mr. Goecks of Brodhead High School.

It is attended by Brodhead, Juda, and Monticello students. In previous weeks the class has watched the film Remember the Titans in order to discuss the race and sexist elements in the film in an attempt to better understand why and how racism has proliferated in 20th Century America and how it is still proliferating today. Currently, the class is discussing other race elements in modern America.

FLEX There has been a change made to flex. All students were placed in different rooms starting yesterday.

High school students who have responsibility or flex passes have been reminded of how to use them appropriately.

TAX TIME 2020 Five tax tips for 2019 – and beyond

If there’s one thing Americans can generally agree on, it’s that taxes are a major drag. Nobody likes paying them, and nobody enjoys filing them. But if you follow these tips, you may find that you not only pay the IRS less money, but also have an easier time preparing your next tax return.

1. Keep great records The more meticulous you are at keeping records, the easier it’ll be to file your taxes. To this end, have a filing system that allows you to organize key documents like pay stubs, tax forms, and expenses you’re planning to write off. That last category is especially important if you’re self-employed and plan to deduct some of the costs involved in earning your income.

2. Don’t assume you’ll itemize Even if you own a home and have had reason to itemize on your tax returns in the past, the tax law that went into effect in 2018 raised the standard deduction substantially.

For the 2019 tax year, it’s $12,200

for individuals, $18,350 for heads of household, and $24,400 for married couples filing jointly. This means that if you’re filing a joint return, you need more than $24,400 in itemized deductions to make that option worth it.

3. Take advantage of IRAs and 401(k)s Retirement savings plans like IRAs and 401(k)s don’t just let you set aside funds for the future; they also allow you to save money at present. In 2019, you can contribute up to $6,000 to an IRA and up to $19,000 to a 401(k) if you’re under 50, and these limits increase to $7,000 and $25,000, respectively, for those 50 and over. Put your money in the traditional version of either account (as opposed to a Roth), and you’ll reduce your taxable income for the year. For example, if you fund a traditional IRA with $4,000, that’s $4,000 the IRS can’t tax you on.

4. Know your tax code changes The 2018 tax code overhaul brought about a lot of changes that could impact you at present and in

the coming years. Reading up on those changes could therefore help you make smart decisions that either save you money or prevent you from facing financial difficulties.

For example, one thing the overhaul did was lower most individual tax brackets so that workers would get more money in their paychecks.

In conjunction with this change, the IRS issued new withholding tables for employers to follow. If you don’t review and adjust your withholding, you’ll risk underpaying your taxes and owing the IRS money when you file your next return, so pay attention to this and other changes that could impact you.

5. Find tax-advantaged ways to save and pay for healthcare Chances are, healthcare is one of your biggest expenses, but you can help make it more affordable by saving for it in a tax-advantaged fashion. You can start by opening a flexible spending account, or FSA, which, this year, allows you to set aside up to $2,700 to pay for qualified medical expenses like doctor visits and prescriptions.

Furthermore, if you’re on a high-deductible health plan (defined as $1,350 or more for individual coverage, or $2,700 or more for family coverage), you can open a health savings account, or HSA, and set aside funds to pay for near-term and long-term coverage. This year’s HSA limits are $3,500 if you’re saving just for yourself, or $7,000 if you’re contributing on behalf of a family. As is the case with a traditional IRA or 401(k), whatever sum you put into an FSA or HSA is money the IRS can’t tax you on, so it pays to capitalize on these accounts.

Nobody wants to pay more taxes than necessary, or run into difficulties during the filing process. Follow these tips, and with any luck, you’ll avoid both scenarios this year and in the years to come.

low the ATV usage in the Village so that Orfordville and Brodhead could be connected. This would allow access to both Green and Grant County which where ATV usage is very active. Kubly suggested that a committee be formed so that the Town of Spring Valley can be approached to allow usage to connect Brodhead and Orfordville. This would allow ATV traffic to come to Orfordville to benefit the local businesses. Kris Johnson of 313 N. Main Street was present and explained that Orfordville approving the use of ATV’s on Village Streets would be a good step to show that the Village is interested in connecting to Brodhead and ready to do so.

Johnson explained that being on a committee would be hard for him due to his work schedule. Chief Raupp explained that he spoke with Chief Hughes from Brodhead this afternoon. Chief Raupp explained that there are not problems in Brodhead with the use of ATV’s on the streets. Chief Raupp indicated that he is concerned with ATV’s being on State Highway 213 due to the high volume of traffic. Chief Raupp further added that he felt the discussion be held at the committee level and information be brought back to the Village Board. Tuffree asked those in attendance if they were interested in having ATV’s allowed on Village streets. There were five people present to support it. President Phillips explained that he is not against the usage in the Village, but would like the residents to form a committee to look into what needs to be done. No action taken. * Purchase new mower. Director Todd was present to explain the

purchase of a new mower. Director Todd explained that the Village currently has two mowers, the older mower has over 2,000 hours on it and is having problems. Director Todd would like to purchase a subcompact tractor/mower that the Village could use for other things in addition to mowing. Director Todd explained that the tractor/ mower would have a backhoe and bucket in addition to mowing capabilities. Director Todd further explained that the tractor/mower could be used for curb repairs, sidewalk work, cleaning sidewalks, fixing water boxes, and sink hole repairs. Director Todd explained that the Village would be able to do more work on their own if they had the backhoe and bucket. DPW Director Nick Todd explained that the current reader is very out of date and is over 130 upgrades behind. Director Todd explained that Sensus no longer services the equipment due to its age. Director Todd showed the Village Board the IPearl meter that he would like to switch the Village over to. The IPearl is a 20 year meter that will have radio read capabilities, meaning the meters can be read from a vehicle instead of hooking the current reader up to the touch read pad at each home in the Village. Director Todd further explained that the new system will have a security feature and be able to detect water leaks. Motion by Schmidt, seconded by Tuffree to purchase the Meter Upgrade system from Core & Main at the cost of $135,855.00, with the water and sewer utility each paying half using funds set aside at the Wisconsin State Trust Fund Program. NEW BUSINESS All-Terrain Vehicle Use on Village Streets. Dusty Kubly, a member of the Green County ATV Club, was present to explain the need for ATV access in the Village. Kubly explained that the ATV community is of the middle age group. Kubly further explained that having ATV access in the Village would bring people to town to frequent businesses in the Village. Kubly explained that Brodhead allows ATV usage on all city streets except for Highway 11.

Democratic Party of Green County schedules February meeting The Democratic Party of Green County will be meeting Thursday, Feb. 13, at Turner Hall (1217 17th Ave., Monroe). Social and dining time begins at 5 p.m. with the meeting at 6 p.m. This month’s guest speaker will be Pat Kreitlow, editor of online news site, Up North News. This meeting is open to the public.

Obituaries KENNETH HENRY MEYER Kenneth Henry Meyer, age 89, of Brodhead, Wisconsin died on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2020.

He was born on Jan. 3, 1931 in Mundelein, Illinois, the son of George and Edith (Wirtz) Meyer. He was a graduate of Libertyville Illinois High School and a 1952 graduate of Illinois State University, Normal, Illinois. He served in the Marine Corps from 1952 until 1955 and was stationed in Korea.

He was a member of Illinois Farm Bureau, Wisconsin Farm Bureau, VFW Post #6858, a supervisor on Spring Valley Town Board since 1977, and an active member of the Brodhead United Methodist Church where he served on many committees over the years. Ken taught school in Diamond Lake, Illinois and Reno, Nevada before going into farming with his uncle in the Mundelein area.

He farmed in the Brodhead area from 1970 until he retired in 1995. He also helped out during tax season at his brother-in-law’s tax service in Libertyville, Illinois. Ken especially enjoyed golfing with his friends and was a lifetime fan of the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears.

Ken is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sandra Meyer of Brodhead, a daughter Bonny (Edison) Blake of Elkhorn, WI, two sons, Leigh (Victoria) Meyer of Santa Rosa, CA, James (Chris) Meyer of Bloomington Illinois, seven grandchildren, Iris, Wilder and Spencer Blake, Madison James, Logan and Bryce Clarenson, Caleb Meyer and 4 great grandchildren, Mason, Wyatt and Parker Clarenson and Vincent James.

He was preceded in death by his parents, aunts, one uncle, George and his sister Helen (Carl) Kakenmaster of Grayslake, Illinois.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Wisconsin Chapter or the Agrace Hospice of Janesville.

Funeral services were held at the DL Newcomer Funeral Home, 1105 E. 9th Avenue in Brodhead on Jan. 25.

A visitation took place at the funeral home until the time of services.

Burial concluded at the Greenwood Cemetery with military honors.

ROBERT H. OLIVER Robert H. Oliver, 90, formerly of Brodhead, WI. passed away Saturday, Jan.18, 2020 at Omega Hospice House in Houghton, MI. Robert was born at home in Spruce, MI on July 18,1929 to parents Eugene Oliver Jr. and Marion (Freda) McNeil. Bob served in the Army as a paratrooper with the 101st Army Airborne Div. (Screaming Eagles) for two years. Bob and his wife Bernice (nee Untz) were engaged in farming for 31 years in Brodhead then retired to Arizona for 18 years. After the passing of Bernice,his wife of 63 years , Robert returned to Wisconsin for a short period before moving to Lake Linden, MI near his daughter Debra.

Preceded in death by his parents and wife, he is survived by six children, Carol Eichstaedt, New Richmond,WI, Debra Oliver, Lake Linden, MI, Dawn Oliver (Dan Reimer), Wolf Creek, MT, John (Deborah), Robert S. (Wendy), Mark (Nancy) all three of Brodhead, WI, 16 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren.

A celebration of Robert’s life will take place this coming summer at a date and place to be announced later.

Interscholastic Athletic Association Board January meeting summary The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Board of Control approved changes to the fall season regulations at its January meeting.

Following a review of the recommendations by the Sports Advisory Committee and the Advisory Council, the Board assessed and acted on 39 proposals advanced by the fall coaches’ and officials’ advisory committees with 23 receiving approval.

Seven changes to the football season regulations were ratified by the Board. A number of the changes are associated with qualifying and seeding the playoffs.

Teams will be required to play seven conference games or six conference games with an additional mandated crossover game to be eligible for the playoffs beginning in 2020. The crossover game will count as a conference game for playoff qualifying, and all conference or

mandated crossover game forfeits will count as a conference win. Furthermore, the same forfeit language in the 11-player regulations will also apply to the 8-player regulations.

In other 8-player action, Board approval sets Tuesday, Aug. 11 as the earliest date to begin practice in 2020 to allow for an eight-game regular season.

The Board also approved a recommendation to adopt the criteria, formula and results of the final summary for electronic seeding and eliminate coach appeals in 2020.

Lastly, elected members of the WFCA Executive Board will be permitted to serve as full voting members if appointed to the Football Advisory Committee.

The deadline date for all schools in Sectional #1 to vote on the configuration of the Tournament Series grouping will change for 2020-21.

For boys soccer, the deadline changes from the traditional August date to May 31, and for girls soccer, the deadline is moved from March to Oct. 31. Another tournament-related rule change declares the higher-seeded team be designated the home team and wear dark uniforms throughout the pre-State Tournament Series. The Executive Staff amended a soccer coaches’ recommendation to require the team season summary information to be submitted on the WIAA Season Summary Form for the seeding meeting for all sports. The Board passed the amended proposal unanimously.

The Board approved a coaches’ recommendation to count a straight red card received during the regular season as two yellow cards toward its limit of 24 yellow cards. Programs receiving 24 or more yellow cards during the regular season is prohibited from participating in the Tournament Series.

In addition, the Board authorized a regulation that removes from the Tournament Series any team receiving five straight red cards for any player who receives three straight red cards during the regular season.

The Board also passed a recommendation to adjust the pre-game protocol identifying when officials begin their on-site responsibilities to 15 minutes prior the start of the competition with the whistle at seven minutes. The final change grants a soccer coaches’ request to amend language in the season regulations

to encourage post-game handshakes.

In volleyball, the Board agreed with a recommendation to add “hosting a multi-team event” as an allowed exception to the language prescribing 20 minutes for pre-match warm-ups. It also struck language in the season regulations that removed the privilege for head coaches to stand if they failed to attend or participate in the seeding meeting.

In girls golf, the Board approved a change in tournament divisional assignments. Beginning in 2020-21, 60 percent of the schools sponsoring the sport are placed into Division 1 with the remaining 40 percent of programs placed into Division 2. In addition, boys and girls golf coaches will be allowed to tend the flag and rake the bunkers to improve pace of play with a stipulation that the allowance may be revoked if abused.

The Board passed a cross country recommendation, amended to include all sports, that edits language addressing teams with only ninth grade students. The new language exclusively references non-varsity teams with only ninth grade students. The other cross country proposal approved prohibits audible music–other than the music used by meet management–and noisemakers at or near the starting line.

Two swimming and diving recommendations were written into the season regulations for 2020-21.

Language in the tournament procedures now requires times to be submitted in the hundredths of a second and that the time is from the current school year’s WIAA sanctioned events. The second change requires a signed copy of the results veri-

“DHS is actively monitoring this outbreak and working with our local, state, and federal partners to be able to respond quickly and effectively when people have symptoms of this virus and a likelihood of exposure,” said State Health Officer Jeanne Ayers. “While all information we have so far shows there is low risk to the general public, we take new infectious diseases seriously and are taking precautions.”

We are closely coordinating with local health departments and our federal partners to stay on top of this issue. Our local partners are helping us conduct interviews, collect specimens, and follow up with patients to see who they have been in contact with.

DHS has asked health care providers to alert us if a person with recent

travel to Wuhan, China has become sick with fever or respiratory symptoms. When people under investigation for novel coronavirus are evaluated, clinical samples are collected and submitted to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for testing. That testing can take several days. If there is a confirmed case in Wisconsin, details and protective recommendations will be shared with the affected person, or persons, and the public.

Coronavirus isn’t rare. In fact, seasonal coronavirus activity typically increases in Wisconsin this time of year, along with influenza and other respiratory viruses. Attention is heightened in this outbreak because it is a novel, or new, form of the virus.

“We know people are wondering what to do to protect themselves and their families from this virus. Our best advice is to follow the same steps for avoiding colds and flu, including staying home when you’re sick, covering coughs and sneezes, and frequently washing hands,” Ayers said.

The membership of the WIAA oversees interscholastic athletic programs for 512 senior high schools and 46 junior high/middle level schools in its membership.

Monroe Clinic Hospice Support Group

The journey through grief is difficult. Many people find comfort in facing grief with others experiencing similar challenges. To help through the journey, Monroe Clinic Hospice is holding a Hope Eternal After Loss (HEAL) grief education and support group. The support group provides encouragement and resources.

Middle School Principal Lisa Semrow recognized Erin Kammerer for piloting a motivational reading program within her classroom.

Elementary School Principal Dave Novy gave public thank you to Kirsten Novy for all of the work she does with getting the Elementary School’s reading motivational program ready. There is a great committee that does a lot of work orchestrated all by Kirsten.

High School Principal Jim Matthys thanked Paul Huffman, Lisa Biber, Erika Klecker, and Steve Krupke for volunteering their time for ACT test preparations. He also thanked Superintendent Lueck, Kathy Visger, and Deb Fox for their work with the show choir program.

Technology Director Kevin Buxton recognized the effort of Jeannie Doescher in the High School office. As the High School proceeds with the second year of the student one-to-one device program, there has been an increase in the number of students needing to pay for repairs to their devices. Ms. Doescher has taken the responsibility of collecting these payments for the High School.

Pupil Services Director Sarah Wadsworth recognized Michelle Grenier and her team of para-educators (Jeanne Wellnitz, Jeanne Vogel, and Robert Brugger) for the work they are doing with transition programming.

They currently have our students working, volunteering, and shopping at local businesses. In return, the businesses have provided the students with employee shirts and access to equipment and space. Michelle has also made a volunteer connection with Jesse Saint who comes into the transition classroom two times per month. Jessie works with the students to create art projects.

Ms. Wadsworth also recognized Jeanne and Kelly Wellnitz for setting up the opportunity with our local snowmobile club for students to paint trail posts. In return, the snowmobile club bought lunch for the students.

Superintendent Lueck recognized Lisa Semrow and Stephanie Tresemer for all of their work with the Senior Citizen Holiday Luncheon. It was another great event.

Residents encouraged to get flu shots

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) today announced our state has seen 459 hospitalizations for influenza this season, more than three times as many than at this time last year. Admissions to intensive care units for respiratory illnesses are also on the rise. And already, 11 Wisconsinites have died due to complications from influenza.

“These hospitalizations and deaths are a sober reminder that flu is not only dangerous; it can be deadly,” said State Health Officer Jeanne Ayers. “That’s why we urge all Wisconsinites to get flu shots, not only to protect themselves, but also everyone around them from serious illness. If you have yet to get your flu shot, it is not too late.”

The flu shot can help prevent the virus, and greatly reduce symptoms if you do get it, shortening time away from work or school. The flu vaccine finder will help you locate a pharmacy near you that is providing flu shots.

Everyday habits can also help you avoid catching or spreading the flu: *Stay home if you’re sick.

You can pass the flu to friends or family before you even know you have it. See a health care provider if your symptoms persist or get worse. *If you’re visiting a loved one in a hospital, nursing home, or other assisted living facility, ask a nurse for a mask and be sure to wash your hands or use hand sanitizer. Some facilities may put restrictions on visitors.

Check before you go. *Don’t hold or kiss a baby if you’re sick. Babies under six months old cannot get the flu shot. *Wash your hands often with soap and water, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. *Cover your cough or sneeze with your upper sleeve, and try to avoid touching your face with your hand. If you use a tissue, throw it away after one use. *Use your own drinking cups, straws, and utensils. *Eat nutritious meals, get plenty of rest, and don’t smoke. *Frequently clean commonly touched surfaces (e.g., doorknobs, refrigerator handles, telephones, faucets).
