Make heart health a priority, experts advise Rock County provides Monroe Clinic doctors offer suggestions during Heart Month With the nation’s health care focus on COVID-19, officials at Monroe Clinic are reminding people of the importance of heart health during Heart Month.

“In addition to staying vigilant in all ways of protecting ourselves from COVID-19, I would like to use the occasion of Heart Month to remind everyone how critical heart health is, especially during a pandemic,” Monroe Clinic cardiologist Arif Ahmad said in a news release.

Patients with existing risk factors for heart disease, such as high blood pressure, face greater risks if they contract COVID-19, Ahmad said.

“These patients may be reluctant to leave home for cardiology visits in an effort to avoid the virus,” he said.

“However, maintaining your regular health care visits has become more important than ever so you can remain healthy. And our clinic has instituted numerous safety precautions to keep everyone, patients and staff, safe.”

Ahmad advised that it’s crucial for cardiology patients to stick to their cardiac care plan and maintain relationships with their cardiology team.

In addition, Dr. Sunil Penesetti, also a Monroe Clinic cardiologist, said Hearth Month is a great time for everyone to become familiar with the risk factors for heart disease and how to lower or elimSunil Penesetti inate them, even those with no previous cardiac issues.

“The most recognized risk factors for heart disease include high blood pressure, high cholesterol and smoking,” Penesetti said. “Other risk factors include diabetes and obesity. Many patients discover they are living with one or more of these risk factors during a routine physical, so again, it is important to keep those appointments.”

To keep potential risk factors at bay, Penesetti recommends getting about 150 minutes of exercise per week, making healthy food choices that include lots of fruits and vegetables and lean meats and limiting alcohol and

caffeine.

If you know you are living with one or more of the risk factors for heart disease, talk with your doctor about how you can lower or eliminate them to improve your health, such as Arif Ahmad increasing physical activity and improving diet choices.

“The pandemic is not the time to let healthy choices slide,” said cardiology nurse practitioner Sam Cook. “In fact, this time in our lives, more Sam Cook than any, is the time to stay vigilant with our healthy choices.”

Officials at the Rock County Public Health Department announced last week that people age 65 and over without a regular health care provider now have a way to request the COVID-19 vaccine in Rock County.

If you are eligible for the vaccine, but do not have a regular health care provider, you can visit the Rock County Public Health Department’s website at co.rock.wi.us/publichealth and click on the Coronavirus link to fill out a request form.

Request forms are now available for health care workers, first responders — including fire and police — and individuals age 65 and over without a regular health care provider.

Behavioral health providers, funeral home workers, massage therapists, security personnel, spiritual care providers, those that provide therapy services, those that provide transportation to health care appointments, and many others are among the list of currently eligible health care workers. If you are currently eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine and would like to request to be vaccinated, fill out the appropriate form on the Rock County Public Health Department website.

As the vaccination process continues, more groups of people will be become eligible to receive the vaccine “Remember that once you are eligible, you are always eligible,” according to a health department news release. “You can never ‘miss’ your chance to be vaccinated.

“It may take some time, but everyone that would like a COVID-19 vaccine will be able to get one.”

Upon entering Monroe Arts Center, guests will be greeted by the gallery director and asked to sanitize their hands and wear a mask. Masks are required to be worn when visiting the arts center.

Temperature and medical screenings will be performed on all guests.

Visitors with a temperature of over 100.4 or who are experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19, along with their group, will be asked to resched-

ule their visit after 14 days.

Guests will have 30 minutes to tour the exhibit. All other parts of the building will be closed.

Scammers move in as vaccine rolls out, BBB warns COVID-19 vaccine distribution is in full swing, and scammers have been quick to take advantage. BBB Scam Tracker is getting reports of cons ranging from calls phishing for personal information, to phony messages claiming you need to pay to guarantee your dose.

How the scam works You get a phone call, a social media message or an email saying that you are eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. It appears to comes from a friend, a public health official or someone from a local hospital or clinic.

You start to schedule your appointment, but you quickly find there’s a catch. The person who contacted you needs personal information or requires you to pay upfront.

For example, in one version reported to BBB Scam Tracker, a phony caller claims that he or she needs your Medicare number and home address.

“I gave (the scammer) my Medicare number and confirmed my name and address,” one victim reported. “He said he was going to come out to my house to administer the (COVID-19) test, and then the vaccine but he never showed.”

In another version, scammers are impersonating people on social media, contacting their “friends,” and claiming that — if paid — they can “guarantee… the vaccine ASAP.” In yet another version, scammers

are offering vaccine shots for as low as $150, on apps and through email.

No matter what scammers insist, be sure to check it against information from your local government or official news sources. Even if you don’t pay up, sharing personal information with scammers opens you up to the risk of identity theft.

The artwork of contemporary American painter Gabe Pionkowski is featured in an exhibit at the Monroe Arts Center through April 6. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

Pionkowski is a visual artist based in Madison who earned a master of fine arts degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a bachelor of arts degree in art education from Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas, after studying in Italy at the Florence University of the Arts.

Pionkowski has been awarded residencies at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine and the Millay Colony of the Arts in Austerlitz, New York. He was a Milton and Sally Avery Endowed Fellow at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Massachusetts, and was awarded a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in 2016.

“My paintings are made by deconstructing canvas thread by thread, hand painting each thread, and reconstructing them on a traditional handloom. The majority of the work presented in this exhibition has focused on painting back onto the newly constituted plane,” Pionkowski said in explaining his work. “These

Performing arts center looks ahead Shakespeare project, musical production on the horizon

Officials at the Janesville Performing Arts Center are developing new programming, thanks to a grant from the Janesville Foundation.

“The COVID-19 pandemic continues to be monitored and the PAC is remaining flexible with the rollout of these new programs to make sure they have the best opportunity for success and that the facility can produce these projects for the community safely,” a news release said.

The new programs include: • Outdoor Shakespeare project: JPAC looks to work with local partners to bring free Shakespeare to the community, most likely in mid- to late July.

• Speak Out Students: This program was originated by the Janesville School District and was extremely popular in the early 1990s.

This speech competition will be for students from the ages of 7 to 18. Students will be placed in divisions based on age, with each division being a little more challenging. The younger students will just get used to public speaking while high school students are asked to present a “TED talk”-like presentation that focuses on a current issue in the community and recommends how to tackle it.

• Large-scale musical: JPAC organizers are hoping to produce a large musical in January 2022.

“Musicals are usually very expensive to produce and the PAC has found support to have a large musical project as a major lynch pin in its annual local talent month,” the news release said.

Larson’s connection to the industry started at home: He and his wife own and operate a small poultry farm producing free-range brown eggs, located just down the road from the dairy farm where Larson grew up.

In his new role, Larson wants to produce real economic impact for farm clients by providing technical assistance on farm finances and aiding their pursuit of loans, grants and other financing to help grow their businesses.

“Andy brings a wealth of experience, and it’s wonderful to add this skill set to support our Wisconsin farm entrepreneurs,” FFI Founder and Director Tera Johnson said in the release. “We’re proud to have him on our team.”

Larson earned bachelor’s degrees from University of Notre Dame, a master’s degree in natural resources and environmental sciences from the University of Illinois and a master of business administration from Iowa State University.

Hunters registered 4,600 wild turkeys during Wisconsin’s fall season, an increase of 21% over the 2019 harvest.

Fall wild turkey harvest climbs 21%, DNR reports

More turkeys were harvested in 2020 than the previous year, according to new data released by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Hunters registered 4,600 birds during the fall 2020 wild turkey season, a 21% increase compared to the 3,792 turkeys registered during the 2019 fall season.

In total, 81,710 harvest authorizations were issued for the 2020 fall

season, an increase of 6,935 from 2019. Of the harvest authorizations issued, 76,748 were awarded with a fall turkey license, and 4,962 were sold over-the-counter as bonus harvest authorizations. This fall, the department issued 271 more fall bonus harvest authorizations than in 2019.

awarded one harvest authorization for the zone of their choice. In addition to the harvest authorization included with a fall turkey license, a total of 14,000 bonus harvest authorizations were available for purchase in zones 1-4.

The harvest success rate in 2020 was 5.6%, very close to the harvest success rate of 5.1% in 2019. The success rate is calculated based on the number of harvest authorizations sold and is not corrected for non-participation.

“In 2020 we saw a large increase in hunting license sales likely due to COVID-19 and an increased public interest in outdoor recreation,” Alaina Gerrits, DNR assistant upland wildlife ecologist, said in a news release. “Fall turkey hunting license sales were no exception, and hopefully this sparked interest and recruited new hunters who will participate for years to come.

“We are fortunate to have such a robust and healthy turkey population that can support both a spring and fall harvest season in Wisconsin.”

The department first initiated a fall turkey season in 1989 after an increase and expansion of turkeys throughout the state. Since then, hunters have been able to pursue turkeys during both the fall and spring seasons.
