Lady Cards pick up pair of wins By Trenten Scheidegger

Historical society meeting........... 3
Brian Kammerer and his Lady Cards began the final week of their regular season with a home game against the McFarland Spartans, last Monday. It was the second time these teams would meet this season and there was plenty of reason to be excited as the first game featured a nail-biter of a finish that went in favor of McFarland by a score of 49-48. Still, the Spartans came in as underdogs as the Cards held a record of 13-7 while McFarland sat at 9-11. It was another slow start as the Cardinals struggled to find the basket in the first half. Fortunately, their aggressive defense has given opposing teams the same fits as they have managed to keep themselves in multiple games where their shot was not falling this season. It was much of the same on Monday as the Lady Cards managed only eighteen points in the first half, but they were able to hold McFarland to just twenty points of their own. Abbie Dix was the driving force offensively in the first half for Brodhead. She racked up eleven points, shooting three for three at the free throw line, and grabbed a number of rebounds before the break. Despite her impressive play, the Cardinals still found themselves trailing by two as they went into halftime. As they have done many times this season, the Cards found their offensive rhythm in the second half. Carissa Purdue, who had just two first half points, had the hot hand as she tallied sixteen points following the break. She did her damage at the charity stripe, shooting eight of nine at the free throw line. Kiarra Moe, who had five points in the first, found her momentum as well as she added eleven points to her total in the second. Dix carried her success from the first half over into the second as she contributed another eight points to the team’s efforts.
The trio’s hot shooting helped propel the Cardinals back into the lead. Combined with their solid defense, Brodhead was able to not only recapture the lead, but hold off the Spartans until the final buzzer hit on a 59-56 victory for the Brodhead Cardinals. Dix led the team with nineteen, Purdue finished just behind her with eighteen, and Moe was the third leading scorer with sixteen. Moe had a pair of three-pointers on the evening. The following Thursday, the Cardinals made the trip to Beloit to face off with the Trojans. Thursday’s matchup featured another exciting game as the Cardinals and Trojans battled until the very end. The first half was a back and forth matchup as the teams went into halftime tied at 21. The energy only increased in the second half as the game neared a photo finish. The Cardinals were able to work out a solid lead with only a few min-

utes left to play, but Beloit Turner was able to go on a late run to keep things interesting. Turner had a late opportunity to force overtime with a three-pointer, but it banked off the back of the rim and Brodhead went on to win another game by three points with a score of 54-51. The Cardinals were led by Moe who put up twenty-one points in an impressive outing. Dix was the next leading scorer with thirteen and Purdue finished behind her with eleven. The trio has continued to provide outbursts of offense when Brodhead has needed it most. The two tight wins were big for the Cardinals as they were able to tally their fifteenth victory of the season, ending their regular season record at 15-7, which was enough to earn a home playoff game in the regionals. Coach Kammerer’s squad is hot at the right time as they head into the playoffs riding a three-game win streak.
