(Left) Brodhead Area EMS was started on Dec. 16, 1989 after many months of planning and organizing. Overall business of the organization is handled by a Board of Directors, consisting of five crew members and four non-crew members. The team currently has 28 volunteer crew members, consisting of 24 EMTs and four drivers.

Brodhead Optimists call for Student Essay Contest entries The Brodhead Optimist Club is encouraging students from all area Wisconsin schools, including home schools, to contemplate the phrase, “Is Optimism the Key to Achieving the Dreams you Imagine?” which is the theme of the 2020 Optimist International Essay Contest. The essays will be due by 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 19, and when judging is complete the First Place winner will receive $100 and a medallion, and his or her essay will be sent to the District level where the District winner will receive a $2500 scholarship. The second place winner will receive $75.00, the third place $50.00, and both will also be awarded medallions. .Any student who was not yet 18 years old as of Oct. 1, 2019, and has not graduated from high school, is eligible to submit an essay, and may obtain an application, including all contest rules, at the Brodhead and Juda high school and middle school offices, the Parkview Junior/Senior High office, the Albany school office, or the Brodhead Public Library. Entries may be turned in at any of these sites. Any questions regarding the contest can be directed to Mary Lou McCormick, 608-558-5488. The Optimist motto is, “Bringing out the Best in Kids,” and the organization’s goal is to encourage young people in order to bring out the best in each of them. Young students today have so many fresh ideas about the world and their future, and the essay contest is a great opportunity for them to tap into their creativity and pursue possible scholarships at the same time. The local club has been participating in the Optimist Essay Contest for many years, and its members have been gratified by the thoughtful writing that it has generated. Chime in regarding this timely topic and qualify to win a $2500 scholarship!

WILMA JEAN BROWN Wilma Jean Brown, age 92, passed away on Feb. 2, 2020 while at the Monroe Hospice Home while surrounded by her family.

Wilma was born on Aug. 23, 1927 in Freeport, IL, the daughter of Willard and Elsie (Reed) Lapp. She married Francis H. Brown on Nov. 25, 1948 at the Dakota United Methodist Church. Francis preceded her in death on May 29, 2016.

Wilma liked crafts, macramé, sewing, crocheting, beading and embroidery.

Gardening many beautiful flowers and canning from her vegetable garden gave her much joy. She also enjoyed nature, reading National Geographic , Ideal magazines and had a great interest history. Wilma enjoyed listening to Bid Band and Christmas music. Wilma volunteered with the Davis Fire Dept Women’s Auxiliary & belonged to Davis Calvary United Methodist Church.

Wilma is survived by her 5 children, Lana (Mike) Woodruff, Pam (Bob) Klever, Bill Brown, Elaine (Claudie) Kellicut and LuAnn Ward; a sister, Garnet Schlueter; nine grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Wilma is preceded in death by her parents, Willard and Elsie Lapp; her husband Francis in 2016 and two siblings, Ellsworth Lapp and Geraldine Groves.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be direct to the Monroe Hospice House in her memory, N3252 County Highway N, Monroe WI 53566.

Memorial services were held at the DL Newcomer Funeral Home on Sunday, Feb. 9. Cremation rites have been accorded and burial will take place at a later date.
