Welty Environmental Center hosts 15th Maple Sugar Fest
Get ready for the sap to flow and the syrup to boil!
Welty Environmental Center is hosting its 15th Maple Sugar Fest on Saturday, Feb. 25, from 8 a.m. to noon at Big Hill Center, located at 1201 Big Hill Court in Beloit.
The morning will be filled with maple sugar-themed activities, such as hikes to the sugar bush, a condenser boiling sap down to make syrup, children’s story time, basket weaving, and take-home crafts.
There will also be a delicious pancake breakfast featuring real maple syrup, sausage, apple sauce, hot drinks, and milk. The cost is $10 for adults ($7 for Welty members), $5 for kids 3-12, and children 2 and under eat for free.
Tickets will be available at the door and visitors are encouraged to bring their own
utensils and mugs to cut down on waste generated by the event. “We look forward to hosting folks at Big Hill Park and sharing this late-winter tradition after two years off because of Covid,” said Brenda Plakans, Welty’s executive director.
“The program staff has a wonderful hands-on experience for visitors after they eat their pancakes. Folks will be able to taste sap as it comes out of the tree, try their hands at drilling a hole in a tree trunk, and warm themselves by a bonfire while they see how much sap it takes to make a bottle of syrup (almost 40 gallons).”
This is Welty’s 15th Maple Sugar Fest, and the event has always emphasized the maple sugaring tradition in Wisconsin.
Welcoming another change for our little community newspaper
By Tony Ends DEPARTING EDITOR
It’s time again for me to step aside from editing The Independent-Register I spent most of this past Saturday introducing new editor Robin Orvino to the paper, to Brodhead, and to the surrounding community that I’ve called home since 1994.
If you subscribe to this weekly paper and read it regularly, you’ll recall I agreed last May to edit the paper temporarily.
It’s the fifth time I’ve edited The Independent-Register since 2015.
This process of using the early run of sap to create maple sugar was introduced to European settlers by Native Americans as a strategy for getting through the last months of winter before spring food resources became available. Maple sugar was used as a seasoning, as well as a treat, and was at the center of early spring celebrations.
The morning will feature much of this history, as well as a delicious breakfast. “Come enjoy the early signs of spring-rain or shine (or snow) at Welty, “ said Plakans. “There’s something for everyone and it’s a fun, and tasty, way to learn more about Wisconsin history!”

Family Services names Tschudy to Resource Development post
Family Services of Southern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois, Inc., has hired Jenny Tschudy as its new Resource Development Director.
Tschudy, who joined the nonprofit in January 2023, will be responsible for building and cultivating relationships with current and potential donors, to help the agency with its mission.
That mission is restoring and enhancing lives in our community through advocacy, education, counseling and case management.
Tschudy, who has lived in Janesville for 39 years, joins Family Services with nearly a decade of experience. For the past seven years she served at Forward Janesville, Inc. (FJI), as Membership Development, Marketing & Events Director. Her role included managing
and facilitating three major fundraising events and 12 or more networking events annually. She also served as membership recruitment and retention liaison for more than 500 area businesses in Janesville, Beloit and surrounding communities.
One of the things Tschudy enjoys most is meeting people from all demographics.
“I am excited to meet new people, talk to those I already know, and grow the donor base so Family Services can continue to provide important and quality services to those most vulnerable,” Tschudy said in a release on her hiring.
“The impact that Family Service’s work has on its clients is life-changing. I’m honored to be a part of this organization.”
Family Services provides financial planning, parenting support, therapy and counseling, legal advocacy, and community outreach. Its programs include DEFY Domestic Abuse Beloit, Individual & Family Counseling Program, Sexual Assault Recovery Program, Praxis Employee Assistance Program, Youth2Youth 4 Change, and The Neighborhood Resilience Project.

dent-Register from time to time. That will be as much as my full-time job writing and editing for a federal agency permits.
That job of three years is based in the Washington, D.C. metro area, and I’m actually writing this column from there this week.
So many good people, groups, and public servants contribute time and talent to the life and lives of our Brodhead and Green-Rock county-line area.
I’ve covered the tasks when editors needed a vacation or had a family emergency. I’ve done so when editors moved away, or took other jobs, or devoted time to loved ones who needed them.
Once again, it’s been challenging to juggle editing responsibilities with other life and work tasks. Yet it’s been as deeply rewarding as any position I’ve held in journalism across 43 years.

Robin is as committed to public affairs reporting as I am.
Like me, she’s devoted herself to studying journalism and putting what she knows to work for all sorts of publications.
Like me, she has a deep respect for all people, genuine interest in their stories,
loyalty to public service.
No one can edit a 16-page publication alone on deadline every week without making mistakes – no matter how hard he or she tries.
We must be graceful to ourselves and to each other.
We don’t wish anyone harm. We don’t make errors or misunderstand one another deliberately.
When we make or repeat the mistakes of others, we can and do print an apology and correction – if we know to do so.
Honest communication is part of a shared community newspaper’s mission to inform one another.
It supports a broader mission to sustain a quality of life in the present and preserve a historical record and legacy for our children and grandchildren.
Many, many people in the Brodhead area have kept that newspaper mission alive across 162 years.
Your support, with my continued support, keeps that history, that mission and purpose, alive.
Thank you. It’s always a pleasure serving with you.

Executive Leadership Breakfast is March 9
SWWRPC Executive Director to speak on Leadership in Changing Times
By Tracy Brewer GC DEVELOPMENT CORP
On Wednesday, March 9, Troy Maggied from the Southwest Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission (SWWRPC) will share rural trends and best practices for moving forward positively. He will specifically talk about ways to collaborate with one another to form a stronger county overall.
Green County is like many rural communities in the nation. Populations are declining, housing options are limited, and labor shortages are apparent.
In order to maintain the quality of life small towns appreciate, challenges that threaten that must be addressed.
Green County Development Corporation (GCDC) is hosting the event as a springboard for building collaborative efforts to address these problems longer term.
As a non-profit, GCDC is the bridge between public and private partnerships aimed to serve our county’s economic development efforts.
The Executive Leadership Breakfast will be at Monroe Arts Center, 1315 11th St., Monroe.
Doors open at 7:30 a.m.; the breakfast buffet begins at 7:45 a.m. Maggied’s talk will begin at 8 a.m. and will conclude at approximately 8:30 a.m.
Attendees are encouraged to come with questions and ideas.
The event is free, but pre-registration is requested by Wednesday, March 1. Register at GCDCBreakfast2023.eventbrite.com, by emailing gcdc@tds.net or calling at 608-328-9452.

Sled safe: Five snowmobile fatalities reported so far in 2023
Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources reports five snowmobile fatalities so far this month and urges all snowmobile operators to make safety the top priority for every ride.
The loss of these five lives is nothing short of tragic and our condolences go out to the families.
“One fatality is one too many. This is not the way the DNR wants to start the new year. We welcome all snowmobilers, resident and out-of-state visitors. We want everyone to enjoy the fun and to share the trails safely,” said DNR Off-Highway Vehicle Administrator Lt. Jacob Holsclaw.
“We strongly urge snowmobilers to operate within their abilities, keep their speed in check and wait to enjoy adult beverages until they are home.”
The five snowmobile fatal crashes involved single adult operators, ranging from 42 to 68 years old. In addition, four of the five victims were males. These crashes are under investigation.
A snowmobile operator in Barron County on Rice Lake failed to negotiate a curve and struck a tree. The crash victim passed away on Jan. 22 due to injuries sustained in the crash.
Another snowmobile operator struck a tree as he was leaving his residence in Vilas County. The victim died from his injuries on Jan. 22.
A third operator/victim was traveling on a public trail, failed to negotiate a curve, and struck multiple trees.
Yet another Vilas County snowmobile operator died in an accident. The victim was second in a group of four. On a straight stretch of trail go-
ing into a curve, the operator/ victim rear-ended the snowmobile in front of her and sustained fatal injuries.
Another snowmobile operator in Oneida County was last in a group of four. When crossing a highway, the victim and his snowmobile were struck by a pickup truck.
You can view a brief synopsis of fatal snowmobile crashes at dnr.wiscosin.gov/topic/ snowmobile/CrashInfo.
Family notifications and identification of the deceased are handled by local officials. Keep these snowmobile safety tips top of mind when you hit the trail
