Santa plans cruise around Brodhead Keith and Becky Cleasby of KC Lawn Care are sponsoring a Brodhead visit by the jolly old elf himself on Sunday, Dec. 13.

Starting at noon, Santa will cruise the streets of Brodhead, following a route similar to that used for parades last summer.

“With many things being canceled, postponed or drastically changed this year due to the pandemic, we wanted to bring some joy to kids in town who

count on seeing Santa every year before Christmas,” Keith Cleasby said in an email. “While our first priority is the health and well-being of our family and our community, we feel that it is important to carry on the traditions and the magic and beauty of the holiday season for kids of all ages.”

Santa will ride on a specially decorated trailer, similar to a parade float, pulled by Cleasby’s pickup truck, he said.

“Please be respectful and maintain a one-reindeer distance away from anyone you don’t live with, including Santa,” a news release advised.

Cleasby, a longtime Brodhead resident and Brodhead business owner since 2016, said Santa will only be making one lap around town.

“As you know, Santa is a very busy man and he wants to see as many kids as he can before Christmas,” Cleasby said.

A real Christmas tree gives a festive feeling to any home, but officials are reminding people that live trees need water daily and should be kept away from sources of heat.

TERRY LEE WENGER Terry Lee Wenger, age 69, of Brodhead, passed away on Dec. 3, 2020, at the Monroe Hospital.

Terry was born March 3, 1951, in Monroe, the son of John and Bell (Knudtson) Wenger.

Terry married Donna Meyer on April 22, 1972, and she preceded him in death in 2013.

Terry was the owner of the Wenger Bait and Repair shop for many years. He drove bus for the Brodhead School district, but most of all he enjoyed working and fixing up old cars.

Terry is survived by two children, Jason Wenger and Sara Wenger, both of Brodhead; four grandchildren, Katie Wenger, Tasha Swan, Blaze Collier and Jasmine Collier; and two great-grandchildren, Athena Carreras and Izac Kasten.

Terry was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Donna, in 2013; and a brother, Ernie Wenger.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the family in his memory.

A public visitation will be held at the DL Newcomer Funeral Home in Brodhead from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Thursday, Dec. 10. Private family services will be held at a later date, with burial concluding at the Luther Valley Cemetery in rural Brodhead.

Albany notes winter parking restrictions Village of Albany officials are reminding residents about parking rules after snowfall.

After a snowfall of more than 1 inch, no parking is allowed from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. on the following streets: • Main Street, from the Sugar River bridge to Mechanic Street • Milwaukee Street, between Water and Mechanic streets • Oak Street • Water Street, from Milwaukee Street to the village storage shed Parking is prohibited on all other village streets for 24 hours after snowfall of 1 inch or more or until snow removal is completed.

Vehicles that violate snow emergency parking may be towed, at the owner’s expense, at the direction of the police chief.

Most home fires caused by candles occur on Christmas Eve, Christmas and News Year’s Day. Never leave a burning candle unattended, and make sure they are kept at least 12 inches away from flammable materials.

Never place candles where children or pets could accidentally knock them over. Instead of lighting real candles, consider using battery-operated flameless candles.

Check your smoke alarms to make sure they are working properly. Alarms should be located on every level of your home and be tested monthly. Smoke detectors also should be replaced every 10 years. Create an escape plan with your family and practice it.

Village hall closes to in-person business The Albany Village Hall recently closed to foot traffic in an effort to help slow the spread of COVID-19 and protect city staff and residents.

State officials are reminding Wisconsin residents that open enrollment runs through Tuesday, Dec. 15, for a health care plan through the Affordable Care Act’s Health Insurance Exchange.

Residents may go online to healthcare.gov to enroll in a plan for 2021.

Between Nov. 1 and Nov. 21, more than 57,500 Wisconsinites enrolled through the exchange, officials said in a news release.

The holiday season is a great time for putting up festive decorations, but it can also bring dangerous fire hazards into your home. Officials at ReadyWisconsin are encouraging residents to keep fire safety in mind this time of year.

“There are many fire hazards to be aware of when decorating for the holidays,” Darrell L. Williams, Wisconsin Emergency Management administrator, said in a news release. “By taking some simple precautions, you can help to greatly reduce the risk for you and your family.”

Christmas trees and other live greenery should be checked to ensure they are fresh before they are brought into your home. Look for things like brown or loose needles, which can be a sign of dryness. Make sure trees are watered daily and kept away from heat sources or open flames.

Live Christmas trees can catch fire in a matter of seconds. While many artificial trees may be flame resistant, that does not mean they are fireproof.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 160 home fires each year between 2014 and 2018 that started with a Christmas tree. Of those fires, 45 percent were linked to problems with electrical distribution or lighting equipment and 22 percent were caused by a heat source being too close to a tree.

GOP official bucks Trump and draws backlash

Knowing he would probably face fierce criticism, Rohn Bishop raised a dissenting voice while some of his fellow conservatives argued in favor of invalidating votes in Wisconsin.

In a Nov. 21 post on Twitter, he said he’d spent the past decade refuting claims that state Republicans were “trying to disenfranchise people” with voter ID and signature laws. But the campaign of President Donald Trump had gone too far, he said, in legal challenges aimed at tossing out votes during the recounts in mostly liberal Dane and Milwaukee counties. The counting was completed Sunday, adding 87 votes to Joe Biden’s winning total.

“Now here we are, trying to disenfranchise people,” he said on Twitter.

“These voters did nothing wrong.

There’s no fraud. We’re pushing for a drawdown (in votes counted) based on a technicality!”

As chairman of the Republican Party of Fond du Lac County, he acted in defense of the party’s long-term interests, he said. But as a rare conservative voice rejecting pervasive but baseless claims of vote fraud on social media, he faced an intense backlash from conservatives throughout the state. Those responding to the post have called him a range of names including “useful idiot” — and worse.

“I had 48 hours of where it was — it almost broke me,” Bishop told Wisconsin Watch.

Raised in a Waupun household where a photograph of Richard and Pat Nixon hung behind his parents’ bar, Bishop is “all-in on the Republican Party,” he said. After serving a few terms on the Waupun City Council, Bishop got involved with the county GOP during the 2008 presidential cycle and became chairman in 2017. He also regularly contributes to the conservative news and opinion website RightWisconsin — which also has editorialized against Trump.

Bishop believes trying to invalidate votes in Dane and Milwaukee counties harms his party’s brand — not to mention trust in democracy. Wisconsin Watch’s email requesting comment on Bishop’s criticism was not immediately returned by Andrew Hitt, chairman of the Republican Party of Wisconsin.

“I’m honestly trying to keep the Republican Party from doing something it’s going to seriously regret,” Bishop said. “By that I mean going into Milwaukee County and throwing out a bunch of African Americans’ votes. I don’t think that’s a particularly good look.”

Wisconsin Watch: You said that you had spent the past decade pushing back against the idea that Republicans were attempting to suppress votes by enacting requirements such as voter ID.

You have the same right to vote that I do. I don’t want to take that right away from you. I just want to make sure that when you say who you are, that you are who you are, and that the number of votes and voters all adds up. If I win, great. If I lose, I’ll work harder in the future.’ I still hold that position.

Where I’m upset with the recount effort now is that they’re going after absentee ballots. So, I always vote early in person because it exists and it’s convenient, right? You just go in, you fill out your ballot, the clerk’s your witness, they fold it and put it in the envelope. We’ve been doing it that way for 15 years. And now the Trump people are claiming that technically, by state law, you’re supposed to have to fill out a paper request for that ballot because it is technically an absentee ballot.

Well, great, you should have told us that like six months ago because that’s how half the state voted.

Now they’re trying to throw those ballots out in Dane and Milwaukee because those are the two most Democratic counties. If they can get that done, Trump can win Wisconsin because he’ll be throwing out a whole lot of Biden votes. And I just think that’s going too far because that’s not voter fraud and those people who voted did nothing wrong. … I don’t agree with how they voted, but I don’t think they did anything illegal, improper or nefarious — they just went and voted.

Throwing out those votes I think is a bridge too far for me, and that’s where I’m breaking with this effort.

Wisconsin Watch: What was the reaction like to your Twitter thread?

Bishop: Monday and Tuesday of this (past) week was a sh-- show of just hateful stuff coming my way from Republicans who should know better.

I didn’t even oppose the president doing the recount because it was a close election and I had no problem taking a second look at it. If it helps voters understand that it was a fair and clean election, I think that’s a good thing.

But this went off the rails now where they’re just trying to kick out people’s votes. So far, from what I can tell, in Wisconsin, they found one fraudulent vote; it was caught by the clerk and the person is facing two felonies. The system appears to have worked. This election is getting a closer look than any other one. People keep telling me there’s all this fraud, there’s all this fraud; I haven’t seen any yet. I’m real-

ly open to it, because if there is, I want to clean it up and have a clean election.

It’s just not happening. I don’t know what to tell people because I feel like we live in two different worlds: They see an election that was stolen and I just don’t.

Wisconsin Watch: Do you think conservatives’ yearlong effort to cast doubt on the legitimacy of the presidential election has done long-term damage to our democracy?

Bishop: I think so. I’m not an expert in any sense of the imagination, but for whatever reason I started studying more about voter fraud and how the whole election system works. A lot of it is tied into, by coincidence, back in late May, when the president started attacking mail-in voting. I had a tweet that caught a lot of attention, where I pointed out that there is no more evidence of vote fraud with mail-in voting as there is with regular voting. And I pushed back on that because I spent a good chunk of the summer arguing that I want Republican voters who are afraid of COVID to vote by mail so we can get their ballots in.

The system works. And we’ve cast so much doubt on it, the Republicans, when they lose an election, they don’t believe it — and that’s not healthy for democracy.

Wisconsin Watch: Why do you think more elected representatives in your party haven’t spoken out against these unfounded attacks on our elections system?

Bishop: They’re afraid. That’s the

base of our party, and they don’t want to lose their jobs. I don’t get paid for this job; anyone can have it, honestly. … A lot of them, they’re just hoping this blows over in a couple of weeks, that after January 20 it will just go back to normal. I don’t know if that’s the case.

Wisconsin Watch: Where is this push to cast doubt on the legitimacy of the vote and to discount ballots headed?

Bishop: I don’t know this, but I think there is a lot of state elected Republicans who are waiting until Tuesday (Wisconsin’s certification deadline), and when the recount wraps up, the vote is the vote, a lot of them will come out and say, ‘OK, we’ll take a look at absentee voting rules moving forward, and if they need to be tweaked or something, we can do that. But there is no fraud in this election and we need to move on and approve the (Joe) Biden slate of electors at the Legislature.’

That’s where the pushback’s going next. That’s where the Vicki McKennas and David Clarkes are going to turn their attention, is to yell ‘fraud’ and try to get the state Legislature … to send the Trump electors.

Wisconsin Watch: Do you find the trend of conspiratorial thinking being normalized by conservative social media influencers such as McKenna and Clarke alarming?

Bishop: Yes. I don’t know why it’s happening. It’s like the QAnon thing:

Baseball manager aims to Alliant Energy invites repeat winning ways in Beloit scholarship applicants Baseball America announced recently that the Pensacola Blue Wahoos have been selected as the 2020 recipient of the Double-A Bob Freitas Award, given to the organization of the year at each level of the Minor Leagues. The Blue Wahoos are owned and managed by Quint Studer, who also manages the Beloit Snappers franchise.

“We’re thankful to Baseball America for this recognition. It is a testament to the team’s involvement and impact on the local community,” Studer said in a news release. “The Blue Wahoos held hundreds of safe, affordable community events at their stadium throughout the year and dedicated over 1,000 hours to community service, helping achieve our mission to improve the quality of life in our community.”

The Blue Wahoos were one of Minor League Baseball’s most active franchises during the 2020 year despite the cancelation of the season, holding more than 200 community events throughout the year. The team made national and international headlines in May when they transitioned their full ballpark into an Airbnb

available for fans to rent for overnight stays.

Away from the ballpark, the team performed more than 1,000 hours of volunteer work in the community, helping their city recover from the damages of Hurricane Sally and starting a volunteer staffing program that allowed local nonprofits to request staffing help from the team.

The Bob Freitas Award, also won

by Pensacola in 2016, completes a triple crown of major awards for the Blue Wahoos in 2020. The team was selected as the Ballpark Digest Best-Double A Ballpark recipient in July and the winner of the Minor League Baseball Golden Bobblehead for Best Overall Promotion for the stadium Airbnb in September.

“Our mission with Beloit Baseball is to improve the quality of life in the Rock County community, and we plan for Beloit to be competing for the same awards in 2021,” Studer said. “The Blue Wahoos won Ballpark of the Year in 2020, and thanks to the support of Diane Hendricks and others in the community, we expect ABC Supply Stadium in downtown Beloit to compete for that award in 2021.

Restaurant association highlights COVID-19 mitigation measures The Wisconsin Restaurant Association is launching a statewide public awareness campaign to educate the public about what restaurants are doing to keep their customers and employees safe during the pandemic.

The “Ready to Serve Safely” campaign showcases restaurants that are committed to employee and customer safety by following best practices for COVID-19 mitigation.

“It’s important to highlight that so many restaurants are doing everything right to ensure the safety of their customers and their teams,” WRA President and CEO Kristine Hillmer said in a news release.

“Restaurants are being unfairly targeted as possible spreaders of COVID-19, when in reality there is no data that points to individuals being more likely to contract the virus when going to a restaurant.”

Officials at Alliant Energy are seeking applications for their 2021 Innovation Scholarships as the company recognizes outstanding community leadership. Up to 25 students will receive a $1,000 scholarship to help them reach their academic goals.

Applicants for the annual scholarships will be asked to write an essay that identifies a problem in their community and presents an innovative solution using science, technology, engineering and/or math.

Recipients will be selected based on the content of the essay, participation in a leadership role in community service activities and volunteer work, grade-point average and standardized test scores.

People who can be tested at their doctor’s office are encouraged to do so, the release said.

As her senior project, Welsh is organizing the Walk for Family on Saturday, Sept. 26. The two-mile walk will begin at 9 a.m. at the start of the Sugar River Trail in Brodhead.

Community members also may opt to participate by taking their own walking route and collecting donations for the cause, Welsh said in a news release.

The walk will raise money for One Gift, One Child, a ministry of former Brodhead residents Natalie and Pierre Charlotin. Natalie Charlotin is a Brodhead graduate.

“One Gift, One Child serves to prevent orphans and reunite families in the impoverished country of Haiti,” the news release said. “As a ministry, it provides orphaned children, or those put in orphanages by their families, safety from abuse, poverty, rejection, slavery, trafficking and hatred.

“Their end goal is to provide every child a safe environment and eventual reunion with their family. If they do not have a family, they are placed into a foster home that allows them a safe, loving environment to grow up in.”

According to the release, “Investigation of an outbreak of

COVID-19 in any setting involves the same basic public health principles: detection of cases, isolation of ill persons, contact tracing, quarantine of cases and close contacts, laboratory testing and infection control measures in the setting to prevent additional transmission.”

Public health and school district staff members remain in daily communication.

“Additionally, surveillance for ill students or staff are being tracked by the schools and reported regularly to public health,” the release said. “School and public health staff are working together to identify close contacts, notifying close contacts of their potential exposure, and asking them to quarantine.”

Gov. Tony Evers and the Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. recently announced that restaurants and other targeted small businesses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic will receive $45 million in assistance, bringing the total assistance distributed to Wisconsin businesses this year to more than $220 million.

Free COVID-19 testing will be available for anyone 5 years of age and older.

Individuals who need to be tested are asked to register online prior to getting tested. This is to ensure a smooth and efficient process for everyone, according to a health department news release.

Testing will be available while supplies last at the drive-thru sites, which are at the Monroe National Guard Armory, the former Brodhead Fitness Center and the Swiss Center of North America in New Glarus.

Anyone 5 to 17 years old must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian authorized to give consent for the COVID-19 test on their behalf.

People who can be tested at their doctor’s office are encouraged to do so, the release said.

“Their end goal is to provide every child a safe environment and eventual reunion with their family. If they do not have a family, they are placed into a foster home that allows them a safe, loving environment to grow up in.”

“Restaurants and other venues have been among the businesses hit hardest by the COVID-19 pandemic,” Evers said in a news release.

“They’ve made the tough decisions to keep employees and customers safe by restricting indoor seating, offering delivery and curbside pickup and providing outdoor tables.

“We greatly appreciate the changes they’ve made to prioritize the health and safety of our communities, but now with winter coming, we are glad to provide this support at a critical time.”

The program will be administered by the Department of Revenue in collaboration with WEDC. Unlike previous We’re All In grants, businesses will not have to apply for the grants, but will be identified and contacted directly by the DOR based on the businesses’ state tax records.

“We have all the systems in place to quickly disburse funding to these businesses who need it to get through the coming winter months.

Our staff is ready to assist, and I am pleased we are able to help,” DOR Secretary Peter Barca said in the release.

According to preliminary DOR estimates, restaurants will account for roughly 95 percent of the approximately 2,000 businesses to receive the funds. The program will target businesses with annual revenues of more than $1 million and less than $7 million. Previous state grant programs have focused on businesses with annual revenues of less than $1 million.

This is the third phase of the We’re All In grant program from WEDC aimed at helping businesses weather the economic storm created by the pandemic. The first phase provided more than $65 million in grants to more than 26,000 businesses statewide, while the second phase is currently disbursing more than $120 million to more than 24,000 small businesses statewide.

Funding for We’re All In programs comes from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act, which expires on Dec. 31.

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection invites Wisconsin dairy processors to apply for the next round of dairy processor grants through Jan. 15.

The funding is intended to foster innovation, improve profitability and sustain the long-term viability of Wisconsin’s dairy processing facilities. Grant recipients will be announced in February.

Funding from these reimbursement grants can be used to address a wide range of dairy business needs, such as food safety, staff training, plant expansion or modernization and professional consulting services. Eligible applicants must operate a licensed dairy processing plant in Wisconsin that is engaged in pasteurizing, processing or manufacturing milk or dairy products.

Grants will be awarded for projects up to $50,000 and up to two years in duration. The processor is required to provide a match of at least 20 percent of the grant amount.

Recipients will be chosen through a competitive selection process. In 2020, 11 companies received a total of $200,000 in grants.

The dairy processor grant application can be found by going online to datcp.wi.gov/Pages/Growing_WI/DairyDevelopment.aspx.

Applications must be emailed to grants manager Ryan Dunn at RyanD.Dunn@wisconsin.gov by 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15. Applicants who need assistance downloading or completing their application should call 608-590-7239.

My friend starts laughing and says, ‘The look on your face is terrifying.’ …

A lot of talk radio is just bullsh--. I grew up listening to Rush Limbaugh and learned a lot from him. … When I was a kid, Rush Limbaugh was entertaining. He had the parodies and little skits and spoofs; we could make fun of the Democrats while disagreeing with them. The show was funny. If you listen over the last seven, eight years, it’s just, ‘The Democrats are evil, they’re the enemy, and if they win, we’re a socialist country by March 15.’ When every election is the most important election of your lifetime — otherwise the country’s over — that’s how people get so worked up and believe so much stuff.

Wisconsin Watch: How can we stop demonizing political opponents and move forward as a state and union?

I know people who live in that bubble; they have no idea that there’s another half of the country out there that doesn’t agree with them. The same is true on their side: They can listen to NPR — I kind of like NPR, so I don’t mean that as a cheap shot — or watch MSNBC all day and not interact with Republicans. Because you never interact with these people, you can start to believe the crap out there about how evil the other side is, when in a lot of cases they just don’t agree with you.
