That time of year: Brodhead Fire & Ice Festival Brodhead’s Fire & Ice Festival is just around the corner on Dec. 6 and 7.

Don’t miss any of the exciting activities.

FRIDAY, DEC. 6 Fire pits will be burning for roasting hot dogs, marshmallows, and making S’mores. Hot chocolate and chili will be for sale as well, while Christmas music rings Christmas cheer. Great family fun for any age.

Arts & Crafts Fair - The 6th Annual Arts & Crafts Fair will be held in the Bank of Brodhead’s courtesy room.

The hours will be Friday, Dec. 6 from 7-8 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 7 from 8-noon. This will be a chance to mark some gifts off your list.

Gingerbread Creation Display - Homemade Gingerbread Creations will be on display at the Bank of Brodhead. If you are interested in entering your homemade Gingerbread Creation, please visit the Chamber’s website for the form* and rules. There is a $15 entry fee and a chance to win prizes. Judging will be at 6:45 p.m. at the bank.

Sassy Farm Chicks Quilt Co. Display - New this year: Orfordville’s Sassy Farm Chick’s Quilt Co. will have on display at the City Hall, Fri., Dec. 6, from 8 a.m.-6:30 p.m., will have on display their professional quilt workmanship that they have completed for their customers. Fire Pits: You can warm up to fire pits placed on the square where you can purchase and roast hot dogs and marshmallows, and make S’mores. There are family-friendly fees for these food items.

Kettle Corn: Sugar River Kettle

Corn Co. will have for purchase, fresh popped kettle corn, by the gazebo from 4 p.m. to close. This will be offered Fri. only.

Photos with Santa - Photos with Santa comes back this Christmas season and is sponsored by the Sugar River Bank. From 3:30-6:30 p.m. children can have their photos taken with Santa at the previous Harvest Moon, 1101 1st Center Ave, Brodhead. There is no charge. You will fill out a form at the time of the photos.

Selfie Photo Spot - New this year: Located in Tinker’s Garden area, there will be a Selfie Photo Spot for you to take your photo to post to social media.

Horse Drawn WAGON RIDES On Fri. only, the BID and the Brodhead Chamber will be offering the Horse Drawn WAGON rides from 4-6:30

Cindy Lou Who Contest – We are seeking Cindy Lou Who Contest entries. Decorated Pet Contest - Fire & Ice Festival is seeking pet entries for the Lighted Parade. The pets are to be dressed in Christmas costume. The pets will be judged in front of City Hall at 6:30 p.m. on Fri., Dec. 6. Prizes will be awarded from 33 Seeds in Orfordville and Brodhead Chamber: 1st $15, 2nd $10, and 3rd place $5.00. The pets and owners can be in the Lighted Parade and are to check in at 6:45 p.m. at 10th St. and E. 3rd Ave. and will be assigned their spot. All pets must be leashed and controlled with a proper fitting collar and kept away from other pets. Please

refrain from using retractable leashes.

There is no charge for this contest, but there is a form to fill out*.

LIGHTED PARADE - At 7 p.m. on Fri., Dec. 6, the famous Lighted Parade will start, entering 1st Center Ave from 10th St. and traveling to 12th St and turning left. Feature guests in the Lighted Parade will be Santa & Mrs. Clause, Olaf, Christmas Elf, Cindy Lou Who contestants, decorated pets, parade marshalls, many trucks, horses, lighted entries, organizations, groups, business, and much more. Last year we had over 45 entries. The parade will be announced from the tip of Tinker’s Garden , compliments of James Carter.

Frozen T-shirt Contestants - The Fire & Ice Festival is gearing up for the 6th annual Frozen T-shirt Contest, Fri.,

Dec. 6 at 8 p.m. Last year the contest was very popular and lots of fun. The concept is to remove a frozen t-shirt from a zip lock bag and race to see who the first is to thaw the t-shirt and to put it on as if wearing a t-shirt. We are seeking contestants, ages 16 and over to compete for prizes: first place $100, second place $50, and third place $25.

There is a $15 entry fee and form to fill out*.

White Gift 50/50 Raffle - This is the season for giving and the Fire and Ice Festival will be selling 50/50 raffle tickets on Fri., Dec. 6. to benefit Brodhead’s White Gift and one lucky name that is drawn. Juda’s Next Generation 4-H Club hosts Thanksgiving meal The kitchen downstairs in Monroe’s Grace Lutheran Church bustled with activity the afternoon of Nov. 24. As the fourth Sunday, it was the day of the monthly Loaves and Fishes community dinner and, naturally, November’s served as a Thanks-giving feast. This month’s sponsor was Next Generation 4-H Club from Juda, led by Debbie Myers.

She took the lead in the kitchen Sunday, as Next Generation 4-H prepared to welcome up to 200 people, larger than the Loaves and Fishes usual crowd of around 125 to 130 people – about 100 guests and roughly 30 volunteers.

“We’ve have hosted these meals before,” said Myers of her group, the largest 4-H club in Green County. “But we’ve never taken on such a huge undertaking as Thanksgiving,” she said.

We took it as a challenge when the opportunity came open. In just its sixth year, Myers said the club has 122 members and more than 50 adult leaders.

“We’re big enough to do this,” she said.

In order to sponsor this meal — as well as giving back in other ways like donating blankets to hospice and dog toys to the humane society — the club fundraisers all year. “We feel honored to be asked to help when we get the call from organizations that need our assistance.” “Whatever we can do to help, that’s what we do,” said Myers.

All told on Sunday the club prepared 55 pounds of turkey and 45 pounds of homemade mashed potatoes, along with stuffing, corn, squash, marshmallow fruit salad and rolls, accompanied by five gallons of cranberry sauce and two gallons of gravy. They also bought 12 pumpkin pies and three half-sheet cakes for dessert. About 175 to 180 people were served, with just a little bit of food left over.

GIRLS BASKETBALL The girl’s team finished with a 5146 win last Friday, Nov. 22, against Benton. Montana Steinmann was leading scorer and ended the game with 15 points while Taylor Golackson and Maddie Smith ended with 12 points each. The ladies also faced Abundant Life last Tuesday, Nov. 26.

MUSIC DEPARTMENT The music students are now hard at work preparing for the Christmas concert. The annual high school/middle school choir and band concert is Wednesday, Dec. 18, in the Pit Gym. The students are also starting to prepare for solo and ensemble. The band will also be playing pep band at some of the upcoming basketball games! SENIOR LUNCHEON The Senior Citizen Luncheon will be on Dec. 11 from 1-3 p.m. in the Juda Pit Gym. The luncheon will feature the High School Band and Choir and Bingo games.

MASONIC TEMPLE SPAGHETTI DINNER The Masonic Temple will be hosting a Spaghetti Dinner on Tuesday, Dec. 10, from 5 to 7 p.m., in the cafeteria. Pre-purchased tickets for an adult will be $5, and children will be $3. At the door prices for adults will be $6, and children will be $4. Tickets can be purchased at the school office.

SENIOR OF THE WEEK The senior of the week this week is Sarah Farias. Her favorite high school memories are going on class field trips and lunch conversations.

school lunch is sack lunch. If she won the lottery, she would get nice apartments in Chicago and New York, a cabin in Maine, and put the rest in the bank and into stocks. If she could live in one U.S. state for the rest of her life, it would be Maine because of the beautiful scenery and the weather.

MATH DEPARTMENT The two day week proved to be a review week for all math classes except for engineering and calculus.

Engineering is beginning to work on green initiatives to reduce the school’s utilities cost. Calculus is continuing to work with related rates and the second derivative. All other classes had a review day and a test following it.

TOY DRIVE The Juda School District is participating in the Monroe Woman’s Club Annual Toy Drive. We are collecting toys for children ages 0 to 12.

All unwrapped toys to be donated can be brought to the main office now through Monday, Dec. 16.

SENIOR SEMINAR For the next few weeks, the senior class will be coming home with something a little different than expected. The seniors have to take a baby home overnight in order to show them what having a baby is like. If your child does not come home with a baby, then they most likely chose to take care of it at school or took care of a baby in child development.

ACT PREP CLASS An ACT prep class will be held at Evansville High School to prepare for the March ACT State-Mandated Test. Enrollment may be done online at www.wisconsintestprep.com.

FFA FFA scholarships are now open.

The National FFA scholarships aren’t due until Jan. 15. Wisconsin FFA scholarships are due March 15. Fruit orders will be in on Dec. 12. Students who sold enough fruit earned their FFA jackets. ENGLISH The Freshmen in English I are continuing their unit on learning about the correct usage of commas.

The Sophomores in English II are continuing on their gerund unit. The Juniors in English III are starting to write an argumentative essay about any current topic of their choosing.

The Seniors in Written Communication are going to start writing an essay on technology today, while the Seniors in English Honors are going to start reading Utopia.

THE PAW The Paw will have a few more weekly promotions throughout the semester. One of the promotions that will last the rest of the semester is Paw rewards cards. Spend ten dollars at the store and get one dollar of store credit to spend. One of the upcoming promotions: If a student finds a golden ticket that is hidden in the school, they can redeem that ticket for a free item at The Paw up to a certain price.

MIDDLE SCHOOL The middle school had a great time during Terrific Tuesday activities last Tuesday. Many participated in games, and others enjoyed just hanging out their last class period before Thanksgiving break. Be sure to keep up on homework to be able to participate in next month’s activities.

THANKSGIVING PLAY Tuesday, Nov. 26, the Pre-K and Kindergarteners performed their Thanksgiving play for the community. The students sang a variety of Thanksgiving songs including, “We are Helpful,” “I’m a Little Indian,” “Be Thankful,” “Thanksgiving

Song,” and “Sailing.” They held an after-party where they ate snacks and drank punch.

PUMP IT UP Monday, Nov. 25, the elementary was rewarded with a trip to Pump It Up! in Madison. All students who participated in selling the Juda Saver Cards and returned with money were able to attend.

BOYS BASKETBALL The boys’ basketball team will be playing Orangeville the week after Thanksgiving break, on Saturday, Dec. 7. The game will be held at LenaWinslow High School at 1:30 p.m.

TEACHER OF THE WEEK This week’s teacher of the week is Jackie Klar. She has been teaching at Juda School since 1991. She teaches Ancient Civilization, Geography, U.S. History, and 8th grade Math in the middle school as well as STEAM classes for grades k-5 and 7. As the district STEAM coordinator, she is involved with the development of curriculum and programs for our school and with consulting outside our district. Mrs. Klar is also the rocket club advisor and serves on the safety committee. She received her Master’s Degree from UW-Plattville. She loved all her classes in high school because she loves learning about everything. Her favorite animal is the cow.

The Arts and Crafts Fair will be held in the Bank of Brodhead Courtesy Room. Fire & Ice Festival Committee members have approximately 10 booths available for crafters.

Exhibitors are to bring their own display equipment and electrical cords, if they need electricity.

Frozen T-Shirt Contest The Festival is gearing up for the sixth annual Frozen Tshirt Contest. Last year the contest was very popular and lots of fun. The concept is to remove a frozen t-shirt from a zip lock bag and race to see who the first is to thaw the t-shirt and to put it on as if wearing a t-shirt. We are seeking contestants, ages 16 and over to compete for prizes: first place $100, second place $50, and third place $25. There is a $15 entry fee.

Alan Morris receives Hometown Hero Award In October the Orfordville Modern Woodman Youth Group presented the Hometown Hero award to Orfordville resident Alan Morris. Morris received a $50 gift certificate to a local business and was asked to choose a local organization that would receive a $50 do-

nation in his name. Morris chose the Parkview Athletic Department to receive the donation and also contributed $200 more to the department to be used to help pay athletic fees for students who may not have to means to pay to participate in athletics.

Parkview National Honor Society inducts new members The Parkview Chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) inducted fifteen new members on Nov. 14.

The ceremony was held in the JR/SR High commons. The NHS has four pillars that members must meet and uphold to be members: Character, Service. Scholarship and Leadership.

Parkview JR/SR high teacher Joel Schullo was the guest speaker. JR/ SR High Principal Mary Stelter assisted in the presentation of membership. The group’s co-advisors are JR/SR High teachers Suzy Breneman and Guy Stricker.

Herman is survived by her two daughters, Sandra Erickson of Mission, TX and Kathy (Gary) Hoesly of Mountain Home, AR; one son, Terry (Betty) Blum of Brodhead; seven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ann (Tom) Saunders and Dorothy (John) Blum.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; brother, Delbert Blum; sister, Rose Carlwile; and one great-grandson, Deriek Gruber.

A Celebration of Herman’s Life will be held Friday Dec. 6, from 12 NOON – 3p.m. at the Monroe Moose Lodge, 639 3rd Ave. Monroe.

AUSTIN ROBERT HAUSER Austin Robert Hauser, age 40, passed away unexpectedly while at home on November 9, 2019. He was born September 29, 1979 to Robert and Lynette (Lanning) Hauser. Austin’s childhood was spent growing up in Brodhead and was a graduate of Brodhead High School. He spent his recent years working as an electrician, specializing in swimming pool lighting and waterfall features.

Austin served as a volunteer firefighter for 11 years for the Orfordville Fire Department. He always strived to help others, even when he was not on duty.

Austin is survived by his beloved girlfriend Kelli Viele. Austin and Kelli shared life with their faithful constant companions Bella, Rocko, and Zoey.

Austin always had a love for motorcycles, a lifelong passion that started at an early age. He had participated in several motorcycle organizations. His motto was “Live to Ride, Ride to Live.”

He would always be there for his friends. Austin had a caring heart, along with a kind soul. He will be dearly missed.

Austin’s Celebration of Life is Saturday, Dec. 14 at Stables Bar & Grill, 717 Genesis Dr., Orfordville, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Gather to share your happy memories of Austin’s life.

HERMAN HAROLD BLUM Herman Harold Blum, age 94, of Edgerton passed away on Thursday, Nov. 28, 2019 at Agrace HospiceCare in Fitchburg. He was born on April 15, 1925 the son of Oscar and Martha (Blanc) Blum in Clarno Township. He attended school in Jordan Center. Herman was united in marriage to Mildred Marie Hartwig on Aug. 7, 1946 in Wisconsin Dells.

Herman proudly served in the US Army during WWII. He worked for 31 years at GM in Janesville, he retired in 1983. Herman was a longtime member of the Moose Lodge.

He also enjoyed playing the drums

Children can address their letters to Santa and put them in the mailbox for a sure delivery to the North Pole. The North Pole staff has guaranteed that Santa will be answering each of the letters. The box will be available until Saturday, Dec. 29.

Chamber Fire & Ice Window Display - The Brodhead Chamber has a window display on the downtown square, directly right of John’s Barber Shop. Each year, Christmas window decorator, Nancy Sutherland designs the window. This year, we are featuring Brodhead’s new store, 608 The Factory’s Christmas themed works of metal art. In addition, Ken Anderson’s handblown glass Christmas ornaments are on display. We thank Nancy Sutherland, John Meightry, and Gary Sutherland for the hard work on this window display.
