Albany students sing in the season By Beth Blakemore CORRESPONDENT

Albany students performed a pair of concerns to inspire holiday cheer last Monday and Tuesday evenings. Grades three through five collaborated with one performance, while band and choir students from fifth through 12th grades. The first concert opened with “Welcome,” based on a Welsh carol tune. The fifth-grade band then performed “Jolly Old St. Nicholas,” and “Jingle Bells.” The sixth-grade choir sang “Sing We Now of Christmas,” and “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch.” The sixth-grade band played “A Merry Christmas Polka.” Next, the choirs sang a number of tunes, before being joined by the high school band, finishing with “Silent Night.” Rachel Heinschel was the choir director, and JoAnn Hawthorn accompanied on piano. Jacob Luba, band director, said, “The students were engaged musically. They got a valuable music experience out of it.” Luba said the band students had practicing since the beginning of the year on some pieces but on most for about two months. On Saturday, Feb. 17, 2018, the band will be hosting the district’s solo and ensemble production. Six schools will be coming. The elementary concert began with “My Favorite Things,” and concluded

with “Somewhere In My Memory.” It was led by music teacher Rachel Heinschel, accompanied by her mother, Tammi Day, on piano. Speakers were Priscilla Smith, Leon Parker, Elle Modaff, Kaden Zurfluh, Cassi Stiklestad, Kaylee Rodebaugh, Alex Kopp, Alivia Copeland, Abby Hollis, Thomas Hall, Allie Dahl and Lily Morales. Albany school art was featured in the gym, and there was a bake sale for the Music Booster in the hall. BETH BLAKEMORE PHOTOS Brodhead Independent-Register
