Green County Board honors Sheriff’s Department members

If you were able to attend the Dec. 10, 2019 Green County Board meeting, you had the privilege of witnessing two deputies and one lieutenant of the Green County Sheriff’s Department be honored for life-saving actions while on duty. Deputies Steve Hoesly and Warren Yoerger, with Lieutenant Paul Weichbrod, acted quickly and precisely on August 8, 2019 saving the life of an Albany man. It is an amazing feeling knowing we have such dedicated individuals in this county. Also at this meeting, Deputy Cody Kanable was honored with his K9 partner Ike. Ike will be retiring shortly after the new year, having served Green County for 7 ½ years. Ike’s list of accomplishments is impressive, and retirement is well-deserved. Green County is expecting to obtain another K9 after Ike retires.

The board meeting continued with other business resulting in the approval of the nine resolutions and one ordinance presented to the board. These resolutions ranged from transferring delinquent tax certificates from the Green County Treasurer to the Green

County Clerk, approving contracts, to approving a 1% wage increase to county employees, and the elimination and creation of Human Services positions. A full list of the resolutions, including their wording, can be found in the minutes of the December 10 meeting on the county website at www.co.green.wi.gov. Ordinance 19-1201, Modification Relating to Overpayments and Underpayments Received by the County, changed the amount from $2 to $5. Now, if there is an under/over payment to the County of less than $5, a request would need to be made to rectify it. All resolutions and the ordinance passed unanimously by voice vote.

The next board meeting of the Green County Board is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2020 at 7 p.m. in the County Board Room of the Historic Courthouse on the Square in Monroe. All meetings, including committee meetings, are open to the public and posted on the Green County website.

All County Board seats are up for election/re-election at the April 2020 election. There are several current supervisors who are not seeking re-election. If you are interested in running for

County Board, please pick up nomination paperwork at the County Clerk’s office. You need to collect 20 signatures to be nominated and to have your name on the April ballot. Nomination signatures need to be returned to the County Clerk’s office no later than 5 pm on January 7, 2020. If you have questions

about serving on the board, please talk to a supervisor. I would be happy to talk with anyone about my experience.

UWM holds commencement ceremony

City of Brodhead offices for re-election

The offices of Mayor, Judge, and three Alderperson at Large will be up for re-election in the April 7, 2020 Spring Election. All terms are for two years except for the Judge, which is a four-year term. Alderperson Allen Bruce has submitted his non-candidacy, he’s not running.

Alderperson Troy Nyman is running for Mayor and for Alderperson at Large. If elected for both he will then choose which office to serve.

Richard Bennett Sr is running for Judge. Mayor Doug Pinnow and Alderperson at Large Ann Anderson are undecided at this time. If you are interested in running for any of these offices please stop into City Hall for a nomination packet. The deadline for filing nomination papers is 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2020 in the office of the City Clerk.

WRESTLING The Brodhead-Juda Wrestling Team had their first tournament last weekend. Brian McCullough and Jayson Starr both placed second. Brian earned 28 points for the day, and Jayson earned 26. The wrestling team also had their first home opener last Thursday. Brian and Jayson both won their matches. Congrats on a great job!

BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS This past Monday, Jacob Miller, Tana Steinmann, Emily Makos, Triniti Elmer, Taylor Golackson, Allison Starr, and Dixon Starr went to Kuhn to pick up donations for Juda’s BBBS program. The donations included different supplies for the office and games for the kids to use while at the program.

GIRLS BASKETBALL The girls’ basketball team started last week off with a non-conference game in Orangeville. The ladies fought hard but, unfortunately, came home with a loss Monday night.

Ending the week and starting up conference play, the Pecatonica Vikings stirred up a tough match-up with our Panthers. Leading at halftime, the Panthers again went home with a loss. Leading scorer Montana Steinmann finished the game with 18 points while Triniti Elmer came in second with 9 points. Heading on the road this week, the girls will face the Albany Comets and the Barneveld Eagles. Reminder: All games will start at 7 p.m. unless noted otherwise.

MUSIC DEPARTMENT The music students are now hard at work preparing for the Christmas concert. The annual high school/ middle school choir and band concert is today in the Pit Gym. The students are also starting to prepare for solo and ensemble.

MATH DEPARTMENT This week in math, Algebra I is starting to work with substitution while continuing their unit on loans and interest. Geometry is starting to work with the 3D design software SketchUp. Algebra II is continuing their unit about investments. Precalculus is still working on how many ancestors they had in Mesopotamia. Calculus is starting to work on integrals and how to use the antiderivative to find the area underneath a curve.

SENIOR SEMINAR Last week in senior seminar, the seniors continued to work with the real care babies. They also made their family meals and went grocery shopping.

FFA The FFA had a good fruit sale.

Scholarships are still available for seniors. FFA is also going to have an SAE work day over break for state FFA degrees.

SENIOR LUNCHEON The senior luncheon was held on Dec.r 11. The senior citizens really enjoyed the choir/band performance and had a great time playing bingo.

Many seniors were in attendance for the lovely meal and entertainment put on by the senior class.

ENGLISH English I is taking their summative assessment on their comma unit. English II is also taking a summative assessment on their gerund unit. English III is still working on their persuasive essay on a current issue in today’s world. Written

Communication students are working on finishing their last essay and then will be starting their research paper. English Honors is writing a poem this week, which they are very excited about doing.

STEAM The high school students are still continuing to work on their cars in their groups for the King of the Hill contest. The competition will be held at the end of the semester.

MIDDLE SCHOOL Last week, eighth-grade students delivered to all the staff of Juda School a very special greeting! Payton Hinton worked for two days with her mother to create button trees.

Then, her fellow eighth-graders created cards that read, “You are ‘treemendous.’ Thank you for shining a bright light at Juda School.” Finally, the greetings were personally delivered to staff members of Juda School by the eighth-grade class.

BOYS BASKETBALL Last Tuesday, the JV and Varsity played Barneveld in their first home conference game of the season. Both the JV and Varsity lost their games.

The final score of the Varsity game was 25 (Juda) - 59 (Barneveld).

The leading scorers from Juda were Trent Anderson and Payton Johnson with six points each. The boys also played Friday night at Warren, Illinois, for their last game of the week.

The next boys’ basketball games will be Monday, Dec. 16, against Madison Country Day at Juda, followed by a game on Thursday, Dec. 19, at Monticello High School. That will be the last boys’ basketball game until Jan. 3, after winter break.

TEACHER OF THE WEEK This week’s teacher of the week is Jenna Beitz. Ms. Beitz teachers all the Agriculture Education classes. This is only her second year of

teaching. She attended UW-Platteville. Her favorite classes in high school were all of her science and ag classes. Her favorite animals are mini Herefords and horses.

SPANISH CLUB Butter Braids were delivered on Dec. 12. The proceeds from this fundraiser are going to the Spanish Club trip in 2021. Fundraiser ideas are always welcome and encouraged. If a member of Spanish Club suggests an idea, they will receive class dojo points. Once we get to a certain number of points, we will be able to take a small field trip.

SOFTBALL WINTER OPEN GYMS Batting cage open gyms will be open to all students interested in going out for softball in the spring.

The first open gyms will be held at Albany High School over Christmas break on Dec. 22, 23, 26, 27, 29, and 30. The open gyms on Dec. 22, 27, and 29 will be from Noon to 2 p.m., and the remaining dates will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Hope to see you there!

SENIOR OF THE WEEK The senior of the week this week is Triniti Elmer. Her favorite high school memory is attending junior prom. Her favorite teacher is “Mrs.B because she’s easy to talk to and listens when I complain.” Triniti’s future plans are to go to Edgewood for nursing. Her favorite school lunch is sack lunch. If she won the lottery, she would donate some of it and save the rest. If she could live in one state for the rest of her life, she would live in Hawaii because of the beaches and the weather.

LUNCH Thursday, Dec. 19, breakfast will be oatmeal and toast; lunch will be quesadillas, corn, and mixed fruit.

Biofuel rule betrays promise to rural America

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s supplemental proposed rule to compensate for the ongoing misappropriation of small refinery exemptions (SREs) “fails to accurately account for the lost gallons and betrays President Trump’s promise to rural America,” according

In comments submitted today, NFU President Roger Johnson urged the agency to account for all 4 billion gallons worth of demand lost to SREs and to establish provisions to prevent the future abuse of waivers.

“On the campaign trail and now as president, Donald Trump has sworn his allegiance to family farmers and ranchers and promised to uphold policies that ensure their prosperity.

But actions speak louder than words ­– despite those promises, his EPA has repeatedly and deliberately undercut the American biofuels industry, prioritizing the needs of multibillion-dollar oil corporations at farmers’ expense.

“President Trump then vowed to offset all harm caused by the mishan-

dling of small refinery exemptions – yet another promise that he hasn’t kept. Though this supplemental proposed rule would make up for some of the lost demand, it does not go nearly far enough. Rather than calculate renewable volume obligations based on the actual exemptions granted, EPA has inexplicably proposed using a much lower number that would cut hundreds of millions of gallons from the 2020 targets alone.

“At a minimum, EPA must recalculate its obligations and it must reallocate all 4 billion gallons lost to exemptions since Trump took office.

Further, we strongly urge the agency to prevent future abuses by providing greater transparency on both the criteria and the process for granting small refinery exemptions.”

Brodhead Youth Basketball The Brodhead Parks and Recreation Department will be sponsoring a Wednesday afternoon youth basketball program for boys and girls in second and third grades from 3 to 4 p.m. Third grade will meet in January, beginning Jan. 8 and ending Jan. 29. Second grade will meet in February beginning Feb. 5 and ending Feb. 26. This program will teach basic skills and fundamentals.

The grant has a section that asks about fees imposed by the municipalities. Tuffree verified with Clerk Waege that she was not aware of any fees that would be charged by the Village. CALL TO ORDER: President Gary Phillips called the meeting to order Monday, December 9, 2019 at 7:00 p.m.

Present were President Phillips, Tina Suiter Meyers, Beth Schmidt, Chuck Boyce, Terry Gerber, Nikki Tuffree, and Jason Knox. Also present were Joe Thompson, Kate Brown, David Olsen, Kerrie Schmidt, Sarah Strunz, DPW Director Nick Todd, Chief Brian Raupp, and Clerk Sherri Waege.

AGENDA VERIFICATION: Clerk Waege verified that on December 6, 2019, copies of the agenda were delivered to the President and Trustees; and posted at the Village Hall, Library, and the Farmer’s & Merchant’s Bank. There were no additions made to the agenda.

MINUTE APPROVAL: Motion by Boyce, seconded by Knox to approve the November 25, 2019 Regular Board Meeting minutes. Motion carried.

In honor of Respect Life Month, the students of St. Victor School in Monroe, WI held a Baby Bottle Campaign to benefit the Care Net Pregnancy Center of Green County.

Each student took a baby bottle home and asked family and friends to put their spare change in their bottle during Respect Life Month. At the end of the month, the baby bottles were returned to the school and then the Pregnancy Center.

IT Director Kevin Buxton recognized Tim Cerjak for his work in the High School Fab Lab. Mr. Cerjak keeps the Fab Lab running smoothly and recently installed a third 3D printer.

Middle School Principal Dr. Lisa Semrow extended a thank you to Mr. Dan Rueckert for coordinating the Washington DC trip and to Mr. Miller and Mrs. Kundert for chaperoning the trip to our nation’s capital.

Pupil Services Director Sarah Wadsworth recognized Aimee Fish, Angie Kirch, Delaney Teasdale, Brooke Lederman, Cristi Gretebeck, and DeAnne Larson for their help with the District’s DPI Procedural Compliance Self-Assessment.

Elementary School Principal Dave Novy recognized Tiffany Shelton for her work with the Elementary School’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Team.

The ICU Team is a group of teachers who get together monthly to organize activities to help bring our staff together. These things include pot lucks, contests, different pride days, and morning activities to make the Elementary School more fun for everyone.

High School Principal Jim Matthys recognized Stephanie Hurt for her work with the school-wide SLO data. He also recognized and congratulated Jason Riesterer and James Mauk for the wonderful fall concerts that were a huge success.

Superintendent Lenny Lueck recognized Cathy Pfeuti and Tonya Buttke for all of the extra work involved with the annual meeting held last month. He also thanked Lisa Licht for all of her extra work regarding the Kobussen bus contract. Finally, he recognized DeAnne Larson in honor of National School Psychologists week. DeAnne is a tremendous asset to the District and provides support and leadership in all three buildings.

Building and Grounds Director Brian Kammerer gave a big thank you to Glen Watrud, Shirley Zuhlke, Jim Huffman, and Jim Andrews for covering extra shifts while other staff members have been gone.

DISCUSSION OF PROVIDING FOOTWEAR TO FOODSERVICE WORKERS DISCUSSION/ACTION ITEM Superintendent Lueck presented information regarding footwear for employees that work in slippery conditions. The Food Service Department

has asked about the possibility of a stipend for required footwear to ensure that staff are wearing the proper type of shoes.

The Board declined to take action at this time and requested additional information from Superintendent Lueck regarding potential footwear costs for all foodservice, custodians, and maintenance personnel.

Last Thursday, the Brodhead boys found themselves set up for a key, early season conference matchup with the Clinton Cougars. Coming into the game with a 1-2 record, the Cards looked to bounce back to five hundred as they tried to keep a zero in Clinton’s win column.

The Cardinals did more than just that as they used this game to make a statement. First year head coach Tommy Meier and his squad put their foot on the pedal and did not let up as they ran away with this one right from the opening tip all the way up to the final buzzer.

Clinton had no answer for the Cardinal’s leading scorers. Owen Leifker showed his hot hand from range once again as he shot three of four from three point land and led the team with fifteen total points.

The duo of Conner Green and Cade Walker combined for another twenty-six points. Green was impressive from the free throw line as he hit seven of nine. Cody Malcook hit seven free throws of his own on his way to a nine point night.

Although the offense was on point, the Brodhead defense was just as impressive as they locked down the Cougars and held them to just thirty-nine points in the game.

Coach Meier said earlier last week, “A strength of ours is we are pretty athletic with some good outside shooters.” That has certainly proved true so far, as the Cardinals hit six three pointers in the game against Clinton. Leifker is leading the team from deep with an incredible, seventy-five percent shooting percentage from behind the arc.

Meier said, “a weakness for us

is going to be inexperienced, size, and not being physical enough.”

Although experience will come with size, the Cardinals have found a way to combat their lack of size with their athleticism and deep shooting thus far and should continue to do so. Meier and the Cardinals now sit at 2-2 on their young season.

The following night, the Lady Cards hosted the Evansville Blue Devils in what was expected to be an early season matchup that could have an important impact on the final standings near the end of the season. The Blue Devils came in on top of the Rock Valley Conference with an undefeated record in conference play. The Lady Cards sat just behind them in second place at 3-1, with a 5-1 overall record.

Evansville came in on a mission, however, and they quickly developed a lead that would remain throughout the game. Evansville jumped out to an early 15-5 lead and forced Brian Kammerer to take two early timeouts. Evansville forced a lot of tough shots for the Cardinals as they held Brodhead to just nine first half points.

The Cardinal offense was improved in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to climb their way back into things. They were able to cut the Blue Devil lead to eighteen points, which was the closest they would get as Evansville ran away with a 57-31 lead. This type of game can be expected when you have as much youth on your team as the Brodhead Cardinals do. However, they are still 5-2 on the year and have plenty of time to bounce back and continue to develop their skills on the varsity level.

Turkey Trot

200 brave souls arrived Thanksgiving morning for the third annual Turkey Trot. The 5K run, kids run and two mile family walk race started and ended at the Green County fairgrounds. The event was hosted by the Green County chapter of UW alumni. All proceeds provide scholarships to Green County High school graduates.

Obituary

BARBARA J. KOHL Barbara J. Kohl, 81, of Brodhead passed away Saturday, Dec. 14, 2019 in her home. Born Aug. 11, 1938, in Lafayette County, the daughter of Thomas and Kathryn (Tonkin) Burns. Barb married Forest (Till) Kohl on Sept. 7, 1973; he preceded her in death on Aug. 5, 1998. Barb graduated from Blanchardville, WI. She worked as a nurse’s aide at Monroe Manor Nursing Home

for many years as well as at Flynn’s Bar and Restaurant in Brodhead.

She was most recently working as a homecare provider caring for her ladies. Barb was a Wisconsin Badger and Green Bay Packer fan and would never shy away from making a friendly wager on football pools. She was social, outgoing, and enjoyed playing euchre and in card clubs. Barb loved her family and cherished her grandchildren.

Survived by her children, Rebecca (John) Huffman and Robert (Joy) Burns; grandchildren, Timothy Huffman, Jennifer Guilbault, Taurie Burns and Blake Burns; greatgrandchild, Makayla; sister, Theresa Garrison and step-children, Curt, Barb, Tari, and many other family

members and friends. Barb is also preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister, Mary Torkelson and step-children, Carol, Steve, Sherry, and Diane.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2019 at D. L. Newcomer Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday and will continue on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.

Burial in Greenwood Cemetery.
