Albany inducts three into sports Hall of Fame By Beth Blakemore CORRESPONDENT

Three inductees were honored at the Albany Comet Athletic Hall of Fame Night between the girls and boys varsity basketball games last Saturday. Honored were athletes Isaiah Shell and Andrea Statz, along with athlete and Comet booster Jeff Mauerman. Isaiah Shell was a three-sport athlete from 2010-14. He earned a total of 11 varsity letters. He played football in the fall as a wide receiver and an all-state defensive back. In basketball he was a four-year letter winner. In track and field he did the long jump, triple jump and the sprints.

Andrea Statz was a two-sport athlete. She was 2nd team all conference in volleyball, and a four time letter winner in track and field where she did the hurdles, long jump and relays. She had the best time in the state in the 300-meter hurdles. Living in the country, she often biked the 10-mile commute to school. Jeff Mauerman was a 1978 graduate from Albany High School where he was a star athlete. In 1980 he started coaching Albany Youth Little League Baseball and Basketball. He has also been the Albany junior varsity basketball coach. The inductions were followed by “Hoops for Harlow,” a celebration of a local 4-year old-girl battling cancer.
