Brodhead Fire & Ice Festival attractions On The Square Brodhead’s Fire & Ice Festival is coming up Dec. 6 and 7, 2019. Fire pits will be burning for roasting hot dogs, marshmallows, and making s’mores.

Hot chocolate and chili will be for sale as well. Zoli Akacsos, from Monroe, will be sculpturing blocks of ice in to pieces of winterland art from 3-8 p.m.

Decorated Pet Contest Fire & Ice Festival is seeking pet entries for the Lighted Parade. The pets are to be dressed in Christmas costume. The pets will be judged in front of City Hall at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6. Prizes will be awarded which will include prizes from 33 Seeds in Orfordville and Brodhead Chamber: 1st $15, 2nd $10, and 3rd place $5.

The pets and owners are to check in at 6:45 p.m. at 10th St. and E. 3rd Ave. and will be directed which parade spot to go to. Please keep your pets contained until parade time. All pets must be leashed with a proper fitting collar and kept away from other pets and children.

Photos with Santa Remember those special Christmases of times past when the kids would visit Santa and get their photo taken. That opportunity comes back this Christmas season.

DNR Awards $174,000 in Brownfields Grants to three communities in South-Central Wisconsin $336,000 to nine communities in the state for brownfield assessments.

In southcentral Wisconsin, the WAM awards include: Stoughton - The municipal garage in Stoughton near the Yahara River was used for industrial and commercial purposes since the late 1800s, including a flour mill, a coal gasification plant, a hydroelectric plant, feed mill and a variety of automobile-related businesses. The city has plans to market and redevelop this prime riverfront property.

Janesville - Several acres along the Rock River between the Hedberg Public Library and the Court Street bridge are positioned for redevelopment. The properties once housed a jail, a warehouse, coal storage buildings, automobile repair shops and more. Local officials suspect contamination may be present since previous businesses located on the properties used petroleum products. As the city continues to capitalize on its riverfront property, this area is prime for redevelopment.

Optimist mitten tree People who want to play Santa Claus may pick up a mitten at the Bank of Brodhead, Sugar River Bank or the Brodhead Public Library.

The mitten will indicate the child’s age, sex, clothing size and the child’s favorite toy or game. Both the recipient and the donor will remain anonymous. After purchasing the gifts from the child’s list, the gifts should be wrapped with the mitten attached and returned to one of the banks or the library by Dec 9.

The parent or legal guardian must pick up the gifts on Sat. Dec 14 between 9 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Bank of Brodhead Community Room. If the parent is unavailable at this time, they may have someone else pick up the gifts with a signed note from the parent.

Applications can be submitted for WAM awards at any time. The DNR uses WAM funding to assess brownfields throughout the state, concentrating on industrial sites and closed, or closing, manufacturing plants.

WAM awards are also made for sites that may not have had a history of manufacturing but are in rural areas, racially diverse communities or economically disadvantaged areas.

Brodhead FFA members attend 212/360º Conference Six members of the Brodhead FFA Chapter attended the National FFA Organization’s 212 & 360º Conference at the Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin Nov. 15-16, 2019. Approximately 1,000 FFA members and advisors from around the state of Wisconsin participated in this national personal development conference held bi-annually in Wisconsin. This conference is an activity of the National FFA Organization made possible by title sponsor Syngenta.

The 212º Conference is a two-

day personal development seminar designed for high school freshmen and sophomores involved in the FFA organization. 212° - the temperature at which water boils - will focus on taking students to the boiling point of leadership. At 211° water is extremely hot, but just one more degree gets us to the next level. These conferences focus on student development.

Students will be challenged to push the limits. Themes for this conference included: Virtues and Growth.

Monroe City Band schedules holiday concert The Monroe City Band concludes its 2019 season with a traditional holiday concert on Sunday, Dec. 1 at the Monroe United Methodist Church at 3 p.m. The band will perform a collection of traditional and contemporary holiday music, classic band literature, and a sing-a-long. The concert is free to attend and there will be a Green County Food Pantry collection to help those in need during this holiday season. It really helps the students focus on who they are and what they can become as well as meet FFA members from all across the state of Wisconsin.”

Conference staff members are college students who are former state or national FFA officers. Many staff members have also worked as counselors for the Washington Leadership Conference, FFA’s national leadership seminar held in Washington, D.C. each summer.

Brownfields cleanup projects in three South-Central Wisconsin communities are gaining momentum with the aid of several awards recently issued by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

The assistance comes from DNR’s Wisconsin Assessment Monies (WAM) program, which provides contractor services worth up to $35,000 per site. The work helps city officials and others assess possible environmental contamination at sites where cleanup and redevelopment may take place or is being planned.

“The DNR is proud to partner with these communities as local leaders seek to improve those buildings and properties that have seen better days,” said DNR Remediation and Redevelopment Program Director Christine Haag. “These small awards can sometimes provide the nudge needed to move forward a pending deal or planned improvements; we are honored to be a part of a local success.”

Village of Orfordville public works committee meeting summary CALL TO ORDER Chairman Terry Gerber called the meeting to order Thursday, Nov. 14, 2019 at 7 p.m.

Present were Chairman Gerber, Beth Schmidt, Nikki Tuffree. Also present were Public Works Director Nick Todd and Clerk Sherri Waege. Jason Knox and Gary Phillips joined the meeting after the meeting started.

MINUTE APPROVAL Motion by Tuffree, seconded by Schmidt to approve the Oct. 10, 2019 minutes. Motion carried.

DAY TO DAY OPERATIONS OF THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT DPW Director Todd explained the following: · The first snowfall went well with having new employees. The support that holds the belly blade on the big plow broke. DPW Director Todd explained that due to the budget this year, he may wait until 2020 to fix it. · Maintenance has been done on the

salters due to lack of maintenance previously. The salters had to be chiseled to be cleaned and had problems with the bearings. They are now in operating order. · The snow blower at the Village Hall would not start. A carburetor and spark plugs were replaced. · The 2020 Ford Truck needs new tires. · Leaf pick up will resume when the snow melts. · Applications for Dave Fullers job are due Nov. 15. There approximately 10 applicants. · There is a punch list of items that needs to be done in the spring for the wastewater treatment plant upgrades. · DPW Director Todd is working on a septage hauling ordinance for the sewer utility. · The fence at the lift station on Colby Drive is being repaired. · There is sludge hauling to be done

yet. · The five year wet test for the sewer effluent did not pass. Dave Fuller is dealing with the DNR on whether a second test is required. · Town and Country Engineering is doing plan reviews on Well 2 and Well 3. · The DNR did the annual water survey. There are six things that were noted and are being addressed. · The roof at the Village Hall will be replaced next week. · The irrigation system at the Village Hall has been winterized. · DPW Director Todd would like to start setting money aside for a new truck for the water utility. The truck is getting worn out. He would like to purchase a larger truck so a plow can be mounted. · DPW Director Todd will order a new door for Well 2. · DPW Director Todd is looking at

The cost will be between $10,000 and $12,000. · Chief Raupp attended the WIBR training in Kenosha. · Chief Raupp went to Edgerton for assistance with the computer system. October is validated and there are problems reporting information to the state. · Chief Raupp and Officer Burdick attended State Crime Lab training in

Village of Orfordville planning commission meeting CALL TO ORDER Chairman Gary Phillips called the meeting to order Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2019 at 7 p.m.

Present were Mike Eggleston, David Olsen, Beth Schmidt, Terry Morris, and Jason Knox. Also present were Phil Lund, Paul Hickman, and Clerk Sherri Waege. Absent was Steve Ryan.

DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE ACTION ON POTENTIAL BUSINESS IN THE BUSINESS PARK Phil Lund was present to explain that he was interested in a lot in the Business Park. Lund owns a roll off dumpster business and is looking to build a facility with an office and a place to store the dumpsters. Lund explained that the approximately 50 by 80 building would house an office and a shop. The roll off dumpsters would be stored outside.

Hickman explained that he provided a copy of the Restrictive Covenants for the Business Park and that Lund is aware of the outside storage restriction.

Morris explained that Mike Eggleston was given permission to have a screened fence for outside storage.

Lund explained that the facility would not be a transfer station for garbage.

Clerk Waege will provide a list of requirements to Lund so the project can move forward. No action was taken.

CARRYOVER OF VACATION DAYS Chief Raupp explained that he has vacation time to use before the end of the year. He will be using some in December and would like to carry over five days into January. The committee was fine with carrying over the five days.

Orfordville celebrates Shop Small Saturday ‘Mayberry’ style The business community & organizations within the Orfordville, WI community are celebrating Shop Small Saturday on Nov. 30, with a ‘Mayberry’ theme from The Andy Griffith Show.

Many businesses and organizations within the community are offering Shop Small Saturday specials & some are offering tastes of life in ‘Mayberry’. There will be special appearances by ‘Andy,’ ‘Otis’, “Aunt Bea” and other characters from The Andy Griffith Show portrayed by members of the local community. The downtown will have Christmas Music broadcasted.

Visiting shoppers will be invited to take pictures with ‘Andy’ and other characters, enjoy special treats at the local shops, participate in the Community Giveaway Raffle, and more.

Each store will have community passport that will feature the different

shops participating in the event, and what special they are offering. Shoppers will need to get a stamp, sticker, or initials from at least 8 participating stores they visit and may then use their maps to enter the Community Giveaway Raffle.

2020 WATER & SEWER BUDGET Clerk Waege explained that her and DPW Director Todd worked and finalized the Water and Sewer Budgets for 2020.

SEWER TELEVISING CONTRACT DPW Director Todd explained that he is working with a firm from Green Bay for a price for televising the sewer lines. DPW Director Todd explained that the infiltration problem is huge and we are paying to treat water that should not be going through the sewer system. Discussion held on sump pumps being drained into the sanitary sewer instead

of outside. Discussion held on imposing a larger fine for those that violate the sump pump ordinance to cut down on having to treat unnecessary water.

DPW Director Todd explained that he has $42,000 in the budget for manhole lining to help solve some of the infiltration problem.

SNOW PLOW BELLY BLADE DPW Director Todd explained that the support pole snapped and needs to be replaced. It appears that it has been previously repaired. DPR Director Todd explained that he may wait until 2020 budget.

SENSUS WATER METER READING SYSTEM DPW Director Todd explained that he is looking at two options for reading through Core & Main. Motion by Tuffree, seconded by Schmidt to authorize DPW Director Todd to get more information on both options so the project can be moved forward. Motion carried.

Frozen T-shirt Contestants The Fire & Ice Festival is gearing up for the 6th annual Frozen T-shirt Contest. Last year the contest was very popular and lots of fun. The concept is to remove a frozen t-shirt from a zip lock bag and race to see who the first is to thaw the t-shirt and to put it on as if wearing a t-shirt. We are seeking contestants, ages 16 and over to compete for prizes: first place $100, second place $50, and third place $25. There is a $15 entry fee.

White Gift 50/50 Raffle This is the season for giving and the Fire and Ice Festival committee will be selling 50/50 raffle tickets on Friday, Dec. 6 to benefit Brodhead’s White Gift.

MATH DEPARTMENT This week the Algebra I students are learning about lines and how to graph them. Geometry is focusing on different kinds of prisms. Engineering is continuing to program with PLC’s.

Pre-calculus is beginning to work with rational functions. Algebra II has jumped into the world of imaginary numbers. Finally, calculus is learning about the second derivative and how to use derivatives to graph any given function by hand.

PBIS The Nov. PBIS incentive will be held on Monday, Dec. 2. The character awards will start at 1:45 p.m., and the incentive will go from 2 to 3 p.m.

This month for the incentive, students will be put into groups for a maker space challenge. The challenge will be for each group to make a Christmas tree using different size straws and tape. Then they will test the trees to see which tree can hold the heaviest star on the top.

TOY DRIVE The Juda School District is participating in the Monroe Woman’s Club Annual Toy Drive. We are collecting toys for children ages 0 to 12.

All unwrapped toys to be donated can be brought to the main office now through Monday, Dec. 16.

SENIOR SEMINAR This week the Senior Seminar class finished their three-day project simulating buying furniture for an apartment, all of which had to be brand new and nothing could be borrowed from parents due to the parameters of the project. The total simulated cost averaged to be ~$2700. The students in the class also participated in a simulated job interview at school during normal hours.

ACT PREP CLASS An ACT preparatory class open to all Juda High School Students will be held at Evansville High School to prepare for the March ACT StateMandated Test. There are a total of six classes held January through February from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturdays.

FFA Fruit will be delivered on Dec. 12.

ENGLISH In English I, the freshmen are working on using commas appropriately with nonessential expressions.

In English II, the sophomores are working on verbals. They finished up participals and are starting gerunds.

In English III, the juniors are just finishing up their Crucible unit. English Honors finished reading the Canterbury Tales.

STEAM The high school students this week continue to work on their King of the Hill project. They have figured out the measurements of their boards for the carpentry class to cut for them.

SNOWMOBILE SAFETY CLASSES A Wisconsin DNR Snowmobile Safety Education Class will be coming to Juda on Dec. 3 and 7. This will be taught by a certified instructor. On Dec. 3, the class will be from 7 to 9 p.m., and on Dec. 7 the class will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. These classes will be at the Juda Community Center. THE PAW A member of The Paw will now be opening the store to middle schoolers during their lunch period on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

BOYS BASKETBALL The Boys Basketball season kicked off last Friday with a scrimmage against Shullsburg. The Panthers also had a game yesterday against Abundant Life. The results from this game will be available in next week’s is-

sue. The boys’ next game will be on Saturday, Dec. 7, at Lena-Winslow at 1:30 p.m. against Orangeville. Note that this game is Varsity only. Then, the Panthers will kick off conference play by taking on Barneveld at home on Tuesday, Dec. 10. JV will start at 6 p.m. and Varsity will start at 7 p.m.

ART DEPARTMENT This week in the Art Department the kindergarten is still working on their color unit. The rest of the elementary is working on their Christmas projects. The sixth grade is continuing work on their China unit. The middle school rotation class is continuing their tiny art show projects.

High school art classes are starting their paint unit and learning how to use all the different types of paint.

TEACHER OF THE WEEK This week’s teacher of the week is Kurtis Mansfield. He teaches middle school and high school gym classes, middle school and high school health, and this is also his first year teaching high school Human Anatomy and Physiology. He has been teaching for seven years, all at Juda. He graduated from UW-Whitewater in 2013 with his bachelor of science degree.

His favorite class outside of PE was Biology and Human Anatomy. His science teacher was Ms. Sam. He says that she always had a way of making each class relevant but also exciting and engaging. He thought about becoming a botanist after going through the genetics unit in biology. Working with genetics was something that fascinated him. Lastly, his favorite animal is a goat.

ACCOUNTING EXPLORATION DAY On Friday, Nov. 22, the accounting class took a field trip to UW-Whitewater for an Accounting Exploration Day. On this trip, they were split into groups with other schools to work together to do various accounting activities. After the activities were over, they were taken to Buffalo Wild Wings for lunch. Those students attending were Payton Johnson, Alex Rathsack, Miah Roth, Nicky Pina, Roberto Olmedo, Toby Hosch, and Gavin Kammerer.

Protect family and friends this holiday season Health officials encourage you to add a flu vaccine to your holiday checklist to help protect your guests this Christmas.

“Many of those close to us need extra protection from the flu, especially our elderly family members and friends, babies, and those with special health conditions,” said Jeanne Ayers, State Health Officer. “Getting your flu vaccine is a very effective and thoughtful way to protect yourself and your

guests this holiday season.”

In Wisconsin, there have already been six deaths in September due to flu-related complications. Last year, such complications resulted in 3,500 people being hospitalized and over 600 admitted to the intensive care unit.

Nationally, some 17 million workdays are missed due to flu.

“Because it takes two weeks for the vaccine to take effect, getting one now will ensure protection by the time family and friends gather for the Christmas holiday, and that protection will continue throughout the holiday season and beyond,” Ayers stated.

Flu vaccine is plentiful among health

care providers and pharmacies. The flu shot is safe and effective for people age six months and older. You can find a location near you where the vaccine is available or attend a flu shot clinic provided by employers, faith-based organizations, and community groups.

These steps can also help you protect yourself, family members, and friends: Wash your hands often with soap and water, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

Fall is here! The trees are turning colors. When looking at the colorful trees, we should be considering next year’s colors too. The Green County Land & Water Conservation Department is offering nine varieties of trees and two varieties of shrubs for landowners interested in planting next spring. The tree varieties are: Bur Oak, Red Oak, White Oak, Swamp White Oak, Sugar Maple, Shagbark Hickory, American Plum, White Pine, and Norway Spruce.

Shrubs available are: Serviceberry and Black Currant. The trees and shrubs are bare root, and range in height between 1’-4’ depending on species. The cost is $20 for a bundle of 10 and must be ordered in increments of 10.

Most of the trees and shrubs are native to the area except the Norway Spruce. The species offered cover a broad range of soil types and moistures, from dry to very wet. This is the first

year Black Currant has been offered through the county.

5’ tree tubes, Mycorrhizal root dip and nutrient packs are also available to order. Tree spuds can be “rented” for just a deposit. The two tree planters can be rented for $20/1000 trees planted with a minimum charge of $40.

Christmas Memories musical to be presented For the past 25 years the combined choirs of Juda Zion and Oakley Union United Methodist Churches have presented musicals during the Christmas season. The tradition will continue this year with a program of “Christmas Memories” on Sunday, Dec. 1 and on Sunday, Dec. 8. Both performances will be at 1:30 p.m. in the sanctuary of Zion Church, located at N2350 Church St., Juda.

Under the direction of Shelly Jordan the musical will take us back in time to Christmases Past and includes songs and narrations that tell again of the birth of Christ. As with all performances, the program will conclude with a candle light ceremony as the audience sings “Silent Night”, accompanied by Kalvin Kaderly on the guitar.

Brodhead Fire & Ice Festival: Dec. 6-7 Lighted Parade The Festival is gearing up for the 2019 Fire & Ice Festival.

We are seeking entries for the Lighted Parade being held Friday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m.

Milk trucks, semis, business entries, farm tractors, children and adult organizations, pets decorated in Christmas attire are some of the ideas. Entries should have a Christmas theme. Contact the Brodhead Fire & Ice Festival by email at BrodheadFireAndIce@gmail.com and put Parade in the subject line. Please include your business/organization name, description of your entry, name, and contact phone number and email your spot number the week of Dec. 6.

The lineup will take place at E. 2nd Ave. and 10th St. You can find the registration forms on our Brodhead Fire & Ice Festival Facebook page and send it in by mail as well.

Decorated Pet Contest The Festival is seeking pet entries for the Lighted Parade.

The pets are to be dressed in Christmas costume. The pets will be judged in front of City Hall at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6. Prizes will be awarded which will include prizes from 33 Seeds in Orfordville and Brodhead Chamber: first $15, second $10, and third place $5.

The pets and owners are to check in at 6:45 p.m. at 10th St.

and E. 3rd Ave. and will be directed which parade spot to go to. Please keep your pets contained until parade time. All pets must be leashed with a proper fitting collar and kept away from other pets and children.

Sixth Annual Arts and Crafts Fair Chamber of Commerce members have announced that their Fire & Ice Festival Committee is sponsoring the 6th Annual Arts and Crafts Fair during the festival on Friday, Dec. 6, and Saturday, Dec. 7. The fair will run from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, and again Saturday, Dec. 7, from 8 a.m. to noon.

The Arts and Crafts Fair will be held in the Bank of Brodhead Courtesy Room. Fire & Ice Festival Committee members have approximately 10 booths available for crafters.

Exhibitors are to bring their own display equipment and electrical cords, if they need electricity.

Frozen T-Shirt Contest The Festival is gearing up for the sixth annual Frozen Tshirt Contest. Last year the contest was very popular and lots of fun. The concept is to remove a frozen t-shirt from a zip lock bag and race to see who the first is to thaw the t-shirt and to put it on as if wearing a t-shirt. We are seeking contestants, ages 16 and over to compete for prizes: first place $100, second place $50, and third place $25. There is a $15 entry fee.

Christmas Memorial Tree Once again this year, Brodhead offers the opportunity for people to remember their loved ones on the Memorial Christmas Tree on display at City Hall. Your loved one’s photo and name will be displayed on the Memorial Christmas Tree.

North Pole Mailbox It’s the time of year when children start thinking about that special gift they would like for Christmas. A special North Pole mailbox will be delivered to the Brodhead Post Office on Friday, Nov. 25. Monroe Clinic welcomes UW-Madison Chancellor and Wisconsin Legislators On Wednesday, Nov. 21, Monroe Clinic welcomed UW-Madison Chancellor Rebecca Blank, Wisconsin State Senator Howard Marklein, Wisconsin State Representative Todd Novak, and members of the UW School of Nursing staff for a visit. The trip to Monroe Clinic’s main campus was an opportunity to celebrate Monroe Clinic’s collaboration with UW-Madison on the Rural Placement Program for nurse practitioner and doctor of nursing practice students.

Monroe Clinic and UW-Madison began this partnership with the goal of introducing nursing students into rural clinical rotations. When students express an interest in rural medicine, they are matched with a Monroe Clinic provider for a semester-long

field placement. In these placements, students get to experience types of medicine that may not be seen in an urban hospital.

In return, Monroe Clinic has seen a steady growth in recruitment of students joining the medical staff. A total of 17 former students have been hired to fill both physician and advanced practice provider (APP) vacancies in the last 3 years. This includes four physician assistants, eight physicians, and five nurse practitioners. The number of former Rural Placement Program students working at Monroe Clinic accounts for 25% of Monroe Clinic’s total APP workforce.

Wisconsin Dental Association recognizes area dentist

Dr. Julio Rodriguez, a general dentist in Brodhead, is the recipient of the 2019 Wisconsin Dental Association Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of the time, energy and expertise he has contributed to organized dentistry throughout his career. Dr. Rodriguez was one of 14 dentists and oral health advocates honored at the WDA’s annual Pyramid of Pride Awards held Nov. 8 at The Lismore Hotel in Eau Claire.

Dr. Rodriguez has been a WDA member for more than 37 years, while showing an unwavering commitment to the profession, the underserved population and his community. He first joined WDA leadership in 2005, and eventually served as WDA president from 2013-2014, helping accomplish many legislative successes during this time. Additionally, he has represented the WDA in the American Dental Association’s House of Delegates since 2005.

Dr. Rodriguez has been previously recognized for his contributions to the dental profession as the International College of Dentists-USA Distinguished Deputy of the Year in 2013. He received the WDA Pyramid of Pride Community Outreach Award in 2015 and has earned the Pierre Fauchard Academy Distinguished Dentist Citation.

He is a graduate from the National University of San Marcos in Lima, Peru, and the WDA’s first Latino president. Dr. Rodriguez served as a dental officer in the Peruvian Air Force before immigrating to the United States and opening a practice in Wisconsin.

Let’s talk germs Have you ever thought about all the things your cell phone touches each day? If you are like most people, your phone has come in contact with fingers and faces. It sits on countertops, dining room tables, or desks. It moves from the bedroom, to the bathroom, to the kitchen, to the car, to work or school, and the gym. Your cell phone is collecting a lot of germs along the way. A cell phone can carry 25,000 bacteria per square inch. That is more germs than a public toilet, the bottom of your sneakers, or a doorknob! And where phones are kept doesn’t help. Sticking your phone in a pocket or purse helps bacteria multiple due to the heat from the battery. Cell phones can be dirty.

To help reduce germs, you can do two things: • Clean your cell phone with an alcohol-free antiseptic wipe at least once a week.

• Wash your hands. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), hand washing is one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs.

Here are five steps to proper hand washing: 1) Wet your hands with clean running water and apply soap.

2) Lather your hands by rubbing them together with soap.

3) Scrub all surfaces of your hands for at least 20 seconds.

4) Rinse your hands under clean running water.

5) Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.

If soap and water are not available, you can use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
