Some members wore green or 4-H t-shirts on 4-H shirt day. Leaders went to a training at the Justice Center.

Besides these activities, members were busy doing other things in the past month.

Chance Ace does chores like keep his room clean, sweeps, and helps with animals. He stayed at a friend’s house a few times. They played and this helped keep their friendship alive. He got a flu shot and played at the park.

Roxane Ace helps with dishes and the animals and uses the vacuum.

She stayed at a friend’s. They are becoming better friends. She spends time with her “Big Sister.” They do many different things together. Roxy has been going to church.

She went on a picnic with friends.

They made good food played, and had fun. She got her flu shot. She went to the Argyle gun club and said thanked them for helping to pay for her to go to camp last summer. She talked about what she did at camp.

Addyson Brauer enjoyed celebrating her birthday at school and home. She was star of the week at school. She got to wear a 4-H shirt on 4-H shirt day. She exhibited projects during 4-H Week and helped take the display down.

Jaydon Brauer celebrates his birthday during the summer but he got a special birthday supper at home with his family. He went to one of his sister’s volleyball games.

Jaydon helped put up the window display, exhibited projects, and helped take it down. He wore a 4-H shirt and spent time with his “Big Sister.”

Maylee Brauer had musical and volleyball practices. She really enjoyed her volleyball games and looks forward to doing her part in the “Wizard of Oz.” She had exhibits in the window display and helped take it down at the end of the week.

Royce Brauer finished out the cross country season. He has begun his second year of confirmation.

Some of his projects were exhibited during 4-H Week. Royce went on a field trip to three different area manufacturing businesses and learned a lot. He is looking forward to performing in the “Wizard of Oz” musical.

Shannon Day belongs to Girl Scouts. She has fun with their activities.

She does things with her “Big Sister.” They have fun. She walks the dog and spends time with him so they get used to each other. She is planning to take the dog project in 4-H. She helps mom at home.

Jaena LeGault has been handling a different job on a farm. She helps out a lot at home in the house and outdoors.

Justin Moore helps with household chores and helps take care of the animals. He visits with his dad every other weekend and went to the homecoming dance. He went to the Junior Leaders meeting where he learned about coins. Justin helped his grandma move to a new place and got his flu shot.

Lillyanna Schmid helps at home and baby sits her siblings when her mom is busy. She belongs to Girl Scouts and does their activities.

The Comets boys basketball team will have to find new scoring threats in 2017-18 as Albany lost their top two scorers from a year ago.

Albany went 10-13 last year and 4-8 in Six Rivers Eastern division play.

The Comets lost to Juda 68-47 in a

WIAA Division 5 regional quarterfinal matchup.

The two leading scorers that Albany must replace are Brock Gilkes and Connor Trow. Gilkes averaged 13 points an five rebounds per game.

Trow averaged 12 points and three rebounds per game. This dynamic duo knocked down a combined 64 threes

One strength for this year’s team will be their quickness. This year’s squad will not have a lot of height. As a result this undersized team will have to rely on their backcourt to generate scoring opportunities. Some other strengths for the 2017-18 squad will be defense and team chemistry.

One challenge that this team will face throughout the season is a lack of depth. Albany plans to use two freshmen off the bench. One freshman is Luke Johnson, who will look to provide energy off the bench. Another freshman that’ll look to make a contribution is Clay Hulbert. Hulbert’s shooting skills could be a huge asset for the Comets.

Albany enters 2017-18 with two goals. The first goal is to improve on last year’s performance. The second goal is to end the season towards the top of the conference.

Melinda McNett is one of five Campaign Committee team members working for my election to be mayor of Brodhead. I know her to be thoughtful, talented, insightful and very concerned about the welfare of the city she loves and has called home for over 60 years, Brodhead, Wisconsin. Ms. McNett is a Senior citizen and deals with slight mobility issues; going to any meeting for her is much more of a chore than for most. It can be safe to say it required an extra level of courage for her to show up and want to speak up. Ms. McNett is also human; she was intimidated by Mayor Pinnow’s bully pulpit tactics and decided not to speak. I was there; I saw and heard it as did twenty some other citizens….yes it did happen! A few on the committee gleefully observed the display.

I called out the mayor for “chastising” speakers who spoke out against the S/C committee’s recommendation and immediately there was heard an echo from the committee: “well you’re chastising us”. In that statement lays a symptom of our problem….public servants, which also includes committee members, ignoring concerned taxpayers. You see bully’s chastise, employers (taxpayers) critique.

Still doubtful? Taken from Ms. Sutherland’s own article: “The proposal is not to go back to the beginning and relook at every empty building available…..” I shake my head in disbelief!

Taiwan’s Foxconn, the world’s largest contract electronics manufacturer and a major Apple supplier, posted a 39 percent drop in third-quarter earnings.

Foxconn attributed the drop in earnings to delay with the introduction of Apple’s iPhone X. Foxconn, formally known as Hon Hai Precision Industry Co, said third-quarter earnings came in at T$21.03 billion ($698 million), compared with T$34.64 billion ($1.12 Billion) a year earlier, while revenue for the quarter was flat.

Next Generation teams up for community service project On Nov. 11, despite the cold temps outside, 21 adult volunteers and 24 club youth from the Next Generation 4-H Club of Juda came together to assisted a local organization with one of their annual events.

The Monroe Women’s Club each November holds their “Holiday Pots on the Square” where evergreens and dogwood branches decorate the many pots located around the square in Monroe.

For the past 3 years the Next Generation 4-H Club has helped with this event by delivering the greens to the pots and helping arrange them in a very festive fashion.

These greens will stay decorating the square until spring. This is only one of many community service projects the club does for local organizations in the area.

As part of 4-H, the club strive to promote generosity, empathy and concern for others as well as Community Service by the act of Volunteering.

If you are in need of help on any project please consider giving the Next Generation or any other of the 18 4-H clubs in Green County a call.

Juda School District Board Meeting Listed below is a summary of events from the Nov. 8 Juda School board meeting from Principal Traci Davis: • Mrs. Davis updated the board on the funds left from the referendum and discussed a list of some other potential items the school could do yet.

• Held discussion on the fire alarm system along with the new sound and lighting system.

• The board recognized Connor Mayberry, Nate Nicholson, Liana Daniels, Skylar Winthrow, Jocelyn Anderson, Charlotte Bender, Samantha Anderson, Bethany Woodworth, Lorelei Paggett and Gunnar Riebe for their volunteer hours.

• Mrs. Davis gave the board many general updates on the activities in the school, including the successful performances of “The Wizard of Oz”, and the math team.

• Dennis Pfingsten reminded the board of the WASB Convention in January in Milwaukee.

• Three board positions will be up for election in the spring. Eric Makos, Dennis Pfingsten and Joann Goecks. Joann Goecks is not seeking re-election. Residents of the Juda School District interested in running should contact the school office for more information and required paperwork.

• The next board meeting will be held Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2017.

JOSTENS All seniors’ graduation apparel and freshmen class ring order forms from Jostens are due before school on Monday, November 27. All students must have their order form here on this day and turn it in by 8 a.m.

SCHOOL BOARD ELECTION There is an open seat on the Juda School Board because Joann Goecks is not running for re-election. The deadline to sign up to run in the election is Tuesday, January 2.

CRAFT FAIR The Juda Booster Club will be hosting their craft fair on Saturday, December 9. The craft fair takes place throughout the school and includes many local community members displaying their works for everyone to see and purchase.

BOOSTER CLUB CLOTHING ORDER Juda apparel is now available through the Juda Booster Club.

There are t-shirts, sweatshirts, and other items available for purchase.

Orders are due November 27. Order forms and clothing samples can be found in the office.

Juda boys basketball preview

The Juda boys basketball team will enter a new era in 2017-18 as Kurtis Mansfield will lead the Panthers program.

Juda is coming off a successful season going 15-9 last year and 6-6 in Six Rivers eastern division play. Juda dropped a thrilling 54-51 decision to Pecatonica in a WIAA Division 5 regional semifinal contest.

The Panthers return just 36 percent of their offense from a year ago. Matt Schmitt poured in 15 points, 13 rebounds and two assists per game. Some other key losses that Juda must replace are Joe Rackow and Skyler Stuckey. Rackow averaged nine points and Stuckey contributed eight points last year.

Not all the Panthers’ scoring is gone, as the Panthers top scorer from a year ago, senior guard Keagen Haffele is back. Haffele racked up 16 points, four

rebounds and four assists per game n 2016-17.

The Panthers offense will run through Haffele as he will be the Panthers go to player in 2017-18. Senior Luke Skoumal, senior Dakota Davis, senior Clayton Mahlkuch, senior Clayton Hale, senior Almanzo Friedly and junior Quinton Kammerer are key returning experienced players.

One underclassman that has stood out during the summer and early practices is sophomore Dominic Taylor. Taylor’s outside shooting and rebounding skills will help the Panthers compete in a tough Six Rivers eastern conference.

One strength of this year’s team will be chemistry, as the Panthers roster will consist of eight seniors. Every player understands the role they need to play for the Panthers to have a successful season. This year’s team also possesses a wealth of speed and quickness which they hope to take advantage of

by pushing the temp and getting out in transition.

Mansfield expects the Panthers to compete near the top of the conference and with upsets of favorites(Black Hawk and Barneveld) the Panthers may contend for a championship.

One area that the Panthers must improve is their defense. Mansfield believes it will be key that the Panthers apply early pressure to create turnovers.

Juda will rely on Dakota Davis, Jace Morris and Haffele to generate that pressure. Rebounding could be another area of concern for the Panthers. With Juda lacking in size, it will be important that the Panthers force quick shots to help offset their height height disadvantage.

Mansfield knows the Panthers will encounter scoring droughts in the halfcourt offense, as a vast majority of their offense from a year ago is gone. Juda plans to use a quick hitter offense and spread defenses out to attack the rim.

ELEMENTARY The annual 4K and 5K Thanksgiving play will be held on Tuesday, November 21, at 10:00 a.m. The elementary students have started practicing for their Christmas Program.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL On Friday, November 17, the JV and Varsity boys played a scrimmage at Shullsburg. The next games for the boys are November 27 versus Abundant Life and November 30 versus Durand. JV games start at 6 p.m., and Varsity starts after JV is finished.

SPANISH CLUB The Butter Braid fundraiser was given to each Spanish Club student at their last meeting. The fundraiser ends on Tuesday, November 28. This fundraiser will go towards “La Piedra,” which is a child care center that the Club visited on their trip to the Dominican Republic. The center was impacted by the hurricanes during the summer and is in need of supplies. Also, an urgent reminder to all Club members that $5 entrance fees and $13 shirt dues need to paid as

soon as possible.

FFA Fruit Sale The FFA Fall Fruit Sale is now coming to a close. All forms for the sale were due back to Mr. Johnson on Friday, November 17. As an FFA, we hope that everyone ordered all of the fruit that they wanted and if there is anyone who didn’t get the chance to order, we ask you to please call the school and place your order. The FFA Officers set a goal this summer for the Fall Fruit Sale, and that goal was to sell $18,000 worth of product! We hope to achieve that goal this year, and thank you to everyone who has ordered.

MATH DEPARTMENT The Pre-Calculus class is doing real-world learning on pandemics showing how they are similar to an exponential growth problem using the zombie apocalypse as an example.

MUSIC DEPARTMENT The Elementary Holiday Concert will be held on Tuesday, December 12, at 6:00 p.m. in the pit gym. The Middle School/High School Holiday Concert will be held Monday, December 18, at 7:00 p.m. in the pit gym. Reminder to all high school band students to schedule a lesson with Mrs. Fox in order to check off your winter concert music.

ART DEPARTMENT Last week the kindergarten class

created “popcorn” using yellow, orange, and white paint. The second graders started making their Oscar trophies using air dry clay, and the third graders finished up their movie star portraits. The fourth graders worked on their movie tickets, and the fifth graders made color posters using oil pastels or colored pencils.

The sixth graders began working with glue, and the eighth graders started working with oil pastels. The high schoolers had a work day and then critiqued each other’s work.

STUDENT COUNCIL Student Council will be selling candy canes this year for Christmas.

All profits will go to student council to fund the winter formal.

FFA The FFA Officer team had goals set for the chapter during their officer retreat in June. Their goal as an FFA Chapter is to achieve those goals throughout the year. Some of those goals include the following: Higher attendance of members and families at our FFA Banquet, more members participating in the Leadership Development Events also known as the Speaking Contests, to set up an FFA Service Day, get more members involved and do more activities, start a point system for members and recognize active members, plan more activities for Middle School Officers and members, more teams to com-

pete in CDE’s, and plan more activities with elementary students. As a chapter, they hope that they can accomplish these goals and make it a successful year.

ACT DATES Again this year all juniors will be taking the ACT at school. This year that important test will be given on February 27 and February 28. February 27 will be the ACT test with writing, and February 27 will be the WorkKeys test.

If students would like to retake the ACT, there are several important dates to remember: Registration for the February 10 ACT test is due by January 12. Registration for the April 14 test date is due by March 9. Registration for the June 9 test is due by May 4. Registration for the July 14 test is due by June 15. There are late registrations possible, but there is an additional fee to register past the original date.

LUNCH Monday, November 27, breakfast will be toast and sausage; lunch will be nachos, taco meat, chili, corn, and pears. Tuesday, November 28, breakfast will be breakfast bars; lunch will be soup day, grilled cheese, veggiesn-dip, and apple juice. COUNTY BOARD SUPERVISOR 24TH DISTRICT

The Green County Board passed the 2018 budget at the November County Board meeting. There was nothing surprising or out of the ordinary in the budget, nor in the discussions before voting.

The total budget for 2018 is $63,479,667 but with total revenues, surplus, and a sum from the undesignated general fund applied, the net tax levy is $15,789,498. This is an increase of $439,935 from the 2017 net tax levy.

The majority of the business at the meeting was focused on the budget and passing the budget. There will be a presentation on the status of the roads in Green County at the December County Board meeting; that will take place Tuesday, Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. at the Historic Courthouse in Monroe.

Considering the wheel tax information that was provided to the board last month, I foresee discussion in the future about the funding options we have for our roads in Green County.

As the cost of repairs and maintenance on the roads increases - which is painfully clear during budget time and the sources of funding are being reduced, we need to find ways to bridge the difference. As always, the public is welcome at the County Board meetings, and the upcoming road status presentation will be very informative. If you have thoughts about the roads, a wheel tax, or other, you are welcome to contact your County Board Supervisor.

All County Board seats are up for election/re-election this spring. If you are interested in running for a seat on the County Board, you can pick up papers at the County Clerk’s office beginning Friday, Dec. 1. You will need to get 25 nomination signatures and return the papers to the Clerk’s office by 5 p.m, on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2018.

I encourage everyone interested to run. If you have questions about the board, talk to any of the current Supervisors. I am sure they are all willing to talk and share their experiences with you.

Representing your neighbors and working to make Green County such a wonderful place is quite fulfilling.

The community of Orfordville is coming together to support the family of Melissa Whitten after she passed away from injuries sustained in a car accident on Highway 213 south of Orfordville last Thursday evening.

Melissa’s five-month-old daughter survived the crash. Melissa is survived by her husband. Donations can be dropped off at 100-Proof Design Co., at 202 W. Beloit St., in Orfordville.

Becky Strupp advises those that are donating to think ahead to what the child will need in six, eight to 10 months time, as she and her father navigate this tragedy.

ROMAN BAKER Roman F. Baker, 98, died Friday, November 17, 2017 at the Hospice Home of Hope in Fond du Lac. He was born December 16, 1918, in Stevens Point, WI, the son of August and Martha (Daczyk) Baker.

On June 23, 1945, he married Coyla M. Mead in Beloit, WI. After her passing in 1984, he spent winters in Texas, and became a Texas resident. He married Ann Radtke on June 30, 1989, living in Harlingen, then Donna, Texas, and residing during summer months in Fountain, MI. In the summer of 2016, he chose to give up driving and move back to Wisconsin where he resided with his daughter LuAnn in Fond du Lac. Following graduation from P.J. Jacobs High School, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) for 13 months. He then attended UW-Stevens Point for 2 years. After taking a semester off to work, he enrolled at UW-Whitewater graduating in 1942 with a Business Education degree.

He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard, serving for 3 ½ years during World War II. During his service he attended

Communications School at Harvard University, and achieved the rank of 2nd Lieutenant.

He obtained a Master’s degree in Business Education from the University of Iowa and taught Business Education 6 years in New Richmond, WI. After the passing of his fatherin-law in 1952, moved to the Mead family farm outside of Beloit where he farmed along with teaching Business Education in Durand, Illinois. In 1968, the family moved off the farm and resided in Brodhead. He continued teaching in Durand, IL for a total of 26 ½ years—8 of the years serving as half time principal and half time teacher— retiring in December 1978.

Throughout his life he excelled in sports, participating in boxing, hockey, baseball, football, golf, and bowling.

He also enjoyed watching sports, especially the Wisconsin Badgers, the St. Louis Cardinals, and the Green Bay Packers. He was an avid card player with Bridge being his favorite.

Roman is survived by his wife, Ann Radtke, Grand Rapids, MI; sons, Robert R. (Julie) Baker of Oakfield, WI, Stephen J. Baker of Brodhead, WI;

SID ZIMMERMAN Sid D. Zimmerman, age 58, of Richland Center, WI, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on November 17, 2017 at home. Sid was born May 8, 1959 in Monroe, WI to Merton and Donna (Malkow) Zimmerman. He grew up in Brodhead, graduating from Brodhead High School in 1977. He married Cindy Meier in 1979 and had 2 children, Jeanie and Eric. They later divorced. On October 18 2008, he married Kathleen Schleich Greco in Las Vegas, NV. Sid was a meat cutter and worked for Costco in Mt. Prospect, IL, Pick N Save in Monroe, and Piggly Wiggly in Janesville, and Edgerton. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, spending time outdoors and watching football. One of his dreams was to live in the country and that was fulfilled when he and Kathy bought their acreage in Richland Center and built their house.

Sid is survived by his wife, Kathy; a daughter, Jeanie (Jose) Ortiz of Janesville; a son, Eric Zimmerman of Watertown; 3 granddaughters, Serenity Zimmerman, Lydia and Nayeli Ortiz; a brother, Steve (Jodi) Zimmerman of Monroe; a sister, Sue Flora of Janesville; a nephew, Chad Zimmerman and nieces, Alysa Anderson and Abby Flora. Sid was preceded in death by his father, Merton in 2004, his mother, Donna in 2006 and a grandson, Angel Ortiz in 2012.

A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, November 21, 2017, at the D.L. Newcomer Funeral Home, Brodhead, WI. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. on Tuesday until time of services at the funeral home.
