RUTH H. LIGHTFOOT She is surRuth H. Lightfoot, age 97, of vived by her Brodhead, died Sunday, Nov. 8, children, Dan 2020, at her home. She was born Lightfoot of Nov. 7, 1923, in Viroqua, WisconMontessano, sin, the daughter of John and GerWashington, trude (Sonnenberg) Schmoll. Private graveside services were held at Greenwood Cemetery, Brodhead.

MARK D. NENNEMAN Mark Daniel Nenneman, 61, of Clinton, Wisconsin, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2020, at Beloit Memorial Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Sept. 3, 1959, in Monroe, Wisconsin, the son of Ronald and Janet (Gadow) Nenneman. Mark married Michelle Kalish on Nov. 15, 1980, in Clinton.

Mark was a happy go-lucky, funny, compassionate, supportive, free-spirited man and the ultimate foodie. He enjoyed the outdoors and was a fishing fanatic. Mark was a loyal friend who always went out of his way to

He was predeceased by his fatherin-law, Glenn Kalish, and his brotherin-law, Timothy Kalish.

A memorial visitation for Mark was held on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2020, at the Daley Murphy Wisch & Associates Funeral Home and Crematorium, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit.

OLGA HATTIE WOLFE Olga Hattie Wolfe, age 95, of Brodhead and formerly of Albany, passed away while at Woods Crossing Nursing Home in Brodhead.

Olga was born Oct. 26, 1925, in Marathon County, Wisconsin, the daughter of Gustav and Louise (Liebers) Beyer.

Olga married Sgt. Howard Wolfe on Aug. 1, 1947, in San Antonio, Texas.

She went with her husband from San Antonio to Fairbanks, Alaska; Rantoul, Illinois; Terceira Island, Azores, Portugal; and Victoria, Texas. They finally returned to Wisconsin in 1953 to begin farming. Olga and her husband farmed in the Albany, Orfordville and Brodhead areas.

As children, Olga and her sister, Annabelle, sang and yodeled together; Annabelle would play the guitar and Olga would harmonize. Olga and Annabelle sang for many occasions, including to entertain at the Marathon Fairgrounds and the WSAU radio station, where they were surprised with a 78 record of the songs they performed on air. Olga was 13 at the time. Besides singing and yodeling, which she continued during her time at Wood’s Crossing, she is remembered for the many poems she

wrote of childhood memories.

Olga is survived by her three children, Linda (Robert) Klingler, Patricia (Gerald) Eggen and Steve (Brenda) Wolfe; two siblings, Alfred (Nona) and Gerald (Carol) Beyer; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Olga was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Howard, in 2007; and three siblings, Herbert, Donald and Annabelle.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be directed to Heartland Hospice, 6000 E. State St., First Floor, Rockford, IL 61108.

Funeral services were held at the DL Newcomer Funeral Home in Brodhead on Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2020. A visitation was held on Nov. 16 and on Nov. 17 before the services.

Burial is at the Norwegian Lutheran Cemetery in Albany.

The 2021 budget for Green County was passed by the Green County Board at the board meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 10. The preliminary tax levy, and actual operating cost for Green County, is $21,347,374. The net tax levy of $17,888,877 with the 2019 sales tax revenue of $3,018,451 and $440,046 from the undesignated General Fund will allow us to reach the operating costs of the county.

The reduction of the General Fund will be offset by departments returning an estimated $1,099,342 at the end of fiscal 2020; the net effect will be an increase to the General Fund by $659,296.

The amount of the 2021 tax levy is equal to the amount allowed under the state’s levy limits. Based on increased property values and a net new construction increase of $484,500, the levy rate for 2021 will be $5.335 per thousand of equalized value, less than last year’s rate of $5.433.

Main Street Monroe lights up the holidays Holiday decorations are going up this week in the Main Street Monroe district, including garland, lights, wreaths and more.

“Main Street has been entrusted to handle this and it’s something we take seriously, enjoy and have a lot of pride in,” Jordan Nordby, Main Street Monroe executive director, said in a news release.

Some additional decorations purchased within the last year are part of a multiyear campaign effort set up in 2017 to address long-term sustainability of the project.

“There’s still a good amount of volunteer work every year, but prior to us starting this campaign, we had about eight to 10 volunteers donating nearly 100 hours to get the old decorations ready each season,” Nordby said. “We’ve been able to reduce that greatly while expanding the decorations through more of the district.”

Since the campaign started, excluding volunteer time, Main Street Monroe has invested more than $20,000. Most of the funding has come through grants, including those from Alliant Energy and The Monroe Fund of the Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin, which covered this year’s decorations.

“This is really a magical time of year, and this year, especially, it feels like we all need a bit more of it,” Nordby said. “Whether you’re

downtown to shop or to eat or just take a stroll, we really think everyone will enjoy the lights and the efforts behind it.

“They’re not what you see in every city.”

Students raise money for pregnancy center Students at St. Victor School in Monroe recently raised nearly $1,040 for the Care Net Pregnancy Center of Green County in honor of Respect Life Month.

Students each took a baby bottle home and asked family and friends to put their spare change in the bottle during the special month. Parent volunteer Deb Hillary helped to head up

the fundraising effort.

3. Downloading the AD-3117 application form from farmers.gov/cfap and manually completing the form to submit to the local USDA Service Center by mail, electronically, or by hand delivery to an office drop box. In some limited cases, the office may be open for in-person business by appointment.

County sets free COVID-19 screening Green County Public Health officials have announced that beginning Sept. 9, Green County will have three COVID-19 community testing sites.

Free COVID-19 testing will be available for anyone 5 years of age and older.

Individuals who need to be tested are asked to register online prior to getting tested. This is to ensure a smooth and efficient process for everyone, according to a health department news release.

Testing will be available while supplies last at the drive-thru sites, which are at the Monroe National Guard Armory, the former Brodhead Fitness Center and the Swiss Center of North America in New Glarus.

Anyone 5 to 17 years old must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian authorized to give consent for the COVID-19 test on their behalf.

People who can be tested at their doctor’s office are encouraged to do so, the release said.

Brodhead High School senior Kaitlyn Welsh is turning to the local community to help children and families in Haiti.

As her senior project, Welsh is organizing the Walk for Family on Saturday, Sept. 26. The two-mile walk will begin at 9 a.m. at the start of the Sugar River Trail in Brodhead.

Community members also may opt to participate by taking their own walking route and collecting donations for the cause, Welsh said in a news release.

The walk will raise money for One Gift, One Child, a ministry of former Brodhead residents Natalie and Pierre Charlotin. Natalie Charlotin is a Brodhead graduate.

“One Gift, One Child serves to prevent orphans and reunite families in the impoverished country of Haiti,” the news release said. “As a ministry, it provides orphaned children, or those put in orphanages by their families, safety from abuse, poverty, rejection, slavery, trafficking and hatred.

“Their end goal is to provide every child a safe environment and eventual reunion with their family. If they do not have a family, they are placed into a foster home that allows them a safe, loving environment to grow up in.”

“Additionally, surveillance for ill students or staff are being tracked by the schools and reported regularly to public health,” the release said. “School and public health staff are working together to identify close contacts, notifying close contacts of their potential exposure, and asking them to quarantine.”

People who can be tested at their doctor’s office are encouraged to do so, the release said.

“One Gift, One Child serves to prevent orphans and reunite families in the impoverished country of Haiti,” the news release said. “As a ministry, it provides orphaned children, or those put in orphanages by their families, safety from abuse, poverty, rejection, slavery, trafficking and hatred.

“Their end goal is to provide every child a safe environment and eventual reunion with their family. If they do not have a family, they are placed into a foster home that allows them a safe, loving environment to grow up in.”

Business event addresses child care needs

Quality child care as a workforce priority will be the topic of Green County Development Corp.’s annual Executive Leadership Breakfast.

The breakfast event, set for 7:45 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 2, will be virtual, with participants joining via a Zoom link.

Rob Grunewald, economist with the Community Development Department of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, will be the guest speaker.

The event is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is requested; send your name and email to gcdc@tds.net. Login information will be sent a week prior to the event.

According to a GCDC news release, “The link among access to child care, parental employment and overall economic growth is becoming more apparent all the time.

Businesses rely on their employees, and their employees rely on access to child care.

“When problems with child care arise, parents must scramble to find alternative options — or miss work to care for their children.”

Nationally, the cost of lost earnings, productivity and revenue due to child care issues totals about $57 billion each year, the release said.

GCDC and the United Way of Green County have teamed up to address child care needs. They are encouraging businesses to offer financial assistance to help provide support and resources to child care providers in Green County.

Website aims to help state entrepreneurs A new website will help Wisconsin entrepreneurs connect with resources, events and experts tailored to their needs and based in their communities.

The site, Start In Wisconsin, allows entrepreneurs to access an online directory of resources and a one-stop calendar of entrepreneur-focused events organized by geographic region.

The Wisconsin Economic Development Corp., funds the initiative with assistance from the state’s regional economic development organizations.

The online directory helps entrepreneurs find vetted local, regional and state resources that best suit their needs. The directory can be searched by ZIP code, type of business assistance needed and many other categories, all by going online to StartInWI.com.

“Interest in starting a business remains high even in the midst of the pandemic, and the role of new businesses in Wisconsin’s local economies cannot be overstated,” said Mark Lange, executive director at the Institute for Business & Entrepreneurship. “These businesses, diverse in size and sector, need ready access to support as they solve problems and serve the needs of their communities.”

High School Principal Jim Matthys recognized Stephanie Hurt and Aaron Haycraft for their work with Cardinal Virtual Academy.

Technology Director Kevin Buxton acknowledged Linda Dean for her work on the High school one-to-one device program. She was instrumental in helping get the Chromebooks ready for the Freshman class.

Comptroller Cathy Pfeuti thanked Joleen Oren, Marnie Leifker, and Laurie Sommerfeldt for all the work on the 3rdFriday counts. Their time and effort are much appreciated. Cathy also thanked Tracy Lueck for her time running extra reports in eFunds to help reconcile the monthly fees paid through eFunds due to online registration. She also recognized Laurie Sommerfeldt and Deb Huffman for their efforts in this area as well.

Building and Grounds Director Brian Kammerer thanked Janet Schliem for working on and juggling schedules to cover shifts while trying to fill the Elementary custodial position vacancy. He also thanked Shirly Zuhlke for working extra hours as well during this time. Brian also thanked Jim Andrews and Glen Watrud for their work with numerous paint projects throughout the District.

Pupil Services Director Sarah Wadsworth recognized Laura Powers and Joyce Burns for all the extra time, effort, and energy they have put in due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She also thanked Tammy Goecks, Melissa Landphier, Wayne Gratz, and Kathy Woodworth for filling in for our para-educator positions at the Middle and High Schools.

Superintendent Lenny Lueck recognized Dave Novy for completing the DPI Private School Report, Sarah Wadsworth for completing the DPI Seclusion and Restraint Report, and Kim Matthys for submitting the CTE Grant.

RESOLUTION C – SALARIES OF BOARD MEMBERS ACTION ITEM Motion by Chuck Deery, second by Doug Pinnow, that the Board members of the School District of Brodhead be paid a salary as follows and be reimbursed for expenses incurred on District business when traveling outside the District. These Board salaries will be increased by the same percentage that the Professional Staff received [1.81%]. New salaries are: President: $1,173.36; Clerk: $1,173.36; all others: $1,119.91; Negotiations: $53.45 per meeting.

RESOLUTION E – TEMPORARY LOAN AUTHORIZATION ACTION ITEM Motion by Doug Pinnow, second by Chuck Deery, that the Board of Education of the School District of Brodhead, Green and Rock Counties, State of Wisconsin be authorized to secure a temporary loan in accordance with the provisions of section 67.12 (8), Wis. Stats. for the purpose of meeting immediate expenses of maintaining the schools of the District. Be it further resolved that the amount of such temporary loan shall not exceed a sum of $800,000.00. Fewer traveling this Thanksgiving, AAA says

Fewer Americans will travel for Thanksgiving this year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, AAA forecasts. Health concerns and unemployment are the key factors in what is expected to be the lowest Thanksgiving travel volume in four years, and the largest yearly decline since the Great Recession.

AAA projects 50 million Americans will travel this Thanksgiving.

However, these figures could be even lower as Americans monitor the public health landscape, including rising COVID-19 positive case numbers, renewed quarantine restrictions and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s travel health notices.

“AAA acknowledges that the decision to travel is a personal one,” said Nick Jarmusz, director of public affairs for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “The CDC says staying home is the best way to stop the spread of COVID-19. For those who still decide to travel, we urge you to take every precaution possible to protect yourself and others.”

For Americans who make the personal decision to travel for the holiday, it is important to know the risks involved and ways to keep yourself and others safe. In addition to CDC guidance, travelers should also be aware of local and state travel restrictions, including testing requirements and quarantine orders.

AAA offers the following reminders to know before heading out: • Plan ahead – check with state and local authorities where you are, along your route, and at your planned destination to learn about local circumstances and any restrictions that may be in place; • Follow public health guidance – consistent use of face masks combined with social distancing (at least 6 feet) and regular handwashing are the best ways to lower your risk of contracting COVID-19. Be sure to pack face masks, disinfecting wipes, hand sanitizer and a thermometer to help protect and monitor your health. Also pack water and extra snacks to reduce the need to stop along your trip; • Verify before you go – call ahead to minimize any last minute surprises. Hotels – prior to any hotel stay, call ahead to ensure your hotel is open and ask what precautions they are taking to protect guests. Ask about social distancing protocols like capacity reductions in common spaces, hotel staff requirements to wear masks at all times and if all amenities are available, like restaurant dining. Car rentals – if renting a car, ask what has been done to clean the vehicle.

For extra peace of mind, use disinfecting wipes to wipe down door handles, steering wheels, shifters and control panels.

AAA expects to rescue more than 413,000 Americans at the roadside this Thanksgiving.

Fewer plan to fly AAA anticipates Thanksgiving air travel volume will be nearly half of last year – at 2.4 million Americans. This would be the largest one-year decrease on record.

For these travelers, holiday airfares are reportedly the lowest in three years. If flying, AAA reminds air travelers that in-flight amenities, including food and beverage services, may not be available. Also, as a precaution, wipe down your seat, armrest, belt buckle and tray table using disinfecting wipes.

Travel by “other modes” is forecast to hit record lows. This field — which includes buses, trains and cruises — is expected to decline 76%, to 353,000 travelers. The decline comes as cruise ships remain docked and more travelers opt for car trips instead of taking buses or trains.

Wednesday busiest day The highest volume of traffic will be the afternoon of Wednesday, Nov. 25, according to AAA’s partner, INRIX, a leader in connected car services and transportation analytics. Although traffic volume is expected to be less than in years past, travelers in major urban areas will experience increased delays at popular bottlenecks, up to 30% above normal pandemic congestion levels.

“Though fewer people will be traveling this Thanksgiving, we expect more holiday drivers than we had over the last few holidays during COVID-19,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX. “Drivers should plan alternate routes and departure times to avoid traffic jams.”

Lower gas prices Those who decide to hit the road for the holiday will find cheaper gas prices than last year. On average, U.S. gas prices are nearly 50 cents lower than last Thanksgiving.

The national average was $2.11 per gallon late last week. Thanksgiving gas prices haven’t been that low since 2015.

“Thanksgiving gas prices should remain lower than last year, but drivers shouldn’t be surprised if they inch higher in the coming weeks,” Jarmusz said. “The fuel market is excited about the news of a possible coronavirus vaccine and the hope of an eventual return to normalcy. Crude oil and wholesale gasoline prices both increased this week, which should stop gas prices from falling much further.”

For the purposes of this forecast, the Thanksgiving holiday travel period is defined as the five-day period from Wednesday, Nov. 25, to Sunday, Nov. 29.
