World War II veteran and hospice care patient presented with Quilt of Valor Frank DiPiazza, WWII Veteran and 105-year-old Agrace Hospice Care patient, was honored on Nov. 10 with a Quilt of Valor. A Quilt of Valor is a quality, handmade quilt that is machine or hand-quilted with three layers, each with a special meaning. The top of the quilt’s colors, shapes and fabrics represent the many communities and individuals; the batting in the center represents hope that the quilt will bring warmth, comfort and peace to its recipient; and the backing represents the strength of the veteran. Frank was nominated for this honor by staff at All Saints Assisted Living in Madison, where he lived before moving to Agrace’s hospice residence in Madison. “I can say that this was all very unexpected,” said Frank. The quilt was made and presented by representatives from the Sugar River Quilts of Valor – a foundation

whose mission is to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor. “We are honored to award a Quilt of Valor to veterans like Frank who have done so much for our country,” shared Susan LeVan-Green, Sugar River Quilts of Valor representative. “Frank is the oldest veteran my chapter has ever awarded with this honor.” Agrace participates in the We Honor Veterans program, a collaboration between the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to help improve the care veterans receive from hospice and palliative care providers. Through this program and the Agrace Veterans Task Force, Agrace Hospice Care patients who are veterans are often recognized with certificates of service, pinning ceremonies, and other cere-

monies like Quilts of Valor. Agrace also offers Vet-to-Vet volunteers to its hospice care patients who are veterans. These volunteers are veterans themselves, and they provide companionship, support, and understanding to other veterans at end of life. On Nov. 10, a private Veterans Day ceremony took place at Agrace to honor veteran patients – as well as their volunteers, staff and family members who have served. To learn more about how Agrace honors veterans, visit Agrace.org/Veterans. Founded in 1978, Agrace is a nonprofit, community-supported health care organization dedicated to providing high-quality care and support to people who are aging, ill, dying or grieving. With offices in Madison, Janesville, Baraboo, Dodgeville and Oconomowoc, Agrace serves more than 1,700 patients and cliSUBMITTED PHOTO Brodhead Independent Register ents across southern WisconFrank DiPiazza, WWII veteran and 105-year-old Agrace Hospice Care patient in sin every day. their Madison center, was honored on Nov. 10 with a Quilt of Valor.

Lincoln-Tallman Museum Holiday Tree Show lights up the season More than 100 creatively decorated trees will fill the Lincoln-Tallman Museum at the Rock County Historical Society’s (RCHS) annual Holiday Tree Show. Each tree is sponsored and decorated by local businesses, nonprofits, and individuals. Open-house tours of the festively adorned historic home, located at 440 N. Jackson St. in Janesville, will run from Nov. 24 until Dec. 30. Presented by Blackhawk Community Credit Union (BHCCU), the Holiday Tree Show features trees and trimmings of all types and sizes, in both the main and upstairs levels of the Lincoln-Tallman Museum. This year’s tours include several new highlights, including historic Lionel trains, and a bedroom filled with pink trees, many sponsored and decorated by women-owned businesses. As visitors step into the mansion, one evergreen that will be hard to miss is a 20foot “Memory Tree,” filled with photographs of loved ones no longer with us. The photos were submitted by their families to McCann Floors, which is sponsoring the memory tree for the second year. The tree spans two levels of the museum, from the first floor through the historic home’s ellipses. Trees are still available to sponsor by contacting Kris Mathesius at RCHS via email at operations@rchs.us or by phone at 608-756-4509 ext. 1003. “The annual Holiday Tree Show truly embodies the spirit of the season, with so many local businesses and nonprofits partnering with RCHS to bring joy to our community and to people around the re-

gion,” said Timothy Maahs, RCHS’ Executive Director. “The tree show keeps growing, with more trees – and a few surprises. People of all ages enjoy this event.” This year, Father Christmas will be at the tree show and available for photos during all tours through Dec. 23. Families, individuals – and even pets – are welcome to enter the mansion at no cost and take a photo with Father Christmas. Donations are welcome. To stay and tour, simply

purchase a ticket at the door. New this season, all are invited to stop in the Lincoln-Tallman Museum “speakeasy” in the lower level for a cup of cheer and camaraderie. Visitors are welcome to sip their beverages as they stroll through the entire mansion. The speakeasy is a cash bar and open during all tour hours. RCHS’ Holiday Tree Show dates will again correspond closely with the Rotary Botanical Garden’s Holiday Light Show, offering people

several festive events to enjoy in one day. Opening day is Nov. 24, with the season running through Dec. 30. Hours are Thursdays and Fridays 3 to

7 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays noon to 4 p.m. Also open daily between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, but closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Tickets are available online at www.rchs. us/christmas and may be used

on any tour day. Tickets will also be sold at the door during tour hours. Price is $15; free for anyone age 15 and under. School District of Janesville employees receive a $5 discount by showing their SDJ badge.
