Orfordville Firefighters visit Parkview Elementary The Orfordville Fire Department visited Parkview Elementary School as part of the Fire Prevention Month program on Oct. 10.

Sean Beggs, Nick Ciabatti, Jake Grenawalt and Lt. Wyatt Hough provided an ambulance and a fire truck for students to see.

Derek Nimmer of the Rock County 911 Center was also on hand to explain to students how to prepare for, and make, 911 calls.

Nimmer also presented a number of hypothetical situations – such

as a fight with a sibling, a house fire, and so on - to the students, and asked them if they would call 911. Nimmer further explained that the decision whether or not to call can depend on the caller’s age, and stressed that it is better to call if they were unsure.

Nimmer told the students the most important thing to do if they call 911 is stay on the line.

If students were to accidentally called 911, they should still stay on the line to let dispatchers know

everything is finek and it was a mistake; otherwise, the 911 Center has to try to contact them and make sure there isn’t an emergency.

Nimmer told students to provide an address of their location, if possible, and recommended they each learn their home addresses, Nimmer added that if a student did not know the address, they could go outside and look for a street sign and house number.

The fire department personnel showed the student s the fire truck and ambulance and explained the

various items in both vehicles.

They also talked to the student s about fire safety.

Students were asked what they should do if their clothing caught fire. The older ones all knew “Stop, drop and Roll,” while the younger students were less sure.

Hough demonstrated the maneuver for kindergarten and first grade students, and students then practiced the move on their own, focusing especially on covering the face immediately.

Hough also donned his complete

firefighter gear for the students., and explained to older students the purpose of each instrument and piece of equipment.

Younger students were familiarized with the sight of a firefighter in full uniform, so they learn to identify them as helpers in case of emergency.

After a question and answer session, the firefighters joined the students in the cafeteria for lunch, which provided students one more opportunity to speak to their neighborhood firefighters.

Quitting smoking lowers your risk for smoking-related diseases and can add years to your life.

Cigarette smoking causes more than 480,000 deaths each year in the United States. This is nearly one in five deaths.

Smoking causes more deaths each year than all the following causes combined: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), illegal drug use,

alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries, and firearm-related incidents.

Smoking causes about 90% of all lung cancer deaths and about 80% of all deaths from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

In addition, smoking can cause heart disease, stroke and increases risk for cancer almost anywhere in the body. Smoking damages nearly every organ and affects overall health.

Free Family Law Clinic now open Friday mornings This Friday will mark the start of new hours for Green County Family Law Clinic. On Friday, Nov. 3 and Friday, Nov. 17, the clinic will be open from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

The clinic is a no-cost service for people representing themselves in court. The clinic is staffed by Green County attorneys and other volunteers familiar with family law issues.

It provides assistance for low-income people who are in need of assistance filling out the necessary paperwork for child support, child placement,

custody and divorce cases in family court. There is no charge for assistance at the clinic.

Services at the clinic are by appointment only, and they are available to individuals who have demonstrated economic need. No walk-ins are accepted. Pet Amputees can lead fulfilling lives For many pet owners, the thought of their furry friend losing a limb can be scary or sad. However, pets with certain conditions, such as bone cancer, can benefit from amputating a limb. In fact, in some situations, amputation can actually improve a pet’s quality of life.

Dr. Jacqueline Davidson, clinical professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, explained how animal amputees can still live normally.

“Amputation can definitely improve a pet’s quality of life, particularly when the pet is in pain that cannot be controlled with medication,” Davidson said. “Most pets do so well with three legs that they can return to their previous level of function within several weeks after the surgery.”

Some of the most common reasons for amputation include cancer in the leg and severe trauma that damages the limb so much that it is not possible to treat it. In other cases, the limb can be saved, but the cost of treatment is too expensive for clients.

Other reasons for amputation may be nerve damage to a leg or a severe infection that is not treatable with antibiotics.

No matter the reason, amputation is a major surgery that requires anesthesia and recovery time. How quickly the pet recovers after surgery depends on the reason for the amputation.

“If the pet was already lame because of pain from the cancer or trauma, then the pet may be almost

immediately more comfortable after surgery,” Davidson said.

“In situations where the pet was still using the leg, it may require several weeks to develop strength in the other legs. Regardless, almost every pet will be up and walking as soon as they awaken from the anesthesia.”

In other cases, such as when only the lower part of the leg needs to be removed, pets can be fitted with a prosthetic leg. Davidson explained that most pets will use the prosthetic leg within minutes, but there is a “break-in” period during which the

“Although prostheses can be beneficial for some pets, they require additional expense and dedication on the client’s part.”

Albany Women’s Club seeks volunteers for holiday programs The Albany Women’s League was founded 45 years ago to help the community of Albany. Needs of the community have changed, and this year the group is again throwing in its efforts with the Empty Stocking Project and a scholarship for a community-minded senior at the high school.

The Empty Stocking Project helps children living in the Albany School District have their winter needs met.

Residents are encouraged to donate boots coats, hats and gloves for any size child are welcome and much appreciated. The program also helps children provide gifts for their children. The group also provides a food basket if requested by the family.

Come Thanksgiving, there will

be a tree at Town Bank in Albany where residents can pick up a decoration with each child in the program wants or needs.

Any help with this program would be greatly appreciated.

One of the biggest fundraisers for this program will be the Annual Pie Sale, from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Nov. 4, at Town Bank in Albany, Wis. You are advised to come early, as the event usually sells out.

Luther’s most famous words were spoken at the Diet of Worms: “I cannot and will not recant anything, for to go against conscience is neither right nor safe. Here I stand, I can do no other, so help me God.” So the question is, “What was Luther being asked to recant?”

The answer: all of his writings that were set on a table before him, writings which were based on the Bible, God’s Holy Word.

To go against any part of God’s holy Word, to call any of it false, was to go against his conscience.

To Martin Luther, every single belief that he wrote about, spoke about in his sermons, had to be based on God’s Holy Word, not on human thought or reason. We live in a day and age where the words “Well, I think…” carry tons of weight—just read any kind of blog or Facebook or Twitter, and you will see this to be true. What Luther wrote and shared with the world, his beliefs, were based on the words of God in the Holy Bible.

If Luther delivered a sermon, or taught a class about what things we should believe, he had one or more passages of the Bible to prove it. In fact, he challenged those who op-

posed him that if they could prove to him—from God’s Word—that his beliefs were false, he would change them. But no one ever did. That’s because his beliefs were based on God’s Word, and not personal opinion. So, since many of Rome’s beliefs and practices were not based on God’s Word, Luther was never challenged.

Luther’s beliefs can basically be summed up in four phrases—that we are saved…by grace alone, by faith alone, by Jesus Christ alone, and by the Scriptures alone.

We believe that “grace” is God’s undeserved love for sinners. Romans 3:23 reminds us that “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” But our God loved us; He showed us His amazing grace by sending His Son to suffer and die on the cross to pay for our sins. That is love that we sinners didn’t deserve.

But through faith in Jesus Christ, eternal life in heaven is ours. Ephesians 2:8-9, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works so that no one can boast.”

Luther’s first objections against the church of his day (the nailing of the 95 Theses to the door of Castle Church in Wittenburg, Germany on October 31, 1517) came because of the sale of indulgences—where people were led to believe that they could “pay for” forgiveness, for themselves and for their loved ones. This totally went against the words of the Holy Bible which says that people are

Google Suites Workshop Last Tuesday, October 24, Juda School hosted a Google Applications for Educators workshop. Teachers from Brodhead, Albany, Parkview, Monticello, and Juda attended the all-day seminar, which was held in the South Computer Lab. Dr. Tammy Frame from eClass4learning was the instructor. Teachers learned about Google extensions and addons, they worked with Google Drive, they created quizzes and surveys in Google Forms, and they made videos in Screencastify. This learning opportunity was paid for by the TEACH Grant.

National Honor Society We are introducing an anonymous hotline for the students of Juda School. The purpose of the SafeSchools Alert will be for students to report any incidents of bullying, intimidation, harassment, weapons, or drugs. There are four easy ways to report an incident: there is a website, an email, and a number to call or text.

This will help keep our school safe and protected.

On Wednesday, October 25, we promoted Unity Day and Bullying Awareness Month. Throughout the elementary and high school, students wore the color orange. The NHS also arranged an orange cupcake sale to raise money for several organizations in Green County. Thank you to all who participated.

The Wizard Of Oz Musical performances will take place November 3-5. Friday and Saturday’s performances will begin at 7 p.m., and Sunday’s performance will begin at 2 p.m. Tickets are now for sale in the office. Tickets are $6 for bleacher seats and $8 for a reserved seat on the floor.

There will be a cast party after Sunday’s performance and clean-up are completed. Students are reminded to bring in costumes and lunch for full run throughs.

Spanish Club On Thursday, October 26, all Spanish classes visited La Iguana restaurant for a culture lesson of the holiday Day of the Dead. It’s one of the most important holidays in Mexico. Spanish Club students traveled to La Iguana for lunch and received free tamales.

A reminder that all $5 dues for Spanish Club and Club shirts fees of $13 are due November 7.

STEAM The STEAM groups have been divided into classrooms where they will meet during flex on Mondays.

The first Monday, the groups worked on an activity involving stacking cups onto each other using only a rubber band and strings. Last Monday the groups were challenged to find a way to build a tower at last a meter tall using only paper. The hard part was that the tower had to be able to hold a book without falling. In the upcoming weeks, Mr.Anderson will decide the competition the students will be doing using robotic cars.

FFA Fruit Sale The Juda FFA Fall Fruit and Meat Sale is now underway, and Mr. Johnson asks for any FFA members interested in selling fruit to pick up a form from his classroom. There are apples, oranges, grapefruit, cheese spreads,

sausages, and mixed baskets to purchase. There have been some price changes on the order form because of the hurricanes in Florida. Order forms are due back to Mr. Johnson

by November 17.

Math Department Math classes have been focusing more on getting prepared for the first math meet by working on longer word problems.

Music Department The junior and seniors members of the High School Music Department attended a performance of the opera “Carmen” put on by the Madison Opera today. It was an amazing performance and wonderful experience for the choir members.

The High School Choir will be participating in the Six Rivers East High School Conference Choir on Monday, November 6. All seven schools in the conference will be bringing their High School Choirs to rehearse and sing in a concert as a mass conference choir. Allen Redford, a retired music professor from Highland Community College and BelCanto director, will be the guest conductor and clinician for the day.

Students who are participating in the choir are required to wear concert black (all black dress clothes of their own--not the normal choir tuxes and dresses) for the performance. The concert is free and open to the public, and family members are encouraged to attend.

Art Department Last week the kindergarten class worked on alphabet abstract painting, and the first graders painted pumpkins. The second graders added beads to their weaves, and the third graders had a super fun art day!

The fourth graders finished tessellation while the fifth graders continued painting their cities. The sixth graders had a work day, and the eighth graders learned about two point perspectives. The high schoolers had work time and then critiqued each other’s work.

Student Council October’s student council meeting was held October 31 during flex period. Members discussed the upcoming blood drive on November 21 and

the possibility of a winter formal.

Rec. District The annual Halloween Party was a success. Everyone who participated had a great time. Thank you all for coming and making the party a grand time.

FFA The National FFA Convention was held on October 25-28 in Indianapolis, Indiana. FFA members who attended had the chance to attend General Sessions where they learned more about FFA and how members all across the nation leave an impact.

They also had the chance to take tours around Indianapolis and on the way down in Illinois they had the chance to tour a wind farm. Members who attended from Juda were Clayton Hale, Justin Roth, Jaiden Walker, Jacob Mahlkuch, and Emily Makos. There was an FFA meeting on Monday, October 23, where members learned about their new point system. The point system involves activities that members have attended, and members have the chance to earn prizes from the point system and earn a cord for graduation.

Controlled burn set for Nov. 4 The Brodhead Fire District will be conducting a live fire training burn at 3371 W. 3rd Ave., Saturday, Nov. 4, 2017. If weather does not permit, burn will be Saturday, Nov. 11, 2017. The training will begin at approximately 7 a.m. and continue through the day and evening. Training sessions like this are invaluable to our members because of the opportunity to train with real fire and actual structures.

Bills seek to legalize hemp production

By WisPolitics.com Wisconsin Republicans are trying to make the case that bringing back large-scale hemp production would be a winner for Wisconsin agriculture and rural parts of the state.

Bills backed by Republicans have appeared in both the Wisconsin Legislature and Congress.

The state legislation, from GOP Sen. Patrick Testin and Rep. Jesse Kremer, also received bipartisan support. The bill’s authors highlighted the economic advantages it could bring to rural areas of the state.

“At a time where we are spending new high-tech industry in our urban areas – Foxconn, for example – it’s high time we reintroduce a commodity that has the potential to grow our

ag industry, create new high-tech careers and allow Wisconsin to be a manufacturer of hemp products in the Midwest and nationwide,” said Kremer, R-Kewaskum.

Wisconsin in the last century was a leading producer of hemp, but saw demand drop following World War II. In 2014, the federal government signed off on a bill to give states the ability to run hemp research programs.

Meanwhile, national lawmakers are now working on a bill backed

by U.S. Rep. Glenn Grothman, R-Glenbeulah, that would exclude industrial hemp from the Controlled Substances Act’s definition of marijuana.

Grothman says the decades of banning its production has hurt

American farmers. The bill would legalize the production of industrial hemp, which is used in products ranging from construction materials to plastic composites. It would do so by excluding industrial hemp from the Controlled Substances Act’s definition of marijuana.

Grothman, R-Glenbeulah, says the level of THC in industrial hemp is less than 1 percent.

“Non-narcotic industrial hemp makes our economy stronger by providing an additional revenue stream for farmers, and is useful in other areas like construction and manufacturing,” he said.

Kremer, joined by representatives from the ag industry, applauded those efforts, while also touting hemp’s uses, including in the tex-

tile industry and as insulation for homes, brake pads and other health benefits.

They also addressed a key misconception about hemp: that it, like marijuana, will also produce a high.

While they are both forms of cannabis, the low percentage of THC in hemp means it won’t happen, they said.

Calling it an issue of “mistaken identity association with its recreational cousin,” Wisconsin Farmers Union Government Relations Director Kara O’Connor said the myth led to farmers losing out.

“Farmers lost one option for financial viability, one additional option in a crop rotation, an additional option for developing processing and value-added enterprises in rural

communities,” she said.

The bill seeks to make sure that growers don’t have a drug history.

Under the state bill, the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection would be required to issue licenses that authorize the growing and processing of industrial hemp. Industrial hemp is defined as the plant Cannabis sativa with no more than 0.3 percent THC on a dry weight basis.

The bill requires an applicant for a license to provide the GPS coordinates of the land on which industrial hemp will be grown or processed and to pay a fee for the license. It also requires DATCP to obtain a criminal history search from the state Department of Justice for each applicant and prohibits DATCP from issuing a license to a person if the criminal history search shows the person has been convicted of violating the controlled substances law.

Food stamp bills seek to promote healthier eating

Access to high-speed Internet, an essential for many businesses, varies widely across counties and regions of the state.

There are 13 counties, primarily in the south, where at least 90% of residents have access to 25 mbps (megabits per second) Internet service.

Meanwhile, in 11 counties, mostly in the north, less than half of residents have such access.

Southeast Wisconsin contains the top five counties in terms of Internet access with Waukesha, Milwaukee, Kenosha, Racine, and Ozaukee each with over 96 percent of residents having access.

The bill, authored by Rep. Mike Rohrkaste and Sen. Sheila Harsdorf, has several Democratic co-sponsors. Rohrkaste, R-Neenah, characterized the bill as taking “a carrot approach, sorry for the pun.”

The other proposal, AB 530, would require DHS to conduct a pilot program to study whether the state should limit FoodShare benefits only for purchases with “sufficient nutritional value.”

That bill was authored by Rep. Treig Pronschinske, R-Mondovi.

It differs from a similar measure proposed last session that would’ve largely limited purchases to an existing list of approved foods under the WIC program for women, infants and children.

This session, Pronschinske’s bill would instead let DHS and other stakeholders develop a list of appropriate food and beverages.

Dems and some business interests lined up against the legislation, arguing the approach wasn’t evidence-based, raising concerns about how to define unhealthy foods and questioning why food stamp participants should be treated “any differently than the rest of us.”

But Pronschinske, as well as Rep. Michael Schraa, R-Oshkosh, said oversight was necessary because taxpayers are subsidizing the program.

“You talk about fair and equal, but it’s taxpayer money,” Schraa said.

“A private person can spend their money on whatever they want.”

ing the changes outlined in the bill would deter people from taking advantage of the program.

Hunger Task Force Director of Advocacy Maureen Fitzgerald said she was concerned adding “layers of bureaucracy” would mean the population increasingly signing up for the FoodShare in the state – those 55 and older – would be less inclined to do so.

“That particular population is reticent to sign up for the program,” she said, adding that she’d expect it would “increase hunger for seniors in our community.”

Wisconsin Grocers Association President and CEO Brandon Scholz said the bill would “create a patchwork of nutritional standards that change at the state line,” making it difficult for retailers trying to operate multiple stores across the country.

He also advised legislators interested in enacting the legislation to instead push for a new federal standard.

“If you really want to do it, go to D.C., get Congress to make this change and make it across the board,” Scholz said.

Meanwhile, most speakers testifying on AB 501 spoke in favor of the bill’s approach to addressing nutrition-based concerns.

sociation, argued that creating lasting consumer change means altering shoppers’ behaviors and mentalities – not making more coupons available.

And Midwest Food Processors Association President Nick George said while the bill language specifies fresh produce, canned and frozen fruits and vegetables should also be part of the program.

Overall, the bill got a positive reception from those representing the UW School of Medicine and Public Health, the Heart Association and SSM Health, as well as committee members, including Rep. Debra Kolste, who said the bill acknowledges that “eating healthy sometimes costs more.”

The bill would appropriate $425,000 to fund the pilot program – including the discounts on food, although DHS’ fiscal estimate concluded an additional $175,000 in general purpose revenue would be needed to both administer the program and contract for an independent evaluation of it.

Bill co-author Harsdorf, R-River Falls, said of the 2,000 FoodShare households that would participate in the 10-month pilot program, 1,000 would be in Milwaukee, 500 would be in Dane County and the remaining 500 would be in rural areas.

Juda School annual meeting summary NOTE; THIS SUMMARY WAS PROVIDED

BY SCHOOL BOARD PRESIDENT DENNIS PFINGSTEN

Voters at the annual meeting of the Juda School District approved a mill rate for 2017/2018 of $12.45. This is unchanged from the 2016/2017 rate.

The total amount to be levied is up $19,770 from the prior year.

In 2016-2017 the amount was $1,366,184 versus $1,385,954 to be levied in the 2017-2018 school year.

Overall the expected revenues are up $39,547 from prior year and the projected expenses are up $42,267.

The district will not use funds from their fund balance to balance the budget in the coming year.

The audited financials from

2016/17 show the district added $10,162 to the fund balance and are expecting to add $11,442 in the 2017/2018 school year. .

In other action the voters: * Approved the board salaries of 100 dollars for the President, 100 dollars for the Clerk, 60 dollars for the Vice President, regular meetings of 35 dollars per member, special meetings of 25 dollars per member and 30 dollars per member for the annual meeting. * Approved the 2017/2018 school fees and breakfast/lunch fees. * Designated the Sugar River Bank of Juda as the official place of depository. * Authorized the board to furnish textbooks at the fees the board designates.

Green County dispatch blotter Oct. 20 Motor Vehicle Crash: Personal Injury At 8:38 p.m., Deputies responded to the W7200 block of CTH C, Town of Washington, for a single vehicle rollover crash. Investigation revealed that a 16-year-old individual from Argyle, was westbound when she lost control of her vehicle and entered the ditch where the vehicle overturned. Lantz was wearing her seat belt and the air bags did not deploy in the vehicle. Lantz was injured in the crash and was transported by private vehicle to a local hospital. The vehicle had severe damage and was towed from the scene.

Oct. 21 Disorderly Conduct At 4:11 a.m., Deputies and the Brodhead Police Department responded to a residence in the N4200 block of Pandow Dr., Town of Decatur, for a disorderly conduct case.

Warrant Investigation resulted in Nicole J. Gatza, 39, of Brodhead, being arrested for Disorderly Conduct and Criminal Damage to Property. Gatza was jailed pending bond or court.

Oct. 22 Arrest At 5:00 p.m., Deputies checked on a vehicle that was parked along the road in the W4200 block of STH 11, Town of Jefferson. Investigation resulted in Ashley R. Higgins, 29, of Durand, IL, being arrested on a warrant that was issued by the Brodhead Police Department. Bond was posted for Higgins and she was released.

Oct. 25 Motor Vehicle Crash Property Damage At 7:56 a.m., Deputies, along with Belleville Police Department, responded to a motor vehicle crash at the intersection of STH 92 and CTH W, Town Exeter.

Investigation revealed that a truck, operated by Travis J. Wealti, 28, of Belleville, was southbound on STH 92 when he failed to negotiate the curve, entered the ditch, and overturned. Wealti then fled the scene.

While the crash was being investigated, Wealti returned to the scene.

Wealti advised that he was not injured and was wearing his seat belt.

Wealti was cited for Fail to Maintain Control of a Motor Vehicle and Failure to Notify Law Enforcement of Crash. The truck had severe damage and was towed from the scene.

Motor Vehicle Crash Hit and Run At 11:14 p.m., Deputies responded to the STH 11 and STH 81 interchange, Town of Monroe, for a hit and run crash.

Investigation revealed that Kenneth L. Linck, 71, of Janesville, was traveling east on STH 11 and as he moved to the left lane, his vehicle was struck by an eastbound van that was beginning to merge onto STH 11. The driver of the van briefly stopped, then fled the scene. The van was described as silver in color and the temporary license plate was partially torn off.

Linck was not injured and was

wearing his seat belt. The air bags did not deploy in his truck. Linck had minor damage to his truck and it was driven from the scene. Anyone with information on the case can contact the Sheriff’s Office at 608328-9400.

Oct. 26 Motor Vehicle Crash Property Damage At 4:55 a.m., Deputies responded to a rollover crash in the N4800 of STH 104, Town of Decatur. Deputies arrived on scene and found an SUV on its passenger side in the west ditch. An investigation revealed that David A. Scofield Jr., 28, Brodhead, was operating southbound when he lost control, and the vehicle left the roadway, struck a mailbox, and overturned before coming to rest in the west ditch.

Scofield fled the scene. He was later contacted and advised that the crash occurred around 9:45 PM. Scofield reported wearing his seatbelt and sustaining no injuries. There was no airbag deployment. The vehicle was towed due to severe disabling damage. Citations are pending.

Motor Vehicle Crash Property Damage: At 7:55 a.m., Deputies responded to a vehicle in the ditch in the N4300 block of STH 69, Town of Monroe. Upon arrival, there was no one around the vehicle. The vehicle appeared to be traveling north when it crossed the roadway and entered the west ditch line. The vehicle tried to drive south in the ditch when it drove into a creek and became stuck.

The vehicle sustained disabling front-end damage and was towed from the scene. There was no airbag deployment.

The registered owner was contacted and advised that Antwoyn L. Johnson, 45, New Glarus, was operating the vehicle. Deputies were unable to contact Jonhson. Johnson will be issued citations for Operating a Motor Vehicle with No Valid Driver’s License, Operator Failure to Notify Police of an Accident, Operating a Motor Vehicle Without Insurance, Operating Left of Center Line, and Failure to Maintain Control of the Vehicle. He will have a court date.

Marsh was arrested for Operating While Under The Influence of Alcohol. Marsh was also cited for Failure To Maintain Control of a Motor Vehicle, Failure to Stop at a Stop Sign, and Failure to Notify DMV of an Address Change. Marsh was released to a responsible party pending a mandatory court appearance.

Oct. 28 Assault At 3:04 PM deputies were advised of an assault that occurred in a vehicle in the N3700 block of STH 104, Town of Decatur. Investigation resulted in Nicholas T. Dasko, 18, of Brodhead, being arrested for strangulation, battery and disorderly conduct. Dasko was jailed pending court.

Probation and Parole Arrest At 8:05 PM deputies arrested Steven D. Rowley, 44, of Monroe at a residence in the N1600 block of Bethel Rd, Town of Clarno. Rowley was arrested on a warrant that was issued by the Wisconsin Department Corrections. Rowley was jailed.

Oct. 29 Domestic Abuse At 12:15 a.m. deputies along with New Glarus Police Department responded to a residence in the W5300 block of Highland Dr., Town of New Glarus, for a domestic disturbance.

Investigation resulted in Kyle B. Montgomery, 38, of New Glarus being arrested on charges of domestic battery. Montgomery posted bond and was released pending court.

Motor Vehicle Crash Personal Injury and OWI At 2:42 a.m. deputies along with Brodhead EMS, Brodhead Fire, Brodhead Police Department, and Green County EMS responded to the N2600 block of Red Cedar Ln, Town of Decatur, for a one-vehicle crash with injuries.

Investigation revealed that Trent W. Gerber, 27, of Brodhead was going southbound on Red Cedar Ln when the truck left the road and struck a tree. Gerber reported wearing his seat belt and was injured in the crash. Gerber was transported by Brodhead EMS to Janesville Mercy.

A passenger in the vehicle was Steffan J. Guilbault, 28, of Fort Walton Beach, FL. Guilbault was wearing his seat belt and was injured in the crash. Guilbault was transported

by Green County EMS to the Monroe ER. A passenger in the vehicle was James M. Covert, 28, of Brodhead. Covert was wearing his seat belt and was injured in the crash.

Covert was transported by Green County EMS to the Monroe ER. Gerber was arrested for operating while under the influence (alcohol) causing injury. Gerber was also cited for failure to maintain control of a motor vehicle and was released pending court. The truck sustained severe damage and was towed from the scene. The air bags did not deploy.

Oct. 27 Operating While Under The Influence/Motor Vehicle Crash – Personal Injury At 2:06 a.m., Deputies, Belleville Fire, and Belleville EMS responded to the intersection of County Highway CC and Tunnel Road, in the Town of Exeter, for a one vehicle roll over. The investigation revealed that Jordan K. Marsh, age 23 of rural Brodhead, was eastbound on Tunnel Road when he failed to stop at a stop sign and lost control of his vehicle.

The vehicle rotated clockwise, slid through the intersection, and overturned in the southeast ditch. The vehicle sustained disabling damage; there was no airbag deployment.

The vehicle was towed from the scene. Marsh reported wearing his seatbelt. Marsh sustained minor sations; defendants are presumed ininjuries and was transported to the nocent until proven guilty in a court Monroe Clinic Emergency Room. of law.

STEPHEN COOK Stephen R. Cook, age 64, of Sharpsburg, KY, formerly of Brodhead, passed away suddenly on Thursday, October 26, 2017, from a heart condition. He was born on June 23, 1953 in Platteville, WI, the son of Laurence and Lavora (Rice) Cook. He married Suzanne Warriner in Beloit, WI on June 27, 1981.

Stephen lived in Brodhead for approximately 20 years and founded and formerly operated the Brodhead Collision Center.

He was also active in the National Field Archery Association, holding many titles and awards.

He participated as an endorsed archer for Browning and was an avid bow hunter.

He is survived by his wife, Suzanne; two children, Betsy Cook and Daniel Cook; three brothers, Donald (Karen) Cook, Keith (Bea) Cook, Michael Cook; five sisters, Carol (Ron) Loomis, Cheryl (Russell) Warriner, Cathy (Jeff) Gilbertson, Conie (Michael) Pederson, Marylin Hoffman; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Lyle, Dennis, Larry, and Toby Cook, and a sister, RYAN BROEGE PHOTO The Brodhead Independent-Register Myla Dalen.

A Memorial Service will be held at 3 pm on Tuesday, October 31, This old truck along First Center Avenue on the east side of Brod- 2017 at the D.L. Newcomer Funerhead was alight with fright and a mysterious driver last weekend. The al Home, Brodhead, WI, with Pastor truck and display is reportedly the work of Bill and Shirley Hahn.
