Local NAMI to participate in fundraising walk
On Saturday, Oct. 8, Trev or’s Team and Bonk’s Brigade of NAMI Green County will walk in support of those with a severe mental illness and their families and in memory of those who struggled and lost their fight with this disease.
The NAMIWalks event will be held at Olin-Turville Park, 1156 Olin-Turville Ct., Madi son.
NAMI Green County was formed by Conni Bigler, moth er of Trevor Moen, who died by suicide in October of 2007 at the age of 29. Trevor had been diagnosed with Bipolar Disor der in his late teens.
Relatives and friends of Trevor – dubbed Trevor’s Team – will walk for the 14th time this year. The team varies a little from year to year, but the sup port is always there. Some of the original members are now
married and bring their children to the event. This year’s event coincides with the 15th anniver sary of the loss of Trevor.
As of 2021, Trevor’s Team has brought in more than $75,000. For the first few years, the revenue was divided equal ly between NAMI Dane Coun ty and NAMI Green County.
In the last three years, NAMI Green County has been able to retain 70% of the revenue.
Green County NAMI wel comes the opportunity to walk around Lake Monona in Madi son.
Bonk’s Brigade led by NAMI Green County member Carrie Drews of Browntown will be on board again this year for Green County after joining last year.
NAMI Green County’s mis sion is to educate, support and advocate for those they know
and care about who live with a mental illness. There are also programs available for family and friends. NAMI is dedicat ed to improving the lives of individuals affected by mental illness.
Bigler has served almost 14 years on the Board of Directors, and said that “working with NAMI Green County helped me heal after the death of my son.
Having a purpose and the ability to see that these dona tions are used to help others kept Trevor’s memory in a good place. Another mother’s son is most likely alive today with support from NAMI, counsel ing and proper medication.”

Festival enlivens heart of city with fun and good cause
Fall is here and the Brodhead Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce that AutumnFest is back.
The city’s annual seasonal festival will take place during the stateline Vintage Shop Hop.
The Vintage Shop Hop is a twoday self-guided road trip to more
than 400 participating shops in Southern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois.
Brodhead’s AutumnFest will occur on Saturday, Oct. 8 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Popular favorites of the festival include local food and drink, a chili contest, a vendor market,
trick or treating for children, horse wagon rides, and live music.
AutumnFest will also be moving from the square to its new location at Veterans Memorial Park, 1108 1st Center Ave., adjacent to downtown Brodhead.
Several downtown Brodhead
businesses will be participating in the Vintage Shop Hop on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 7 and 8, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
AutumnFest will give shoppers a chance to take a break, grab a bite to eat, check out visiting vendors and enjoy live entertainment in between their
shopping stops.
The Chili Contest proceeds will go to Kid Connection, Albrecht Elementary School’s Parent Teacher Organization, which works to provide resources and opportunities for the school and students, and for the Truck or Treating initiative.
Vintage Shop Hop encourages shopping small in your community
Thousands of shoppers will con verge on southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois once again for the fall edition of the popular Vintage Shop Hop, taking place on Friday and Saturday, October 7 and 8.
The event is a self-guided road trip for vintage and antique lovers in the southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois regions to satisfy their “vin tage’’ addiction and support small business at the same time. Typi cally, between 350 to 400 locally owned vintage shops, antique malls, women’s boutiques, occasional and pop-up shops, home décor, upscale consignment shops and vintage barn sales in the two-state region partici pate in this one-of-a-kind event.
What started with 180 shops eight years ago, the Vintage Shop Hop has increased in popularity with each event. “The past three years in the retail world have been brutal for brick-and-mortar stores. These small business owners sometimes need an economic shot in the arm to boost their sales in a traditionally slow re tail season, not to mention the online shopping competition. This event gives shoppers a reason to leave the house to ‘shop small and shop local’, especially during the COVID world we live in today”, say Ann Cam
pos, founder of the event. The idea came to Campos nine years ago after talking with a handful of shop own ers in her town who had experienced slow sales during the then harsh win ter. “After spending several years producing large vintage markets, I decided to marry my love of vintage decor with my background in tour ism promotion, event planning and marketing to come up with a way
to reach out and do something for local small business” Campos said, “the result is the Vintage Shop Hop.”
Social media has played a huge role in the rapid growth of the event. The event Facebook fan page was launched during the first year and has grown to over 70,000 followers between the company’s three social media pages. “The event was des tined to grow quickly. Between the
shop owners looking for a unique, low-cost way to promote not only their shop but their town too, and then add in shoppers who are excit ed to have a list of hundreds of fun shops dropped in their lap, you can’t hold them back!” Campos laughed.
The event stretches across two states from the Mississippi River on the west to Lake Michigan on the east, goes north to the Stevens Point and
Green Bay in Wisconsin and south to I-80 in Illinois.
Each shop is required to have an “in-store” promotion for the week end, and many shops go miles be yond just complimentary refresh ments (like mimosas and dessert treats). “We encourage the shops to create a day unlike the other 363 days of the year,” say Campos. As a result, shoppers will find fun promo tions like “pop a balloon” or “spin the wheel” to determine their dis count, door prizes, meet-the-maker, paint demos, live music, food trucks and free swag bags just for stopping in. Others create punch cards promo tions to get people moving around their region, hire live music and in vite food trucks to park in their lots.
All shops will be ready and waiting to greet new faces to their store and provide the shoppers with the best in customer service. “The participat ing shop owners are very passionate about the history of their antiques as well as their buildings. In order to compete with big box stores, small business owners have to be creative in their marketing efforts and work extra hard to get noticed,” Campos said. “I’m just happy I can help them

out by using my experience to bring customers to their doorstep with this fun shop ping event. To my knowl edge, it’s the biggest event of its kind in the Midwest.” Many of the shops are set in historic and unique build ings, in downtowns, villages, and the countryside brim ming with history which sets them apart from their competitors in big shopping malls. For example, shop pers who step into Vintique Junque in Monroe, Wis., can find a sweet shop filled with antiques, vintage, recycled goods and fun junk housed in a historic 1880s coal store that supplied the downtown square with coal. Or shop pers can experience “out of the box” shopping for ontrend vintage items and home décor inside a gorgeous 1882 Methodist church, complete with steeple, at The Half Full Nest in West Dundee, Ill..
Or, explore Starline Excur sion Market in Harvard, Ill., tucked inside a renovated, ivy-covered farm equipment factory built in 1888. These are just a few examples of shops located inside unique structures making the shop ping experience memorable.
Road trip planning for the Vintage Shop Hop is made easy with the interactive Google map and Master List of Shops on their website. pox is having a disproportion ate impact on Wisconsin com munities of color. Slowing the spread of monkeypox among communities at the highest risk of infection remains a top priority and requires multiple public health strategies. DHS is working with monkeypox vac cinators, local and tribal health departments, and other partners to address these disparities:
• Working with trusted health care providers and com munity-based organizations to help identify and remove barriers to getting vaccinated against monkeypox.
• Prioritizing vaccine for or ganizations that serve those at the highest risk for monkeypox.
• Increasing the network of monkeypox vaccinators throughout the state.
• Developing toolkits and other communication materials to help partners share informa tion about monkeypox.
DHS encourages all partners to continue to work with trust ed providers and communi ty-based organizations serving communities of color to help identify and remove barriers to seeking care and getting vacci nated.
Most new monkeypox cas es in Wisconsin and across the nation continue to occur in gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men. Monkey pox is not considered a sexu ally transmitted infection, but the virus that causes monkey pox spreads most easily during prolonged skin-to-skin contact, including during sex.
DHS encourages anyone who develops a new or unex plained rash to contact a doctor or other health care provider immediately. In addition, ev eryone should avoid having close skin-to-skin contact with
others who have new or unex plained rash. For those without a provider, help is available by dialing 211 or 877-947-2211, or texting your ZIP code to 898-211.
DHS strongly encourages those who are eligible to get vaccinated to do so. The mon keypox vaccine is safe and ef fective at preventing illness and is available at select locations throughout Wisconsin. If you are unable to make an appoint ment at a location offering the monkeypox vaccine, contact your local or tribal health de partment for assistance.
