Cardinals headed to playoffs By Trenten Scheidegger SPORTS WRITER
Last Friday night the Brodhead-Juda Cardinals’ football team hosted the McFarland Spartans for a late season Rock Valley Conference matchup. Both teams came in with high hopes of making the playoffs, but looming thought of not knowing weighed heavy on their shoulders. The Spartans sat just above the Cardinals in the Rock Valley standings as McFarland held a 5-3 overall record coming in, while the Cardinals sat at 4-4. The Spartans got off to a hot start after overcoming some tough spots on their first drive. A blindside block negated an early touchdown, and then a sack by Jayson Starr forced them into third and long. McFarland was able to overcome, however, with an eighteen yard touchdown run. The Cards’ first drive ended with an interception and before you knew it, McFarland held a two score lead early on. Brodhead-Juda has struggled early on in games this season, and the final regular season game was no different. Coach Matthys touched on this, saying “The
same thing that has bit us in a couple games earlier this season was not coming out right away in the first quarter. I thought we played well in the second, third, and fourth quarter.” The Cardinals found themselves in a fourth and short situation early in the second quarter, and despite needing just a couple yards for the first, Nick Naramore decided to scamper for thirty-six to set up a two yard touchdown run by Dalton Naramore. The Cards would miss the extra point, as they trailed 13-6. The Spartans then began driving again, which set up a weird sequence of events. Down in the red zone, the Spartans would fumble the ball allowing Brodhead-Juda to take over. Unfortunately, the Cardinals would fumble on their first play and the Spartans scooped the ball and took it into the endzone to go up 20-6. The Cardinals then needed a big play, and they got it by way of a forty-three-yard pass to Brady Malkow. The deep play set up a short touchdown run by Nick to bring them within eight, down 20-12. The Cards then had a tremendous
end to the half as another sack by Starr led to the offense getting the ball back, and Dalton Naramore was able to run across the goal line as the clock hit zero. Fourteen straight points allowed Brodhead-Juda to head into halftime tied at 20-20. Brodhead-Juda would score their nineteenth unanswered point to begin the second half when Cole Hoesly connected with Nick Naramore for a sixty-five-yard touchdown pass. Unfortunatey, it would be the final score of the day for the Cards. The Spartans were able to put up two late scores to steal a 3426 victory. The Naramore boys were impressive as usual, as Nick rushed for 132 yards and one touchdown, and Dalton put up 73 yards and two touchdowns of his own. Nick also had 65 yards receiving. Despite the loss, following the game Coach Matthys told me “I’m ninety percent sure we are going to make the playoffs.” Turns out, he was right as the Cardinals are setup to face off with an old, familiar opponent in River Valley for level 1 of the division four playoffs.
Madelynn McIntyre continues to impress By Trenten Scheidegger SPORTS WRITER
Last Thursday the Brodhead-Juda Cross Country teams competed in the Rock Valley Conference championship. The girls’ team, which has been led by Madelynn McIntyre in recent years, has continued to impress throughout 2019 and they did so again in the conference championship. McIntyre took first place in the championship, and it wasn’t even close. She came in with a time of 19:52. To put her dominance into perspective, the second place finisher came in nearly a full minute behind her with a time of 20:39. The impressive performance gave McIntyre another first team All-Conference award. Her coach, Curt Gratz
said “I am so proud of Maddy for her conference win this year. The Rock is a tough cross-country conference and winning it is no small task, but Maddy puts in the hard work to succeed at that level.” Maddy wasn’t the only Cardinal runner to have a great day, however. Presleigh Arnold worked hard all season long and managed to finish in tenth place in the big tournament with a time of 21:51. McIntyre gets a lot of the attention, but you cannot overlook the ability of Arnold, who has came on strong for the Cardinals this season. She earned a 2nd team All-Conference honor. Anna Skoumal was another Cardinal runner who had a solid outing with a time of 22:29. The performance was enough to earn her an
honorable mention in the Rock Valley Conference. The men’s top performer from Brodhead-Juda was Carter Urness, who came in with a time of 18:15, which was good enough for fourteenth place. Urness performed well this season and was able to receive a second team All-Conference honor. Jacob Staffen and Royce Bauer were the next two Cardinal runners in, as Staffen finished with a time of 18:42 for 21st place, and Bauer came in just behind him in 22nd place with a time of 18:43. The two were able to earn Honorable mention awards for their hard work. Between the Men’s and women’s team, Brodhead-Juda had six runners receive All-Conference honors.
