Juda students get hands-on lesson in solar power Construction of Juda School District’s new solar array began on Tuesday and Juda High School students got a first-hand look at the solar installation process. Ryan Harkins of Synergy Renewables, designed the 4-kilowatt solar array that will help the school offset its electricity consumption and reduce its utility bills.

Sixteen students, mostly seniors from Juda’s Calculus and Engineering classes participated in the installation process.

“Helping put solar panels on our school really shows what our Engineering class can accomplish,” said Juda student Tristan Geisking.

Harkins showed the students how to install the panels’ racking and connection devices, and the students also learned how solar energy is produced.

the planning stages to the installation is an experience the students will remember for years to come,” said Harkins. “The students did a fantastic job.”

In 2012, the Juda School District set a goal of generating 10% of their electricity from renewable energy. The district had 36 solar panels installed in 2014 to offset its electric use. The new solar installation adds 12 more panels to the school’s rooftop and the two installations combined offset nearly 10% of the school’s electricity.

To help with costs, Juda received grants from RENEW Wisconsin’s Solar for Good program and the Public Service Commission’s Office of Energy Innovation. These grants helped fund the solar array, and a host of other energy efficiency measures at the school including building envelope improvements, HVAC optimization, and 100% LED lighting.

“Initially, the proposed payback to the school district would take 6 years.

Now, thanks to the Energy Innovation Grant, the school is already realizing the savings,” stated Mario Millonzi, President of Upper 90 Energy and contractor on the project.

Juda is now saving over $30,000 per year in utility costs, and over $6,000 in yearly maintenance costs. The school, however, sees the cost-savings as only one part of the project’s benefits.

community, and the world better,” said Juda Math and Engineering Instructor, Scott Anderson. “This project accomplishes all three.”

Students at Juda were key to the

success of the projects. In addition to helping with the installation, they helped write grants and worked with Upper 90 on the energy saving details.

“Creating students who are aware

of their role as stewards of our world may be the single most important thing I teach,” added Anderson.

“Once they get started, it’s great to see what they can accomplish.”

DATCP reminds affected property owners to only work with trusted contractors after recent storms Due to recent severe weather in the west central region of the state, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) asks affected property owners to seek trusted contractors for repairs and to be leery of storm chasers that come knocking at your door with aggressive sales tactics.

Always use caution when interacting with travelling crews that show up at your door in the aftermath of a storm, never let them into your home, and do not give in to high-pressure pitches.

Start your search for a contractor by seeking references from neigh-

bors, friends, family, local home builder associations, and your insurance company. You can also contact DATCP’s Consumer Protection Hotline at (800) 422-7128 to check on complaints against a business.

DATCP offers these tips for homeowners with storm damage: Be wary of any contractor who knocks at your door. If your municipality has a door-to-door sales ordinance, call municipal officials to find out if the contractor holds the proper permits.

Hire a contractor based on referrals. Ask friends, neighbors, or your insurance agent for recommendations and ask contractors for refer-

ences. Before you sign a contract, contact DATCP’s Consumer Protection Hotline to see if there are complaints about the business.

Try to get a local contractor and know who will be doing the work – the contractor or a subcontractor.

Get lien waivers from anyone you pay for home repairs. It is necessary to do this because if the person collecting the money does not pay the supplier or worker, a lien could be put on your property.

Get a written contract with a start and completion date and warranty information. Also, make certain that the contract states exactly what work is to be done and what mate-

rials are to be used. Never rely on a verbal commitment.

Check with your local building inspector to see if the work requires a permit and make sure an inspector visits the job site before you provide final payment.

Request a copy of the contractor’s certificate of liability insurance.

Keep all receipts that document the cost of repairs or the replacement of damaged items.

Department of Children and Families CFA amounts announced The Department of Children and Families (DCF) announced today the funding amounts for the 201920 Children and Families Allocation (CFA) paid to counties. The figures reflect the increase to the CFA made through the 2019-21 state budget.

The opioid epidemic has drastically impacted the need for additional county welfare services. Since 2009, referral for child protective services (CPS) increased by more than 40 percent. Over that same period, the CFA only saw an increase of 9.5 percent, forcing counties to pick up a growing share of costs associated with child welfare services. The 2019-21 budget provided a $30.5 million increase over the biennium to assist counties with increased workloads, caseloads, and out-of-home placements associated with the increase in CPS referrals.

“The department is committed to working with our partners to keep

kids safe and supported in their homes, and to provide families with the services they need to be successful,” said DCF Secretary-designee Emilie Amundson. “This funding increase would not have happened had it not been for the spotlight placed on this issue by the Wisconsin Counties Association, the commitment of Governor Evers to live his values, and the legislature’s willingness to commit serious resources.”

“Wisconsin counties are on the front lines of the heroin, opioid, and meth epidemic, which has had a staggering impact on our children and families across the state,” said Wisconsin Counties Association Executive Director Mark D. O’Connell.

“We commend the Governor and the Legislature for this increase in county child welfare allocations, as it will allow counties to serve even more children and families in crisis. We

Customers have a right to cancel the contract within three business days of being notified that their insurer has denied all or any part of the claim for work. Contractors must notify customers of this right.

It is important to note that local door-to-door solicitation rules could vary by municipality, and that there are legitimate businesses that may knock on your door with a sales pitch. A good practice to follow is to request a business representative’s permit to operate if your municipality has a door-to-door sales ordinance.

BLOOD DRIVE The September 25 blood drive was a big success, with 32 pints of blood being donated! With over 96 lives saved, we would like to thank anyone who donated or volunteered.

HOMECOMING There is one more week until homecoming! The dance begins at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 5. The cost is $1 for spectators, $3 for students, and $5 for a couple.

THE DRESS UP DAYS HAVE CHANGED. Beginning Monday, September 30, the dress-up days are as follows: Monday, Twin Day; Tuesday, Tourist/Fisherman; Wednesday, Class Shirt Day; Thursday, MEME Day; Friday, Spirit Day. There will be a K-12 pep rally at 1:00 to 1:30 in the palace gym on Friday, and the parade will begin at 4:00 on Friday in Brodhead.

PARTY PROGRAM Last week, the sophomore class attended the PARTY Program in Monroe. This is a yearly event where students learn about the effects of drugs and alcohol through different speakers and an acted-out presentation.

JUDA SCHOOL BOARD The Juda School Board is in need of a board member to serve a vacant position until the election in April 2020. MONROE MORNING OPTIMIST CLUB The Monroe Morning Optimists are inviting all third through fifth

grade students to a Roller Skating Party Tuesday, October 8, at The Roller Den. The doors open at 5:45 p.m., and the event goes until 8:00 p.m. Each student will receive one treat ticket, and entry is free!

ART DEPARTMENT This week in the Art Department the kindergarten is finishing their shape man project. The first grade is finishing their “fishy” portraits. The second and third grade is starting the tiny art show. The fourth grade will finish their Lego portrait this week.

The fifth grade will continue to work on the “keyhole” project. The sixth grade is adding gold paint and hieroglyphs. The middle school rotation class is working on their abstract wire sculpture. The high school art classes are finishing up their vision projects this week.

THE LITTLE MERMAID Musical practices have been going really well, and we are very excited to perform! Some characters in the musical are Mason Kammer as Grimbsy, Blake Adkins as Flounder, Lia Daniels as Scuttle, and Robbie Olmedo as the Pilot! We hope to see you at the performances on November 8-10!

ENGINEERING The Engineering class just started construction on the new musical prop.

In years previous they built the tornado for The Wizard of Oz and a giant piano for Big. This year they are constructing something to keep the prince from going “under the sea.”

MUSIC DEPARTMENT The music students are still working very hard to prepare for their upcoming events. The band will be playing at the Brodhead-Juda homecoming parade. Come watch them play in the parade on Friday, October 4, at 4 p.m. The choir also has an upcoming event where they will be

singing at the Veterans Day Assembly at Juda School.

STUDENT COUNCIL Each class will be in charge of decorating a different hallway and creating a video skit for homecoming. Whichever class creates the best of each will get points that count toward the spirit stick. The games during the week of homecoming will also count toward the spirit stick.

BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS High schoolers who want to be a part of the program need to have the packet filled out by the middle of October. Packets are still available in the office.

FFA Upcoming events for FFA: On October 3 is the Manufacturing Trip. The bus will leave from the high school in the morning. Permission slips are due to Miss Beitz that morning. A week after, October 10, is the Cullen Construction Career Fair. Stop by to see Miss Beitz for a permission slip.

MIDDLE SCHOOL The middle school had an awesome Wacky Wednesday this month!

Those who were able to participate had many activity options. They could have open gym, play board games or creative games with Miss Wyss, or could also just hang out.

VOLLEYBALL The Juda Girls’ Volleyball Team started the second round of conference late last week, adding a loss to the books. The Albany Comets took the Panthers in 5, with an all-out effort. The team saw an outstanding performance from Montana Steinmann Thursday night as she ended the game with a total of 46 digs.

The Panthers will be up against the Pecatonica Vikings and Monticello Ponies this week. A reminder that all JV games will start at 6:00 with Var-

sity following around 7:15.

CROSS COUNTRY The Cardinals had a great race at Bigfoot on September 24. The Boys’ Varsity placed 5th, and the Boys’ JV placed 6th, while the Girls’ Varsity placed 6th, and the Girls’ JV placed 6th. Royce Brauer represented the Varsity Panthers with a 21:02 while Anna Skoumal ran a 25:05. A list of Juda runners and their times are as follows: Trent Anderson - 22:57, Austin Paffel - 24:16, Ellie Riemer - 28:48, Lydia Bouc - 30:41, Liana Daniels - 30:51, Jon Klopfenstein (MS) - 12:17, Ruby Sheaffer (MS) - 15:37. The Cardinals’ next meet is on October 1 at Jefferson and then October 5 at Platteville.

SPANISH CLUB The Spanish Club is accepting new members! If anyone is interested in joining, let Mrs. Williams know. Requirements include being enrolled in a Spanish class. The first meeting will be posted soon.

TEACHER OF THE WEEK This week’s Teacher of the Week is Curtis Brown. He teaches high school social studies classes and is our school’s athletic director. This is his sixteenth year of teaching and his fifth year as the athletic director. He attended UW-Platteville.

His favorite classes in high school were US history, Wisconsin history, and accounting. He isn’t much of an animal person, but if he’d have to choose one, it would be the panther.

SEASON PASSES Season passes this year are $30 dollars for students and $40 dollars for adults. This year they are doing something new: Season passes also work at Brodhead for Wrestling and Football. Get your tickets and enjoy the games.

SENIOR OF THE WEEK The Senior of the Week this

week is Taylor Golackson. Her favorite high school memory is “the lunchtime conversations with my friends.” Her favorite teacher is Mrs.Bredeson because she never fails to make her laugh. Taylor’s future plans are to attend Edgewood and pursue a career in nursing. If she won the lottery, she would buy a boat and a house on the lake. If she could live in one state for the rest of her life, it would be Arizona because of the wide range of scenery.

SENIOR OCCUPATION PRESENTATIONS The senior class has made presentations about the occupations they would like to major in. The presentations include the degree needed to get the occupation, duties the job includes, a typical work schedule, their earnings, and a couple similar occupations. These presentations will be added to their college presentations and will be presented to younger classes throughout the school year during ACP flex period.

The Legislature’s Joint Committee for Review of Administrative Rules called for a preliminary hearing on the scope statement that outlines the parameters of the rulemaking. The DNR sought NRB approval at the September meeting for that hearing. Don’t let the flu stop Fall fun The excitement of returning to school, going to local football games, and other fall activities will soon be followed by flu season, and health officials are encouraging people to schedule their flu vaccines now to protect themselves, their children, elderly relatives, and their communities.

“The flu can be dangerous for many people, including pregnant women, young children, people age 65 and older, and others whose immune systems aren’t working well,” said Jeanne Ayers, State Health Officer and Division of Public Health Administrator. “Getting your flu vaccine protects you and so many others in your community, and helps prevent missed school or work.”

Nationally, some 17 million workdays are missed due to flu. During last year’s Wisconsin flu season, 3,483 people were hospitalized and

604 were admitted to the intensive care unit due to flu-related complications. In the previous flu season, 7,526 people were hospitalized with the flu, the highest year on record.

Getting the flu vaccine helps reduce your chances of getting sick from the flu and shortens the amount of time someone is sick. The flu vaccine can also reduce the symptoms if you do get the flu. To schedule your flu vaccine, contact your provider, or use this vaccine finder to locate a clinic or pharmacy providing them.

The Vaccines for Children Program provides flu and other vaccines to eligible children at low or no cost.

Other ways to help avoid the flu include washing your hands, coughing or sneezing into a sleeve or tissue, and staying home if you do have the flu so you don’t spread germs to others.

Rock for Recovery The public is cordially invited to attend the 4th Annual Rock for Recovery Event to be held at the Rock County Fairgrounds on Oct. 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Craig Center located at 1301 Craig Avenue, Janesville, WI. Rock for Recovery is a collaborative event intended to showcase local resources focused on prevention, treatment and recovery support for those dealing with addiction.

This event is organized by the Rock County Rx Drug Abuse and Heroin Task Force, Janesville Mobilizing 4 Change, and the Rock County Drug Court Treatment Program with funding and support from Rock County Human Services.

The Rock for Recovery event will begin with an awareness walk at 6 p.m. followed by a resource fair to include local guest speakers at 6:30 p.m. A candlelight vigil will be held at 7:45 p.m. in remembrance of lives lost to the disease of addiction. Light refreshments will be served.

Village of Orfordville regular board meeting summary CALL TO ORDER: President Gary Phillips called the meeting to order on Monday, Sept. 23, 2019 at 7 p.m. Present were President Phillips, Tina Suiter Meyers, Beth Schmidt, Chuck Boyce, Terry Gerber, Nikki Tuffree, and Jason Knox. Also present were Deb Johnson, Frank Tilleson, David Olsen, Kevin Wellnitz, Nick Todd, Chief Brian Raupp, and Clerk Sherri Waege.

AGENDA VERIFICATION: Clerk Waege verified that on September 20, 2019, copies of the revised agenda were delivered to the President and Trustees; and posted at the Village Hall, Library, and the Farmers & Merchant’s Bank. There were no additions made to the agenda.

MINUTE APPROVAL: Motion by Knox, seconded by Boyce to approve the minutes of the Regular Board Meeting of September 9, 2019 and Special Board Meeting of September 16, 2019. Motion carried.

CITIZENS WISHING TO BE HEARD: Deb Johnson of 313 N. Main Street was present and explained that they are having traffic problems on N. Main Street again. Johnson explained that many of the residents are not happy about the speeding and that it is worse in the mornings and afternoons now that school has started. Johnson further explained that the kids are having a hard time getting across the street on their way to and from school. Johnson would like stop signs on N. Main Street because it is not safe and the speeding has gotten worse.

Chief Raupp explained that they have not received many complaints in regards to speeding on N. Main Street lately; however, there have been complaints on other streets in town. Chief Raupp will have the department target N. Main Street again. Chief Raupp explained that they are looking into putting flashing lights in the crosswalk area of E. Church Street and N. Main Street.

President Phillips suggested that the item be placed on the Police Committee agenda for discussion.

VILLAGE PRESIDENTS UPDATE: President Phillips explained that the UW Milwaukee students have been in town three times working on their project with the Village. President Phillips further explained that they will be back in October with a draft of their findings from interviews with business owners and residents. President Phillips further added that the students will host an open house in December with a full scale model of what they see in the future. The open house will be open to the public.

President Phillips explained that Chief Raupp, Nick Todd, and himself attended the third meeting on June Days for 2020. President Phillips added that the discussion is farther down on tonight’s agenda.

lips explained that the second meeting was a success and that more discussion was held on creating a committee so that the event can be improved and move forward, those in attendance from the Legion were going to take the idea back to the executive board at the Legion for discussion. President Phillips explained that the third meeting was held and the subject of forming a committee was brought up. President Phillips explained that Allan Morris told them that “ the Legion Executive Board did not want a committee because nobody was going to tell them what they could or could not do.”

Discussion held on the cost to the Village for putting on the event. Additional discussion held on continuing to invest tax dollars in the event, as the tax dollars spent are often more than what the Legion makes from hosting the event. Tilleson explained that there should be checks and balances in place if the Village is investing tax dollars for a fund raiser for the Legion. Discussion held on if there is a report given to show how the event does financially after the event. No one present has seen an actual report from the event.

Additional discussion held on continuing to invest tax dollars in the event if there are no improvements made, as the village budget is tight and money is needed in the police department and public works.

President Phillips explained that he feels there are four options for moving forward: 1. Only pay for the village portion of the fireworks, 2. Cut funding completely for June Days and be done, 3. Agree to continue funding if a committee is made, and 4. Continue as it is.

The Board would like the event to continue; however, they feel much is needed to be improved for the event to become successful again.

Motion by Tuffree, seconded by Boyce to continue to provide the American Legion with funding and continued use of Purdy Park for the June Days Event with the following conditions: 1. A committee of the community is formed to include two village employees, two members of the American Legion, 2 members of the Sons of American Legion, 2 members of the Women’s Auxiliary, and two members from each community group that wishes to participate.

2. A Chairman, Treasurer, and Secretary are appointed for the committee which will assist in the organization of the event and also to track the financial success of the fundraiser.

Roll Call Vote-Suiter Meyers, Schmidt, Boyce, Gerber, Tuffree, Knox, and President Phillips-all YES. Motion carried.

VOUCHERS: Motion by Knox, seconded by Boyce to approve the vouchers for $192,491.30 (including Baer Insurance $11,561.00, Mid State Equipment $16,400.00, Portzen Construction $137,075.65, and Town & Country Engineering $13,974.40).

Interrogation Room Lock. Chief Raupp explained that the interrogation room electronic lock has never worked correctly since the building was remodeled. Chief Raupp further explained that the electrician and contractor point fingers at each other as far as what the issue is, and neither has replied from the letter that was sent from Attorney Oellerich. Chief Raupp explained that he feels a simple key code lock can be installed by our Public Works Department for $130.00 to solve the problem. Motion by Knox, seconded by Boyce to purchase the key code lock for $130.00 and have the Public Works Department install it.

Motion carried.

Amend Ordinance 304-13 regarding stop signs. Frank Tilleson was present to explain that the traffic speeds on E. Rime Street have continued to be a problem. Discussion held on making the intersection of N. Pine Street and E. Rime Street a three way intersection to slow down traffic. Suiter Meyers explained that she felt that the intersection of N. Mowe and E. Rime Street should be considered, Suiter Meyers further explained that both s E. Church Street and E. Rime Street would then have four way stops at the same location on each street. Motion by Gerber, seconded by Knox to amend Ordinance 304-13 to allow a three way stop intersection at N. Pine Street and E. Rime Street. Motion carried with Suiter Meyers voting no. Motion carried.

Amend Chapter 246 regarding property cleanup. Chief Raupp explained that Ordinance 246 does not allow for the Police Department to have full enforcement in regards to property nuisances and cleanup. Chief Raupp explained that he met with Attorney Oellerich to revise the ordinance to allow the Police Department to enforce the ordinances. Motion by Knox, seconded by Boyce to amend Chapter 246 of the Village Ordinance so the Police Department has more control over enforcement. Motion carried.

June Days Funding. President Phillips explained that Nick Todd and Chief Raupp met after June Days this year to discuss the problems that they had and what can be done for improvements moving forward. The Village requested that the Legion attend meetings to discuss what improvements and changes can be made to continue June Days and to make it successful again.

President Phillips explained that the Village uses tax dollars to assist with the event which is a fundraiser for the Legion. The Village pays for two thirds of the fireworks, installs a temporary electric service for the carnival employees, and provides village employees for help with set up, working at the park during the event, and for cleanup when the event is done. Phillips explained that the first meeting was a success and that those in attendance were open to suggestions and the possibility of forming a committee of other members of community groups and the village to organize and assist with the annual event. Street Closure for Sather’s Customer Appreciation Event. Kevin Wellnitz was present to request a portion of W. Brodhead Street be closed for his annual Customer Appreciation Event on Sunday, September 29, 2019. Wellnitz requested that the first block from the intersection of Highway 213 to the intersection of Clark Street be closed from 8:00 a.m.to 11:00 a.m. Motion

by Gerber, seconded by Suiter Meyers to close the first block of W. Brodhead Street, from the intersection of Highway 213 to Clark Street from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for the annual customer appreciation event at Sather’s Mobil.

Joint Powers Agreement. Motion by Knox, seconded by Gerber to approve the annual Joint Powers Agreement with Rock County Communications.

Motion carried.

Roof Replacement at the Village Hall. Todd provided two bids for the roof repairs for the portions that were not replaced during the Village Hall renovation project. Motion by Tuffree, seconded by Knox to accept the bid from Anderson Roofing for $55,000.00. Motion carried.

Dave Fuller Retirement. Todd explained that the DNR is allowing the Village to operate under Dave Fullers certification while Todd and Mike Ceslock obtain their certifications. Motion

by Knox, seconded by Boyce to accept the retirement letter from David Fuller effective January 16, 2020. Motion carried.

Contract with the Town of Plymouth for Sanitary Sewer. Todd explained that the 90 days is up at the end of October. Todd further explained that he has returned the town chairs phone call and has not heard back. Todd has attempted to call him multiple times and has not heard back. Todd further explained that the certification status has changed since the contract was approved and that we no longer have an employee certified for ponds. Todd advised the board the DNR does have certified operators to offer in hardship situations. Motion by Tuffree, seconded by Schmidt to enforce the termination of the contract based on the 90th day of when the certified letter was received. Motion carried.

Local Road Improvement Program 2020-2026. Todd explained that the Village needs to select a small street project for the LRIP 50% matching grant for the 2020-2026 cycle. The LRIP grant application is due September 30, 2019. Todd received estimates from the Village engineer for the following street repairs: resurface Olson Drive $192,000.00, resurface Gifford Street $178,000.00, total reconstruction of S. Richards Street $400,000.00, curb repair and resurface N. Center Street $100,000.00, and curb repair, manhole adjustment, resurface and stripe N. Maple Street $40,000.00.

Motion by Schmidt, seconded by Tuffree to select N. Maple Street as the LRIP project for funding. Motion carried. Todd explained that he will be applying for a 90/10 matching DOT

MARVEL AND TERRANCE THOMPSON

Terrance and Marvel Thompson celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary Janesville residents, Marvel and Terrance Thompson, will be celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary on the Third of October. Terry graduated Janesville high school in 1957 and Marvel is a 1957 graduate of Brodhead high school. They met in the spring of 1958 at Bluff View Park dance hall near Brodhead and courted on weekends while Terry was attending US Navy electronics school at Great Lakes, Illinois.

They were married in Oct. 1959 during a small ceremony at St.Paul’s Lutheran Church in Janesville. The Rev. Martin Droegemueller officiated.

In attendance were the bride and grooms parents and the grooms grandparents. The groom’s brother Bruce served as best man and Shirley (Schultz) Sutherland was the bride’s maid.

A reception for friends and relatives was held at the Avon Grange Hall the following day after which the newlyweds departed for Providence, Rhode Island where Terry was stationed aboard ship in the US Navy.

While enroute they took time for a honeymoon at Niagara Falls.

During Terry’s 21 years of active duty in the Navy they resided in Rhode Island, Virginia, Georgia, Florida (three times), California (twice), Illinois and Puerto Rico. Marvel served in the role of a navy wife for twenty years having primary responsibility for raising their two children whenever Terry was at sea. They have a son Terry Lee, who now resides with his family in Milwaukee, and a daughter Pamela Webb who lives with her family in Lenexa, Kansas. They have six grand-children and one great-grand child.

Terry retired from the Navy in 1978 and was employed by Marquette Medical Systems in Milwaukee until 1999 when he and Marvel retired to Janesville. Both attribute the length of their marriage to being married in a church and then taking God home with them as a permanent guest.

Obituaries

RONALD LANNING Ronald Lanning, 86, formerly of Brodhead, Wisconsin, died Tuesday, September 17, 2019 at Grancare Nursing and Rehab Center in Fond du Lac. A memorial service will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Fond du Lac on Saturday, September 28, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. Visitation is at 1:00 p.m.

Ron was born March 3, 1933 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin to Ronald Sr. and Vivian Lanning. He graduated from Campbellsport High School in 1951. Ron and his high school sweetheart, Mary Boccotti, were married in Fond du Lac on July 11, 1953. A few years later they moved to Brodhead, where they raised their 4 children. Ronald was employed

by UPS until his retirement in 1991.

As one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, one of his great joys was to share his faith with others. Ron always made himself available to help out fellow members of his congregation by providing both spiritual and practical assistance. Many of his friends recall him coming over to mow their lawn when they were unable. Ron and his wife, Mary, were known for their generous and hospitable spirit. Ron was known by the nickname “Jiggs” to all of his friends and family. It was a nickname given to him by his dad when he was a little boy because whenever music was playing, he just couldn’t help but jig around. The nickname stuck.

He was an avid gardener and had a passion for aviation. He also loved to sing and whistle, and had a wonderful sense of humor that will be missed.

Ron was preceded in death by Mary, his wife of 59 years, his daughter Lynette Sass, and brothers

Jack and David Lanning. He is survived by his children, Victoria (David) Olson of Fond du Lac, Steven Lanning of Charleston, SC, and Daria (Jon) Golz of Brodhead, his sisters Helen Gottfried and Debbie Kaplan, his brothers Richard (Pat) Lanning, Eugene (Rita) Lanning, and Harvey Lanning, 7 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.

JAMES MESSEL James Messel, age 74, died on Sept. 21, 2019 while at the Mercy Hospital in Janesville.

James was born on Jan. 11, 1945 in Chicago, IL, the son of Walter and Helen (Koblick) Messel.

James enjoyed hunting and fishing and loved animals. He was a member of the Brodhead American Legion and James served his country in the US Navy during the Cuban Missile Crisis and was very proud of his service time. Before retirement, James worked in the bakery at Swiss Colony and as a bar tender at the Bluffview. For a few years, he worked construction in Texas and also farmed with his brother, Bud. James is survived by his significant other of over 30 years, Kathy; two daughters, Barbara Messel and Gail Lewis; one grandson, Doug Lewis; two siblings, Bob Messel and Judy (Joe) Dietz.
