Five place first for Albany wrestling On Jan. 27, Parkview/Albany wrestling had split up and went in two directions. Four wrestlers at the boys’ invite – Slater Valley at 113, Danny Finley at 126, Sam Schwengels at 190, and Wes Egan at 215 – all placed first at the Bruce Tourbier Memorial Scramble in Laconia High School. Parkview/ Albany took 10 wrestlers to Laconia for a final tournament before the conference invite next week and then the start of the WIAA State Tournament Series on Feb. 10. With 8 scoring wrestlers, Parkview/Albany finished fourth as a team.

Sydney Coyne, at 235, was the only Parkview/ Albany wrestler to go to the Lady Huskies invite at the Ronald Reagan High school in Milwaukee and placed first individually and as a team placed ninth.

Group displays Nazi imagery on UW-W campus

With students returning to campus for classes early last week, a small group of people projected Nazi imagery onto the side of a residence hall at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater around dusk on Jan. 21.

The incident, widely reported in the media, was apparently the work of four people who projected the image of a swastika and anti-Semitic phrases outside Knilans Residence Hall. The group chanted racist phrases and apparently lit flares. They were recorded on video surveillance.

The actions appear to be consistent with members of the “Blood Tribe,” a group that has been active in the state over the last several months.

Police responded to the incident, but the group had already left the area.

According to an email from UW-Whitewater Chancellor Corey A. King, no further sightings were reported and there was no reason to believe there was a safety threat on campus.

“The actions of the individuals are consistent with a group that has been visiting other campuses, and has no affiliation with UW-Whitewater whatsoever,” King wrote following the incident. “In an abidance of caution, we have increased police patrol on campus.”

King went on to say the actions were “abhorrent” and go against the values of the school.

The American Red Cross continues to experience an emergency blood shortage as severe winter weather has further impacted the ability to rebuild the blood supply. Blood and platelet donors are urged to give now to help ensure lifesaving medical procedures are not delayed.

The national blood supply remains at critically low levels. Blood drives have been canceled in nearly every state where the Red Cross collects blood. As a result, nearly 15,000 blood and platelet donations have gone uncollected this month alone. The U.S. Small Business Administration recently announced that the SBA delivered $50 billion in capital, disaster relief, and bonding to small businesses and disaster-impacted communities across the U.S. in Fiscal Year 2023. More than $658.6 million of those dollars helped Badger State small businesses start and grow via 1233 SBA-backed loans.

“SBA-supported lending contributes vital capital to Wisconsin’s small businesses with longer terms and other benefits,” says SBA Wisconsin’s District Director Eric Ness.

“With more than 457,000 small businesses in Wisconsin and more than 170 SBA-approved lenders, there’s capacity for growth as businesses become ready for it. During Mentor Month in January, I’d also like to mention SBA’s extensive network of partners who can advise entrepreneurs as they prepare to take on financing and successfully manage it.”

Wisconsin FY23 SBA Lending by the Numbers • SBA 7(a) loans: 964 loans/$482.1 million • SBA 504 loans: 183 loans/$174.9 million • SBA microloans: 86 loans/$1.7 million The SBA’s flagship 7(a) program in Wisconsin approved a slightly higher number of loans (964) for a slightly lower dollar amount ($482.1 million) compared to FY22’s 958 loans totaling $500 million. After a banner year for 504 loans in FY22 due in part to low fixed interest rates and refinances, there was a significant decline from 387 loans in FY22 to 183 in FY23 and a decline of $113 million from the FY22 figure of $287 million as interest rates increased.

The number of micro-loans

made by the six SBA micro-loan intermediaries operating in Wisconsin increased over FY22, with 86 loans made for $1.7 million compared to 74 loans for $1.5 million last year.

Of the total loan portfolio volume, 37.3%, or more than $31.3 million, consisted of loans $150,000 or less.

In FY22, 33% of loans, or more than $29.5 million, were $150,000 or less. Startup businesses made up 40% of the portfolio in FY23, compared to 36% in FY22.

According to the new tradition, if the penguin sees its shadow, six more weeks of winter are to be expected. If the penguin doesn’t see his shadow, the state can look

Humboldt penguins live along the shores of Peru and Chile in South America.

Named for a chilly water current that flows through their coastal range, these birds are excellent swimmers. Their torpedo-shaped bodies can propel through the water at speeds of 30 miles an hour.

Meatsmith Co-op: A local solution for small meat producers At the time I started raising sheep I was a vegetarian. I soon realized that when you start to breed sheep there will be excess males who will be meat for someone. So I went back to eating meat and kept my own butchered lambs. Eventually I started selling at the smaller farmers markets and from the farm. In recent years I have had between six and twelve breeding ewes with 9 to 18 lambs.

In the last few years I have found it challenging to schedule butcher dates. For me onsite slaughter is essential since it is less stressful for both the animals and the farmer than trucking them live to the butcher site. Of the butchers who offer on-site slaughter, there are only one or two who provide state-inspected slaughters.

I can’t sell individual cuts of meat at the farm or at farmers markets if it isn’t inspected.

Also without that inspection, I can only sell half or whole lambs to the customer and then the customer must deal directly with the butcher for processing instructions and fees. Most of my customers don’t want to do that.

Butchers who offer inspected on site slaughter are scheduling over one year out which means before my sheep are even bred and sometimes even before I have a ram on site I need to have the butcher date scheduled. Since I am raising grass-fed, grass finished lamb I want to maximize the time they are on pasture and minimize the amount of hay I feed them.

Also, the nutritional values change after they are no longer eating fresh grass. For me the ideal time to schedule a butcher date is November or early December. Most meat processors keep November open for deer processing.

Lady Comets bounce back from first regular season losses in nearly three years

Because of the death of the Milwaukee County Zoo’s groundhog last year, the zoo has announced that this year their Humboldt penguins, seen here in January 2024, will be taking over the annual duties for the Groundhog Day weather prediction.

On Friday, Feb. 2, the Milwaukee County Zoo’s Humboldt penguins will be taking over the duties for the annual Groundhog Day weather prediction.

The zoo’s most recent groundhog, Gordy, passed away in 2023; the zoo’s animal care staff is in the process of acquiring another groundhog to add to the population.

Besides processing animals for farmers, butcher shops also bring in meat from elsewhere to butcher and sell in their own stores. This meat is not necessarily local meat but it can provide a large part of their income. In this situation the small farmer may have a lower priority from an income to hassle ratio. This lower priority could be why mistakes are common in their processing orders. I’m fortunate that I haven’t had cutting errors – where cuts of meat don’t match what was ordered – as many of my friends have. The errors on my orders have been mistakes on labeling which is still problematic.

So when I heard of a butcher co-operative forming to serve local small farmers I was all in. I wouldn’t be competing with hunters for scheduling times. I wouldn’t be vying for processing time with the butcher shop’s own production.

Meatsmith Co-op is a producer- and worker-owned co-op serving farmers, butchers, and consumers in a six county area: Rock, Lafayette, Green, Iowa, Dane, and Grant.

The Meatsmith Co-op will work with members to offer more tailored products, such as member-developed sausage recipes. When you raise grass-fed, grass finished meat it doesn’t make sense to be selling it in products made with preservatives, corn syrup, and MSG. T he cooperative will offer more options in ingredients

and specialty products. This isn’t an option most processors offer. It’s a premium product we can then offer to local markets. This meat is locally raised and will be processed locally for local consumers who want to know their farmers. Meats that come from an inspected slaughter can be sold from the farm and at farmers markets, as well as at local grocery stores and restaurants.

The on-site slaughter is one of the key offerings of the coop with an eye on supporting the humane treatment of animals as well as sustainable farming practices. Initially the slaughters may not be inspected but the plan is to add an inspection that could allow for sales across state lines.

The butcher I have used for years has done a good job for me. My main issues are with scheduling, the labeling errors and the distance to their facility. The fact is we need more butchers! I am so looking forward to the start of operations of Meatsmith Cooperative.

RCSO: Final ATV Safety Education Course for 2024 The Rock County Sheriff’s Office has announced they will offer their second and final 2024 ATV Safety Education Course on Tuesday, Feb. 6, and Saturday, Feb. 17, at the Rock County Fairgrounds in Janesville. Students will need to attend both sessions to graduate.

Anyone born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, is required to complete an ATV Safety Education Course in order to legally operate an ATV or UTV in areas open to the public within the State of Wisconsin.

It is recommended that partic-

ipants are at least 12 years of age or turn 12 shortly after the class.

Finley, Egan finish first at Cheesemaker Invite On Saturday, Jan. 20, Parkview/Albany had the girls and varsity reserve heading north to Wausau for the girls invite and the boys Wisconsin Challenge, and the varsity boys went to Monroe for the Cheesemaker Invite.

At Monroe, Parkview/Albany placed ninth out of 15 teams.

This was the first year Monroe has expanded the teams from eight teams. Danny Finley at 126 and Wes Egan at 215 finished on top of the podium. At 190, Sam Schwengels placed

Mayor Troy Nyman and aldermen Timothy Schadewaldt, Robert Moon and Casey Jones filed notice of non-candidacy papers with the clerk’s office.

Jones is seeking the mayoral seat, leaving the three incumbent aldermanic seats up for grabs by write-in candidates, according to the city clerk.

“At this point in time we are open to registered writeins,” City Clerk Nikolai Wahl said Friday, after the filing deadline.

This isn’t the first time the city relied on multiple writein candidates to fill the Council, according to the clerk. In the 2021 spring election, only one candidate filed nomination papers for three open seats, leaving two spots to be filled by write-ins.

High school robotics team advances to Wisconsin State Championship after winning Inspire Award Turtle TEK, a second year locally-based FIRST Tech Challenge robotics team, was recently selected as one of 25 teams to advance to the Wisconsin State Championship, which will be held on Saturday, March 2, at the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE).

Turtle TEK is a second-year team composed of eight middle and high school students from the stateline area. The team consists of Jordan Shultz and Xavier Miller from Beloit Memorial High School; and Isaac Kubatzke, Loretta Woodard, Katherine Woodard, Noah Hahn, Kelby Schneider, and Garrett Schneider, all of whom are homeschooled students.

Students come from Beloit and Clinton in Wisconsin, and Poplar Grove and Winnebago in Illinois.

Turtle TEK recently competed at their first event of the season. The Neo-Titian qualifier was held at Brookfield East High School on Jan. 14.

The team finished the robot game as the fourth-ranked alliance captain, selecting Screws Loose, a rookie team from Golda Meir School in Milwaukee, as their partner. The teams were eliminated from play by the winning alliance. In judged awards, Turtle TEK won the second place Connect Award.

The team that wins the Connect Award actively seeks and recruits engineers and explores the opportunities available in the world of engineering, science, and technology.

The team was incredibly honored to be awarded the first place Inspire Award. The Inspire Award is given to the team that best embodies the “challenge” of the FIRST Tech

Challenge program and is the highest award a team can earn.

The team that receives this award is a strong ambassador for FIRST programs and a role model FIRST team. They are a top contender for many other judged awards and are a gracious competitor. Only nine teams in Wisconsin will be awarded this prestigious award this season, and Turtle TEK is excited to have done so as only a second year team. Because they won the Inspire Award, they earned a bid to the Wisconsin State Championship for the second year in a row.

FIRST Tech Challenge students learn to think like engineers. Teams design, build, and program robots to compete in an alliance format against other teams. Robots are powered

by Android technology and students code using Java-based programming. By participating in FIRST, students gain confidence to explore the innovation process while learning valuable science, engineering, technology, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. Participants and alumni of FIRST programs gain access to education and career discovery opportunities, connections to exclusive scholarships and employers, and a place in the FIRST community for life.

Turtle TEK is sponsored by Hendrick’s CareerTek, Wisconsin DPI Robotics Grant, The Morse Group, NOHR, Shorewest Realtors, Gene Haas Foundation, Fairbanks Morse Defense, and MSOE.
