Boy Scout Chili Supper set for Feb. 2 Boy Scout Troop 108 is hosting their 3rd Annual Chili Supper Fundraiser on Saturday, Feb. 2 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Brodhead United Methodist Church in Brodhead.

This is the largest fundraiser Troop 108 holds all year. The proceeds from the event are being used to help offset the cost for the Boy Scouts to attend the High Adventure Trip to Isle Royale National Park in Michigan. The trip is scheduled for August 2020.

Troop 108 currently has over 30 boys participating in the program.

The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral decisions over their lifetimes.

Scout programs work to provide programs of character building, citizenship training, and personal fitness by instilling values and ideals that prepare young people to make lifelong ethical choices.

The programs also administers after-school and weekend programs, as well as prepares youth to successfully handle the complexities of today’s society and to enhance their self-confidence, motivation, and self-worth.

The Chili Supper includes all you can eat chili, baked potato, hot dogs, corn bread, desserts and beverages.

Come out and support the local Boy Scout troop in an amazing opportunity and eat some great food while doing it. Tickets for the event are available from any Brodhead Boy Scout or at the church office.

Wisconsin‘s digital library surpasses 5 million Ebook and Audiobook checkouts in 2018 #2 public library system worldwide in total digital circulation Rakuten OverDrive announced that Wisconsin’s Digital Library reached a record-breaking 5 million digital book checkouts in 2018.

The library is provided by the Wisconsin Public Library Consortium, a partnership of all 16 of the state’s library systems. This accomplishment illustrates the continued growth and importance of library digital lending of eBooks and audiobooks. Wisconsin’s Digital Library ranked first in circulation among all US OverDrive-based collections and second worldwide (complete list here).

The 450 Wisconsin public library members have been providing read-

Students receive Chancellor’s Award for fall term The following students from the area have received the University of Wisconsin-Stout Chancellor’s Award for the fall 2018 semester.

The award is presented to students who have a grade point average of 3.5 or above.

The Rock County Land Conservation Department is taking orders for its yearly Tree and Shrub Sale.

Distribution is usually around midApril.

Trees and shrubs are bare root seedlings in single species units of 10 for $20, bundles of 25 for $27.50, or 50 for $50 plus tax. Order early for best selection as some species are already sold out.

Remaining stock includes American plum, Sargent Crabapple, Black Walnut, Canaan Fir, Cook’s Balsam Fir, Pin Oak, Red Oak, White Oak, and White Pine. Tree protectors and Root Dip Planting Gel are also available.

Cold weather safety tips for your pet ASPCA

Exposure to winter’s dry, cold air and chilly rain, sleet and snow can cause chapped paws and itchy, flaking skin, but these aren’t the only discomforts pets can suffer. Winter walks can become downright dangerous if chemicals from ice-melting agents are licked off of bare paws. To help prevent cold weather dangers from affecting your pet’s health, please heed the following advice from our experts: -Repeatedly coming out of the cold into the dry heat of your home can cause itchy, flaking skin. Keep your home humidified and towel dry your pet as soon as he comes inside, paying special attention to his feet and in-between the toes. Remove any snowballs from between his footpads.

-Never shave your dog down to the skin in winter, as a longer coat will provide more warmth. If your dog is longhaired, simply trim him to minimize the clinging ice balls, salt crystals and de-icing chemicals that can dry his skin, and don’t neglect the hair between his toes. If

your dog is shorthaired, consider getting him a coat or sweater with a high collar or turtleneck with coverage from the base of the tail to the belly. For many dogs, this is regulation winter wear.

-Bring a towel on long walks to clean off stinging, irritated paws.

After each walk, wash and dry your pet’s feet and stomach to remove ice, salt and chemicals—and check for cracks in paw pads or redness between the toes.

-Bathe your pets as little as possible during cold spells. Washing too often can remove essential oils and increase the chance of developing dry, flaky skin. If your pooch must be bathed, ask your vet to recommend a moisturizing shampoo and/ or rinse.

-Massaging petroleum jelly or other paw protectants into paw pads before going outside can help protect from salt and chemical agents.

-Booties provide even more coverage and can also prevent sand and salt from getting lodged between bare toes and causing irritation. Use pet-friendly ice melts whenever

possible.

-Like coolant, antifreeze is a lethal poison for dogs and cats. Be sure to thoroughly clean up any spills from your vehicle, and consider using products that contain propylene glycol rather than ethylene glycol.

-Pets burn extra energy by trying to stay warm in wintertime. Feeding your pet a little bit more during the cold weather months can provide much-needed calories, and making sure she has plenty of water to drink will help keep her well-hydrated and her skin less dry.

-Make sure your companion animal has a warm place to sleep, off the floor and away from all drafts.

A cozy dog or cat bed with a warm blanket or pillow is perfect.

-Remember, if it’s too cold for you, it’s probably too cold for your pet, so keep your animals inside. If left outdoors, pets can freeze, become disoriented, lost, stolen, injured or killed. In addition, don’t leave pets alone in a car during cold weather, as cars can act as refrigerators that hold in the cold and cause animals to freeze to death.

Fury celebrates Senior Night Fury seniors Cammi Ganshert (Monroe) and Ella Silha (Milton) were honored at the game vs. Onalaska Hilltoppers on January 26 for Senior Night. Cammi played all four years of high school with the Fury and prior to that played on Monroe Youth Hockey’s Avalanche teams since she was an Atom. Ella has played with the Fury for three years.

The Onalaska game while non-conference is a possible prelude to sectionals. Alyssa Knauf opened game scoring on passes from defensemen Abby Humphrey and Sam Wells. Three minutes later Anika Einbeck lit the lamp for

the Fury. Onalaska responded with four unanswered goals.

With nine seconds remaining of the second period, Alyssa Knauf brought the Fury within one goal of Onalaska. Haley Knauf and Abby Humphrey made great passes on the play to earn assists on the power play goal. With 1:40 remaining in the third period, the Fury put an extra skater on the ice. Unfortunately, Onalaska scored on the empty net winning 5-3. The Fury outshot Onalaska 45-37.

The Fury take on Cap City Cougars on January 31. The Fury currently sits in the #1 spot in conference play and the Cougars #2.

A community meeting was held at the school on Jan. 9 to reveal the new plan for an Apr. 2 Albany School referendum.

The school is calling the referendum “tax neutral”. The plan consists of roof repairs, as well as an addition to the school in the parking lot between the gymnasium doors and cafeteria doors. The addition will be 5,000 square feet, and will house the new district office as well as two or three new bathrooms.

The bathrooms will be unisex, handicap accessible, and will address any transgender bathroom issues in the school.

The new addition will provide a large common area. This area could be used for study halls, school dances, and an area for students to “hang out” during their free time.

There was discussion of also having Ping-Pong or a pool table there.

The common area will serve as the new community center - providing supervision for children outside of school hours.

The total cost of the new referendum will be $2.75 million. It will be paid off in eight years because there are plans for another referendum in 5 to 8 years to replace more roofing, and potentially tear down the existing community center.

The school has had referendums in 1995, 2003, 2005, 2009, 2012, and 2016. The 2016 recurring referendum increases the tax levy by $200,000 every year. The $2M 2009 referendum included the construction of the gym and cafeteria entrances. That referendum will be paid off this year – allowing taxes to go down. The school now wants to re-spend that money by tearing down the entrances built in 2010, and building the new addition.

The school is calling the referendum “tax neutral”, because it won’t “increase” taxes. This is very misleading – giving the impression it won’t affect taxes. If the referendum is voted down, the school reports that taxes will decrease $1.62 per $1,000 due to the 2009 referendum being paid off. Passing this referendum will cost every homeowner in the district hundreds of dollars each year. Don’t be fooled by “tax neutral” – this referendum absolutely increases taxes.

The school said the 2016 referen-

dum was critical to keep the school open. In 2016 they said that while taxes would increase, the increase was temporary, and taxes would still decrease $2.12 per $1,000 in 2019, when the 2009 referendum was paid off (they are now using a value of $1.62). The information sheet distributed in 2016 stated that if the 2016 referendum passed, there would be “NO new referendum in 2019-20!” The 2016 referendum passed on that promise. The school has now broken that promise. The document with the 2016 information was removed from the school website last spring after I brought it to their attention.

Along with the current and future referendums, the school is planning many other remodeling projects within the building – financed with the annual budgetary surplus.

The school reported surpluses of $235,000 and $170,000 in the last two years. The surplus is available due to the $200,000 recurring referendum for operating expenses passed in 2016. If the referendum fails, this surplus money could be used for roof repairs.

The school recently publicized their DPI scorecard and test score

improvements this year. While scores did increase, the data publicized does not tell the whole story.

Of 422 school districts in the state, Albany ranked 6th, 5th, and now 33rd from the bottom over the last three years. The school performs in the bottom 8% of all of the districts in the state. By comparison, every neighboring district has a state ranking 169-333 places higher than Albany.

Open enrollment continues to be an issue. Last school year, 108 students enrolled out of the district. That is approximately 1/4 of all students that live in the Albany district. Each student that leaves costs Albany $7,055 in state funding ($12,207 for students with special needs) – hundreds of thousands of dollars per year. School performance, open enrollment, taxes, and referendums are all related.

I will be providing more information before the referendum election regarding taxes in the Albany School District. If you think your property taxes are high, you are correct – they are some of the highest in the state.

Dairy risk management program Feb. 7 Market volatility has been and continues to be a common theme is the dairy sector. With the recent adoption of the 2018 USDA Farm Bill, there is an opportunity to utilize various new tool, including the new Dairy Margin Coverage program, to assist farmers in dairy risk management.

Marketing Brief: Dairy Risk Management Program will provide answers to new programs, expected returns, and decision making tools to make better, informed decisions.

Marketing Brief: Dairy Risk Management Program is set for Thursday, February 7, 2019, at The Blue Door Coffee Co, 116 E. Main Street, Campbellsport. The brief will begin promptly at 1 p.m. and concluding at 3 p.m.

UW-Extension Dairy Policy Specialist & UW-Center for Dairy Profitability Mark Stephenson will be the guest speaker. He will provide a comprehensive overview of the Dairy Revenue Protection program and updates to the FSA Dairy Margin Protection Program (MPP), as another tool for dairy farmers when milk prices are low. Important changes to the MPP have been introduced in the Farm Bill that may make this program worth a second look. Dairy farmers, financial consultants, and anyone interested in the new Farm Bill should attend.

Sunday, Jan. 20 Operate While Under the Influence (Alcohol) At approximately 8:10 p.m., Deputies stopped Brandon J. McCarten, 49, Monroe in the N3400 block of State Highway 81, Town of Monroe.

Investigation resulted in McCarten being arrested for Operating While Under the Influence, 1st Offense, alcohol related. He was also cited for Operating With a Prohibited Alcohol Concentration 1st Offense, and was released to a responsible party pending court.

Monday, Jan. 21 Traffic Crash At approximately 8:06 p.m., Deputies responded to the N9200 block of Old Madison Road, in the Town of New Glarus, for a motor vehicle crash with reported injuries.

Investigation revealed that Tiara L. Owen, 16, of New Glarus, was southbound on Old Madison Road when she lost control of her vehicle, due to a snow-covered roadway.

The vehicle then left the roadway and entered the ditch. The vehicle then traveled over a driveway and struck a fire number sign, before coming to rest in the ditch.

Tiara reported wearing her seat belt and sustaining injuries in the crash. Tiara declined medical attention. The vehicle sustained moderate damage and front air bag deployment. The owner then handled vehicle removal. Tiara was cited for failure to maintain control and released.

Tuesday, Jan. 22 Motor Vehicle Crash Property Damage At approximately 11:52 a.m., Deputies investigated a single vehicle crash that occurred in the 700 block of Vine Street, Village of Albany.

Investigation revealed that Courtney J Jackson, 22, Monroe, was eastbound on State Highway 59, when she attempted to turn onto Vine Street, and lost control of her vehicle due to icy road conditions.

Jackson’s vehicle exited the roadway and struck a sign.

Jackson reported wearing her seatbelt and no injuries. The vehicle did not sustain any damage or airbag deployment and was driven from the scene.

Motor Vehicle Crash Property Damage At approximately 1:39 p.m., Deputies responded to a single vehicle crash in the W6100 block of Meadow Valley Road, Town of New Glarus.

Investigation revealed that Megan M Bellefeuille, 17, New Glarus, was westbound on Meadow Valley Road, when she lost control of her vehicle due to icy road conditions.

Bellefeuille’s vehicle exited the roadway, where it knocked down trees before coming to rest.

Bellefeuille reported wearing her seatbelt and no injuries. The vehicle sustained moderate damage and no airbag deployment. It was later towed from the scene.

Motor Vehicle Crash Personal Injury At approximately 4:35 p.m., Deputies responded to a two vehicle crash in the N3400 block of State Highway 104, Town of Decatur.

Investigation revealed that Dee Ann K Hegi, 54, Brodhead, was southbound on State Hwy 104 when she stopped in the roadway. Jason E Bussey, 42, Brodhead, was following Hegi and was unable to stop before colliding with her vehicle.

Hegi reported injuries but denied EMS. Bussey reported no injuries.

Both reported wearing their seatbelts and no airbag deployment.

Both vehicles were driven from the scene.

Wednesday, Jan. 23 Motor Vehicle Crash At approximately 2:11 p.m., Deputies responded to a report of a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Ullom Road and Franklin Road in the Town of Cadiz.

Investigation revealed that a delivery truck, driven by Tyler A. Wainwright, 28, Dodgeville, WI, was traveling southbound on Ullom Rd and stopped at the Stop Sign at the intersection with Franklin Road.

Wainwright then continued through the intersection. Wainwright’s delivery truck then collided with a plow truck that was plowing snow in the intersection. The plow truck was driven by Ernest M. Allen, 66, Browntown.

Wainwright reported that he was not injured and that he was wearing his seat belt. The delivery truck sustained damage and the airbags did not deploy. The delivery truck was driven from the scene. Allen reported that he was not injured and that he was wearing his seatbelt. The plow truck sustained damage and the airbags did not deploy. The plow truck was driven from the scene.

Motor Vehicle Crash At approximately 9:11 p.m., Deputies responded to the 700 block of 5th Avenue in the Village of New Glarus for a report of a single vehicle crash.

Investigation revealed that Kaitlyn M. Kendall, 23, New Glarus, was traveling eastbound on 5th Avenue when her vehicle entered the north ditch. The vehicle then collided with a guide wire. Kendall reported that she was not injured and that she was wearing her seat belt.

A passenger in the vehicle reported that they were not injured and that they were wearing their seatbelt.

The vehicle sustained damage and the airbags did not deploy. The vehicle was towed from the scene.

Friday, Jan. 25 Motor Vehicle Crash At approximately 11:12 a.m., Deputies responded to the W7700 block of County Highway C in the Town of Adams for a reported of a single vehicle crash. Investigation revealed that Riley A. Whitney, 32, Juda, was operating a plow truck eastbound on County Highway C when the plow truck entered the ditch.

The plow truck then rolled onto its side and came to a rest. Whitney reported that he was not injured and that he was wearing his seatbelt. The plow truck sustained damage and the airbags did not deploy.

The plow truck was towed from the scene.

Motor Vehicle Crash At approximately 2:48 p.m., Deputies responded to the N1200 block of County Highway K in the Town of Jefferson for a report of a single vehicle crash.

Investigation revealed that a vehicle being operated by Jordan J. P. Pizzaolato, 21, Freeport, Ill., was traveling northbound when Pizzaolato’s vehicle lost traction due to the snow covered roadway.

The vehicle then crossed the centerline and entered the ditch where it collided with an embankment.

Pizzaolato reported that he was not injured and that he was wearing his seatbelt. The vehicle sustained damage and the airbags did not deploy. The vehicle was towed from the scene.

Motor Vehicle Crash At approximately 2:59 p.m., Deputies responded to the W4000 block of Town Center Road in the Town of Jefferson for a report of a single vehicle crash.

Investigation revealed that a vehicle being operated by Robert A. Lee, 32, Monroe, was traveling westbound when Lee lost control of the vehicle due to the snow-covered roadway. The vehicle overturned one time and came to a rest on the driver side.

Lee reported that he was not injured and that he was wearing his

seatbelt.

The vehicle sustained damage and the airbags did not deploy. The vehicle was towed from the scene.

Motor Vehicle Crash At approximately 9:19 p.m., Deputies responded to the N500 block of Shueyville Road in the Town of Clarno for a report of a single vehicle crash.

Investigation revealed that a vehicle being operated by Charles A. Snider, 18, Monroe, was traveling northbound when Snider lost control of the vehicle and his vehicle left the roadway. The vehicle then struck a tree. Snider reported that he was wearing his seatbelt and that he was not injured. The vehicle sustained damage and the airbags did not deploy. The vehicle was towed from the scene.

Thursday, Jan. 24 Probation Arrest At approximately 3:23 p.m., Deputies responded to the Green County Probation and Parole Office in the City of Monroe and arrested Robyn N. Flannery, 35, Juda, on a Probation Hold that was placed on her by the Wisconsin Department of Corrections. Flannery was incarcerated in the Green County Jail.

Saturday, Jan. 26 Motor Vehicle Crash At approximately 1:44 a.m., Deputies located a single motor vehicle crash that had occurred in the W4400 block of Wittenwyler Road in the Town of Mt Pleasant.

Investigation revealed that Shawn M. Martinson, 22, Belleville, was traveling westbound when he lost control of the vehicle, which entered the south ditch. The vehicle then struck a fence and a power pole.

Martinson reported that he was wearing his seatbelt and that he was not injured. The vehicle sustained damage and the airbags did not deploy. The vehicle was towed from the scene.

Martinson was cited for Failure to Maintain Control of Vehicle.

OWI Arrest At approximately 3:21 a.m., the Brodhead Police Department received a report of a vehicle in the ditch in the W300 block of Decatur Road in the Town of Decatur.

Deputies, Brodhead EMS, and the Brodhead Police Department, responded to the scene. Investigation resulted in the driver of the vehicle, Alex W. Smith, 31, Brodhead, being arrested for Operating While under the Influence (alcohol) 2nd Offense.

Smith was released pending an initial court appearance.

The Brodhead Police Department assisted with the investigation.

OWI Arrest At approximately 9:29 p.m., Deputies conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the N4400 block of State Highway 104 in the Town of Decatur.

Investigation resulted in the driver, Kristen M. Diehl, 30, Mount Morris, Ill., being arrested for Operating while Under the Influence (alcohol) 1st Offense. Diehl was cited for Speeding. Diehl was released pending an initial court appearance.

Motor Vehicle Crash At approximately 11:13 p.m., Deputies responded to the intersection of Buckskin Road and Walnut Road in the Town of Washington for a report of a one-vehicle crash.

Investigation revealed that Brady N. Smith, 16, Browntown, was traveling eastbound on Buckskin Road when he failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway due to the snow covered road surface.

The vehicle then left the roadway and struck a traffic sign. The vehicle then came to a rest in the ditch.

Smith reported that he was not injured and that he was wearing his seatbelt. A juvenile passenger in the vehicle reported that they were wearing their seatbelt and that they were not injured. The vehicle sustained damage and the airbags did not deploy. The vehicle was towed from the scene.

Roth maps out upcoming county meetings, urges attendance The Finance and Accounting Committee will be meeting at the same time and with the Personnel and Labor Relations Committee on the evening of Wednesday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. in the County Board Room of the Historic

February healthful hint: heart disease can strike at any age

Green County website listing specific issues that will likely be discussed and possibly acted on. Comments and suggestions will be taken from the county department heads regarding the employee compensation plan. This is an open meeting and the public is welcome to attend.

Is your heart older than you are?

On average, 3 out of 4 U.S. adults have hearts that are older than their actual age, which increases risk for heart disease and stroke. High rates of obesity and high blood pressure among younger people are putting them at risk too for heart disease earlier in life.

The top three risk factors for heart disease are: high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol and smoking.

Half of all Americans have at least one of the top three risk factors. In addition, obesity, diabetes, physical inactivity and unhealthy eating patterns are contributing factors as well.

Heart disease can be managed and prevented.

Turn the tables on risk factors: •Obesity. Carrying extra weight puts stress on the heart. More than 1 in 3 Americans—and nearly 1 in 6 children ages 2 to 19—has obesity.

Try to lose those extra pounds.

•Diabetes is a disease in which your blood glucose, or blood sugar, levels are too high.

This can damage blood vessels and nerves that help control the heart muscle. Nearly 1 in 10 people in the United States has diabetes. Control diabetes with healthy eating, exercise and prescribed medication.

•Physical inactivity. Staying physically active helps keep the heart and blood vessels healthy. Only 1 in 5 adults meets the physical activity guidelines of getting 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity activity. Try breaking up 30 minutes into 10-minute blocks.

•Unhealthy eating patterns. Most Americans, including children, eat too much sodium (salt), which increases blood pressure. Replacing foods high in sodium with fresh fruits and vegetables can help lower blood pressure. But only 1 in 10 adults is

getting enough fruits and vegetables each day. Eat a diet low in trans-fat, saturated fat, and avoid added sugar.

Juda Girls fall to Barneveld

Last Thursday the Juda Lady Panthers hosted Barneveld for an inner conference matchup in the Six Rivers East.

The Panthers had a rough go early on as the offense struggled to find their shot in the first half.

Barneveld had their rhythm working early as they had a team effort all around which put them up 31-15 going into the break.

The second half was nearly all Montana Steinmann as she did everything she could to bring the Panthers back into this game.

Steinmann hit a trio of 3 pointers, as well as a number of shots below the basket as she worked her way towards 17 points in the second half. Paige Price added a pair of 3 pointers of her own following the break, as the Panthers managed to put up 28 points following the break.

Despite the offensive outbreak, it wouldn’t be enough for the Panthers to get back into this one as Barneveld continued their welloiled offense in the second half.

This time the Eagles put up 35 points as they extended their lead and went on to win 66-43.

BOYS BASKETBALL The boys’ home game against Pecatonica was canceled due to the weather. It will be made up on Thursday, Feb. 7. The boys play Argyle at home on Thursday, Jan. 31, and Cassville on Saturday, Feb. 2.

CHARACTER TRAIT OF THE MONTH Each month, Juda is honoring high school students who exhibit the Juda character trait of the month. This month’s character trait is self-discipline. Juda defines self-discipline as demonstrating hard work, showing initiative, and exhibiting self-control. Any teacher, student, or staff member can nominate a high school student for monthly recognition. For the month of January, any student who exhibits strength and discipline in any part of his/her life may be acknowledged. It does not have to be about academic success or academic discipline. Anyone with nominees may email Mrs. Bertling with a sentence explaining how the student displays discipline and why he/she deserves to be recognized.

NATIONAL ICE CREAM FOR BREAKFAST DAY In honor of National Ice Cream for Breakfast Day, the lunch ladies will be serving ice cream with breakfast on Friday, Feb. 1. Regular breakfast items will be served, but a buildyour-own-sundae bar will be available as well! If a student purchases a breakfast, he or she will be able to add a small ice cream sundae to his or her meal. The lunch ladies hope students will join them in celebrating National Ice Cream for Breakfast Day. FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENTS Our six foreign exchange students are having a good time at Juda School.

They participate in certain activities: many of them are doing basketball; some of them are in Spanish Club.

They also help the students to get to know their home countries. They introduced their countries and life back at home by presenting before the Christmas break in the gym, and they will be active in Language Week in March with Mrs. Bertling’s and Mrs. Williams’ help, as well.

ROLLER SKATING PARTY The Monroe Optimist Club is sponsoring a roller skating party on Tuesday, Feb. 5. The party will take place at the Monroe Roller Den, and the rink will be open from 6 to 8 p.m. All students are welcome to come. Come for a night of roller skating fun!

Did You Know Mint is a Staple in Wisconsin’s Ag Industry?

Wisconsin ranks No. 5 in the country for mint production Wisconsin is certainly known for its beer and cheese, its cranberry marshes and cherry orchards – but mint? Sullivan producer Tom Anfang says it still surprises his fellow Wisconsinites to learn that their state is a global leader in mint production.

According to the Wisconsin mint industry, the United States is responsible for more than 70 percent of the world’s supply of mint – and Wisconsin ranks fifth in the nation for production of mint oils. Most Midwestern mint oil goes to companies such as Colgate and Wrigley’s, which means when you chew gum or brush your teeth, there’s a very good chance you’ve tasted Wisconsin mint.

“I get that all the time. Ninety percent of them say, ‘Wow, mint, I never realized,’” says Anfang, who pulled his first weeds on a Delavan mint farm at the age of 12 and never stopped. Raised as one of 11 children on an 80-acre family farm, he bought his first 40 acres while he was still in high school. Although he’s dabbled throughout the years in sweet corn, peas, potatoes and beef cattle, the constant has always been mint. He now farms about 1,500 acres worth of the thirsty, aromatic perennial

across parcels from Janesville to Sullivan. “Mint was always different, that’s probably what I like about it,” he says. “And it brings a little diversity to Wisconsin’s agriculture.”

How Mint is grown Mint, specifically peppermint and spearmint, starts as a row crop but does not produce seeds. It’s propagated by the root and favors rich, wet muck – sometimes up to 65 percent organic material. While 90 percent of commercially grown mint is distilled to a concentrated oil used for confectionary and pharmaceutical flavoring – one drum of oil can be used to flavor 5 million sticks of chewing gum or 400,000 tubes of toothpaste – it is also a refreshing herb used in cooking and drinks, and believed to have digestive and antiviral properties.

With only about 80,000 acres cultivated in the U.S. each year, mint is still a small player in the grand agricultural scheme, but those who farm it, love it.

“More of my neighbors appreciate me when we’re harvesting mint,” laughs Richard Gumz, a fourth-generation mint farmer in central Wisconsin and one of only three 2017 Top Producer of the Year finalists in the nation, according to Top Producer magazine.

The Gumz family began growing mint in Wisconsin 70 years ago on land the government deemed too wet for farming or developing. Modern irrigation practices have since made more land amenable to mint. Mint also needs rotation every five or six

years to ward off a disease called verticillium wilt. Gumz Farms raises onions, red potatoes, carrots, corn and soybeans along with its 900 acres of peppermint and 300 acres of Scotch spearmint.

The Parkview Vikings traveled to Madison last Thursday for a Trailways - South Conference battle with the coop squad of Abundant Life St. Ambrose. The Vikings came in as one of the top teams in the conference at 5-1, sitting behind just Palmyra Eagle who holds a perfect 6-0-conference record. Abundant Life-St. Ambrose came in at the bottom with an 0-6 record. With the obvious advantage, Parkview would look to keep themselves in reach of the top spot, and extend their current win streak.

The Vikings got off to a hot start when the offense was clicking and their defense did a good job of keeping AL-SA off of the scoreboard.

Justin Balch and Eli Hoscheit combined for 17 first half points as they propelled the team towards a 27-16 lead heading into the break.

Balch continued to have the hot hand in the second half when he hit a pair of 3 pointers following the break, and hit a few jumpers to put himself at 12 for the half. Aydon Campbell found his rhythm coming out of the break when he got hot down low and put up 10 points in the second.

Abundant Life-St. Ambrose exploded in the second half when they hit six 3 pointers, but it wasn’t enough to bring them back into the game as the Vikings took home a 6347 victory.

The win gives the boys a 3 game win streak, as they currently sit at 8-4 overall after beginning the year 0-2.

Parkview Girls acquire blowout win

The Parkview girls have won their second straight with a dominant win last Monday when they hosted Pecatonica for an out of conference battle. The Lady Vikings came into Monday’s game with a 5-7 overall record, and a 5-2-conference record. So despite the out of conference losses, the Vikings still found themselves tied for second place in their conference, sitting just behind Palmyra Eagle.

The Vikings defense was the difference maker on Monday night when they held Pecatonica to just 6 points in the first half. Kristine Mumm helped Parkview get out to an early lead by dropping 7 first half points as the Vikings went into halftime up 17-6.

The Vikings offense really exploded in the second half and blew this game wide open. Alexys Olson and Taylor Burrell each had 9-second half points. Jenna Olin, who was

held scoreless in the first half, scored 8 of her own following the break.

The trio helped expand the Vikings lead and put this game out of reach.

The Parkview defense was equally impressive in the half when they held Pecatonica to limited scoring once again. After allowing just 6 first half points, the Vikings held them to 10 in the second, and ensured the teams 46-16 victory.

Burrell led the way with 13 while Olson was right behind with 12 of her own. Mumm finished the evening with 9, and Olin added 8 of her own.

The win put the Vikings at 6-7 but since then they secured another blowout victory over conference opponent Madison Country Day school, pushing their win streak to 3 and reaching .500 once again after holding a 4-7 record not long ago.

The win streak also puts the Vikings sole possession of the second place spot in the Trailways - South Conference at 6-2.

Take data privacy into your own hands

Digital privacy is one of the great challenges of our connected age, and it is important that we all take action to protect our information to the greatest extent that we can. While we cannot keep watch over all of our personal and financial data that is stored online, we can limit our oversharing and take steps to bolster the security around our accounts and devices.

In recognition of Data Privacy Day (1/28), the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection asks consumers to consider the scale of their “digital footprints” (their online presences and the information stored in their accounts). Do you have accounts that you no longer use? Close them. Do you make a habit of providing complete personal details during the sign-up phase for a new ac-

count? Stop offering more than is required.

The best way to take control of your information is to limit the amount that is stored around the Internet.

This Data Privacy Day, strengthen the security around your digital footprint: -Delete apps you no longer use. Having an abundance of unused, out-of-date apps can create vulnerabilities that could threaten your accounts and your devices.

-Purge the application permissions list in your social media accounts. Many people use their social media accounts to log into other services rather than creating usernames and passwords for those apps. These connections could give the third-party service the right to reuse information from your social account such as your name, birthdate, contacts and even your messag-

es. This could put your social accounts at risk if a linked service is compromised.

-Review the settings of each app to see which services it accesses in your device.

Some apps may use your device’s camera, seek your physical location (using information from GPS, cellular and WiFi networks or Bluetooth), or access your device’s mobile pay features. Turn off any connections you are uncomfortable with or delete the app altogether.

-Pay close attention to requests for data or device services that appears during the setup stage for a new app or online account. If you are uncomfortable with any of the data or services that the program will utilize, deny the request.

-Update passwords. Be sure they are long and strong, with a combination of at

least eight uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and special characters. Use different passwords for each online account.

-Update all web-enabled devices to the latest operating system and antivirus package in order to protect against the newest viruses and vulnerabilities.

-Remind friends and family members not to click on links in unsolicited emails or social media posts and to avoid completing unsolicited surveys that ask for personal details.

By Fabiana Franco, PHD Migraine headaches are one of the most common chronic conditions worldwide. Depending on the study, chronic migraines affect around 1 in 10 people, with twice as many sufferers being female.

Migraine headaches are disabling and cause significant loss of productivity and quality of life. Once they strike, a migraine can last anywhere between 4 and 72 hours. In addition to substantially reducing quality of life, frequent migraines can place one’s job at risk and prevent daily functioning.

Currently, the causes of migraine headaches are not well understood.

Genetics are thought to play a role as well as environmental effects and changes in the way the brain interacts with the trigeminal nerve, a pain pathway.

It is well understood that repeated exposure to stress and trauma during childhood often results in an impaired ability to regulate the stress response over one’s lifetime.

Childhood trauma affects the HPA axis. What this means is that over time, the HPA axis loses its ability to effectively control the stress response. During times of upset, the person has an intense reaction that lasts too long. The result is overexposure of the body and brain to high levels of the stress hormone, cortisol.

Migraines may be tied to the same neurochemical conditions associated with trauma, depression, and

anxiety, with an overactive stress response (de-regulation of the HPA axis) playing a role. An investigation into certain neurochemicals in migraine sufferers found abnormal patterns of hypothalamic hormonal secretion, a condition also associated with trauma and child abuse.

What Can We Do To Help?

A difficult childhood is not a life sentence of heightened stress and suffering. We can take steps to alter our response to stress. Exercise and meditation have been shown to help calm the mind and body. These activities can begin to reverse the damage caused by an overactive HPA axis. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is also an

effective tool for learning coping strategies and allows individuals to take greater control of reactions to daily life events that cause stress.

Research on migraines and childhood trauma is relatively new and is not well understood. Alice in Dairyland is one of the most widely recognized communications professionals in Wisconsin agriculture. Her job is to educate Wisconsin children and adults about the value, economic impact and future of the state’s $88 billion agricultural industry.

Alice in Dairyland works with television, radio and newspaper professionals to share information about Wisconsin agriculture. She gives public speeches, takes industry tours and makes many classroom presentations. She must be able to develop and execute marketing plans and develop professional relationships with industry professionals. Alice must be able to learn and retain information about the diversity of Wisconsin agriculture and be able to tailor that information delivery to diverse audiences.

Applicants should have considerable knowledge or work experience with Wisconsin agriculture; at least three years of experience, education or training in communications, marketing or public relations; public speaking experience and a willingness to attend an extensive number of work-related events on evenings and weekends. Applicants must be female, Wisconsin

residents and at least 21 years old.

This one-year, full-time contractual position starts June 3, 2019. The position holder will be headquartered in Madison and travel extensively throughout the state. The annual salary for Alice in Dairyland is $45,000 and includes holiday, vacation, and sick leave as well as use of a sponsor-provided vehicle for official business. Reimbursement is provided for an individual health insurance premium up to $450 a month, as well as professional travel expenses.

Age segregation has become the norm in America today. We divide up our communities and our activities by age – young people in schools, older people alone at home or in retirement communities or facilities, while young and middle-aged adults tend to cluster at offices and work sites. As a result of these age-restrictive environments, there is little interaction between generations. Even our neighborhoods are predominantly young or old.

In a recent Generations United & Eisner Foundation survey of adults nationwide, more than half the respondents (53 percent) said that aside from family members, they rarely spent time with people much older or younger than they are.

The survey, which was conducted online earlier this year with over 2000 U.S. adults, found that 93% of those surveyed felt children and youth could benefit from building relationships with elders in their communities. An almost equal number (91%) felt that elders could benefit from these multi-generational relationships as well. A large number of respondents (77%) wished there were more opportunities in their own communities for different age groups to meet and interact.

With the aging of America and baby boomers booming into their senior years, we are living longer than ever. Centenarians are the fastest growing segment of our population. In fact, never before in the history of the world have we had this many people live this long who are this well educated, who are this capable, and who have this much to offer. Many older adults today are better educated, healthier, and more able than elders of past generations, and clearly can be a tremendous resource.

Social scientists say that age segregation also gives rise to ageism (discrimination and misunderstanding about older and younger people) and that there is a missed opportunity for the young and old to serve one another and their communities. With their careers winding down and basic needs met, many seniors are looking to contribute to the public good. But too often, there’s no clear path for them to follow.

With the changing dynamic of the family structure and the economic realities (both parents working and/or single parent homes) parents are often stressed and strained and simply not available. As a result, many children and youth struggle both academically and emotionally, and could benefit from tutoring and mentoring—which elders could provide. Vice a versa, young people could also be mobilized to help elders, particularly those who are isolated and lonely.

The Health Benefits of Socialization While there are clearly societal and community benefits to intergenerational socialization, the physical and mental health benefits are also significant. There is mounting evidence that socialization can make your brain more resilient to the early signs of dementia, as well as slow the aging process and promote healthy longevity in our senior years. Research shows that people with more social support tend to live longer than those who are more isolated. Social engagement is also associated with a stronger immune system (a better defense against colds, flu, and other health risks) and it can also boost feelings of well being and decrease feelings of depression.

Scientists have now linked loneliness to depression, cognitive decline, high blood pressure and other ailments. People who connect with others generally perform better when tested for memory retention and cognitive skill. Active, involved older adults with close intergenerational connections consistently report being less depressed, better physical health, improved brain health and higher degrees of life satisfaction. They tend to be happier with their present life and more hopeful for the future.

In the survey, nearly half of the elders reported feeling occasional loneliness; 19 percent reported frequent loneliness.

Studies show that when isolated elders experience regular visits from young people, their loneliness seems to ease up and

their overall health seems invigorated. It can pull them out of isolation and loneliness, giving them a “purpose” in life again.

Children can also help older people, particularly those facing health challenges or other losses, see the world anew again, through a child’s eyes. At the same time, these younger visitors can benefit from the interaction in many ways as well.

Research shows children need four to six involved, caring adults in their lives to fully develop emotionally and socially. Older adult mentors can make a significant difference in a child’s life enhancing a child’s skill level as well as building self-esteem, confidence and emotional stability. One study showed that when an adult mentors a child, they are 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs, 27% less likely to begin using alcohol and 52% less likely to skip school.

While many factors influence a longer, healthier lifespan (diet, exercise, mental challenge), research continues to confirm that building social connections can improve mood and outlook on life. Socialization and intergenerational connections can make a big difference — not only for how long we live, but how well we live.

Promoting Healthy Longevity As we strive to become a world that values and engages all generations, intergenerational collaboration can be a catalyst in bringing single-age focused groups together and promoting healthier lives at all ages.

There can also be a more robust back-andforth reciprocity between all generations than exists today with elders supporting younger adults and children and younger adults and children supporting elders. And it’s starting to happen. Public and private sectors around the country are creating intergenerational programs, helping kids get the attention they need, and helping elders find purpose and connection.

The San Diego County government has declared age integration a core community value; a team of five “intergenerational coordinators” have spawned dozens of programs that mobilize elders on behalf of struggling kids. One involves a crew of about ten elders who live on the campus of San Pasqual Academy, a boarding school for foster teens. The “grandparents” pay below-market rent in return for their commitment to helping the kids. One senior is a painter and sculptor who collaborates with students on art projects and takes them to museums, plays and poetry slams off campus.

An organization in the New York City area called DOROT has over 7,000 volunteers — children, teens, and young adults – whom they mobilize to serve isolated elders. Volunteers visit with the same homebound elder every week; others deliver holiday packages, make birthday cards for them, and escort them to museums and movies.

Many of the youngest Americans attend daycare. So do many of the oldest. What if kids and elders who needed care during the day spent this time together rather than apart? They do at the St. Ann Center for Intergenerational Care in Milwaukee. Each of the center’s two campuses – one serving preschoolers and one serving frail or isolated elders – provide an intergenerational activity or class twice a day, as well as many opportunities for more casual interaction. One resident who has been disabled for more than a decade due to multiple sclerosis credits St. Ann’s with lifting her out of depression. Rather than spending time home alone, she’s now surrounded by friends of all ages, playing cards and games, taking walks. It makes her “want to get up in the morning.”

Even if seniors don’t have access to such programs, there are other ways to engage and promote socialization on an individual basis: use Skype or Facetime to connect with family and friends; walk through your neighborhood and make a point of stopping to say hello to people you meet; sign up for a class at the local recreation center, library, or college; volunteer at a favorite charity organization or participate in a neighborhood or community group.

Robert J. Oft Robert J. Oft (Bob) went to be with the Lord at 96 years of age on Thursday, January 18, 2019 in Loveland, Colorado. He was born on July 21, 1922 in Blue Island, Illinois to John and Anna (Liebich) Oft. He attended school in the Chicago area and earned a state award playing the drums.

Bob married Rose Marquess in 1942. He enlisted in the Navy during WWII on a sub chaser patrol craft.

After serving his country, he came home and went into farming until the year of 1957. Then he worked up to a market manager while with Jewel Companies, Inc. for thirty-five years.

In retirement, Bob was a semi-truck owner/operator for two years. After that, he became the vice president of

a construction company. He enjoyed music, dancing, hunting and fishing throughout his lifetime. Bob and Rose were married almost fifty years.

They had a loving marriage and were blessed with six children. Rose went to be with the Lord in the year of 1992.

Bob enjoyed going to the senior center activities where he met his second love, Zona Brown. They were married in 1998 for over twenty years. They enjoyed ballroom and polka dancing, cruises, and trips together. Bob won first place in the

2016 Greeley Senior Talent show and second place in 2017 playing his harmonica.

He is survived by his wife, Zona, his brother Raymond Oft and family, Bob’s children Donald Oft (Sharon), June Esser (Richard), Jane Niedermeier (Robert), Barbara, Linda James (Robert), Larry Oft (Marya) and stepdaughter, Sandie Erskine (Christopher).

Bob had 21 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, and 13 great, great grandchildren.

Private Christian service and burial will be held at a later date in Brodhead, Wisconsin.

Thorvald Olson Thorvald Olson, age 97, of Brodhead, WI, passed away on Saturday, January 26, 2019, at his home. He was born on November 4, 1921 in Freeborn, MN, the son of Thorvald and Helen (Norem) Olson. He married Pauline C. Nicholls on August 15, 1944 in Wildwood, NJ. Thorvald had been a seed corn salesman, a dairy farmer in the Albany, WI area and a barber. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, Seaman 2nd Class and was the ship’s barber, commissioned by the President of the United States. Thorvald was also a member of the United Methodist Church, Albany, WI.

He is survived by his wife, Pauline; a son, Lawrence (Connie Joy) Olson, Evansville, WI; two daughters, Teresa (Keith) Blumer, Albany, WI and Cynthia Pryce, Brodhead, WI; a brother, Kenneth (Betty) Olson, Cherry Valley, IL; a sister-inlaw, Norabelle Olson, Rockford, IL; nine grandchildren, thirty-two great-grandchildren and seven great great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Linda, in infancy, two brothers, Her-

bert Olson and Otto Hagen; three sisters, Jean Frye, Nevina Monson and Alice Nordstrom.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, February 2, 2019, at the Albany United Methodist Church with Rev. Tom Moe officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Albany, WI, with military honors. Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday, February 1, 2019 and from 10 a.m. until time of services at the church on Saturday. The D.L. Wisconsin’s early-stage health and life science firms and the Center for Technology Commercialization (CTC) received national attention for the state’s success over the past decade in landing competitive federal grants.

Wisconsin ranked third after Oregon and Vermont in securing Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) from 20082017. The 23 percent win rate for applications (248 awards from 1,056 submissions) resulted in $87 million invested in the state’s entrepreneurial efforts.

The State Science & Technology Institute (SSTI), a national nonprofit organization, reported the newly available data and cited CTC’s support in boosting clients through its training programs.

“We are fortunate to work with talented inventors and innovators from all over the state who are making a difference in their fields, from biotech to manufacturing to agriculture,” said CTC Associate Director Dave Linz.

“The high success rate is evidence that CTC’s portfolio of programming helps clients access the business skills and resources important for funding across all 11 agencies with SBIR/STTR funding.”

“The success rate for NIH awards demonstrates not just the level of innovation in Wisconsin, but also the grasp our entrepreneurs have on the important nuances that differentiate successful opportunities from the average,” said Aaron Hagar, vice president of entrepreneurship and innovation at Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC). “SBIR awards are incredibly competitive, much like the business world, and this is a strong indication that Wisconsin is on the path to more successful tech companies that have what it takes to thrive.”

SBIR Ready, a month-long introductory immersion course, was cited as an example of CTC’s offerings. Applications for 2019’s SBIR Ready cohort are due in May. To learn more, go to www.wisconsinctc.org/sbir-ready.

Another important program is SBIR Advance, one of the few matching

grant programs for SBIR/STTR recipients in the nation. Developed with support from WEDC, the matching grant program fills critical funding gaps for market research, customer validation, patent validation and business model development.

SciArt Software, which offers design analysis and optimization software for aerospace and automotive engineers, used SBIR Advance to bring in a CEO with startup and industry experience, Karen Caswelch.

“We needed some business direction and a team member with business expertise who would be willing to take the type of risk I was asking them to take,” said Praveen Yadav, chief technology officer at SciArt Software, which announced in October that it raised $530,000 through the Idea Fund of La Crosse.

Thirteen rounds of SBIR Advance funding since 2014 have funded 78 awards totaling nearly $6 million.

Those businesses across the state reported hiring more than 175 employees and obtaining over $24 million in additional capital since receiving the grants.

Wisconsin companies that apply for the $2.5 billion in SBIR/STTR grants available each year fare well and are at least twice as likely to secure funding when they take advantage of CTC services, which include free consulting and micro grants to advance nascent firms in the biotech, manufacturing, food/agriculture, IT and other industries.

In fiscal years 2014-17, NIH SBIR/ STTR applicants working with CTC had a 42 percent success rate with $31.4 million in awards versus 19 percent for all NIH applications from Wisconsin during that time.

NIH is one of 11 federal agencies that distribute SBIR/STTR funding.

CTC’s success rate for all agency applications in fiscal years 2014-17 was 63 percent, bringing $56.3 million into the state. Nationally, the success rate for applications was 22 percent in 2015, the latest year for which data is available on SBIR.gov.
