German Interest Group schedules February meeting The next German Interest Group – Wisconsin meeting date is Tuesday, Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. at the Hedberg Public Library, Janesville.

Hedberg Public Library is hosting this joint meeting. Head of information services, Mary Buelow, will show their new genealogy section, and we will discuss the German genealogy resources that are in their holdings.

WRESTLING The wrestling team has been very busy with their past meets.

Their last weekend tournament was at the Rock County Dual. Brian McCullough and Jayson Starr both went 3-1 for the day, Mathew McCullough went 2-2, and Jacob Miller went 1-3. They also had a meet in Evansville Thursday, Jan. 23. Jacob Miller lost his match, and Jayson Starr and Brian McCullough both won their match.

The next two meets are on Thursday, Jan. 30, in Juda, and Saturday, Feb. 1, in Deerfield.

SCHOOL COUNSELING UPDATES Second semester has started, and last week was the start of 3rd quarter, so students began their new class schedules. Since last week was the first week of the quarter, there are no more schedule changes.

BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS Big Brothers Big Sisters is still continuing every Wednesday during the high school flex period.

Bigs and Littles are enjoying their time together playing games, doing homework, and drawing. There are many game options available for the matches to play including card games, board games, and Legos.

MIDDLE SCHOOL Throughout each semester middle school students are rewarded with Basement Bucks when they show the characteristics of good students. At the end of the semester, students come together and have a Basement Bucks Auction where they can buy fun items with their Bucks. At last semester’s auction, two tickets to a Badger basketball game were up for bids. John Klopfenstein was the lucky student who

SCHOLASTIC MAGAZINE AWARD WINNER Eighth-grader Blake Adkins was chosen as a winner of Scope’s Good Enough Contest in the November issue of Scholastic Magazine! He wrote a fantastic ode to the Orion shirt and won a copy of The Next Great Paulie Frank by Ali Benjamin. Great work, Blake!

MONROE DEN GIVE BACK PARTY On Saturday, Feb. 1, the Girl Scouts will be hosting a party at the Roller Den in Monroe. This event will be from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.

The cost at the door will be $5 or 1 canned food item.

DADDY DAUGHTER DANCE Girls ages 5-12 and their dads (grandpas, uncles, or adult male figures) are welcome to come to the Juda Community Center for a night of dancing, door prizes, and many more fun activities. The dance will be held on Saturday, Feb. 1 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The cost to attend is $20 per dad and daughter couple and $5 for any additional guests. All proceeds of this event go back into the community as well as for future daddy/daughter dances.

ALL DRESSED UP Free prom dresses will be available at Madison College on Saturday, March 7! The fun begins at 7:30 a.m. and goes until 4 p.m. Registration opens on Friday, Feb. 7 at ADUMadison.com. Be sure to get registered so you do not miss out!

MUSIC DEPARTMENT The music department is still working hard to prepare for the upcoming NOLA trip. The trip will be over spring break, and students will be going with Blackhawk, Monticello, and Albany. Final payment amounts were handed out and are due very soon. Students are also selling Subway cards for more fundraising. Let any music student know if you are interested in buying any. Students are also working on picking out songs for Solo and Ensemble. This year’s Solo and Ensemble contest will be held in Pecatonica on Saturday, Feb. 15.

to compete against other schools in a math competition. Then on Thursday, April 23, four seventh and four eighth-grade students will take their turn. More to come once the competition has been held on how they do!

CANYON CAMP Planning has started for the middle school-wide trip to Canyon Camp. This is an outdoor educational opportunity that, in the past, had been shared with the Monticello 6th-grade class. We are now tackling the adventure on our own and making it for our entire middle school student body. More information is to come as more plans get set!

MATH DEPARTMENT This week in Algebra I, students are learning about loans and how important it is to pay them back on time. In Geometry, students are continuing to learn about triangles, angles, and sides in trig week. Algebra II is continuing their stocks project and is starting to calculate their total profit. Pre-Calculus is finishing their zombie project and will be introduced to inverse functions.

In Engineering, students are looking at water lines in the school and how to optimize water flow. In Calculus, students are learning about advanced integration functions and how to approach integration with U substitution. In College Engineering, students are starting with orthographic views and how to identify surfaces based on principle views compared to a 3D model.

SIX RIVERS MATH MEET The Six Rivers Math Meet will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 19.

The math department is looking for adults willing to volunteer to help with the meet. No experience in math is required, and volunteers’ jobs will be distributing and monitoring the tests. If you are able to volunteer, please contact Juda Schools as soon as possible.

STEAM The steam competition was held on January 17. The first-place winner was Nicky Pina. Second place went to Mike Klitzke and Sarah Farias. Third place was won by Luke McCullough, Skylar Withrow, and Brittney Pence. Honorable mention went to Celina Mendoza and Payton Johnson. Also, the best-designed car logo went to Lydia Bouc and Liana Daniels for their Mouse Express logo.

ANATOMY Students in Anatomy and Physiology are beginning to understand muscle fatigue and the different makeup of the muscles. They are using microscopes to look closely at tissues and identify whether a sample is skeletal, cardiac or smooth muscle. Eventually, they will be able to name over 100 muscles in the human body.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION Physical education students have started their Pickleball unit. They are learning the rules of Pickleball

and strategies for playing. Students have also learned different styles of hitting and court positioning. In the following weeks, students will begin their Create A Game unit, in which they will design and develop their own (new game) for the rest of the class to play.

BOYS BASKETBALL Last Tuesday the JV and Varsity had a non-conference matchup against Belmont at home. Both the JV and Varsity lost their games. The final score of the Varsity game was 31 - 48. The leading scorers from Juda were Gavin Kammerer with 11 points, followed by Avery Sheaffer with 8 points, and Royce Brauer with 6 points. The boys also played Thursday night at Barneveld High School. They ended with a tough loss to Barneveld. The next boys’ basketball game will be Friday, Jan. 31, at Belmont for their Six Rivers Crossover Game. After that, they will play Monday, Feb. 3, at home against Black Hawk to make up for the game that was canceled due to bad weather conditions.

GIRLS BASKETBALL The girls’ basketball team finished off their bye week with a home game Saturday. The ladies competed against Wayland Academy. This week starts the second round of conference. They will play a home game against Highland on Tuesday, Jan. 28 and will travel to Pecatonica on Thursday the 30th.

Senior and Parent Night will be held Friday, Feb. 7, at 7 p.m. against Barneveld. We encourage all parents to attend and arrive at 6:35 p.m.

We will recognize all seniors and parents before the game. Reminder: All games will start at 7 p.m. unless noted otherwise.

SOFTBALL WINTER WORKOUTS Softball winter workouts will be held at the end of every school day.

Those trying out for softball in the spring are encouraged to make as many workouts as they can. Softball batting cages will also be held at the school on Sundays at 12:30 p.m.

ENGLISH English I is reading the short story “A Dangerous Game.” English II is studying “The Cask of Amontillado,” by Poe. English III is still working on its slavery unit. Oral Communications is studying perception. English Honors is analyzing Macbeth.

SPANISH CLUB Spanish Club crewneck order forms were due on Friday, Jan. 24.

The crewnecks should be coming in two to four weeks.

PSYCHOLOGY The psychology class is learning about compliance and cults. They recently watched various videos on Jonestown, Heaven’s Gate, and David Koresh and the Branch Davidians.

STATISTICS In statistics class, students are learning about confidence intervals. They are getting back into the

groove after finals last week and their big group project.

NATIONAL ICE CREAM FOR BREAKFAST DAY On Friday, Jan. 31 the kitchen staff will be celebrating National Ice Cream for Breakfast Day by serving ice cream with all the toppings for breakfast!

FFA Upcoming events for FFA: District LDE’s will be held in Evansville on February 10. Spring Fruit Sales forms are due back Wednesday, Feb. 12. All cash has to be turned in with them as well. If you want an FFA jacket, see Ms. Beitz during Flex period.

TEACHER OF THE WEEK The teacher of the week is Mr. Robert Taylor, who is in his second year of teaching at Juda School.

Taylor’s favorite movie is The Departed, which casts a career criminal named Colin Sullivan.

His favorite musical artist is Tupac Shakur, better known as 2pac. The Chicago Cubs are his favorite team.

Taylor’s favorite part of teaching music education is watching a piece transform from practice to performance and observing the growth made by the band.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS HONORS The English Language Arts Honors class has started to learn about the infamous Scottish play, Macbeth. After a brief period of getting some background information on the play, the class has begun to watch the 1971 rendering of the famous play. It hat entertained the class for several days now, and they have just passed the murder of the original king. After completing the movie, the class will be required to write as essay analyzing Macbeth’s actions.

SENIOR OF THE WEEK The senior of the week this week is Skylar Withrow. Her favorite high school memories are her lunchtime conversations with her friends.

Her favorite teacher is Mrs. Elmer because she listens and gives great advice to students. Her future plans are to start work right after high school. Her favorite lunch is chicken nuggets and mashed potatoes. If she won the lottery, she would help her family, give to charity, and save the rest. If she could live in any state for the rest of her life, it would be California because of the weather and lifestyle.

Green County update The January Green County Board meeting, held Jan. 14, was attended by 22 of the 31 Green County Board Supervisors. The first order of business was a presentation by Tracy Pierner of Blackhawk Technical College about the college’s reach and impact in our community. He talked about how Blackhawk Tech is meeting the changing needs of today’s learners, and where they are looking to improve. One of these opportunities for improvement, as presented, is a Public Safety and Transportation Training Center Project. This project, should it be approved, would benefit many areas of our workforce, and have far reaches outside of even our local communities: due to the uniqueness of the proposed center, it would be under high demand from those outside our area. The presentation was informative, and I am intrigued by the proposed training facility and the opportunities it could provide. There was no action on this agenda item, the presentation was for informational purposes.

The Board passed a resolution approving Human Services contracts.

Quite a few of the services provided by the Green County Human Services department are contracted.

This is done for a variety of reasons.

Each year those contracts need to be approved, and because the amount is over $75,000 it requires the approval of the full County Board. It passed unanimously.

The Green County Board approved the bankruptcy plan of Inys Therapeutics, Inc. This will increase the likelihood that Green County, and other municipalities, will be able to recover in future Chapter 11 cases of opioid defendants and in the nationwide litigation.

Tuesday, Feb. 18 is the next election date. This is the Spring Primary which will narrow down the can-

didates for the April election; two Supreme Court Justice candidates will be selected for the April ballot.

Welty Environmental Center hosts Brodhead FFA Tour Day 14th Annual Maple Sugar Fest Get ready for the sap to flow and the syrup to boil! Welty is hosting its 14th annual Maple Sugar Fest on Saturday, Feb. 22 from 8am-noon at Big Hill Center, located at 1201 Big Hill Court in Beloit. The morning will be filled with maple sugar-themed activities, such as: hikes, an active condenser boiling sap down to make syrup, a drum circle led by the Seven Nations Native American group, children’s story time, basket weaving, woodcarving, and take-home crafts. There will also be a delicious pancake breakfast, featuring real maple syrup, sausage, apple sauce, and hot drinks. The cost is $8 for adults, $3 for kids 2-12, and children under 2 eat for free. Starting February 1, discounted pre-sale tickets ($7 for adults) will be available through Welty’s website (weltycenter.org) until Friday, Feb. 21.

“We look forward to hosting folks at Big Hill Park and sharing this late-winter tradition,” said Brenda Plakans, Welty executive

director. “The program staff has a wonderful hands-on experience for visitors, after they eat their pancakes. Folks will be able to taste sap as it comes out of the tree, try their hands at drilling a hole in a tree trunk, and warm themselves by a bonfire while they see how much sap it takes to make a bottle of syrup (almost 40 gallons)!”

This is the third year Welty has invited the Seven Nations Drum Circle, to present a friendship ceremony and teach visitors about Native American maple sugar traditions. This process of using the early run of sap to create maple sugar was introduced to European settlers

by Native Americans, as a strategy for getting through the last months of winter before spring food resources became available. Maple Sugar was used as a seasoning, as well as a treat, and was a center of early spring celebrations.

“Come enjoy the early signs of spring – rain or shine (or snow!)

– at Welty,” encouraged Plakans.

The Brodhead FFA will be hosting a tour day to Dubuque, IA on Friday, Feb. 28 to celebrate FFA week. We will be touring John Deere Dubuque Works and visiting the Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium. The bus will leave at 8 a.m. from the high school parking lot and will return around 6 p.m. The cost is $30 which does not include lunch at Culver’s. This opportunity is open to anyone 13 years and older and the bus is limited to 53 seats, first come, first serve. Obituaries

CAROL ANN AYEN Carol Ann Ayen, age 74, passed away peacefully at her home in Brodhead.

Carol was born the daughter of Leonard and Ethel (Frey) Vogel on Aug. 9, 1945 at her family farm near Footville. She attended the little red one room school house right up the road from her family farm, where she worked on the dairy farm until 2005. Carol liked to attend various Bible study groups, she enjoyed listening to NPR Radio, cooking, scrap booking and collecting recipes.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at the Collinwood Memory Care Center in Brodhead for the care they gave to Carol.

Carol is survived by two children, Michael (Tracy) Ayen and Jeff Ayen; six grandchildren, Matthew (Stacey) Ayen, Nicholaus Ayen, Tyler (Bryanna) Shear, Tanner Shear, Tayanae Shear (Nicholas Page) and Samantha Ayen; four great grandchildren, Gannon Shear, Rylee Shear, Nolan Ayen and Madalyn Page; three nieces, Gayla (Jeff) Schultz, Andrea (John) Lauper and Jennifer Trader and many other nieces, nephews, other relatives and special friends.

Carol was preceded in death by

her parents, a sister, Joyce Statz and a nephew, Todd Trader.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the family in her memorial.

Funeral services were held at the DL Newcomer Funeral Home, 1105 E. 9th Avenue in Brodhead on Jan. 26.

A visitation took place at the funeral home until the time of service. Burial concluded Jan. 27, at the Milton Lawn Cemetery Chapel in Janesville.

KENNETH HENRY MEYER Kenneth Henry Meyer, age 89, of Brodhead, Wisconsin died on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2020.

He was born on Jan. 3, 1931 in Mundelein, Illinois, the son of George and Edith (Wirtz) Meyer. He was a graduate of Libertyville Illinois High School and a 1952 graduate of Illinois State University, Normal, Illinois. He served in the Marine Corps from 1952 until 1955 and was stationed in Korea.

He was a member of Illinois Farm Bureau, Wisconsin Farm Bureau, VFW Post #6858, a supervisor on Spring Valley Town Board since 1977, and an active member of the Brodhead United Methodist Church where he served on many committees over the years. Ken taught school in Diamond Lake, Illinois and Reno, Nevada before going into farming

with his uncle in the Mundelein area.

He farmed in the Brodhead area from 1970 until he retired in 1995. He also helped out during tax season at his brother-in-law’s tax service in Libertyville, Illinois. Ken especially enjoyed golfing with his friends and was a lifetime fan of the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears.

Ken is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sandra Meyer of Brodhead, a daughter Bonny (Edison) Blake of Elkhorn, WI, two sons, Leigh (Victoria) Meyer of Santa Rosa, CA, James (Chris) Meyer of Bloomington Illinois, seven grandchildren, Iris, Wilder and Spencer Blake, Madison James, Logan and Bryce Clarenson, Caleb Meyer and 4 great grandchildren, Mason, Wyatt and Parker Clarenson and Vincent James.

He was preceded in death by his parents, aunts, one uncle, George and his sister Helen (Carl) Kakenmaster of Grayslake, Illinois.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Wisconsin Chapter or the Agrace Hospice of Janesville.

Funeral services were held at the DL Newcomer Funeral Home, 1105 E. 9th Avenue in Brodhead on Jan. 25.

A visitation took place at the funeral home until the time of services.

Burial concluded at the Greenwood Cemetery with military honors.

NORMA MADGE SCHWARTZ Norma Madge Schwartz, age 99,

passed away on Jan. 17, 2020 at the Pleasant View Nursing Home in Monroe.

Norma was born on April 12, 1920 the daughter of Homer and Ethel (Myers) Morehouse.

She married Alvin Schwartz on Dec. 1, 1938. Alvin preceded her in death in 2002.

Norma is survived by three

children, Pat Smith, Priscilla (Paul) Kaderly and Mike Schwartz; eight grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren and one niece.

Norma was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Alvin; one sister, Margaret (Merlin) Burkhalter; daughter-in-law, Diane Schwartz; sonin-law, Kenny Smith and a nephew, Dick Burkhalter.

Private family funeral services will be held at a later date.

The DL Newcomer Funeral Home is assisting the family.
