Juda Boy Scout Troop 105 holds final farewell By Jeremy Gokey CORRESPONDENT
The community of Juda, Wis. had a chance to bid farewell to Boy Scouts of America Troop 105 on Jan. 11 at Zion United Methodist Church. Jimmy Dundee has been scoutmaster of Troop 105 since 2006 and was left with only one scout at the beginning of the school year. The last scout decided not to continue with scouting and Dundee and the other leaders were faced with the difficult decision to shut the program down. Dundee had run a successful scouting program. “I had the best troop ever,” Dundee said. Despite only having up to nine scouts, Troop 105 won five Gilwell Staffs at Blackhawk Area Council’s Canyon Camp near Stockton, Ill. The Gilwell staff is awarded each summer camp week to the top troop. Dundee also had twelve scouts earn the rank of Eagle Scout, a rank attained by only two percent of scouts since 1912. Dundee spoke highly of his scouts. “They’re so easy going, no problems or complaints,” Dundee said, “They did what they wanted to do and had to do, all good leaders.” The troop did many community service projects in Juda
and raked leaves at Blue Mounds State Park, Blue Mounds, Wis., in the spring. Dundee’s final assistant scoutmasters were Melvin Reckamp and Ralph Taylor. Dundee’s daughter, Christy Dundee, was Juda’s first female assistant scoutmaster in 2017. Dundee stated it was difficult to find adult leaders in the community. Recruitment had been an ongoing problem for the troop. Juda’s Cub Scout program shut down around 2004. Cub Scout programs are a great recruitment resource for Boy Scout troops. Meetings to recruit new scouts did not have much success and enrollment stayed between four and nine scouts. Dundee donated all the equipment from Troop 105 to Brodhead’s Troop 108. He also donated the Cub Scout’s pinewood derby track to Brodhead’s Pack 108.
