Antioch resident to appear on ‘AllRound Champion’ airing March 19 Tune in on March 19 at 7:00 p.m. as 13-year-old Antioch resident Marshall Gehrke will be on a Canadian produced television show called “All-Round Champion”. The show will be aired on BYUtv in the U.S. All-Round Champion is an 11-episode, 60 minute series that features ten of North America’s most decorated young athletes who compete in the ultimate challenge in sports like wakeboarding, gymnastics and skateboarding.

The catch? They won’t be competing in their own sports; they’ll be competing in each other’s. Scored on skill, sportsmanship and improvement at the end of the series, one athlete will be crowned the All-Round Champion.

As a national champion winning BMX racer Gehrke was chosen to compete against 9 other top young athletes/national champions of 9 other sports in the USA/Canada. A film crew follow him around for 2 days in the Antioch area and the Waukegan BMX track to do some background filming. The show should have 11 weekly episodes and one of them will be the “BMX Week” where the competitors will race each other in BMX and will have more of a full background on Marshall and likely show a lot of the Village of Antioch and the skate park.

Gehrke’s parents are hosting a watch party at Cornicione’s in Antioch from 6-10 p.m. on March 19 for the Premiere and it will be open to everyone. When we know which week is “BMX Week” there will also be another party there with an open invitation. Otherwise the show airs on BYUtv in the US, which is a DirectTV only channel or it is free on the BYUtv app which can be loaded on phones or smart TVs. Lake County Forest Preserves holding job fair March 12 The Lake County Forest Preserves is hosting a governmental job fair from 2–6 p.m., Thursday, March 12, at the Greenbelt Cultural Center, 1215 Green Bay Road in North Chicago. Seventeen local organizations have a variety of full-time, parttime, temporary and seasonal positions they are seeking to fill.

Organizations involved in the job fair include the Lake County Forest Preserves, Gurnee and Buffalo Grove police departments, Villages of Gurnee and Libertyville, Cities of North Chicago and Lake Forest, Clerk of the Circuit Court, U.S. Census, Lake County Workforce Development, and Lake County Department of Transportation. Also involved are park districts in Highland Park, Zion, Foss, Deerfield, Vernon Hills and Waukegan. These organizations have a variety of full-time, part-time, temporary and seasonal positions they are seeking to fill.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office is currently accepting applications for Sheriff’s Deputies. Individuals interested in a professional, rewarding career in law enforcement are encouraged to apply.

Testing will take place at Woodstock North High School on Saturday, May 9, 2020, doors open at 8:00 a.m.

Applications and all required documents must be received

by Tuesday, April 28, 2020 by 4:30 p.m.

The minimum qualifications to apply are: • Applicant must be 21 years of age at hiring.

Single-vehicle crash results in two deaths On March 8, at approximately 6:45 a.m., Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to West Russell Road and Delany Road in Newport Township, for a traffic crash with injuries. When sheriff’s deputies arrived, they located a 2006 Infiniti sedan with major damage.

Northbound Delany Road reaches a dead-end at Russell Road, and drivers must turn left or right onto Russell Road. Preliminary investigation shows the Infiniti, driven by an adult male, was traveling northbound on Delany Road. As the vehicle

approached Russell Road, the driver failed to reduce their speed, drove off the east side of the roadway into an embankment. This caused the Infiniti to go airborne for approximately 200 feet. The vehicle was airborne as it crossed Russell Road, before crashing to the ground.

The vehicle was occupied by the driver and an adult male front seat passenger. Both were pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded and is in the process of identifying the driver and passenger, and the names were not available as of press time.

Excessive speed appears to be a contributing factor in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.

Motorcycle crash kills one, injures driver On March 1, at 7:57 p.m. the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department investigated a fatal motor crash involving a motorcycle that was carrying two occupants in the 26800 block of Camp Lake Road.

Initial reports indicate that the operator of the motorcycle failed to negotiate the curve at

Colindres-Galeano was taken into custody without further incident and transported to the St. Tammany Parish Jail, where he remains held pending extradition hearings.

Alcohol was a factor in the crash and the Sheriff’s department is requesting charges of homicide by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle against the operator.

Christian named to Illinois Wesleyan Dean’s List Mikayla Christian, of Antioch was named to the Dean’s List for the fall semester of the 2019-20 academic year at Illinois Wesleyan University.

Applications for the summer program became available February 1 and will be accepted until Tuesday, March 31 at 5:00 p.m.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office announces traffic safety initiative The Lake County Sheriff’s Office will conduct additional traffic safety patrols this St. Patrick’s Day to identify and arrest impaired drivers, while encouraging people to wear their seatbelts.

Celebrated throughout the country, St. Patrick’s Day is one of the deadliest holidays of the year due to the number of drunk drivers on the road. If you’ll be drinking or using another impairing substance, plan ahead for a sober

ride home.

“We urge the community to enjoy St. Patrick’s Day responsibly,” said Sheriff John Idleburg. “From March 12 through March 18, we will have extra traffic patrols on our roadways to keep impaired drivers off the road and help ensure everyone makes it to their destination safely.”

Always remember to designate a sober drive, use a ride-share service, call a cab, or stay where you are

at. Driving impaired is never a solution. Wearing a seatbelt is your best defense in a crash, so when you are in the car, be sure to buckle-up!

Fox Lake Police release investigation conclusion from Oct. 20 fatal crash On October 20, 2019 at 7:23 p.m., the Fox Lake Police responded to a single vehicle, double fatal motor vehicle collision on Illinois Route 173, west of Converse Ave., Fox Lake. The vehicle involved in the collision was being driven

by Theo Owens and prior to the collision he was actively fleeing from a Genoa City Wisconsin police officer. The pursuit was initiated in Genoa City following officer’s attempt to stop the vehicle for a traffic violation. The pursuit continued based on Mr. Owen’s intentional felony conduct, based on Wisconsin statutes.

As the pursuit entered Illinois, a Spring Grove police officer came to the assistance of the pursuing officer and engaged in the pursuit behind the Genoa City officer. Both officers were operating fully marked squad cars. During the course of the pursuit both officers had activated the vehi-

cle equipped emergency lights and siren. No physical contact was made between the police vehicles or the fleeing Toyota.

The vehicle being operated by Mr. Owens was a 1994 Toyota Camry, and he had two female passengers in the vehicle at the time the pursuit was initiated. As a result of the collision, Mr. Owens and one of his passengers died. The second passenger was seriously injured during the collision.

Fox Lake police officers were not involved in the pursuit, but responded to the collision site to provide assistance and begin the investigation.

Based on the severity of the injuries, damage to the fleeing vehicle, extensive crash scene area, and police involvement in the pursuit prior to the collision, the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) was activated to assist in the investigation and lead the traffic crash reconstruction.

At the conclusion of the investigation and traffic crash reconstruction, the facts revealed were reviewed by the Lake County, Illinois State’s Attorney’s staff. It has been determined that the criminal actions of and criminal fault for these tragic events rest solely with Owens. Owens had the opportunity at all times prior to the collision to simply stop fleeing. The Genoa City officer did not cause or contribute to cause the crash and was more than 600 feet behind the Toyota when Owen lost control of the vehicle and subsequently crashed. No criminal liability has been assigned to the police officers involved in the pursuit.

‘Monty and Rose – The Documentary’ coming to MCC March 26 McHenry County Audubon and The Wildflower Preservation and Propagation Committee are proud to present Monty and Rose – The Documentary. This free event with a panel discussion afterward will be presented on Thursday, March 26 from 6:45-9:00 p.m..

“Monty and Rose” tells the story of a pair of endangered piping plovers that suc-

cessfully nested at Chicago’s Montrose Beach in the summer of 2019, the first of the species to nest in Chicago in 64 years. The short, independent documentary chronicles these special birds and an unpredictable series of events including a proposed music festival that propelled the birds to national headlines.

“Monty and Rose” features interviews with an

array of key players in the story, including biologists, birders, volunteers and the advocates who spoke out when the music festival was proposed. “Monty and Rose” is an independent project, funded through the generous support of backers on Kickstarter. Partners in the project include Turnstone Strategies, Wenkus Productions, Free Spirit Media and

Eileen Wagner Design. Music is by local indie favorites Congress of Starlings.

The presentation will take place at McHenry County College Leucht Auditorium, 8900 U.S. 14, Crystal Lake, IL 60012.

These funders highly recommend that any organization interested in applying for their grants attend this workshop—even if they’ve received funding in the past.

also said, however, the process does not require the rigorous regulatory investigation that a regular effort to adjust consumer bills does.

Illinois PIRG Director Abe Scarr said while there is a reconciliation process each year in which utility companies “get some review” for their QIP spending, he said “that’s mostly an accounting exercise, not an accountability exercise.”

“No one here is suggesting that we compromise the safety of our infrastructure.

No one here is suggesting that we need to look at the types of jobs that are being utilized or are being worked on here,” Villivalam said. “… We want this work to be done; how it’s done and at what rates and at what expense of our consumers, that’s the question that we’re trying to address and have a conversation about.”

Mason said the General Assembly was told in 2013

by Peoples Gas, which serves customers in Chicago, that the program would cost about $1.14 per month on a consumer bill or about $2 billion total.

Currently, she said, that company is charging a fee greater than $9 per month and the estimated cost of the program is nearing $11 billion.

Peoples Gas representatives, however, said the cost over the next 20 years “is forecasted to be $6.8 billion if completed by 2030 or $7.8 billion if completed by 2040.”

In a statement, a spokesperson for the company pointed to a 4-percent rate cap on what can be recovered by the utility in a year, and said the “urgent need for the System Modernization Program has recently been confirmed by an independent engineering study ordered by the Illinois Commerce Commission.”

“The study found that over 80 percent of the pipes in the Peoples Gas delivery system—some more than 100 years old – have an average remaining life of less than 15 years, and the SMP will increase public and customer

safety by significantly reducing risks in Chicago’s natural gas delivery network,” said Danisha Hall, director of corporate communications for the company.

She added the average cost of a consumer bill is 6 percent lower than it was six years ago when the law was passed.

Nicor gas, which serves some of western Illinois and from the Chicago suburbs to as far south as Champaign and Pike counties, has already replaced its cast iron pipes but still plans to spend $1.6 billion in the next two years, according to the coalition.

This created $260 million in rate hikes the past two years, according to the coalition’s news release.

“While we have made great strides in these modernization efforts—retiring the last known cast iron in our system in 2018—as of 2020, we still have more than 4,500 miles of natural gas main that is more than 60 years old. Investing in Illinois, or investments in QIP, allows us to continue to make these investments to ensure every customer’s energy needs are met safely and reliably now and well into the future,” Nicor Communications Manager Jennifer Golz said in a statement.

She said gas bills for Nicor customers are typically 16

percent lower than they were in 2010. She also questioned the $1.6 billion in spending over the next two years, noting that about half that sum would include “other capital investments such as fleet vehicles, buildings and our Meter Modernization project.”

The coalition said Ameren Illinois, which serves three quarters of the state down to near its southern border, claimed it would spend $330 million on capital projects, but has already topped $466 million.

Marcelyn Love, an Ameren communications executive, said the coalition’s effort was intentionally misleading.

“By claiming that Ameren Illinois has no clear public safety justification for making system improvements, these groups are willfully ignoring a federal law which requires natural gas utilities to implement pipeline safety upgrades by 2035,” she said.

“This includes upgrades to transmission and distribution lines and improved technology to maintain proper pressurization of the system. Ameren Illinois will continue to do our part to help strengthen the safety, reliability and integrity of the natural gas distribution system every day for the customers that rely on us.”

Train to be a Youth Program Naturalist Volunteer at Volo Bog Volo Bog is looking for volunteers to assist in the Youth Program. Training will be held on Thursday, March 19 and Wednesday, March 25 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Youth Program Naturalist Volunteers lead tours of Volo Bog for students from grades 2 – 12. Group size generally is between 10 – 15 students. Training prepares YPNs to be comfortable working with groups of children and provides enough in-depth knowledge about bogs

and wetlands to have fun! After the first two training sessions, new YPNs will shadow and assist experienced volunteers at least three times, then will take their own tours.

Commit is one day per week (a Wednesday or a Thursday) for one year, with assignments primarily from April – early November. Opportunities are open to adults ages 18 and older.

CLC offers affordable summer camps, college classes Learning doesn’t have to take a break this summer. Send your kids to college! Affordable STEM and STEAM camps at College of Lake County (CLC) are taught by experienced educators for children in first grade all the way up to high school.
