Three cases of Legionnaires’ Disease identified in Lake County senior living facility The Lake County Health Department is reporting an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease at the Brookdale Vernon Hills senior living facility on Milwaukee Avenue, with three confirmed cases including one death. The senior living community is actively notifying residents, the residents’ identified contact(s), and staff.

“Since receiving the reports of Legionnaires’ disease cases late Monday, the Lake County Health Department has been working closely with the Illinois Department of Public Health and Brookdale staff to investigate potential sources of contamination and to identify individuals who may have been exposed to Legionella bacteria,” said Mark Pfister, Executive Director for the Health Department.

Legionnaires’ disease is a type of severe pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria.

It is treatable with antibiotics (drugs that kill bacteria in the body). Most people who get sick need care in a hospital but make a full recovery. However, about 1 out of 10 people who get Legionnaires’ disease will die from the infection.

“We urge any residents and visitors of the Brookdale facility who are currently experiencing pneumonia symptoms—cough, shortness of breath, headache, muscle aches and fever—to see a doctor right away for testing,” said Dr. Sana Ahmed, Medical Epidemiologist at the Lake County Health Department. “Early treatment of Legionnaires’ disease reduces the severity of the illness and improves your chances for recovery.”

Most healthy people do not get Legionnaires’ disease after being exposed to Legionella bacteria. People at increased risk of getting sick include: • People ages 50 years or older • Current or former smokers • People with a chronic lung disease (like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or emphysema) • People with weak immune systems or who take drugs that weaken the immune system (like after a transplant operation or chemotherapy) • People with cancer • People with underlying illnesses such as diabetes, kidney failure, or liver failure Legionella bacteria grow in

areas of warm water. They have been found in creeks and ponds, water taps (primarily hot water taps), hot water tanks, cooling towers and evaporative condensers, whirlpool spas, and decorative fountains. In order to be infected with the bacteria, a person must breathe in a mist or vapor that contains the bacteria. There is no evidence that the Legionella bacteria are spread from person-to-person.

According to provisional data from the Illinois Department of Public Health, 608 cases of Legionnaires’ disease were reported statewide in 2019. Legionnaires’ is a reportable disease in the state of Illinois, and cases must be reported to the local health department within seven days.

Timely reporting allows identification of additional cases and control of possible contaminated sources.

CLC mentor program supports Latinx students

As a first-generation college student from Libertyville, Jose Mendoza felt more than a little nervous when he started at College of Lake County (CLC) last fall.

From registering for courses to writing term papers, navigating college culture created as many questions as answers.

CLC’s Éxito student success program stepped up to help Mendoza and the hundreds of other Latinx students connect to college resources and workshops through a culturally relevant lens with the support of professional mentors. Generously funded this year by the Steans Family Foundation and College of Lake County Foundation, Éxito started out as a pilot project in 2015. Since then, it has proven to improve retention rates for Latinx students compared to those not involved in the program. Éxito, appropriately named after the Spanish word for “success,” helps Latinx students persist in their studies so they graduate or transfer to a four-year university. More than 20 college and local community members volunteer as mentors to help students make it through their first year at CLC and beyond.

“Beyond personal development, Éxito

gives students the opportunity to network with other students and professionals at social and cultural events,” said Carolina Rodriguez, CLC multicultural retention coordinator. “Mentors speak both Spanish and English, giving students a sense of belonging and support outside the home. The mentors and academic coaches give good advice about applying for financial aid, deciding which courses to take and where to plug in socially, driving student commitment to success.”

Beyond academic support, students like Mendoza appreciate the opportunities to learn and meet other students at the monthly Éxito workshops.

The mentors and tutors in the Éxito program helped first-year business student Maria Fernandez sharpen her writing skills, apply for scholarships and expand her social life. “When I started here last fall, I thought everybody went to class and then went home or to a job,” said Fernandez. “Éxito hosts many social activities, including game nights. It’s been a fun way to meet new people.”

On February 4, the Lake County Sheriff’s Special Investigations Group concluded a long-term investigation into a convicted felon and documented street gang member who was illegally selling firearms.

Marcus A. Hudson, 24, of the 200 block of Woodland Drive, Round Lake Beach was arrested without incident on February 4, after Special Investigations Group Detectives witnessed him selling a semi-automatic pistol, which was later determined to have been stolen in an Ingleside burglary. Prior to that, Hudson sold a firearm which had been stolen during a burglary in the City of McHenry.

After reviewing the facts and evidence, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the following charges for Hudson: two counts of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon (class 3 felonies; aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon (no FOID card) (class 4 felony); aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon (no CCL) (class 4 felony).

Ninety-one years later, the bloody Valentine’s Day shootings of seven men in a Lincoln Park garage during a Prohibition-era gang war remains a pivotal point in Chicago mobster lore — a massacre that led directly to Al Capone’s downfall.

Those visiting the Volo Auto Museum on Valentine’s Day weekend will have a free opportunity to learn about gangster history. The museum’s Crime and Punishment Hall, a special exhibit that normally requires a separate admission fee to enter, will be open to all museum guests at no extra charge Feb. 14-16.

In January, the Lake County Sheriff’s Special Investigations Group conducted a multi-day human trafficking suppression operation to suppress the demand for purchased sex.

The Sheriff’s Special Investigations Group joined a coalition of law-enforcement agencies in a nationwide operation specifically targeting customers of prostitute known as “Johns.” Many of the individuals selling sex are not doing so willingly, a large number are being forced into involuntary servitude.

This was a web-based operation and utilized classified advertising websites, regularly used as a medium for prostitution.

When the “Johns” arrived and offered money to the undercover detectives for sexual acts, they were arrested and transported to the Lake County Jail.

Over the past nine years, this nationwide effort led to the arrests of more than 10,000 total “Johns” and sex traffickers.

On January 29 at approximately 5:40 p.m. officers from the Waukegan Police Department’s Patrol Division responded to the area of Sheridan Road and Greenwood Avenue for a subject lying in the roadway.

Upon arrival, officers located a female victim in the roadway that was badly injured. The victim was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center where she

Sheriff’s Office offering scholarships

Lake County Sheriff John Idleburg will be awarding two college scholarships for $500 each as part of the Illinois Sheriffs’ Association (ISA) college scholarship program.

The scholarships will be awarded to students who wish to pursue higher education in 2020-2021 academic year. Applicants must be enrolled full-time at a certified institute of higher learning.

Applications are available at the Lake County Sheriff’s Office or ISA website at ilsheriff.org. Students must submit all documentations to their Sheriff’s Office by March 15, 2020.

On February 5 and 6, 2020 the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office conducted an arrest warrant service operation which resulted in the arrests of 15 individuals on felony warrants.

The warrant service operation was headed by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Apprehension Unit, and was assisted by members of the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Task Force, the United States Marshals Service Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, and the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office.

During the execution of these arrest warrants one illegal firearm, multiple rounds of ammunition, and drugs were seized resulting in addi-

The Richmond/Spring Grove Area Rotary Club will be holding their annual Spaghetti Dinner on Wednesday, Feb. 19 from 4-8 p.m.

The dinner is being held in a new location this year, the Richardson Adventure Farm Event Barn located at 909 English Prairie Road, Spring Grove, Ill. Circuit Judge Ukena retires

Circuit Judge Jay W. Ukena retired, effective January 30, after over 11 years on the bench.

“I am humbled, honored, and proud to have served the people of Lake County for over 40 years. I worked hard to be a good attorney and a good judge,” said Judge Ukena.

The Honorable Jay W. Ukena was first elected Circuit Judge of the First Subcircuit in the November 2008 general election. He began his career in the Family Division in February 2009 and served as the Presiding Judge of the Family Division from January 2011 – June 2014. From there, he transferred to the Felony/Misdemeanor/Traffic Division where he presided over felony traffic matters. Judge Ukena most recently served two years as Chief Judge of the Nineteenth Judicial Circuit, from January 2, 2018 – January 1, 2020.

Prior to his judicial election, Judge Ukena was in private practice for twenty-nine years, which consisted of the areas of family law, criminal, traffic, and Social Security disability. He also served as general counsel for the North Shore Sanitary District, the Attorney for Waukegan Township,
