Woody Kelly was a well-liked Antioch native who became one of its wealthiest residents. He was flamboyant in his lifestyle, owning several yachts, Mercedes Benz automobiles and a large home on the lake. Woodruff Scoville Kelly Jr. made his home in Antioch and was known as an investment counselor. Well liked by other residents, he was described by a friend as an easygoing, overweight, extremely un-athletic man. Kelly lived in Antioch with his wife Ann and their children. Many residents and businesses invested their savings with Kelly, who promised a 16 to 19 percent return on their money. In less than four years, Kelly’s investment business flourished allowing him to move to a mansion along the lakeshore in what he believed to be Antioch. He began to purchase a variety of high-end toys including several Mercedes Benz automobiles, two airplanes, additional homes and several boats. He was considered to be a very friendly and generous man, often taking friends and investors out on his yacht. Life appeared to be very good for Kelly before things started to go wrong. First was Kelly’s problems with the Antioch High School District. According to a 1986 article in the Chicago Tribune, the high school district requested payment for his children’s tuition as the mansion Kelly was living in was actually over the state line and located in Wisconsin. A portion of his property was in Illinois, said to be the area where his tennis courts were located. Kelly was aware that his life and his financial security were about to crumble as the Illinois Secretary of State’s office began to look into his work after they received a complaint

The Lake County Health Department and Community Health Center’s Animal Care and Control program will offer a low-cost pet vaccination clinic from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 11, at the Antioch Township, 1625 Deep Lake Road, Antioch, and from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Village of Grayslake, 10 South Seymour Ave., Grayslake. Standard vaccine, tag and microchip costs for the vaccination clinics are priced based on if the pet is spayed/neutered or not. For pets that are spayed or neutered prices are as follows: • One-year rabies vaccination and Lake County tag is $20 • One-year rabies vaccination, tag and distemper is $25 • Distemper complex only is $10 • Microchip is $15 For pets that are not spayed or neutered prices are as follows: • One-year rabies vaccination and Lake County tag is $60 • One-year rabies vaccination, tag and distemper is $65 • Distemper complex only is $10 • Microchip is $15 Pets will be taken on a firstcome, first-served basis. All animals brought to the clinic must be at least four-months-old. Dogs must be leashed and cats placed in carriers. Only cash will be accepted on site. Proof of spay/neuter may be required.
