All aboard the North Pole Express

In 2012 Antioch Park and Recreation staff members Toni Galster and Libby Baker created a train trip for Camp Crayon Pre-school as a field trip.

Word got out about this fun event and the public wanted to be able to experience the same trip so the North Pole Express was started. Every year it has grown and at one time they were offering trips on 16 days.

The North Pole Express is now offered for the 12 Days of Christmas with the trains running Dec. 2-17 this year.

Guests get on the train in Antioch at 11:00 a.m. and make their way to Buffalo Grove where Galster, current Special Events Coordinator for the Antioch Parks & Recreation, and Anna Strobel, have transformed the station into the North Pole. Guests are greeted when they arrive, have hot dog and chips lunch, and Santa arrives at noon to greet the guests at their tables.

Each table then takes their turn visiting Santa to tell him of their Christmas wishes and each child receives a bell. While the other guests are waiting their turn coloring books are given to each child along with a letter for them to write to Santa.

Children also receive a bag with a craft project to work on while they wait.

Hot chocolate and cookies arrive at each table and once every child has visited Santa he reads “The Polar Express” to the group. Santa encourages the children to sing and practice their Ho, Ho, Ho’s with him. At 1:51 p.m. the train arrives to take everyone back to Antioch and this is when Santa announces he is riding back with them. Children get to spend time talking and taking photos with Santa as they make the trip back.

This year’s conductor is Sandra Simon, train station helper is Anna Strobel, and volunteers for the train and train station are Sheryl Pierce, Sheryl Stier, Aleksandra Schultz. Antioch Queens Lyric Stay, Madison Dempsey and Cayleigh Thompson also help out and assistants Alexis Strobel and Abby Strobel.

And then of course there is Santa Claus!

Tickets for this year’s train sold out, but mark your calendar for next year’s train. Tickets go on sale in mid-October and sell out quickly.

Boudreau participates in Augustana College athletic leadership program Each year, Augustana College athletes are selected by their head coaches to attend an athletic leadership program during the fall semester. Kyle Boudreau, Antioch, has demonstrated leadership qualities already in his respective sport, and had the ability to learn and refine his skills through the program. With a guest speaker each night of the program and different themed sessions, athletes learn more about their unique and different personalities, effective ways of communication, as well as

different leadership styles and approaches, while connecting with athletes in different sports than their own.

One of the many goals of the program is to better position student athletes that are leaders within their teams, within the Augustana College campus community, as well as with post-graduation endeavors.

Founded in 1860, Augustana College is a selective fouryear residential college of the liberal arts and sciences. The college is recognized for the innovative program Augie

Choice, which provides each student up to $2,000 to pursue a high-impact learning experience such as study abroad, an internship or research with a professor. Current students and alumni include 170 Academic All-Americans, two Nobel laureates, 13 college presidents and other distinguished leaders.

The college enrolls 2,500 students and is located along one of the world’s most important waterways, the Mississippi River, in a community that reflects the diversity of the United States.

S h e r i ff ’s Detectives arrested a Grayslake man after they found he burglarized his n e i g h b o r ’s home. The Carlos Zelaya burglary was captured on an indoor security camera which was previously installed by the homeowner.

On December 10, 2019, sheriff’s deputies responded to a residence in the 18100 block of West Lindenwood Drive, Grayslake, for a report of a residential burglary. The burglar stole cash from the residence, along with an interior security camera. Even though the burglar stole the security camera, video of him committing the burglary had already been saved in the ‘cloud.’

Further investigation revealed the burglar, Carlos H. Zelaya, 32, also of the 18100 block of West Lindenwood Drive, was a neighbor of the victim.

On December 11, 2019, sheriff’s detectives arrested Zelaya at his residence. The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved a residential burglary (class 1 felony) charge.

Zelaya remains held in the Lake County Jail pending an initial court hearing.

60 grams of heroin seized during search warrant

The Lake County Sheriff’s Special Investigations Group in collaboration with Zion Police Department concluded a narcotics investigation which resulted in the arrest of a Zion man and removal of over 60 grams of heroin.

The investigation, which lasted approximately one month, concluded this morning with a search warrant at

a residence in the 2800 block of Galilee Avenue, Zion.

Detectives recovered over 60 grams of heroin from the residence and subsequently arrested Andrew Q. Kaywon-Thomas, 37, a documented Andrew Q. street gang Kaywonmember, of Thomas the same residence.

The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the charges of unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver (class X felony) and unlawful possession of a controlled substance (class 1 felony).

Kaywon-Thomas remains held in the Lake County Jail pending an initial court hearing.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

The mission of the Demen-

tia Friendly Community Initiative (DFCI) is to allow those with dementia and Alzheimer’s to live as independently as possible. With this training the community now has another place that will be helping ease the fear and isolation associated with dementia and increase the resources needed to live well with the disease.

Dementia Friends is a global movement that is changing the way people think, act and talk about Alzheimer’s and dementia. Developed by the Alzheimer’s Society in the United

Kingdom it is now spreading across the U.S.A. By helping everyone in a community understand what dementia is and how it affects families, everyone can make a difference for people affected by dementia and Alzheimer’s.

The Purple Angel is an International symbol recognized around the world to identify individuals, organizations and businesses trained to know how to work with those people who have dementia and Alzheimer’s, as well as their care partners.

The DFCI – Walworth County will continue to provide free training programs to the general public at programs planned for 2020. Details can be found on their Facebook page. There will also be free 30-minute training programs on an “as requested” basis for businesses, agencies and churches.

After a three-week investigation, the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office has charged Shawn Brautigam with 3 felony counts of Aggravated DUI. The charges stem from a November 24, 2019 crash which resulted in the death of 34 year old Woodstock male and serious injury to a 44 year old Wheaton female.

On November 24, 2019

at 2:03 a.m., the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, Woodstock Police, Woodstock Fire/Rescue District, and Wonder Lake Fire/Rescue responded to a single vehicle crash involving a 2019 Toyota Camry that had overturned after crashing into a utility pole and tree on Charles Road west of Queen Anne Road.

Investigations were con-

ducted in cooperation with the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit, Winnebago County Coroner’s Office, and McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Preliminary investigation revealed Brautigam’s blood alcohol content was above the legal limit at the time of the collision and that Brautigam’s Illinois license had

been suspended for a previous DUI offense. It is also believed that speed may have been a contributing cause to the crash.

Brautigam is currently detained within the DuPage County Jail (IL) on charges unrelated to this incident.

The investigation continues by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit.

The following arrests in McHenry County were reported by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Department. Suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Nov. 15 Eva I. Aquino-Martinez, 28, Crystal Lake, was cited for driving with no driver’s license, never issued license,

and speeding 15-20 mph above the limit; Gregorio Guzman, 32, Woodstock, was cited for contempt of court; Rebecca R. Kunz, 22, Waukegan, was cited for mfg/ del heroin near school/pub hs/ park, man/del controlled substances, possession of a controlled substance, retail theft/ disp merch <$300;

Gustavo Rodriguez, 42, Carpentersville, was cited for violation of bail bond/family member; Harold L. Bruessard, 48, Fox River Grove, was cited for del 15<100 gr cocaine, possess 15<100 grams cocaine, del 1-15 gr cocaine, possession of a controlled substance; Nov. 16 Wesley D. McReynolds,

43, Wonder Lake, was cited for domestic battery/physical contact, domestic battery/ bodily harm; Amparo J. Chavez, 34, Woodstock, was cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle, and driving on a suspended driver’s license; Oscar Mercado-Recillas, 34, Harvard, was cited for domestic battery/bodily harm;

All aboard the North Pole Express

In 2012 Antioch Park and Recreation staff members Toni Galster and Libby Baker created a train trip for Camp Crayon Pre-school as a field trip.

Word got out about this fun event and the public wanted to be able to experience the same trip so the North Pole Express was started. Every year it has grown and at one time they were offering trips on 16 days.

The North Pole Express is now offered for the 12 Days of Christmas with the trains running Dec. 2-17 this year.

Guests get on the train in Antioch at 11:00 a.m. and make their way to Buffalo Grove where Galster, current Special Events Coordinator for the Antioch Parks & Recreation, and Anna Strobel, have transformed the station into the North Pole. Guests are greeted when they arrive, have hot dog and chips lunch, and Santa arrives at noon to greet the guests at their tables.

Each table then takes their turn visiting Santa to tell him of their Christmas wishes and each child receives a bell. While the other guests are waiting their turn coloring books are given to each child along with a letter for them to write to Santa.

Children also receive a bag with a craft project to work on while they wait.

Hot chocolate and cookies arrive at each table and once every child has visited Santa he reads “The Polar Express” to the group. Santa encourages the children to sing and practice their Ho, Ho, Ho’s with him. At 1:51 p.m. the train arrives to take everyone back to Antioch and this is when Santa announces he is riding back with them. Children get to spend time talking and taking photos with Santa as they make the trip back.

This years conductor is Sandra Simon, train station helper is Anna Strobel, and volunteers for the train and train station are Sheryl Pierce, Sheryl Stier, Aleksandra Schultz. Antioch Queens Lyric Stay, Madison Dempsey and Cayleigh Thompson also help out and assistants Alexis Strobel and Abby Strobel.

And then of course there is Santa Claus!

Tickets for this year’s train sold out, but mark your calendar for next year’s train. Tickets go on sale in mid-October and sell out quickly.

Boudreau participates in Augustana College athletic leadership program Each year, Augustana College athletes are selected by their head coaches to attend an athletic leadership program during the fall semester. Kyle Boudreau, Antioch, has demonstrated leadership qualities already in his respective sport, and had the ability to learn and refine his skills through the program. With a guest speaker each night of the program and different themed sessions, athletes learn more about their unique and different personalities, effective ways of communication, as well as

different leadership styles and approaches, while connecting with athletes in different sports than their own.

One of the many goals of the program is to better position student athletes that are leaders within their teams, within the Augustana College campus community, as well as with post-graduation endeavors.

Founded in 1860, Augustana College is a selective fouryear residential college of the liberal arts and sciences. The college is recognized for the innovative program Augie

Choice, which provides each student up to $2,000 to pursue a high-impact learning experience such as study abroad, an internship or research with a professor. Current students and alumni include 170 Academic All-Americans, two Nobel laureates, 13 college presidents and other distinguished leaders.

The college enrolls 2,500 students and is located along one of the world’s most important waterways, the Mississippi River, in a community that reflects the diversity of the United States.

S h e r i ff ’s Detectives arrested a Grayslake man after they found he burglarized his n e i g h b o r ’s home. The Carlos Zelaya burglary was captured on an indoor security camera which was previously installed by the homeowner.

On December 10, 2019, sheriff’s deputies responded to a residence in the 18100 block of West Lindenwood Drive, Grayslake, for a report of a residential burglary. The burglar stole cash from the residence, along with an interior security camera. Even though the burglar stole the security camera, video of him committing the burglary had already been saved in the ‘cloud.’

Further investigation revealed the burglar, Carlos H. Zelaya, 32, also of the 18100 block of West Lindenwood Drive, was a neighbor of the victim.

On December 11, 2019, sheriff’s detectives arrested Zelaya at his residence. The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved a residential burglary (class 1 felony) charge.

Zelaya remains held in the Lake County Jail pending an initial court hearing.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Special Investigations Group in collaboration with Zion Police Department concluded a narcotics investigation which resulted in the arrest of a Zion man and removal of over 60 grams of heroin.

The investigation, which lasted approximately one month, concluded this morning with a search warrant at

a residence in the 2800 block of Galilee Avenue, Zion.

Detectives recovered over 60 grams of heroin from the residence and subsequently arrested Andrew Q. Kaywon-Thomas, 37, a documented Andrew Q. street gang Kaywonmember, of Thomas the same residence.

The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the charges of unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver (class X felony) and unlawful possession of a controlled substance (class 1 felony).

Kaywon-Thomas remains held in the Lake County Jail pending an initial court hearing.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

Grief is many things, but mostly it’s personal Grief is not a law-abiding citizen. It is a renegade, an ever-changing beast. Grief is a labyrinth. Expecting it to follow a straightforward path is like expecting water to run uphill. It just isn’t going to happen.

You experience it once, twice, even four or five times, and you are no more prepared to experience it again than you were when you were a grief virgin.

It’s always new. That’s the awful magic of grief – all magic aside, of course.

This is because no grief is the same. Not ever. Each time we grieve it is different and unique because our losses are different and unique. And the person we are when this loss

experience our unique and personal grief. They are more common than you’d expect; By I can’t believe they still exist.

I’ve been blessed to escape most grief (so far), but the stuff I’ve experienced has thrown me for a loop. I’m no good at grief. I’m sure most people think this same thought, but compared to other people I’m pretty sure I stink at grief.

I lost my mom nine years ago. I still have difficulty remembering the fun times with her. The laughter. The love. Her smile. Instead I remember the Alzheimer’s and her asking, “Who are you?” when I entered her kitchen.

I don’t speak about this publicly. It isn’t something people want to hear. It’s been nine years, after all. Why can’t I get over it?

Grief takes courage to forge through on your own terms.

Grief takes courage period, while making you feel just about anything but courageous.

Grief sucks.

But grief means we have loved and been loved. Grief means we have participated in life. Grief means the life we lived contained something substantial and something worth losing. Without loss and the grief it brings, life would lack meaning and value.

Nothing worth anything is gained without a considerable amount of energy and love.

Grief comes from both.

Just about all of us will grieve at some point. And this grief does have one universal

truth: It means we have loved someone or something outside ourselves. It means we have let someone inside our inner circle to be a part of our lives and when they no longer occupy that space, when they are no longer on this earth, we are sad because at the moment they left this earth a piece of us left with them.

This is the emptiness called grief. But at the same time, it is the fullness called love.

Husband’s dementia puts elderly couple in danger of downward spiral Dear W.C., I am writing about a man and woman that live in my apartment building. They are senior citizens, and the husband was diagnosed with dementia about a year ago. He was working part time until about six months ago when his dementia became worse.

I decided to stop by yesterday to drop off some cookies because I felt they might need to be checked on. My instincts were correct as I was shocked by how much they had declined. The husband no longer remembered me. He was so hungry he ate almost the whole plate of cookies before his wife could stop him. I have no experience in social work and do not have any funds to help them, but I did run to a fast food restaurant and got them burgers and shakes. They ate them so fast I promised I would come back today with more food.

“That is not necessary,” the neighbor said. “I can get their groceries. I want to continue to help, too.”

She made a commitment to help the couple several times a week when she was off work. She also said her teenage children could help.

I also gave the neighbor a gift card for groceries to replace what she had bought for this couple so far.

I walked over to say goodbye to the husband and he again asked who I was. I told him I was there to help and for a moment I saw his eyes clear.

“Thank you.”

I knew at that moment he knew what they were going through. His wife kissed his cheek and he looked into her eyes and kissed her back.

“I am grateful for the small moments, no matter how brief, where I have my husband back.”

The next week I called the wife and she shared how much better they were sleeping on their new mattress. Even her husband’s nighttime wanderings had slowed considerably. She also shared how grateful they were for healthy food in their kitchen and for all of our assistance.

On December 14, at approximately 4:45 a.m.

Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the area of Green Bay Road and Blanchard Road, Beach Park, for a traffic crash with injuries. Sheriff’s Deputies arrived and located a 2013 Honda Civic and 2008 Nissan Altima with heavy damage.

Preliminary investigation shows the Nissan, driven by a 24-year-old male of Waukegan, was traveling northbound on Green Bay Road just south of Blanchard Road. For an unknown reason, the driver of the Nissan crossed the center line and drove into the southbound

Both drivers and a passenger in the Nissan, a 23-year-old female of Waukegan, were pronounced deceased at the scene. There were no other occupants in either vehicle.

Sheriff’s Traffic Crash Investigators and the Lake County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene.

An autopsy has been scheduled on Monday for the deceased.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
