Antioch Traveling Closet holding winter giveaway Sunday

Meet the authors along the Chain On a cold winter day there is nothing more satisfying than bundling up in front of a freshly lit fire with a good book and a cup of hot chocolate, or glass of wine, at your side.

Even more enjoyable is knowing that the author is a local writer who resides here on the Chain O’Lakes, perhaps a neighbor or friend.

It is often said that the beauty of the water has a calming effect and encourages artistic and creative expressions.

Perhaps that is why there are so many artists and writers found along the waterways.

It seems there are a number of published authors currently residing in the area or who have made this area their home at some time. These authors have embraced a variety of writing genres so there is sure to be some of their works that are appealing to each reader.

If you are looking for a historical novel, thriller, beautiful historical coffee table book, historical nonfiction work or self help book for teenagers there is at least one local author to please you.

Here are a few local authors who have written interesting works that can be enjoyed when the cold days keep us indoors.

Cheryl Honigford Cheryl Honigford began her interest in writing while still in grade school.

“My father would bring out an old Underwood typewriter and place it on the dining room table where I would pound out stories,” Honigford said.

Today she spends her days working at Abbott Labs, then returns to her home in Antioch, where she is a wife and a mother. After all her work and family activities are completed, she retreats to her world of historical fiction “I love history, mystery and old time radio,” Honigford said.

So it is not surprising that her three book series of historical fiction includes all of these elements.

Set in the 1930s in Chicago, the stories include a historically accurate look at the city of Chicago in that era, a heroine who works in radio, a love interest and, of course, a murder.

Completing these stories was a job that took a great deal of research. Her vivid description of the times, her intricate knowledge of the workings of old time radio, and her interesting characters, along with an interesting mystery will prevent the reader from putting down any of the books in this series.

The Antioch Traveling Closet will be holding their winter giveaway this Sunday, Dec. 15 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Antioch Senior Center, 817 Holbeck Drive, behind the Antioch Fire Station.

There will be clothing, shoes, cleaning supplies and toiletries available on a first-come, first-served basis for no charge to families in need.

Other services available at the event will be: six hairstylists to give free haircuts, The Period Collective to hand out feminine sanitary products, and you can also get your blood sugar, blood pressure or cholesterol checked. A representative from Antioch Area Healthcare Accessibility Alliance (AAHAA) will be at the event to help with medical insurance questions, medical transportation needs or their Network Nurse services.

The Antioch Traveling Closet is a non-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization. No strollers, car seats, wagons, or shopping carts are allowed inside for safety reasons. The Antioch Traveling Closet reserves the right to refuse to serve anyone. Bags will be provided.

Ice fishing workshop offered at Moraine Hills State Park

The Friends of Moraine Hills State Park and Volunteer Veterans Conservation Corps will be sponsoring a Ice Fishing & Tip-up Workshop on Sunday, Dec. 15 from 1:30-3:30 p.m.

Learn how to make an ice-fishing tip-up and then construct on all on your own.

Members of our Volunteer Veterans Conservation Corps will have pre-cut parts ready for you to assemble. The workshop will also discuss ice fishing techniques and safety.

Participants are also encouraged to sign up for the February Ice Fishing on Lake Defiance on February 9, pending safe ice.

The workshop is ope to adults and children ages 10 and up. The fee is $15/person or $12/FOMHSP member, payable to Friends of Moraine Hills State Park upon arrival, check or cash only.

Holy Cross Anglican offers Advent services, unveils new website

During this often-stressful holiday season, unwind with peaceful Wednesday evening Advent prayer at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 11 and 18, and seekers are welcome to celebrate Christmas Eve Tuesday, Dec. 24 with carols at 4:30 p.m. followed by a 5 p.m. service at Holy Cross Anglican Church in Lake Villa. The church is located in the one-story office park at 500 Park Ave., Suite 102 in Lake Villa.

Advent—the four weeks preceding Christmas—is not only the beginning of the Christian year, it is a time of waiting, anticipation and preparation for the coming of Jesus, noted the Rev. Ron McGowin, interim rector at Holy Cross. “The giant cultural machine of consumerism treats this same period of time not as Advent but as the Christmas season,” he said. “The shopping malls and radio stations shout ‘Buy! Buy! Buy!’ and ‘Go! Go! Go!’ and ‘Do! Do! Do!’ But the Church shouts, ‘Wait! Slow down! Listen! Remember! Prepare!

“As the pace of Going, Buying, and Doing build, our parish offers the community a place to wait, slow down, listen, and pray. This Advent season we invite you to ‘unplug’ with us each Wednesday evening as we prepare for the coming of Jesus.”

Each Wednesday evening will include a combination of readings, prayer and opportunities for individual reflection and journaling, noted Betsy Christ, senior warden of the parish. To help people relax, recorded music will include soothing, contemplative songs ranging from classic Christmas instrumentals to Gregorian chants.

“The holiday season is a time when many are seeking a worship community,” Rev. McGowin said. “While the Anglican

tradition is officially Protestant, it’s also known as the Via Media, the Middle Way, combining the best of Roman Catholicism (liturgy and tradition) and Protestantism (authority of Scripture and justification by faith). Interfaith couples will find a friendly home at Holy Cross.”

In an effort to better engage seekers in the digital age, Holy Cross Anglican Church in Lake Villa has also unveiled a redesigned, more mobile-friendly website and a new parish logo.

The new-look website is not only more compatible with smartphones and mobile devices than the old website, but it also contains more photos and has better access to social media, said the Rev. Ron McGowin, interim pastor of Holy Cross. “The website also has a prayer tab, enabling anyone in the world with an internet connection to submit a prayer request via email,” he said. “We invite any seeker to visit the site at www. holycross-anglican.org.

The parish’s new logo is a graphic depiction of the cross that hangs over the altar at the church, said Fr. McGowin.

Holy Cross Anglican Church is affiliated with the Diocese of Pittsburgh in the Anglican Church in North America.

Recycle your holiday lights program available The Village of Spring Grove is providing holiday light recycling. Keep the strings of lights out of the garbage and bring them to be recycled at the Municipal Centre, 7401 Meyer Road.

Holiday lights that will be accepted for this program are: mini-lights (or Italian lights), C7 lights, C9 lights, rope lights, LED lights and extension cords. Garlands, live greens and wreaths are not

accepted in this free program sponsored by the Village of Spring Grove.

The Municipal Centre is open Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. all year round.

Animatronic characters finding new life at Volo Auto Museum

Volo Auto Museum Director Brian Grams looks up at one of the museum’s newest, soon-to-be-restored animatronics. The museum recently bought The King and King Kat, the last of the performers added to the legendary Chuck E. Cheese animatronic bands lineup. The restaurant chain this year is completing a phase-out of the robotic bands that date back to the early 1980s.

In a back building housing excess show cars, stacks of bulging boxes and a tractor or two stand two curiously tall, sturdy tripods — hints of musical instruments, air tubes and wiring protruding from beneath their enormous, plastic-wrapped heads.

“It’s official,” said Brian Grams with no small hint of nostalgia as he pulled back the cover of a box to reveal a huge, furry paw. “All of the animatronics have been pulled from Chuck E. Cheese.”

What started in 2017 with the announcement that Chuck E. Cheeses nationwide were receiving a makeover has come to its inevitable conclusion. And Grams, at 43, is among the generations that fondly recall watching the giant, furry, robotic musicians crooning away in the family-friendly restaurants.

Now he is banking on that nostalgia to draw Gen X-ers, millennials and Boomers in for a musical encounter with an old furry friend. In recent months, the museum has spent more than $100,000 acquiring three shows — The

King, King Kat and the holy grail of them all, The Rockafire Explosion, the Aaron Fechter creation that started it all, and subject of a 2008 documentary.

That’s right, fans. Mitzi Mozzarella, Fatz Geronimo, Billy Bob Brockali, Rolfe DeWolfe, Dook LaRue, Looney Bird, Beach Bear and Moon are in the house. It may be some time yet before they are on display, but they are here.

Already delighting visitors in the Volo Auto Museum’s food court is a completely restored trio of animatronic performing pirates from Pirate’s Cove, and a set of the Beagles from Chuck E. Cheese.

The King and King Kat are two of the last characters to join the old ShowBiz Pizza Place (later rebranded as Chuck E. Cheese) entertainment lineup — and certainly the rarest. The King was a

lion that impersonated Elvis Presley, while King Kat used the same structure with a new wig and costume to update to a Michael Jackson-themed character.

Grams said The King and King Kat are being restored now and will debut this winter or early in the spring. The Rock-afire Explosion, which includes eight characters on three stages and has a 40-footby-10-foot footprint, likely will take months, and thousands more dollars, to restore.

But it will all be worth it, according to Grams.

“For a whole lot of people out there, these animatronic shows played a huge role in their childhoods,” Grams said. “It’s where they went on special occasions, where they’d beg their parents to take them. It was the special treat for earning good grades in school. It brings back some

pretty fond memories for a lot of us.

“There’s a fan community out there that has really nowhere else to go to see these old friends of theirs anymore,” he said. “We just want them to know they’re here. Some are already performing and can be enjoyed today. More are on the way. And we’re pretty excited to be the ones keeping these iconic characters alive.”

Antioch Traveling Closet holding winter giveaway Sunday

Meet the authors along the Chain On a cold winter day there is nothing more satisfying than bundling up in front of a freshly lit fire with a good book and a cup of hot chocolate, or glass of wine, at your side.

Even more enjoyable is knowing that the author is a local writer who resides here on the Chain O’Lakes, perhaps a neighbor or friend.

It is often said that the beauty of the water has a calming effect and encourages artistic and creative expressions.

Perhaps that is why there are so many artists and writers found along the waterways.

It seems there are a number of published authors currently residing in the area or who have made this area their home at some time. These authors have embraced a variety of writing genres so there is sure to be some of their works that are appealing to each reader.

If you are looking for a historical novel, thriller, beautiful historical coffee table book, historical nonfiction work or self help book for teenagers there is at least one local author to please you.

Here are a few local authors who have written interesting works that can be enjoyed when the cold days keep us indoors.

Cheryl Honigford Cheryl Honigford began her interest in writing while still in grade school.

“My father would bring out an old Underwood typewriter and place it on the dining room table where I would pound out stories,” Honigford said.

Today she spends her days working at Abbott Labs, then returns to her home in Antioch, where she is a wife and a mother. After all her work and family activities are completed, she retreats to her world of historical fiction “I love history, mystery and old time radio,” Honigford said.

So it is not surprising that her three book series of historical fiction includes all of these elements.

Set in the 1930s in Chicago, the stories include a historically accurate look at the city of Chicago in that era, a heroine who works in radio, a love interest and, of course, a murder.

Completing these stories was a job that took a great deal of research. Her vivid description of the times, her intricate knowledge of the workings of old time radio, and her interesting characters, along with an interesting mystery will prevent the reader from putting down any of the books in this series.

The Antioch Traveling Closet will be holding their winter giveaway this Sunday, Dec. 15 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Antioch Senior Center, 817 Holbeck Drive, behind the Antioch Fire Station.

There will be clothing, shoes, cleaning supplies and toiletries available on a first-come, first-served basis for no charge to families in need.

Other services available at the event will be: six hairstylists to give free haircuts, The Period Collective to hand out feminine sanitary products, and you can also get your blood sugar, blood pressure or cholesterol checked. A representative from Antioch Area Healthcare Accessibility Alliance (AAHAA) will be at the event to help with medical insurance questions, medical transportation needs or their Network Nurse services.

The Antioch Traveling Closet is a nonprofit 501(c) (3) organization. No strollers, car seats, wagons, or shopping carts are allowed inside for safety reasons.

M.P. McDonald Mary McDonald did not begin writing books until the 1990s when the family purchased their first computer.

“Although I didn’t start writing until then I began making up stories as a child but never wrote them. It was the computer that made me decide to write a book,” McDonald said.

Her first attempt was a romance novel that like many first attempts at novel writing, was never completed or published.

As a reader she loved thrillers, especially Tom Clancy, so it is not surprising that it was to that genre that she was eventually drawn.

She self published her first book in 2010.

The story started as a short story for a contest and eventually turned into a 90,000 word novel. That novel “No Good Deed” can be downloaded free on Kindle.

McDonald has 11 books in print with number 12 coming out in 2020. Her thriller series, known as the Mark Taylor series includes five books in the original series and a three-book spin off series.

McDonald is known for her post apocalypse survival works known as the Sympatico Syndrome Series. The first of the series is called “Infection,” which follows a group of people from both Chicago and Wisconsin as they work their way to an island near Green Bay and attempt to survive the deadly virus which has quickly infected 98 percent of the population. Infection is followed by “Isolation” and “Invasion.”

McDonald, unlike many writers does not squeeze her writing in at night. She is a day writer who spends her time writing when her schedule permits. When not writing she is a part-time respiratory therapist at Aurora Hospital in Kenosha. She is married and the mother of two sons and a daughter,

Dennis Downes Dennis Downes is an Antioch resident who is well known for his art work, particularly sculptures and his historical research of native American culture.

It was his love of native American history that lead to his studies of the Trail Marker trees that were used by the Indians who lived in the Chain of Lakes area and later settlers to find their way when traveling. The trees were

trained by the Indians to lead them on their journeys.

“The Indians would bend the trees and tie them in place so that they would grow in that direction and be used by travelers to guide them on their way,” Downes said.

One of Downes sculptures of the trail marker tree is fittingly found along Main Street in downtown Antioch. Fittingly, because Main Street, or Highway 83, was one of the Indian trails that had Trail Marker trees.

Downes’ book, “The Trail Marker Trees,” is a beautiful work that will grace your coffee table. It contains the history of the Native Americans of the area and their work with creating the Trail Marker Trees. The photography is well done and a mixture of old photos of the trees and early Native Americans in the area along with newer photos of trees that still exist and were located by Downes.

In addition to printed copies of the book, the updated version of the book is available for electronic readers. The updated version of the book is not available in hard copy at this time.

Lisa M. Schab Lisa Schab is a Lake County author who has now published 18 books, began to write when she was in third grade but it would be many years before she became a published author.

Her first published book was “My Dad is Getting Married Again.”

“This book was inspired by my upcoming marriage to a man with children from a prior marriage,” Schab said. “It was a way to help make the transition for all of us, to deal with the changes that would be occurring in our lives.”

As a licensed social worker with a practice in Libertyville, Schab has continued to write books that will help children and teens deal with their tumultuous emotions in today’s world. Her books are workbook/journal style.

“These books help teenagers focus on their emotions. They teach coping skills to them,” Schab said. “They are also purchased by adults, especially by those working with children and teens. Journaling is a great tool to help with emotions and allows the teen to put his or her emotions into words.”

January. Titled “Put Your Feelings Here,” it is a creative journal for teens dealing with anxiety. She will also be giving a workshop for parents at the Antioch Library on Jan. 23.

David Lester David Lester has spent a good part of his life living near the water or boating on the water. While he grew up in Crystal Lake, he has also lived in Antioch, on the shore of Lake Marie and in Lake Villa along Petite Lake.

He always enjoyed boating spending time on Thursday evenings first observing the boat races held off Blarney Island , then as a competitor in those races. As he became more involved he began to look for the records of the early racers and found out that many had been destroyed.

Wanting to preserve the history of boating on the Chain O’Lakes, he began the momentous job of compiling that history.

“I read every book I could find, spent hours at the historical societies of the area and interviewed private collectors,” said Lester as he presented his book at the McHenry Area Historical Society.

His work of more than three years produced “The History of Boating on the Fox Chain O Lakes.” The more than 570 page book depicts the history of boating on the Chain from the 1800s until today. The book contains photos from the steam paddle boats that provided transportation from McHenry and Fox Lake to the resorts along the chain in the days before everyone had an automobile and before there were roads in the area around the lakes.

First annual Lake County Treasurer’s Toy Drive ends Dec. 15 Lake County Treasurer Holly Kim has launched the first annual Treasurer’s Toy Drive. Toys are being collected in convenient locations all over Lake County through partnerships with State representative offices. All toys will be donated to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office for distribution to agencies across the County.

“It’s the season of gathering with family, dusting off old traditions, cooking with

Ice fishing workshop offered at Moraine Hills State Park

The Friends of Moraine Hills State Park and Volunteer Veterans Conservation Corps will be sponsoring a Ice Fishing & Tip-up Workshop on Sunday, Dec. 15 from 1:30-3:30 p.m.

Learn how to make an ice-fishing tip-up and then construct one all on your own.

Members of our Volunteer Veterans Conservation Corps will have pre-cut parts ready for you to assemble. The workshop will also discuss ice fishing techniques and safety.

Participants are also encouraged to sign up for the February Ice Fishing on Lake Defiance on February 9, pending safe ice.

The workshop is open to adults and children ages 10 and up. The fee is $15/person or $12/FOMHSP member, payable to Friends of Moraine Hills State Park upon arrival, check or cash only.

Holy Cross Anglican offers Advent services, unveils new website

During this often-stressful holiday season, unwind with peaceful Wednesday evening Advent prayer at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 11 and 18, and seekers are welcome to celebrate Christmas Eve Tuesday, Dec. 24 with carols at 4:30 p.m. followed by a 5 p.m. service at Holy Cross Anglican Church in Lake Villa. The church is located in the onestory office park at 500 Park Ave., Suite 102 in Lake Villa.

Advent—the four weeks preceding Christmas—is not only the beginning of the Christian year, it is a time of waiting, anticipation and preparation for the coming of Jesus, noted the Rev. Ron McGowin, interim rector at Holy Cross. “The giant cultural machine of consumerism treats this same period of time not as Advent but as the Christmas season,” he said. “The shopping malls and radio stations shout ‘Buy! Buy! Buy!’ and ‘Go! Go! Go!’ and ‘Do! Do! Do!’ But the Church shouts, ‘Wait! Slow down! Listen! Remember!

“As the pace of Going, Buying, and Doing build, our parish offers the community a place to wait, slow down, listen, and pray. This Advent season we invite you to ‘unplug’ with us each Wednesday evening as we prepare for the coming of Jesus.”

Each Wednesday evening will include a combination of readings, prayer and opportunities for individual reflection and journaling, noted Betsy Christ, senior warden of the parish.

To help people relax, recorded music will include soothing, contemplative songs ranging from classic Christmas instrumentals to Gregorian chants.

“The holiday season is a time when many are seeking a worship community,” Rev. McGowin said.

“While the Anglican tradition is

officially Protestant, it’s also known as the Via Media, the Middle Way, combining the best of Roman Catholicism (liturgy and tradition) and Protestantism (authority of Scripture and justification by faith). Interfaith couples will find a friendly home at Holy Cross.”

In an effort to better engage seekers in the digital age, Holy Cross Anglican Church in Lake Villa has also unveiled a redesigned, more mobile-friendly website and a new parish logo.

The new-look website is not only more compatible with smartphones and mobile devices than the old website, but it also contains more photos and has better access to social media, said the Rev. Ron McGowin, interim pastor of Holy Cross. “The website also has a prayer tab, enabling anyone in the world with an internet connection to submit a prayer request via email,” he said. “We invite any seeker to visit the site at www.holycross-anglican.org.

The parish’s new logo is a graphic depiction of the cross that hangs over the altar at the church, said Fr. McGowin.

Holy Cross Anglican Church is affiliated with the Diocese of Pittsburgh in the Anglican Church in North America. The parish church and offices are located in the brown, one-story brick office park in Lake Villa, on the west side of Illinois Rt. 83 and about two blocks south of Illinois Rt. 132 (Grand Ave.). Everyone falls off the gratitude train occasionally I have much to be thankful for. I am a strong advocate and overall supporter of thankfulness.

When the kids were younger we even had a gratitude wall in our kitchen where we listed the many things we had to be grateful for – things we call blessings. I believe thankfulness should be a part of each day. This is the season of giving thanks.

Gratitude is a choice.

Sometimes – most times – it comes easily for me. Like breathing. I am thankful for that. I see gratitude in the everyday and the mundane.

But I also believe it is my choice. To see beauty – or not. To choose gratitude – or not.

Some days it’s easier than others: to see the mostly clean carpet and ignore the stains. Other days, the stains seem glaring and it’s hard to be grateful for stains. I suppose it’s difficult to be grateful 100 percent of the time. We’re only human, me included.

So when the glass seems half-empty maybe we simply have to practice redefining it and call it half-full. Habits build with time gradually, and if we practice positivity over and over and over it

The Lake County Sheriff’s Technical Crash Investigations Unit continues to investigate an ATV crash which occurred Sunday, Dec. 8th, at approximately 3:00 p.m.

Preliminary investigation shows a 56-year-old man of unincorporated Zion was traveling on an ATV westbound on 17th Street, east of Sheridan Road, Zion.

Many of us spend a significant amount of time practicing various life interests – sports, hobbies, and education. Maybe we should see gratitude in the same light. Maybe we need to practice that, too.

New Year’s Day snowfall could mean free admission Visit the Volo Auto Museum now through Christmas Eve and your admission could be on the house.

“If it snows 3 inches or more on New Year’s Day, we’ll refund the full admission price paid,” said Brian Grams, director of the museum at 27582 Volo Village Road. “Just hang on to your tickets.”

The snowfall measurement used will be that recorded between midnight and 11:59 p.m. Jan. 1, 2020, by the National Weather Service at O’Hare Airport in Chicago, Grams

noted. Tickets purchased Dec. 1-24 will be eligible.

“There are dozens of great reasons to visit our museum, whether or not the snow flies on New Year’s Day,” Grams said. “There’s so much to see, including a vintage collection of snowmobiles dating back to 1923, mechanical orchestras, everything from Batman to Mickey and, of course, our always amazing collection of muscle and star cars.”

The Volo Auto Museum features roughly 400 classic, muscle and filmfamous cars as well as numerous other rarities. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Regular admission is $15.95 for adults, $8.95 for children ages 5 to 12 and free for children 4 and younger.

Lake County holiday traffic safety campaign results announced The Lake County Sheriff’s Office arrested five people for impaired driving and issued 46 seatbelt/child safety seat citations during the recent Thanksgiving Traffic Safety Campaign. A total of 135 citations were issued.

Law enforcement agencies throughout Illinois participated in this effort to save lives by getting impaired drivers off the roads and more people buckled up. The enforcement campaign took place from November 22 through De-

cember 2.

During the mobilization, extra emphasis was placed on enforcement during late-night hours, when statistics show the most unbuckled and impaired driving fatalities occur.

This law enforcement ef-

fort was made possible by federal highway safety funds administered through the Illinois Department of Transportation and is part of the nationwide “Click It or Ticket” and “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaigns.
